Which LB album should I buy?
So I just listened to "Soldier's Angel" off of IYD and after hearing LB's voice I realize that I need to buy one of his albums...now!
But I'm not really sure which to get. I have no interest in purchasing Law and Order right now and I've heard at least half the songs of Go Insane already. So I guess it's between Out of the Cradle, Under the Skin and Gift of Screws. I have hardly heard any songs from these. A lot of people seem to really love Out of the Cradle. I'm kind of leaning towards Gift of Screws though because I love love love "Bel Air Rain." I really can't afford this right now after the amount of shopping I've been doing recently...but oh well! Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
All 3 of those are great. Out of the Cradle and Under the Skin remain my favourites. Gift of Screws is a close 3rd for me.

and then of course there is september - and seeds we sow promises great things with 7 songs we have heard so far - so guess need to save for CD and DVD (and fall tour)! |
Out Of The Cradle is a masterpiece, but I would say go for Gift Of Screws because it is an amazing piece of work and there is so much flawless stuff on that album- The Right Place To Fade (aka Twist Of Fate), Wait For You, Great Day, Gift Of Screws, Underground...man, I'm going to go listen to that album now.
And I love Under The Skin. I think there's mixed feelings about that album amongst the fans on here, but to me it's beautiful. It's a grower, but my gosh there's beautiful stuff on it. I actually recommend all his albums because they are all so different from each other, but they're still so Lindsey. But take your time. I'm curious to know what you think of the album you select once you've listened- so post back! |

Ok, I digress. Back on-topic: Gift Of Screws. |

I feel like it takes me a while to warm up to some of Lindsey's music but when I do I fall in love with his songs. When I first heard SYW I thought "Come" and "Murrow..." were the weirdest songs and I did not like them at all! But now after listening to them more and learning the stories behind them I love them, esp "Murrow..." |

Now I love them all passionately (except for That's All For Everyone, which I love with a little less fervor). LB can be polarizing. I mean, not to the extent of an avant garde artist, but he certainly has his quirky thing down. Still, I find that after you listen you hear all those hidden nuances and the subtle beauty blares and then I can't get enough of it. |

I like Out of the Cradle best out of the 3 you mentioned. Under the Skin would be next. UTS is a mostly acoustic album. I really enjoy it, but some others haven't cared as much for it. Gift Of Screws is a fine album, but not as good (IMO) as OOTC and UTS.
|
I've always found Lindsey's solo work to be a little inaccessible at times, although certainly his first three solo albums have their moments of brilliance. I haven't liked the last two at all and find them totally unlistenable.
Out of the Cradle is really his best solo album in my opinion, so I'd be buying that one. However if you want to listen to listen to modern Lindsey and not a Lindsey of times past, then you really should buy either Under the Skin or Gift of Screws because OOTC sounds nothing like his music now. |

Personally, I would treat myself to all three albums. Because they all have their virtues and moods. But out of the choices given, I would choose Out of The Cradle to give a general flavour of his work. Once you explore the surface of his work, hardcore fans can appreciate Go Insane and Law And Order for being completely off the wall but endearingly so. Bwana and Johnny Stew are the most off the wall from the Law And Order album, and some would consider them an acquired taste. But I adore them.

Don't buy UTS. I love it, but if I had to buy only one album out of 3, that wouldn't be it.

I always say: go in order.
|
I tried to go in order with the FM albums. I got the white album and realized I had already heard all the songs before but was still happy to have it. Then when I went to go buy Rumours I was like, I have heard all these songs before I wanna hear something new! So I went with Tusk.
For LB, most of his solo works I have heard have came from Law and Order and Go Insane and I'm looking for something new. I'm also just really into more recent Lindsey stuff. But who knows what I'll end up with I can't decide. |
Well, if you've heard most of L&O and GI, then I'd go with OOTC, UTS, or GOS. Flip a coin. They're all great.

First you will purchase Out of the Cradle... you will unwrap it first among the CDs and thumb through the booklet as you listen to it's shimmering genius. Next you will open Under the Skin and listen intently as you look longingly upon old photo albums that belong to you... Lastly, open and listen to Gift of Screws, and rock around the room like nobody is watching. *Annnnnd you're back in the room!* |

Oh, my eyes feel so tired..... |
I just ordered Law & Order
I listened on amazon to the short little preview of the songs. I've heard Bwana, It Was I and Trouble all before. I wasn't crazy about any of them but I mentioned before that Lindsey's songs usually take me a few (hundred) listens before I love them  The idea of going "in order" is what got me. I know I contradict myself a lot. So we'll see what happens. |

I'll be here all week, folks! |
My favorite LB album has always been Out Of The Cradle, but recently, I listened to Gift Of Screws again and it might be my new favorite LB album. I would say to get them all, but try to listen to samples on Amazon or iTunes and see which songs sound good to you. I think Lindsey's songwriting has matured since Law And Order. In the first couple of albums and even Tusk, he tends to sing whiny on some songs (the end of I'll Tell You Now, for example, but it's a beautiful enough song for me to love). Since Under The Skin, although he still writes about being "mistaken for a whore" and "They heard fifteen seconds and that was enough, the idea was new but the business was tough", it at least isn't whiny sounding, but I wish he'd get past that and sort of move on from that subject. Don't get me wrong, I still love Bel Air Rain and Underground, but lyrically, you will hear a thread like that running through a song or two on each album. That being said, can't wait for Seeds We Sow.
