My Heart: the new version

I just heard this new version today and I really like it. The way they redid it by downplaying the versus and letting Stevie sing low suits her voice and the song. The middle part with all the oohhh yeeeahs is really creative. I find I love the new instrumentation to this song.

I have two problems with this song though. I don't think it flows that well after any song and should be an opener because of the way it is done. I also wish there was more verses and less chorus. I think her singing the versus is the best part of the song. This song belongs on TISL and would of given it a boost and I wish TISL was produced like this.

I actually liked the demo but could not listen to it because of her voice. This is soo much better to me.

What do you think about the new version?

louielouie2000 05-04-2011 08:57 PM

I was considering starting a thread on the song today myself! :) I had an initial knee jerk reaction against the song the first few times I listened to it. I've enjoyed the TISL outtake for nearly a decade now, and have personal meaning attached to it. Now that I've listened to it several times, I'm starting to really dig the new version, though. They removed the overly sappy/cheesy aspects of the original, updated the production to make it sound more current, and made the song a cheery celebration of love vs love lost. I like it... the new version really makes me smile vs the original which made me mourn someone from my past :).

^Exactly my feelings. :)

Tango 05-04-2011 08:59 PM

I liked the new one on the Barnes and Noble better, actually. Sounds great!

Jondalar 05-04-2011 11:24 PM

I have been listening to this song over and over on repeat. I love this thing. I just think it belongs on TISL. The versus are great.

Josh2003 05-04-2011 11:52 PM

I feel like this one is missing all of the passion and feeling of the TISL version (I almost said "the original"). The verses have been watered down, melodically...and while I love the guitars, and the fact that they kept much of the music the same, the fact that the verses have been changed rather disappoints me :-(

This part of your post hit it home for me, Louie. I think that's what made Dave's work on this album so great -- he took an average cheese sandwich of an outtake and turned it into a tasty grilled cheese, complete with a delicious tomato soup mandolin part on the side.

wildheart048 05-05-2011 05:01 AM

I really LIKE this version (on IYD) alot, but I LOVE the outtake version. I don't find it cheesy at all...I do think it (even for, and at, the time) sounds older ... almost like a Rock A Little outtake, more than a TISL one...but never the less I love it. I feel that there is more passion in Stevie's vocal delivery on the early version ... and I miss the words that are left out in the new one...
When I added the IYD album to my iPod, I did delete the original Annabel Lee, but I kept my heart figuring I'd wait and see...I think I'm going to end up keeping both...at least for awhile...

mylittledemon 05-05-2011 05:11 AM

Gee, I'd love to hear it too but B&N won't get off their lazy rumps and SEND MY FRICKIN CD!!!

;)

wildheart048 05-05-2011 05:19 AM

That sucks! I ordered from WB, and I'm still waiting for the litho, but at least my cd came on the third so I can't complain...much  I hope you get it today!!

I haven't gotten any of my WB cds but I got the litho.

wildheart048 05-05-2011 05:29 AM

Now that is just weird! And it would annoy me NO END! ARGH! I hope you get yours today, and I get mine and everybody gets theirs! There's no excuse at all! Funny enough, I put my netflix vids in the mailbox on the 1st and they sent me an email on the 2nd saying they received them and I was like "and WB couldn't get the cd to me today? I mean it's the same postal service? but then I got it on the third so I was happy...:]

darklinensuit 05-05-2011 06:44 AM

I really can't stand it. I wanted to like it, really I did. It seems looser than the original (just like Stevie's "Free Fallin'" sounds looser than Tom's), maybe even with less of a hook.
For me the worst part is the vocal, which is often (at least by the middle of the song) every bit as rough and nasal as in the TISL version.
The one thing I don't mind is the lyrics. At least on paper, they look like they could have amounted to a decent song.

so the only way to get this song is to buy the whole cd from barnes and noble? I already bought my cd at target on tuesday...will itunes post the song for us to buy on their site or any other site I can buy "my heart?"

markolas 05-05-2011 07:28 AM

Well, I finally heard the damn thing.

I'm not sure that it fits on the album, but putting that aside...it's an okay song. They removed the strings-laden verses, which makes it punchier, but I dunno...it kinda seems like it loses something. The TISL version reminds me of someone from my past as well, and this one doesn't. But for me, that's not a good thing. Taking it on its own merits, tho, I'd say that the IYD version is on par with the TISL one. They're different, but not radically so. And I always liked her vocals on My Heart. :)

Honestly, I don't see a big difference between her voice on IYD and her voice on TISL.

SmthngOfADreamr 05-05-2011 09:35 AM

Let me start by saying that I am in love with the entire IYD album... That is --- EXCEPT for the addition of My Heart.

I was very excited to go to Barnes & Noble and purchase the album with the extra track, but upon listening to it at home, I feel as if My Heart ruins the flow. I also was a fan of the original version from the TISL era that we all knew, but I am not a huge fan at all of this newer version.

It's difficult to explain why, but this is the best I can do: It's like when I'm inside a Chick Fil-a, and I'm struggling to hear a song being played over the loudspeakers above general the din of the restaurant, and it's a song I think I might like. Then all of the sudden I hear words like "salvation" and "praise" pop out of the song, and I realize that what I'm listening to is christian rock. That's what my heart sounds like to me (the music, obviously, not necessarily the lyrics, although they could easily work also for a retreat at a mid-western mega-church...)

It's nothing I have against Christianity or any religion, it's only that was just my initial feeling about the song, which kind of ruined it for me on IYD. Both the sound of it as well as the themes are off from the rest of the album IMO. So I don't mean to offend anyone who is religious or who may have a predilection for christian rock.

BTW, for those who may not know Chick Fil-a: delicious chicken sandwiches and waffle fries served at a privately owned fast food chain. They are a Christian company and aren't afraid to let you know it, thus the christian rock played constantly inside their restaurants with which I am associating My Heart.

What Josh said, 100%.

Jondalar 05-05-2011 09:57 AM

I actually just think this song needs more versus, maybe twice in a row, it goes right into chorus

used karma 05-05-2011 01:16 PM

I still haven't heard it.

Well, first off, the entire sound... but then that line, "My heart still stops when I stand before you.." idk I always hear the 'stand before you' line in Christian songs. That's what I've thought since I got the B&N CD!

I don't really know what Christian rock sounds like, so My Heart can't very well remind me of it. :)

Just got home and listened to it to give it another shot and have to say it really really does. Even the lyrics now sound like it to me. Sorry if I ruined a favorite song for you- wasn't my intention at all. But at least we have the other version which is more epic sounding with a different arrangement of lyrics as well, and I don't think it sounds christian rocky at all.

I was listening to My Heart in the car with the windows down just a few minutes ago, and I have to say, I think it'd actually make an excellent single. It's got excellent pacing, it's upbeat, and it's catchy :).

I like the upgrade, too. However, I feel like there are lyrics missing. The verses seem choppy and I wish she sang "you're not to blame" with more umph!

I want to hear it to, we only get the regular version of iyd here without bonus track.
Hoping for itunes thou...
I want to hear !

I just got an email message from Barnes & Noble that my order has been delayed. At least I have the standard version to placate me. Sorry to hear you are still waiting.

mylittledemon 05-05-2011 05:00 PM

B&N sent me an email this morning saying it was shipping today. I'm surprised as I figured international orders might go out a bit quicker so as to arrive on the street date. :distress: I should have it in another 5-6 days.

fleetwoodtrick 05-06-2011 06:49 PM

I would love to hear this-- I just have the regular CD. I can't find it on YouTube or anything, does anyone have any suggestions?

Edit: Got it! (:

BombaySapphire3 05-06-2011 07:43 PM

It still doesn't really sound like a complete song to me just a bit folkier whereas the TISL version was pure AC and actually a better vocal IMO..It was the right decision to cut it

ahafan02 05-06-2011 07:48 PM

I like the song a lot...much better than Soldier's Angel, Cheaper Than Free and Everybody Loves You

Agree Agree Agree...I feel Dave's strength is he gave shape and form to stevie's music without all the sentimental sap....I love Stevies stories of ghosts and angels and gypsies are beautiful but Dave brought a masculine energy that gave the music balance....I would have loved to see what Dave could have done with quirky, overly personal songs like Welcome to the room, Sara...he may have tossed them out from the start!

I'm inclined to agree about Cheaper Than Free but there is no way in hell .heaven or purgatory that Stevie Nicks would ever have allowed even the thought of Soldier's Angel being cut from IYD.

mylittledemon 05-06-2011 08:03 PM

After now having heard the NEW version of My Heart I think I prefer it... although I like the slow verse on the "old" TISL version at the beginning of the song better.

jkmaletic 05-06-2011 08:48 PM

I finally got my barnes and noble version today. I don't have a habit of listening to a lot of demos, so I really had nothing to compare it to. I kinda gave up on demos after Lindsey slaughtered " Not Make Believe " on SYW. :sorry:

After one listen i think its ok. Maybe I need a few more to really evaluate it. BUT- I love the extra pics they added to the booklet. :)

Jamie

wildheart048 05-07-2011 04:33 AM

the new version is growing on me...I still think I like the first version better, but yesterday I found myself singing along to the new one like it WAS the old one....I wish they were even more different so I could just act like they were two different songs

PenguinHead 05-07-2011 11:54 AM

I haven't heard the new My Heart yet. Hopefully it will arrive in the mail soon. Now that I've listened to the album a dozen times, at least I have something else to look forward to! After that, I hope we get another new b-side. Speaking of that, has there been any CD singles released?

fumidesigns 05-07-2011 05:13 PM

yeah............

ok i just went got the cd and poster from warner bros. first thing, open the poster! too cute! second.........listen to "my heart"! yup i love it!

HighPassion 05-07-2011 07:21 PM

I ordered the WB version just BECAUSE this song was included on it. I loved the outtake, the TISL version is just perfect.
I have a knot in my stomach if this isn't as good as that one though, because I've held off buying it so far.... And still waiting for my copy to come in:confused:

michelej1 05-08-2011 04:09 AM

Those "oooh yeahs" taking turns wafting in from alternate speakers are such a delicious part of the song.

This should not have been just a bonus track.

Michele
