Oprah Comment (Two Years Later . . .)

Hey Dee,

Did you notice that when Oprah was doing the introductory voiceover for Stevie she said of Lindsey that the two "fell in love" two years after they met, when Stevie was 17?

Did Oprah's staff get their facts wrong?;)

Stevie herself said in an interview not too long ago, "This is the man that I met and fell in love with when I was 17."

However, to me it sounded like Oprah was saying that Stevie met Lindsey when she was 17, and two years later they fell in love. Which actually still contradicts a few of the things they've said in the past about them not getting together until they left Fritz to go on their own... which tbh I've never really believed completely.

Well, there's no way that's true if she's living with him a la "Gypsy" (yes, I'm bringing that up again!) in a house in Los Gatos in 1969...

But, it does seem they've backed up the time frame a little more in recent years. I think Javier even said he didn't know why they kept saying they weren't together until Fritz broke up.

michelej1 04-14-2011 08:49 PM

Javier said they used to share a room during Fritz and were always backing each other up in band discussions (which is something they never did again ever).

But Stevie said that it was because they had to tell the Fritz guys that they were ditching them that they suddenly became romantic with each other -- for comfort:cool:.

It was always funny to me, because Stevie said Lindsey was offered a recording contract and the record company knew he wouldn't take it without her, so the record company only wanted the 2 of them and not the other guys and they had to break up with Fritz and I was thinking, "well, if she was only a friend, why wouldn't he accept a recording contract without her? Why didn't he say, 'I refuse to do it, without Javier!'"

Yes, she may have recently changed the time line, but I don't know if that's the truth finally coming out, or if it's just senility.

I also recall Stevie saying that the reason they got romantic was because "It was just so cool" that they had gotten singled out and broken up the band....

And yeah, the comment about Lindsey not leaving Fritz without her totally doesn't make sense either. I thought the same thing.

 Yeah, I hear ya...but why were they a-hem "shacking up"? I don't think she's lying about that because she was specific enough to say for that entire tour where their house was... unless it was just her house and he happened to be over there just hanging out, working on music with her, plotting ways they could undermine Javier's destiny and take over the music world as Buckingham Nicks...;)

Idk, it just makes more sense to me that they had a relationship or were in a relationship during the Fritz years at least. But, hell they can't even get the break up year right either! So...

I'll say this about the Oprah thing-- I personally thought it was a pretty lousy thing to say anything about "the boys of the band" and "hookers" on national TV on a show like Oprah's while the 2 women of the band were living the lives of sequestered nuns.

Oh, she's insane, but on the other hand, the men might have been more embarassed if Stevie had said that THEY were cloistered, kept under heavy guard and never slept with a hooker or groupie. How are you going to look Mick Jagger in the eye, if you don't have that street cred?

Sorry for the double standard.

The funny thing is Stevie implied that she and Christine were together in a guarded room -- reading Louisa May Alcott, I imagine.

Other than Sausalito, I highly doubt that Stevie and Christine were keeping each other company in the evenings.

I guess time makes you bolder. Maybe that's how things started with the Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" generation. Later, at least one of the sisters was involved with Dennis Wilson (who had picked up a venereal disease from one of the Manson sisters); when you sleep with someone, you sleep with their history. I'm sure they all used protection. Even the hookers. ALL of them. Rock & Roll, baby. Kind of creepy: all of them.

Kena 04-15-2011 10:46 AM

I should probably double check the timeline of things before I post this ...but where Stevie and Linds "technically" single during the Fritz days? When did they break up with their others? Stevie said she went out with David Young for 5 years starting when? I remember reading somewhere that Lindsey was dating some girl that he was very serious about and that everyone assumed he would marry...then Stevie came along. I think Stevies timeline is off a bit because they were cheaterheads.

That makes sense, but by the time Stevie told the story, it was over 5 years later when they started becoming famous. She and Lindsey were both with other people, but they were never married to those people and I don't think they ever even got to the point of living with the other people (at least Stevie says Lindsey never lived with anyone but his parents).

Are you still worried about protecting someone's feelings all that time later, especially when you were never even married to them and you were in your late teens and very early twenties, a time when monogamy isn't prized. I can see not wanting to hurt your old boyfriend or girlfriend right after you break up, but not 5 years later.

I don't think they've told the exact truth, but I really can't figure out what they're lying about. Unless they murdered someone back then and are covering their tracks!

Me and my friend have always joked over the past few years how Stevie's stories seem to change or get altered everytime she tells them! I wonder if it's a memory thing or a selective memory thing? :)

I've always had a hunch that Stevie deceived her parents about what (who) she was doing and that she and LB agreed to shuffle dates around to match whatever she told them. And then, as time has gone on, her dad passed on, she gets older and the fibs get more tedious to keep up. So the truth starts to leak out but, as the saying goes, a really good liar needs a really good memory. So now, it's all a huge muddle, and even she can't remember what really happened when any more?

Yeah, that's logical. There are some things my dad still didn't know decades after the fact. I took them to his grave!

Wouldn't have had any student debt at all, if I'd used the money he'd given me on TUITION instead of travel.

“I never in a million years expected it [stardom] to happen to me. I took typing and shorthand. I went to five years of college and I quit and also got into humoungous trouble from my parents for that. I moved to Los Angeles with Lindsey Buckingham, which was totally unacceptable to my entire family. Not only was I living with somebody, but I quit school. ‘What are you gonna do? Be in the circus for the rest of your life?’" - Stevie, 1997

you may be onto something my friend.

I can see the part about her lying to her parents (especially her Dad) about Lindsey. Barb had already turned her nose up at him and Javier for not joining the military and going to 'Nam. I could see where the Nickses would be more than a little concerned about Stevie following a pipe dream with Lindsey and her need to keep them in the dark. But, didn't she move to Chicago with them for a brief period? I'm betting she was already in love with Lindsey and high tailed it back to SF as soon as she could convince her Dad she was going to stay in school.

I think she's forgotten a lot and muddled a lot but not much before LA. I am thinking it was some kind of secret they kept from her Dad. But, then again - he lied too. He was quoted in an interview as saying Lindsey hung around their house a lot after his Dad died and they sort of took him in as a son. He made it sound like that was how Lindsey's relationship with Stevie developed. But, that doesn't make sense - Morris Buckingham died in Feb. 1974 and Stevie and Lindsey were already a couple and living in LA, Jess & Barb were living in Phoenix. It just doesn't add up.

WildHearted 04-24-2011 09:54 PM

Oh, the possibilities. I wonder if THEY even remember. I think Lindsey probably does for the most part but just keeps his mouth shut... Stevie's either really forgetful (delusional?), or she's lied so much that she can't keep it straight and the truth slips in sometimes.

Well regardless, I think it's safe to assume that they were definitely together during the Fritz days, at least at some point. It's never made sense to me personally that they just got up and moved to LA together, started living together, and THEN began dating.. Plus, didn't Lindsey at one point say something about calling asking her to join Fritz and kissing her?

Yeah, Hejira told us Lindsey told her he called her and "I even kissed you" at the last Unleashed show, although he was just being funny about the kiss, because it gave him an excuse to kiss her then, in the present.

I do notice that Stevie has gone back to saying he called her and doesn't say that the drummer called her. So, his correction must have stuck with her over the last 2 years.

So, after Soldier's Angel, Lindsey felt closer to Stevie than he had in 30 years?

Was he feeling especially close to her in 1981? Of course, he probably meant to say forty, not thirty. Yet, based on some interviews that Stevie gave around 1981 and 1982, I think she and Lindsey actually were getting along better around that time than they had before and after.

I can't keep up with all the ups and downs of these two's relationship. It's a most fascinating thing, and could make quite an epic novel/miniseries. My goodness.

That's what I think, too. And I don't think that makes me a shipper, not if shipping entails wanting them to get back together, like, officially? I just think they're interesting for the whole idea of who the important people in your life are, and the way they move in and out of influence. The only problem with making it a novel is that it would get rejected as being too far-fetched.:p

Who in their right mind would want to be poor Kristen?

She may be married to him, she may have his kids, but "Lindsey and Stevie" isn't ever going to go away.

Can you imagine being married to someone whose old flame is constantly in the picture:distress:

It's a testament to their relationship if they lasted this long, actually. She must be made to feel very secure and not threatened by Stevie's presence. After all, Kristen had a lot of repair work to perform when she met Lindsey. She helped him feel comfortable in a relationship and valued and, more to the point, she doesn't fight for creative control :p

I don't really want to have to think about what he wanted to do with the Pears, lol. I know how his mind works after many years of fandom. :o Kristen can retain her obsession with her beloved Pears.

I wonder what does Lindsey say to Kristen about the songs he writes that are supposedly about Stevie does she ask what they mean or does she ignore them or does she just understand that he still has to write about her? I don't know no matter how much I care or love someone I would never get involved with someone who has that kind of history with an ex. I would always feel like he married me yeah but she was his first choice and I would always feel that a part of his heart will always belong to her. No matter how secure I would come off there would be a little part of me that would think that he will always be in love with her and if I were Kristen I just wouldn't be able to deal with that.

I'm fascinated by relationships. And when people bicker often, what I love to see is the things that they don't argue about and the things that they tolerate without objection. The things that seem strange and annoying to others, but are so much a part of the other person, that they don't even notice or question it anymore. I'm drawn to this in romantic couples, but also in working couples too, like Siskel and Ebert, Larry David and Seinfeld; Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

I loved how Siskel and Ebert might compete, but when they went on Howard Stern and Howard was making insulting comments about Ebert's new family, how Siskel stepped in and defended them.

I hate reading about the arrogance Jerry Lewis developed thinking he contributed more to his pairing with Dean Martin than Dean did, but I love the fact that over time Jerry regretted this profoundly. He tells the story of showing up at Dean Paul Jr.'s funeral and how his estranged partner, Dean, called him up to thank him afterwards and I cry and I also remember crying when I saw Dean and Jerry reunite on the Jerry Lewis Telethon and at a "Rat Pack" show in Vegas (a reunion orchestrated by Frank Sinatra).

Of course, romantic couples, or formerly romantic couples are more intriguing still. So, there's no end to my interest in pairings like Lucy and Desi, Sonny and Cher and, yes Stevie and Lindsey.

But I'm enthralled by different combinations of Macsters. Christine and Lindsey; Lindsey, Christine and Stevie; and all 5 of them together. I think I could watch them non-stop for hours. Certainly, I have watched them whenever I could, for many years.

I'm very much a shipper, but not in the "They got married and lived happily ever after," sense. Right now, one of the "ships" I enjoy the most is Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington. It's not their jokes and punch lines I gravitate towards, its the foundation of the personal relationships I can hear peeking up through the comedy bits.

Chemistry between lovers, partners, frenemies: whether it's working or failing or hurting and disappointing, I just can't get enough of it and Stevie and Lindsey bring that home in spades.

Michele

This is weird but I sometimes think of Lindsey and Stevie as the musical version of Richard Burton and Liz Taylor. They had an epic love and they were full of passion, passion, passion- apparently the fought like mad. Even though it didn't work out twice, she still called him the love of her life until her dying days and I'm positive he probably felt the same.

And then I think about how his wife felt.

I guess there are women out there that can withstand the reality of their spouse having been in a Great Romance and be content with the way things are. The men, for their part, could shower them with love, affection, devotion and make them feel completely secure. And sometimes that security is all they need.

Kristen seems quite secure and confident and they appear to have a very stable life and a beautiful family. Lindsey seems content, really, in that aspect. Though I am not a shipper, I do sense a yearning in his eye when he looks at Stevie. Am I seeing things?

It's funny you brought up Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton because I just finished reading Furious Love (which I highly recommend) anyways I agree 100% with your analysis their still seems to be something restless in Lindsey's eyes. I remember Ken Caillat saying that they were like George and Martha from Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf which were pretty much was Taylor and Burton in real life so I see it to.

I don't think you're seeing things. After all, he's admitted he struggled getting over her. Stevie claims he still thinks about what could have been between them if things had been different. Isn't that what the lyrics to Stars suggest, even? I don't think it means he's not happy in his home life - it's a different thing altogether. Maybe there are times when he thinks it would be easier to be with someone of his own generation or the strain of having a young family later in life gets to him or maybe he and Stevie just "get" each other in a way others don't...

Good comparison!

Content - this seems inadequate for such an intense and passionate man.

Well, now apparently it was Stevie who wanted them to be a duo.. at least according to Lindsey.

So, did Stevie refuse to LET LB go be solo without her?
