'98 Stand Back Performance on Leno

I came across this performance from back in '98...haven't seen it since then...and was surprised at how much Stevie's voice has changed since then! Doesn't seem like the Enchanted tour was that long ago...but, wow...time flies!

Oh the Enchanted era and tour were awesome!

Josh2003 04-03-2011 06:49 PM

Man...I remember when this aired, and you're right, it does not at all seem like thirteen years ago. And not only does she sound different, look at how young she looks. I mean, she was a ripe 50!

Josh2003 04-03-2011 06:50 PM

Also, can we start a petition to bring back Don Boyette?

APerfectLie 04-03-2011 06:50 PM

Oh how I wish I would have gone to a show during Enchanted.

jcfree 04-03-2011 07:01 PM

Thanks for posting this clip, I had never seen this before. Wow, what energy she had here, and she looks fabulous! Yes, her voice does sound better here, she has more range than she does now. Still love her!

...and MINDY!!!!! LOVE HER!

She wore that floor length cape on the SYW tour....beautiful

fringed n fab 04-03-2011 07:30 PM

One thing I remember when I saw her on the Enchanted tour in Cincinnati at Riverbend was she was in top form and looked and acted like the Stevie I knew and she changed clothes so many times but wore the garnet red boots the entire show and walked and danced around just fine in them back then. I remember at one point towards the end of Edge of Seventeen she walked over towards the left of her stage set by the speakers and started going into some kind of convulsion and off came her cream colored shawl and she kept on kicking her heels and shaking and just let the cape drop to the floor and left it there. Yeah, that's the Stevie I know and wish she'd be at every show.

The Enchanted Tour was the first time I saw Stevie live and (so far) the dates I saw her on that tour have been my favorite. :) The presence she radiated was electric and moved me to tears as well. I'll never forget seeing her at A Day In The Garden (Woodstock) that year...rocking out in the pouring rain...it didn't phase her at all! She was amazing and was cracking some awesome jokes that day.. :)

And of course, I'll never forget her performance of HAEWAFY that day. She told us, through tears, "I want you to know that when it is all said & done...that I tried to spend sometime with you & tried to make you better & I tried to make you happy. So can we do this again soon? It would be so good for me." Love her!!! :)

Thanks.I have this on VHS somewhere .I happen to missed this show because I was not paying attention of the listings as my buddy at work mentioned it the next day Ooh I wanted to kick my a$$.,A couple of years later .I met a buddy down in New Orleans LA through a P to P site and shared Stevie/FM videos with him ,He was nice enough to transfer a VHS that I send down to him.So he send the Jay Leno clip here.Plus the David Letterman clip and other clips like ET and Extra at the time.

I still remember watching this performance live... I was visiting my biological Grandparents in Kansas. It's pretty shocking how badly her voice has deteriorated since then :(.

She parts her hair on the opposite side now I see.

Well, at least on the last Ellen episode.

The Enchanted Tour was nothing short of amazing. I saw it in Indianapolis - a brilliant first Saturday of June ... it wasn't too hot, it wasn't too cold, it was kind of an overcast day ... cool breeze in the air - perfect Stevie Nicks weather.

Boz Scaggs came out at 8:05, he was done at 8:57, Stevie Nicks came out at 9:23 and rocked right until 11:05 or so. it was nothing short of amazing. the set, the lighting, the mystique, the aura. ahhh.

I'm kind of surprised more Enchanted Tour performances haven't made it up on YouTube.

johnnystorms 04-04-2011 01:38 AM

don't see it

the terrible "deterioration" of her voice of which you all speak. slightly different phrasing, but seems to hit the same sweet spots shed needs to. i mean it is 12 years. no one sings the same over that course of time. although those "ah ah"s sort of annoy me at the end.

To me her voice just seems shaky at some points, and like she has trouble keeping up with the pace. Her voice itself isn't awful, but she doesn't use it like she used to.

Her voice was rich, full, and buttery in the '98 performance... it's thin and shrieky in the '11 one. Her upper range has deteriorated further. She's very pitchy and off key so much these days. Overall, her instrument just sounds degraded and broken down after decades of abuse. I think it's the relentless touring that has taken it's toll.

somewhat... the pacing could just be nerves. listening to the sizzle reel, she seems to have re-captured that wistful vulnerability, especially in Moonlight and Wide Sargasso Sea. withholding judgement on Italian Summer because it sounds very "produced". but i do love the end of it. we'll see soon enough.
she's not going to do a 2hr. concert and nail every performance. but i've seen her on every tour since '87 and she consistently entertains and pleases her audience.

AnthonyMI 04-04-2011 06:45 AM

I was at the first show of the the tour. Front Row. Sigh. That was the best. And Yes, she was the OLD stevie on that tour. Stevie is getting older too!

AnthonyMI 04-04-2011 06:59 AM

p.s. She was actually 49 in this video. She turned 50 like the night before The opening show. The audience sang Happy BIrthday to her that night!

Hawkeye 04-04-2011 08:46 AM

you picked the worst Stand Back ever to compare the Leno performance to. Post Leno and the recent MSG performance, and I think the ":deteriation" is much less noticable. Still there but much lesss and really 49 VS. 62

Spoinny 04-04-2011 10:42 AM

I don't think the difference in her voice is all that much different. Get a video from 1977 and compare with a video from 1986, now THEN you'll see the difference!

AnthonyMI 04-04-2011 11:50 AM

something I did notice is her make up was MUCH better in 1998. Her eyes are the most notable. Gravity and botox also has had its effect. BUT I mean, really people... my Grandma LOOKED like a grandma at 63. Stevie looked 38 when she was 49 and looks (botoxed) 49 when she is 63. In another 13 years when she is 76 and hopefully retired we will be WISHING she looked and sounded as good as she did when we was 63. Who knows, she might even be dead in 13 years! Look what happened to Mary Travers! She died at 73!

"Nothing Ever Changes" - It goes without saying, but still worth mentioning - people/fans have been saying this same exact thing - record/tour after subsequent record/tour - since 75' all the way up until today, and most likely till Stevie stops recording and touring:cool:. The only consistent thing on which one can count on is Stevie's instrument will always change and evolve. It keeps things interesting and controversial that for sure.

Well I didn't go find the worst one on purpose, I picked the most recent televised performance shes done. It isn't my fault she decided to pull her worst performance out that day. But I agree, Stand Back seems to spund better at these recent shows.

lvhlive! 04-04-2011 02:46 PM

I think it's hard to pinpoint exactly what goes on with Stevie's voice with each tour.. if you listen to The Dance, it's perfect - sultry, but not strained, then The Dance tour something happened and she became EXTREMELY raspy and sheep-like.. some of her Stand Backs I have of that tour are really poor quality vocals. Then comes the Enchanted tour and she was really back on form, even late in the tour. THEN came TISL and on that tour I have some really weak vocal mp3s both pre and post 9/11, so I don't think 9/11 can be blamed. She said at that time she was working with a vocal coach just like during the Enchanted era, so why so weak? Then comes SYW and since then her voice has been stronger than TISL but less nuanced.

Enigma! Though I think it's safe to say her voice will never get MORE nuanced from now on - a good reason to try out some other songs that suit that - Gold and Braid & Whole Lotta Trouble come to mind! I've never understood the "I'll never get to do these songs again" bull**** from the 1998 shows. WHY NOT!

listen..i love stevie to death...unconditionally...but lets face it..if she went on american idol to audition...as an unknown...she wouldnt make it beyond the first round...i would still listen to her sing if she had a tracheotomy...she has beem there for me for 36+ yrs and has never truely let me down...just saw her the other night in boston...she can barely sing anymore...she doesnt move from the mike at all..and sometimes she even sings a line or 2 likeshes bored...but i didnt blimk my eyes and during her high moments..she was having a blast

Well lets face it.....how many 62 year olds audition for American Idol. Now if the show was on in say 1974 she would most def be up there. I would like to hear Pia or any of them for that matter in 37 years.

Sahara 04-23-2011 08:07 PM

That Leno performance rocks my socks. Isn't it a cracking tempo? The Dance / Enchanted is always the era that rekindles my love for this woman and her music when I've been away for a bit :)

MacwoodFleet 04-23-2011 08:39 PM

That's the best live version I've heard or seen. Her voice might have changed, or Stevie's afraid to have a wild heart anymore?

I'm uploading Stevie's great soundboard set from SYW tour in Buffalo, nearly 8 years ago. You can check the new demo song request thread in a few minutes. I can note the changes since then, but Stevie's still a phenom in my opinion.

ShangriLaTroubl 04-24-2011 10:15 AM

Not the same voice as 1998, but this 2005 Today Show performance is one of my favorite Stand Backs.

The best part of this video starts at 2:00. I love seeing the band all rocking out together at 2:05 with Stevie doing an old school dance..LOVE it (if you pay attention Carlos and Stevie are kind of doing similar feet movements during this part as well! lol)

StevieRox81 04-27-2012 10:08 PM

I'm trying to watch some of my favorite Stevie performances on YouTube and am noticing sooooo many have been blocked! Does anyone have this 98 Leno appearance as a file they could please share?!

egg cream 04-27-2012 11:46 PM

I just went looking for it and found this:

[Uh, okay, I have no idea how to embed YT videos here, so here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozMeofmd5cs ]

I was at that show, and I remember thinking "Stand Back" was the low point. And now I can't imagine babygirl pulling off a performance anywhere near as good as that. I remember when the older folks on RMASN would talk about how they missed the Stevie of the '70s or '80s that they fell in love with, and I would sit there smugly thinking, "Get with the program, old-timers! You're so stuck in the past!" But God, I miss the Stevie of the '90s.
