Single #2

Hey all,

Recently I asked folks what should be the singles off of IYD. This is a twist on this. Vote for your choice for single #2! I could only offer a poll with 10 options, so I removed "Cheaper Than Free" and "Soldier's Angel" as options (apologies to fans of those songs....I just don't believe they'll be considered for singles).

Nightbird17 05-17-2011 11:19 PM

In Your Dreams should be next....upbeat good radio tune

Then WB should tie in Moonlight with the Breaking Dawn release.

tabruns 05-17-2011 11:33 PM

Nightbird17: That's my thinking as well. "In Your Dreams" for single #2 followed up by "Moonlight" for single #3. If possible I would also go for "Italian Summer" as single #4 and "Everybody Loves You" for single #5.

I'm feeling more and more like "For What It's Worth" deserves a single release too.

Macfanforever 05-17-2011 11:38 PM

write in .Cheaper them Free.If theis tune get coutry airplay It will blow off Taylor and her friends off the country charts.

StevieNicksfann 05-18-2011 01:32 AM

Ghosts Are Gone

cristochango 05-18-2011 05:22 AM

I really think Italian Summer is gonna be the next one.

xxxmx 05-18-2011 05:35 AM

I can hear Italian Summer on AC radio. IYD, too. Though I like several other songs, I just can't imagine them getting much airplay.

OooMissionary 05-18-2011 06:30 AM

....

...Moonlight...

If WB would promote Stevie to the country market then there are several possible singles:

1-In Your Dreams
2-For What Its Worth
3-Cheaper Than Free

Lee 05-18-2011 07:49 AM

I voted for In Your Dreams. I think this song should have been the opening song on the CD. I don't know how Secret Love is doing as a single, but I probably would have went with In Your Dreams first.

Lee :)

Travis 05-18-2011 07:58 AM

I don’t think any of the songs are “single” material to be honest but I voted for “For What It’s Worth” mainly because I feel that Stevie’s truly best songs are never released. Also, I think a lot of people can identify with FWIW, much like “Landslide” or “Leather and Lace.” IYD probably is the most radio friendly of the bunch. Secret Love was actually a great choice for a single but unless Glee covers it, she isn’t going to have a hit single.

kak125 05-18-2011 09:25 AM

you know after listening to the radio the other day i think any of stevie's songs could be a single. i heard some stupid song called Barbara Streisand on sirius hits 1 that only had those words in it. really is this even called music?!!!

Music is not just about songs with words. There is great music out there in all genres. The Barbara Streisand song is not meant to be that serious obviously. Music doesn’t always have to be that deep, if it were it would be rather depressing. It’s ok to have fun once in a while. Let the music take you there.

Barbra Streisand by Duck Sauce

Duck Sauce is an American-Canadian DJ duo consisting of Armand Van Helden and A-Trak. The duo are signed to Fool's Gold Records.[1]

In the summer of 2010, Duck Sauce released a track called "Barbra Streisand", named after the singer of the same name. The track heavily samples the 1979 song "Gotta Go Home" by Boney M, which itself is based upon the original tune "Hallo Bimmelbahn" by the German band Nighttrain. "Barbra Streisand" was first played at Miami Winter Music Conference 2010, and gained heavy DJ and radio support in the UK and Ireland, Germany, Norway, Austria, Poland (Polskie Radio 4), France, Finland, Romania, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. In Australia, "Barbra Streisand" was first heard on the radio station Triple J while in New Zealand it made its debut on Auckland student radio station 95bFM. The song has since also moved to various commercial radio stations and has increased in popularity. In the UK it peaked at number 3. and it reached Number 1 on the Australian ARIA Club Chart as of 12 September 2010. For Billboard magazine week ending December 18, 2010, the song reached the #1 position on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart. [2] [3] On April 26, 2011, the song was featured in Glee's 18th episode in their second season entitled "Born This Way". The song is also featured in the Vitamin Water Revive commercial.[4] The Duck Sauce music video for Barbra Streisand currently has over 50,000,000 views on YouTube as of Thursday, May 5, 2011. [5]

I think a heavily remixed and edited "Moonlight" has potential. Not only does it need to be shortened, it needs more guitar. Heavy guitar, like, death metal heavy. The chorus, as fabulous as it is now, could really kick some a$$. The verses could also use some guitar riff punctuations as well. It's not that I don't like it the way it is; it's just not particularly radio-friendly.

I love that song!

They missed the boat on releasing a second single. It should have been released in April. I don't see the point in releasing one now. She's doing Secret Love on the promos now. Where will she perform single #2?

I say....no more singles.

My Heart

I think My Heart would be a great single...it's catchy and people can relate to it. :-)

Singles promoted to AC radio take a LONG time to climb the AC charts. Example is Bruno Mars, who has the current #1 AC single with "Just The Way You Are", a song released almost 9 months ago and peaked on the Hot 100 Chart way back in OCTOBER!

I would imagine Secret Love will do the same, probably reaching top 10 by early summer.

Luckily, it's not your choice. Another single or two would help raise awareness of the album much like "Planets of the Universe" and "Sorcerer" did for Trouble In Shangri-La. In the case of that album, it would have been a mistake to stop with "Every Day", just like now it will be a mistake to only release "Secret Love".

You make the incorrect assumption that an album has a couple weeks shelf life and that's it. Adele's album is an example that albums can and do build momentum weeks (and sometimes months) after release.

Well, this wouldn't be a good idea.

I'm not criticizing your (possible) love of "My Heart". But you do realize that "My Heart" is a bonus track, so it's not on most of the copies of In Your Dreams that people have, so ergo, not a good choice for single.

On the contrary several songs are very radio-friendly: "For What It's Worth", "New Orleans", "Everybody Loves You" and "Italian Summer" all have hooks, structures and song lengths conducive to radio play. This doesn't mean that they WILL be played, due to length of career/age/the market, but in and of themselves any of those songs could be on the radio.

I would say "Moonlight" does as well, on the sheer quality of the song.

tabruns 05-18-2011 10:07 PM

Looks like it may be time for single #2. "Secret Love" drops from 20 to 23 on the AC chart this week.

Considering that it debuted at #1 with 350,000 sold and has stayed in the top 3 since it's debut, Adele's album is not the best example, but the single "Rolling in the Deep" was released last year and it finally hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last week.

Even if radio programmers are resistant to "In Your Dreams" or "Moonlight" (which follow "Secret Love" in iTunes sales), Dave Stewart and his production company could deliver videos for those songs to youtube, Vevo, etc. The trailer for Twilight: Breaking Dawn should debut this summer and if "Moonlight" is used for that, it would help.

True. Interesting that both songs are higher on iTunes sales than other tracks on the album....and they're consistently selected on here too. Looks more and more like those are obvious single choices.

the sad thing about Secret Love is that she actually promoted the song and couldn't help it.

I'm guessing she'll hit the late-night shows in the next round, but who knows.

I voted for "Moonlight". Stevie needs to be weird/witchy woman - she can't bring the voice acrobatics (or the blandness) that we hear in today's popular ballads, & she doesn't have the energy onstage to sell a straight-up rock song (or the public would have eaten up her FFG performances). Nobody wants to hear a craggy-voiced woman sing boring adult contemporary stuff that anybody else can do anyway. Stevie needs to bring the Stevie-ness - the stuff that makes her distinct. And that's "Moonlight", IMO. That's one song that nobody else can do. Something like "Italian Summer" - much as I like it - could be done by others.

GoldDustOrphan 05-19-2011 02:05 AM

Even the AC chart is now dominated by Katy Perry, Gaga, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Pink, Kesha, etc. and with a few exceptions, it's virtually identical to Top 40. Most of the artists featured are 30 and under. All of Stevie's peer-group have met with similar resistance in regard to Top 40 radio play. It's been a long, long time since Elton John, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Pat Benatar, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Deborah Harry, Heart, etc. have seen a top 40 hit.

tabruns 05-19-2011 01:19 PM

I think it shows the quality of this album that nearly every track got some votes for being the 2nd single (plus the write-in or two that "Cheaper Than Free" got, and the 1 write-in for "My Heart").

"In Your Dreams" and "Moonlight" are the obvious choices to most of us, with "For What It's Worth" being a strong contender.

Someone write Stevie and WB and suggest "In Your Dreams" for single #2, "Moonlight" for single #3, and "For What It's Worth" for single #4/or single to country radio. :)

True, but can Stevie SING Moonlight live? Can she pull off the first 2 minutes? I have faith she can, but does she?

Surely she can. Take for instance that interview clip from a couple weeks back where she sings the chorus of For What It's Worth - I wonder why she doesnt sing live in that voice. She's performing Secret Love, and sounds like she's trying to force the words out instead of letting them flow out of her the way she seems to do so natuarlly when she sings off the cuff.

I would think she can do Moonlight, but only if she lets that natural vocal take over instead of the forced vocal she uses for live performances these days.

I voted for In Your Dreams as 2nd single, but upon more reflection I agree with your assessment about Moonlight. Stevie went over the top & in your face with the album cover, it's the image she is best known for and I think she needs to stay in that lane with the next single. Moonlight while esoteric, is also relatable with the whole beauty loving the beast narrative - the forbidden love that can never be. And her breathy vocals on this song are not straining, and sung very delicately which I think would work well for TV performances and on stage. She's not "craggy-voiced" on this song at all.

I also think FWIW has some potential as a single (though it'll never happen), esp. on Triple A radio, it's old-fashioned yet hip sounding, with yet another good delicate vocal delivery and a simple hummable melody and poignant story. But other than these 2 or 3 songs I would pull strongly for You May Be The One, which is just classic, and has the potential to reach new listeners. And we know that they shot a video for it on the crew sheets that were leaked 2 months ago. So who knows. I do not think they should release Annabel Lee that song is too esoteric and eccentric for casual listeners imo.

I think about this everytime I hear the song...the ending for SL is just totally odd and I really don't think that helped to encourage radio airplay. One thing you can say for Dave, he did something you never hear on the radio..that weird ending. Too bad SL didn't do better.

In Your Dreams should have been the first single definetly should be the next single. It can go on pop/rock stations and country stations too. so start calling up the stations to play it.

As time goes by, I am more inclined to believe In Your Dreams should be the next single for the reasons you stated. Her audience is AC, AAA and even country...the way it is these days. And country opens up a huge, huge audience.

Annabel Lee is great, but I think she needs an uptempo tune after Secret Love. Save that for the next single.

The whole Moonlight thing with the younger audience is too big of a risk.

tabruns 05-20-2011 07:46 PM

Has anyone heard about a 2nd single for IYD yet?

TerraRhiannon 05-20-2011 07:48 PM

Moonlight should be.

My Mom, who doesn't care for modern Stevie, actually likes Moonlight. Being the only one she does. So if it impresses her, I think it would get a good response as the second single.:p

tabruns 05-20-2011 07:54 PM

I've given the CD to 9 people who are Nicks fans but haven't bought her albums in years. I haven't heard back from all of them, but here are some reactions so far:

2 people both picked "Secret Love" and "Moonlight" as the best songs.
1 person picked "For What It's Worth" and "Cheaper Than Free" as the best songs.
1 person picked "Soldier's Angel" as the best song.

YoungAmericans 05-21-2011 04:51 AM

I think In Your Dreams or Moonlight would be nice.
Maybe WSS...
but I really really think Ghosts are Gone would make a terrible single.

I don't think that bodes well for the album. If a group of people can't choose a song that they absolutely love, that's not good to me.

I really like this album ALOT, but what if each song is just a small step down from a hit. Who knows.

Steven Tyler has a video out for his song. I wonder where it is going to get played.
