Stevie's sense of humor

Stevie has said a few times that she would like to attend Night of 1000 Stevies. I've never been but I know (and love) the bawdy sense of humor a lot of drag queens have. Do you think Stevie has a good sense of humor about her past? Do you think she can laugh at herself? Or do you think if a drag Stevie took the stage with white powder caked around her nose or dropping bottles of Klonopin all over the place the real Stevie would be upset. For having such a wild heart and all the sex, drugs and rock & roll in her life I wonder if deep down Stevie is really sensitive.

Of course I can't help getting a little chuckle out of the idea of some drag Stevie pretending to do lines off of a Belladonna album and Stevie marching up on stage, snatching it out of her hands and going, "no no no, you're doing it wrong. THIS is how you do blow off a record!"

I think she' s both. Sensitive about certain times of her past (drugs) I don't think sh'ed joke about it. I also think she's has a great sense of humor in general about things. I wouldn't wanna cross her though.

While I think that Stevie has a good sense of humor, I also think that she tends to take herself waaaaaay too seriously.

How many times has she said that whole "if I doctor tries to prescribe you Klonopin, you should run out of that office screaming?" I don't think she's at the point where she's ready to joke about that.

I think Stevie definitely has a sense of humour about herself but at the same time does take herself seriously in some regards. She'll make fun of stuff like her outfits and hair... but anything really personal I don't think she would find the humor in really. The coke, perhaps, but definitely not the klonopin.

I don't know if Stevie would find that funny. Personally, if she did show up to NOTS and someone did that? I wouldn't find that a really good way to thank her for making an appearance. She might get her feelings hurt and not show up again.

This.
I actually don't think Stevie could handle many jokes about herself, but a very firm "NO" to Klonopin. Whether you blame her or her doctor, it's pretty clear that she, at least, feels very strongly that she was robbed of 8 years of her life. I don't think she'll ever be ready to hear people joke about it.

And really, the hardest I've ever seen Stevie laugh was at a singing fish. Love her, but sometimes I question the woman's humor...

Thanks for your input. It wasn't a loaded question, really. It just sort of popped into my head. I wouldn't guess a true Stevie fan would even want to do something like that, but someone who's a casual fan who's just trying to make a joke might. My thoughts were that if she would get upset by stuff like that maybe the person who goes with her should be on the lookout for some off-color humor and try to shield her from it. I remember hearing an interview from the OSOTM days where a reporter asked her about a certain sensitive subject regarding her cocaine days and even though it was an mp3 you could hear the ice cold darts come out of her eyes in the deadly silence that followed. It's good to be able to laugh at yourself and her video to the latest Night of 1000 Stevies proved that she can enjoy something like this. But you're right, people should be respectful and not go too far.

Klonny-Pin Era

She can be super touchy.

Example: I went to her Halloween party a few years back and, for a laff, I went as HER circa 1993/94. I wore all the right clothes and had the hair and makeup from that era AND, for the cherry on top, I had a Hollywood make-up artist friend of mine hook me up with a huge lifelike gash on my forehead with a a stream of fake blood running down my face. I walked around the party carrying a half-full bottle of 1924 Lafite Rothschild Cabernet Franc, all the while saying "Hey, what happened?".

She didn't kick me out, but she ignored me the whole time and we haven't talked since.

Day-am. Bold.

Anything 1987-1995 is a definite no-no. But really, she can be touchy about even the lightest teasing. There was one interview in the last decade where she was asked what it was like to look back at her old clothes and hair. The interviewer didn't even say anything negative, but clearly expected Stevie to giggle at 80's fashions. Stevie immediately got that prickly sound in her voice and reminded the reporter that those were all couture pieces by the brilliant Margi Kent. Sounded mad pissed.

This is almost as bad as showing up to a British Royal Halloween party hosted by William and Harry, dressed as Zombie Princess Diana complete with blood and broken bones sticking out of your body while being followed by a posse of friends taking pictures. Klassy.

I think Stevie is more the type of gal where... she could take the humour if it was praising her, like "Oh my god, these hairstyles were sooo lame, but they looked gorgeous on you Stevie!" but not if it ended with "what were you thinking?" If that makes sense.

She can be super-classy, yes.

She's very funny at times like the singing fish video.also at the concerts making jokes about the past.I would not poke fun of her.especially when she was under the meds.
She could dress up looking like Lindsey Buckingham in order to pay a visit to the NOTS.LOL .That would be awesome.

Seriously? I'd never heard about that. Jesus, if I ever saw ANYONE dressed like that I'd scream my head off at them. I have a great sense of humor (I think...) but that's just not funny, especially around William and Harry. I'm extremely sensitive about the subject of Princess Diana though.

Anyhow, back to Stevie - I do think she has a great sense of humor regarding most things and I suppose she doesn't find humor in a lot of others, but in my opinion it's perfectly natural to be sensitive about things that were very hard for you. The cocaine and the Klonopin addictions were a couple of the worst things in her life. I don't blame her for not wanting to joke about them. To her, that's serious business.
I myself am on Klonopin right now (I had no choice in the matter, otherwise I definitely would have "run out of that office screaming") and I've had more than once person jokingly say to me "Ooooh, trying to emulate your precious Stevie Nicks with that?" They thought it was hilarious, I was not amused. When it's something you have to deal with yourself, it's definitely not as funny as it may be to the outside observer.
Everyone has things that are hard for them - deaths, family problems, addictions, whatever. Would you like people to joke about those things around you? Probably not. I think her reactions to those jokes are totally normal.

Other than the things she's sensitive about, I think her sense of humor seems pretty good. She seems very laid back and fun.

I find Stevie to be the most humorous when she's not trying to be funny. Does that make sense? Just the sh*t that comes out of her mouth sometimes is like WTF? What planet are you from woman?

Oh no, I know exactly what you mean. Often, Stevie is her funniest when she herself is being absolutely dead serious.

kick.inside 05-18-2011 06:56 PM

^ Yes. Just her random weird goofiness is funnier than any intentional humor she's ever attempted.
