How is Secret Love holding up?

It's been about month since this single dropped. Are you guys still listening to it? Has it got any staying power in your heads?

RockALittle250 03-02-2011 11:27 AM

According to the charts, quite well. It's holding its own and then some.

I know that. It's doing decent on the charts. Let's hope it surpasses Everyday which only hit #14 on that chart. The pop charts seem out of the question.

That's not what I mean though. Has your opinion changed? Does the song have any staying power in your mind?

StevieNicksfann 03-02-2011 11:47 AM

I still adore it and listen to it at least once if not more a day

Sahara 03-02-2011 11:52 AM

I try to keep away from it most days because I think that, genuinely great as it is, there are even better songs waiting for us on the album. And that thought makes me jittery and giggly and excited and I can't concentrate on what I'm supposed to be doing!
I suppose that means that yes, it does have staying power for me.

RockALittle250 03-02-2011 12:00 PM

It's a great lead-off single to get people reintroduced to her work. When the album is released, it won't be the strongest track.

I haven't listened to it in a while because I don't want to wear it out too soon. Who knows if we'll get a second single in the next two months.

louielouie2000 03-02-2011 12:21 PM

I'm not really listening to it anymore. Mostly because I've already absorbed it, and don't want to wear it out.

markolas 03-02-2011 12:39 PM

Haven't listened to it in the last couple of weeks, but that's not to say I never will again. It's a nice enough song, but I'm really looking forward to the album - I hope there will be some more interesting tracks on it (and it sounds like there will be).

It's too early to tell if it has "staying power" with me - 10 years later, I'm still queuing up "Sorcerer" and "Candlebright" for an occasional listen, so ask me again in a few years. :)

Ditto.....

SNicksed 03-02-2011 12:55 PM

It's just starting to get airplay here in the Albany area. Just heard it on our classic rock station for the first time. Made my day and the dj seemed to be really digging it!

Ghosty 03-02-2011 01:16 PM

I only listened to it a few times when I first saw it out there. I couldn't believe it was the first single. I couldn't believe it was even a demo that she would ever even think of re-doing for release. It's never been a favorite of mine. I think what gets me is the "ooo-eee, listen to me" part. It always has made me sort of cringe. When I hear ooo-eee I think of "eeee" like in "eeeee! a big hairy spider!" or "sue-EEEEE! here piggy, piggy!" It just grates on me. Maybe I'm just weird though.

I wish she had changed it to "but we've already passed it, I cry, ooo-ooo, oo-ooo oo-oooo, my secret love secretly die." Or put in some quick simple line.

But it still just is not a favorite song of mine. Too simple, not overly catchy, pretty short and not many lyrics. I do like this new version better, the music is better. But still...kind of boring to me.

But I'm still looking forward to the cd. I can't wait to hear the newer songs she'll have on it.

louielouie2000 03-02-2011 01:24 PM

^I agree, it would never have been a song I'd have brought out of the vault if I were Stevie. However, I'm pretty impressed at what Dave did with the musty old demo. I think it's a very decent song, and God knows, it's better than any of Stevie's singles since Rooms On Fire.

I'm surprised I haven't heard Secret Love on the radio, yet. Austin is usually pretty far ahead of the curve in regards to adding new songs to the radio before they become popular.

ontheEdgeof17 03-02-2011 01:44 PM

I had my Stevie itunes random mix on last night and it came on. It was the first time I heard it in a few weeks. Needless to say, I still like it, but lilke everyone else, I am trying not to wear it out.

Ya, I do like the music of it much better. It makes me look forward to the whole cd, hearing what he did with a demo I never liked.

Hawkeye 03-02-2011 02:16 PM

I, like many of you am limiting how much I'll allow myself to listen to Secret Love. The fact that every couple days I have to break my rule and "must" hear Secret Love says a lot. It is holding up. I'm very confident it's not one of the best songs on the album, I'm thinking it's got to be under the halway mark. I would be disspointed if it was as good as it gets. I would bet my house it isn't tho.

If I'm pitting it solely against the lead off singles to TISL and SYW (Stevie's songs) then it wins by a larger margin then the eagles beat the redskins on Monday Night Football this year (it was 50 something to 14 when i gave up for those who were confused by that) I can't belive the love Everyday is unrightfully getting in the non- Stevie written songs thread. It's the definition of bland. And if Stevie truly goes out of her way to release the most middle of the road "commercial" sounding song first and Secret Love is as middle of the road as it gets, I'm VERY Pleased.

KarmaContestant 03-02-2011 03:45 PM

I haven't listened to it much, but it's stuck in my head a lot. I usually listen to it in the car since I don't have an actual CD copy of it (when at home I prefer listening to CDs on my home stereo rather than digital files)

I played the **** out of it after I first heard it. Then the nuance wore off. When I do play it now, it still strikes me as a really good song. Not a standout HIT, but one I can see nestled amongst other songs on IYD, complementing the rest of the album quite nicely.

Could this song be a "sleeper" hit for Stevie. I'm starting to think maybe?
The song seems to be building very slowly. This weeks debut on Bilboards Top 40 AC chart @29, and the song is getting more airplay - here in Denver 2 radio stations (KBCO & KOSI) added it & David Wild just tweeted "heard "Secret Love" on the radio, and it sounds FANTASTIC over car speakers -- the ultimate test of a great tune."

Back to the question at hand. I, like many of you, am abstaining from secret love... because I do not want my love to secretly die.
But seriously, when I do listen, I'm still impressed. It's a good song. And Stevie's buttery vocal still has me reeling in ecstasy. But just like many of you here, I feel the same way - that this song will probably land somewhere in the middle once I hear the other IYD tracks. And we'll all be screaming WHY o' Why did she release THAT song as the 1st single. Did she have a brain tumor fro breakfast that morning?

Nathan 03-02-2011 08:35 PM

I still love it!

I had to make a rule like that when SYW came out. I played Thrown Down, Miranda and EFO so much that I was in danger of overdosing on them, so I had a rule that I could only listen to them if I listened to the whole album. I didn't want to lose sight of what had made them special upon first listen.

interesting Louie. i have a BFF in Austin and she heard it. called me to say Stevie had a new song out, asked if i knew that. then immediately realized how ridiculous was her question and said, " it's a good song. doesn't sound like 'listen to me, i'm desperate to be heard' "

It's hard to tell, but secretly I been wondering the same thing. The song is sneaky. It's small, yet, complex at the same time. Think about it. It doesn't really sound like much of anything else. She's not repeating the chorus a thousand times like usual. It's dreamy, drippy and dramatic. Sometimes I listen it and I'm like it's ok. Other times I listen to it and love it. It's a good release. His production just keeps you guessing, makes it interesting and I bet it does sound good on the radio.

I agree! I think the song just pops out of my car...course I have a 9-Speaker System, but still stock. The song thumps on thru and makes me secretly smile.

BigAl84 03-03-2011 12:01 PM

does anyone else notice how awesome the snair drum snaps (on car speakers) right before "i'm not asking for forgiveness from you"

It's pretty great, wish it would do that on normal speakers!

skcin 03-03-2011 12:20 PM

Pleasant surprise last night - they played it on our classic rock station 97 Rock.

Does your BFF remember what station played it? :D

atlnightbird 03-03-2011 01:50 PM

according to my ipod...I have played it 41 times since I downloaded it

TerraRhiannon 03-03-2011 05:44 PM

I still listen to it daily. But I still listen to her other stuff daily, so not a surprise. This is my iPod play count for Secret Love:

Photobucket

It says 264, I actually beg to differ... but whatever.

Keith 03-03-2011 05:57 PM

well..

I'm at 188 listens on my ipod...

What does the whole album sound like? I know it's completed, the music is done, yet I can't even try to imagine how it plays.. I just want to hear it.. Two months is not really a long time, but does seem like an eternity.. at least I have the MSG concert to look forward to..

up to 189 :-)

just a starved for new music Stevie Nicks fan..

Erin 03-03-2011 07:50 PM

I heard it while waiting in line at Subway today. I think they had the "Lite" radio station on.

Wow! "Secret Love" actually is the most listened song on my ipod at a whopping "18" plays.. lol. I have had my ipod for a year and a half and have over 5500 songs on there, so there is a huge variety.. I rarely listen to the same stuff over and over (at least not in succession). But that is a LOT of plays for me considering I've only had the song for a month and a half... the song is ingrained in my mind from those plays and I sing it to myself a lot. I think it's the first favorite new Stevie track I have fallen in love with for a long time.. probably since the title track of TISL (which also gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it).. well I guess I loved "Not Make Believe" also from first listen, but that one didn't give me goosebumps. With "Secret Love", it was the vocal that gave me goosebumps on the first listen.. incredible!

SapphireSister 03-03-2011 08:13 PM

I think I'm up to a whole 20 listens and I've come to the same conclusion - I just don't love this song. It's o.k. to me but I'm just not that crazy about the music or lyrics. The production and mixing is fabulous though! It is however better than Every Day but that's not saying much. I'm not bummed out though because I know there are other songs on the album I love.

of the 8 songs you heard, about how many would you say are better then Secret Love. An I don't remember is fine but IF you can.

Well before I answer your question a couple points: first of all, I screamed out loud when Secret Love started playing because I was excited to hear something I knew and I wanted Stevie to know how excited we are for the new single. Secondly, they had the most amazing sound system so to hear it like that "in stereo" made it slightly more desirable.

To answer your question honestly, I really have to listen to a song more than once to make a judgment on it. I definitely like 2 (Annabelle and LFTM/Twilight) of the songs better but cannot make an accurate assessment until I hear them again. It wasn't really a fair measure because I've heard Secret Love before if that makes sense.

How did Secret Love mesh into the song after it? Did the abrupt ending fit in any way with the intro of the next song?

I didn't notice any of the songs NOT meshing well together but remember, my eyes were on Stevie rockin' out in the corner the entire time so I wasn't 100% focused on the music.

she has a friend with child, living with her and her new husband so she is a tad distracted. she was just excited about a new Stevie song and the fact that it wasn't some "believe-esque" grasp at popularity.

ejof17 03-06-2011 03:44 PM

It's a much better single than Planets or Every Day. Every Day was the AC single and to me it just dragged and was lack luster. No real hook. Sorcerer was too "out there" to be a main stream hit though a great song.

Her voice is much richer on Secret Love than anything she has done recently in my humble opinion.

Jondalar 03-06-2011 04:18 PM

There were no real singles off TISL except maybe Everyday. The only people who champion Planets and Sorcerer are her fans. The record company did a good job selling that album. They got VH1 to do that promotion. Hence, Stevie sold over 100,000 the opening week. That's why the album went gold. It was not there fault that people did not take to her singles. I do think that Secret Love is a much better single. However, now I think Stevie has to deal with agism prejudice.

Hopefully, the record company can do something ingenious to get that album sold. And I hope that this album gets good word of mouth and has some staying power.

Three promo singles: Both Everyday and Planets were released at the same time to radio in late March, 2001 with both singles being reviewed at the same time by Billboard in April, 2001. Everyday was geared towards AC and Planets to Triple A, Mainstream Rock and Classic rock stations....

Planets was later remixed, released as a maxi single in June, debuted at #5 on the Top 50 Maxi Single Sales chart in July, debuted at #38 on the Top 50 Dance Charts in mid July, 2001, began it's life at #36 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales Chart in July, hit #1 on the dance charts in August & went on to be nominated for a Grammy for Rock Vocal Performance. Incidentally at the same time she was #1 on the Dance Charts with Planets, Bootylicious for which she received a writing credit was #1 on the Hot 100.

Sorcerer was released to radio in probably August/Sept, 2001, was reviewed by Billboard in late July, 2001 - made it's first appearance on the AC charts #27 in late October, 2001 and peaked at #21 on the AC charts in late Nov, 2001.
