florence and the machine

Are there fans here on The Ledge? I really dig her album Lungs. I'm super exicted for her next one.

My best friend, Xiren, did a cover of Cosmic Love I thought I would share. Though I'm probably terribly biased as a lover of his music, I'm really LOVING his interpretation of her song. If you're a fan of the song and/or FATM, or even if you're not, I'm super curious what you think of Xiren's video. Like or not, tell it like it is. I know the majority of you are into music other than FM related, right or wrong? haha I know dammwell there is a post of WRONG! destined for this thread.

If you're not familiar with FATM, I offer you her website as well here is a link to her Cosmic Love video.

I really dig this video of FATM Kiss with a Fist. The song so reminds me of Lucille Ball and Ricky Ricardo!

Interesting... It was certainly produced and mixed well. It's not something I would normally listen to, though. I like the simple guitar lines. The guys voice reminds me of... a little bit of the lead singer from Keane and something else I can't place.

I've loved Florence + The Machine ever since I heard "Dog Days Are Over". I can't wait for the new album!

Sue me, but I also love their cover of The Chain.

skcin 03-30-2011 08:42 AM

^ Me too - I first hear Dog Days on the TV show Mercy & was like "omg, who the hell is THAT?!" A friend turned me onto them even more.

I didn't know they covered The Chain *runs to youtube*

I loved Florence this time, last year....I'm ready for some new material. Lungs has been overplayed in my apartment.

LittleCharmer 03-30-2011 12:22 PM

I think I said this the last time there was a Florence thread on here.. but oh well.
I was there when they covered The Chain at Glastonbury, and I bawled like a baby :D

She's brilliant.

I saw her in a ballroom this time last year. It was the most beautiful concert I'v ever been to.

daniellaaarisen 03-30-2011 01:52 PM

I absolutely adore her. I've been patiently waiting for her to play somewhere near me...

bucklind17 03-30-2011 07:17 PM

I love her. "Kiss With a Fist" is my favorite but I love "Drumming", "Dog Days Are Over" and "You"ve Got the Love" a whole lot too. She's a fantastic performer, I pretty much realized i loved her when she was on SNL. So glad for that!

diane_k 08-11-2011 12:24 PM

That outfit is a love child of Stevie and Tina Turner. And those heels? Forgetaboutit.

RickRobert 08-11-2011 12:48 PM

I really liked Lungs, and the alternate version of I'm Not Calling You A Liar that was Dragon Age 2's credits theme.

Mmmmmmm so good.

bluefox4000 08-12-2011 08:51 AM

This band rocks my world. Florence's voice is, to me, the best thing to come around in a while. And Lungs is one of my top albums of the past decade.....so go Flo:nod:

Finally! Thank god!

ButterCookie 08-24-2011 05:39 AM

Guh, I am so in love. She never fails to be exquisite.

Christopher 08-24-2011 10:33 AM

Beautiful song! So haunting, I got caught up in it and swept away immediately upon listen. It's so about time. I cannot wait for the record, It seems like forever.

Florence 1st caught my attention summer of 09' when I read about her being obsessed with Stevie & watching all her YouTube performances, studying her stage moves, etc.. So of course I had to check her out right away. But they really milked "Lungs", mostly because it took another year to finally catch on in the US. Anyway I guess it has not been that long if you consider we're used to waiting 7-10yrs for new Stevie Nicks material:nod:

nailatixela 08-24-2011 10:44 AM

Yes! I've been listening to the new track over and over. When does the new album come out in the US?

I believe November 7th.
Just borrowed "Lungs" from my local Library. Great stuff. I enjoyed The Chain cover as well on youtube.

BombaySapphire3 08-29-2011 10:18 PM

Wow.. this is really a beautiful and atmospheric song .Artist like this give me hope for the future of music.

I caught on to Florence & The Machine late in the game so for me, Lungs just came out but it really didn't. A new release is tremendously exciting.

KayStar 08-30-2011 06:22 PM

I've been lucky enough to see Florence and The Machine live a couple of years ago when she performed at Reading Festival. She done an accoustic set on a really small stage and she was amazing! Then later on done a full set in a bigger tent and she is one of the best live acts i have ever seen. I'm pleased she's getting recognition over in the US, someone with such a unique voice and talent deserves it.:)

skcin 08-31-2011 09:14 AM

I love F&TM, but this tune did not grab me right away. Maybe it will grow on me.

I wish I knew about "Lungs" when it was released. I definetly would have seen a show or two. The music and vocals are just beautiful. In a very short time Florence + the Machine have become one of my favorite musical acts and I can't wait for a live show...until then youtube.

I would have never discovered her if I didn't catch a performance she made on some TV show here in the US. Rarely do I see a new/unfamiliar artist that motivates me enough to go out an buy their album. But I found Florence and the Machine to be very intriguing; something very interesting and different about her. I'm an official fan now, and look forward to seeing everything she does in her career.

I can recognize Lady Gaga's talent, but she's just not my cup of tea. Florence is the one I go ga ga for!

From a Kansas City review of Florence and the Machine's show:
December 6, 2011

The band comprises an unusual instrumental mix that somehow manages to sound organic and fluent: guitars, drums and percussion (two drummers, at times), two keyboards, a harp and two backup singers. Despite all that goes on around and behind her, Welch is the unyielding center of attention: a spinning, dancing hippie-gypsy with an arresting voice. Comparisons to Stevie Nicks are purely visual. Welch’s vocal power and range are more in the vicinity of Robert Plant or Ann Wilson of Heart. She lacquers hers with some warm, operatic soul.

Other comparisons are apt: traits and strains of Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Evanescence and the classic British folk band Renaissance come and go into and out of the Machine’s music.

I agree with this. She definitely has some of Stevie's mystical whimsy vibe going on and she tends to dress a bit like her a times, but she doesn't really sound like her. She's a vocal belter for sure, but her voice doesn't sound like Stevie's at all which is cool because Stevie's voice is one of the most unique and distinct in rock-- I don't want anyone else to sound like her! I think it's cool that Stevie is one of Florence's influences though.

skcin 12-07-2011 04:41 PM

^ I agree. I don't think anyone's ever compared them vocally. It's the whole mysterious image - the live performances & stage clothes mainly. And if I recall correctly, Flo has cited Stevie & Mac as musical influences.

I mean, come ON, how can you watch this & NOT think of Stevie in the Day on the Green footage?

Yeah, but Stevie would never show that much leg ;) :p

TrueFaith77 12-08-2011 08:40 AM

As with many contemporary acts who cite Mac as an influence, I find in their music evidence that they hear/respond to VERY DIFFERENT things in the Mac than I do.

Like someone else pointed out it would seem like the influence is mostly sartorial.

mottabam 12-09-2011 03:50 PM

I just wish the "Ceremonials" tour was more extensive in the USA. Really, just 5 dates, and most of them in California. Was really hoping to see Florence this time around.:distress:
