The Grammys
No wonder it takes three hours & they have to present some awards off camera:
http://www.grammy.com/nominees I could not believe how many categories they have. I'll probably watch about half before I fall asleep. Some artists I like have been nominated like Maroon 5, Kings of Leon, Joss Stone, The Black Keys (which I've just started getting into their music since I saw them on SNL), & even Tom Petty was nominated for something. So I'll be watching somewhat. Anyone else? Maybe you'll watch just to see what Gaga is wearing? Lee :) |
I haven't watched the Grammy's since 2007. If Stevie isn't there, Viv ain't interested.
|
I'll definitely be watching with a bowl of popcorn in my lap. :)
|
No reason to watch, 2010 was a fail year in music.

Esperanza Spalding (up for Best New Artist) came an performed for my choir at school last year... so weird that she was sitting in my choir room a few feet away from us, and now she's up for a grammy.
|
I hope Florence and the Machine win Best New Artist. If Justin Bieber wins, just ugh. :distress:
|
I will definitely be watching out of boredom and also, I DO want to see what Gaga is wearing :o Also Eminem will be there and he's my home dog.
In my opinion these should be the winners: Best New Album: Recovery (Em) Best New Artist: Florence + the Machine Best Pop Vocal Performance: Just The Way You Are (Bruno) Best Hard Rock Performance: Let Me Hear You Scream (Ozzy) Best Rock Album: Mojo (Tom) Best Rap Solo Performance: Over or Not Afraid And I don't really give a poop about the rest of them:laugh:. |
Don't care about anything except Best Pop Vocal Performance. Go Adam go! :blob2::blob2::blob2:

Also I do really want to see Barbra Streisand :o |
A friend from high school (he graduated last year, a year ahead of me) is going to the Grammy's tonight. Needless to say, I'm very jealous of him haha, but I'm looking forward to any stories he'll have.
Looking forward to it honestly. I'll be watching while I finish my homework haha. |
Does anyone have a streaming link?

Are the grammys tonight? I haven't really been paying attention this year, unlike last year, when we were all anticipating what ended up being The Worst Duet Of All Time Ever™
All I want to know is what GaGa is wearing. I wonder if she can top that meat dress  |
All I care about-
Best Metal Performance: El Dorado (Iron Maiden) Best Hard Rock Performance: Let Me Hear You Scream (Ozzy Osbourne) Best Americana Album: The List (Roseanne Cash) Best Pop Vocal Album: The Fame Monster (Lady Gaga) Best New Artist: Florence and the Machine |

I just saw that on the BBC. God love her, she's as mad as a teapot. She keeps things interesting though

Janice would like to know why she wasn't invited to perform at the Grammy's with Cee Lo and Gwyneth. |
Cee Lo Green performance kicked ass!
I wish people whose name is not Steve Perry would stop trying to sing Don't Stop Believin'. And it was good to see Cyndi Lauper in the crowd! Other than that, it has been pretty meh. |
I AM SO HAPPY THAT ESPERANZA SPALDING WON BEST NEW ARTIST! And shocked.
She came and sang/played bass for our choir class last year. She wasn't even on a stage or anything, she was just in our choir room in a chair in front of our risers, talking to us and answering questions... and now here she is just a year later, performing at the Grammy's and winning Best New Artist.. beating JUSTIN BIEBER... whoa. |

One of my friends was majorly upset that Florence + the Machine lost. Like full on rage. Also enjoyed seeing the Avett Brothers get some exposure, they sounded great. |
I know I must be getting old... but I just feel like the world has moved on in a direction that I am obviously not paying much attention to. First off- the obvious. What the hell happened to Bob Dylan? And what of his backing band of effusive, merry, bearded steampunk hipsters? Yeah, I've known about the whole neo-Victorian hipster thing from Williamsburg; it's been around for at least a few years now. But I had no idea it was so mainstream and that every up-and-coming "alternative" band was doing it. On the one hand I am glad that the music is coming from a more melodic, acoustic place. On the other hand, it already seems a bit formulaic and cliched. And Arcade Fire is nothing special. I mean, there are so many better "alternative" bands out there- they are just hype, hype, hype.
Other random thoughts... I'm afraid the world may have lost one of its great wonders- Barbra Streisand's voice. I'm tempted to think that she has allowed her voice to go to seed due to dis-use; I remember seeing an interview in which she admitted to never listening to music or singing around the house. You gotta use it or lost it! Mick Jagger sounded fantastic and, by golly, he hasn't lost a step, even if he looks creepier than ever... I love the fact that Train namechecked Howard Stern, who really was their biggest cheerleader when the rest of the world forgot about them... I can't stand the schmaltzy crap singles put out by Bruno Mars, but you can't deny that he is very, very talented. Jonelle Whats-her-face too. It just helps to underscore how absolutely worthless Bieber and Usher are by comparison. |

Off the radio? 2010 was a great year for music! Music these days is like...Taco Bell or Wendy's. No matter what you order, it's the same old **** rearranged to make something different. No matter where you go or who makes it, it all tastes the same. If you only eat fast food, eventually it will seem as though all food is garbage. Then one day you find a restaurant that serves delicious hand-made food from local ingredients, with bright colors and interesting flavor combinations - and then you realize there is a whole world of interesting things to eat if you just look around for it. Music is the same way. |

I only watched literally a couple of minutes of the Grammys. I was channel surfing and saw Norah Jones singing Dolly Parton's Jolene... and that made my night! :D |

The Avett Bros are from the Charlotte, NC area where I lived for years... and thus people are completely NUTS about them there. I just don't get the phenomena behind them either. |

2011 should be better, I think, at least based on announced releases. |
Bob Dylan was absolutely terrible. Worst of the night, easily.
|
Aw man, you guys're breaking my heart.

But seriously, while they're not the most amazing singers or pickers I think they've got a good brand of folk rock goin on. I mean, they really rock, and for me that's what separates them from the pack of bearded hipster indie folk. I also dig their lyrical style. A bit reminiscent of Doc Watson and Townes Van Zandt. Also, don't know if you're a fan of country(ish) music, but that helps. Anyway, cool to hear that they're as nice as they seemed when I got my albums signed. Now it's time for me to be one of those annoying fans and link to one of my favorite songs of theirs: Quote:
Now, let me be hypocritical, and ask... can somebody explain the Mumford & Sons' appeal to me? |
Quote:
Oh, they couldn't have been any nicer! Nice, regular people! They sold out the 800 capacity venue, at which I work, last time. |
Viral/innovative marketing for a new "Bruce Almighty" sequel? |

I like alot of the different subgenres of country, the more classic sound, honkytonk, country/folk rock like the Flying Burrito Bros. Modern mainstream country for the most part though.. it's just pop with twangy accents and a bit of pedal steel. Not feelin' it. |

I've got everything they ever released(8 CDs, that I can think of), and dozens of live shows. I've also got several live shows on DVD, too. The fan community for them, back when they were going strong, shared everything! You DO know, that their show stopping multi-instrumentalist, Donnie Herron, was on the Grammys with Bob Dylan, right? Speaking of nice guys! Donnie is the nicest guy in the business. |
