Is Stevie a Christian? (Wait, hear me out...)

I have an admittedly crazy-wack0 late-night thought that I'd like to bounce off of everyone just to hear what they say. First up, let me "qualify" it with this "caveat,"
I am NOT naive about her and nothing would surprise me, barely just short of
considering the possibility of there being a whole string of ex-boyfriends' bodies
hidden in the desert someplace. ;) But - - - Does anyone ever wonder if she made
the WHOLE thing up, in order to help people and guide them towards a "clean" life and spirituality?
Or to put it frankly - Is Stevie actually a Christian?

Before you answer, consider the following:

1.) The imagery she uses in her shows - for example, a dove flying through the air - clearly "borrowed" from Christianity and a very "pro-peace"image.

2.) I challenge you to do a thorough google search for images of her and NOT find a picture of her holding a book.

3.) She's CLEARLY heavily influenced by Charles Dickens, whose stories are based on his deep belief in Christianity and are extremely moral. Oscar Wilde is an admitted influence too - while certain churches may have their "differences" with him, his stories are, i.m.o., ultimately very moral.

4.) Think of all the LIVES she's saved - both from convincing people to get off of drugs, and saving people from committing suicide. I can't COUNT how many people in the discussion boards and in Nicksfix chat have told me that they literally would have killed themselves were it not for Stevie.

5.) Has there ever - ONCE - been a video tape or film made of Stevie having a SERIOUS knock-down drag out with Lindsey which was not officially sold by Warner Brothers for marketing purposes? How many times has Lindsey heard a story Stevie has told of their fighting, gotten a shocked look on his face and said something like "...If she SAYS so!"

6.) How much has Stevie given to charity over the years? How many lives has the heart center she and her Dad built saved so far? She gave $10,000 to for tsunami relief the day after it happened.

7.) How many of her songs COULD be interpreted - if one chooses - to be "pro-Christianity?" I never thought of this until now but - "Then suddenly there was no
one standing in the hallway" - I've always thought, frankly, that it's about losing your virginity, but, taken a certain way . . . Well, it's certainly a song that's in favor of life as opposed to death. And how many references to angels does she have in her songs?
"It's as close - to being - in HEAVEN!" An anti-adultery song. Would you call "The Highwayman" an "immoral" song? Or a song filled with optimism that although things are complex, there will always be a positive outcome if one sticks with one's beliefs?

8.) SO much partying in the rock scene in the 80s. WILD parties. With, frankly, some people who were extremely self-centered and money hungry. Where's the PHOTOS, people??? There's a grand total of *zero* of them, as everyone knows.

9.) Either way, she clearly loved her Dad SO much - - - with all that love, with all that support - with him THERE ON TOUR with her - - is there actually a real possibility that she DIDN'T "stay Amber"?

10.) How many fans and people who have worked with her consider Stevie to be a genuinely good, if imperfect, person? An honest one? A kind one? How many fans have said "she was so NICE to me" or "she was so HUMBLE!" ?

11.) WHERE did Stevie and Lindsey meet, again???

And finally, check this out -

"I choose to be his confidant
And to keep him from the fire
I choose to be quietly discreet
If that is his desire
I touch with gossamer wings
To be quiet around you
There is so much going on
You could easily
Wake up with a stranger

It's not something that you plan
One night in a world of pain
And you finally understand
Not all the king's horses, not all the king's men
Could put it back together

You say you wouldn't do this for very long
The applause from it all is so defining
Well it bounces off the wall at you
When the miracle is happening
High priestess...she's the keeper of the peace in this
Twice as much, intensified
What people will do
To get...this...high

It's not something that you plan
One night in a world of pain
And you finally understand
Not all the king's horses, not all the king's men
Could put it back together

And now alone in my room
As it all begins again
Was I so wrong
Why am I always so intense?
In this same place I sit
The same place as before
Well I came all the way here
Just to watch you walk out that door

I didn't ask when you shook your head
I always accepted what you said
As the truth and the truth only
Well, it's not enough that you depend on me
And it's not enough that you say you love me
It's not enough to just save face
Because sometimes
You just fall from grace

Sometimes
You just fall from grace

Maybe I am calmer now
Maybe things are fine
Maybe I made the whole thing up
Maybe it isn't a lie
Maybe the reason I say these things
Is to bring you back alive
and maybe I fought this long and this hard
Just to make sure you survive!"

So there 'ya go! - Some total heresy, STRAIGHT out of The Twilight Zone!
What do you guys think? :D

I think she's always been a spiritual person in her beliefs and she believes in God. I just think she liked dressing in flowy things and it became a part of her songs and image and she liked playing the part of a witch for fun and what she became known for, but never was one personally.

holidayroad 02-13-2011 10:06 AM

I think she is spiritual in varied ways. It would not surprise me if she said she believes a little of every religion, as long as it is helpful to the person believing it.

CADreaming 02-13-2011 10:23 AM

I think she was raised with Christian beliefs and went to a few Catholic schools, but I've never heard if her family was Catholic. Does anyone know if it is or was in her generation common for protestants to go to parochial schools?

I believe she was raised Episcopalian ..kind of a watered down Catholicism IMO.

nofearonlylove 02-13-2011 10:59 AM

I personally, do not think Stevie follows any religion at all.

Her family may have followed some sort of organized religion but I do believe that she chose to go her own way as far as her spirituality goes, and firmly believes in anyone's choice to believe in what THEY want. She may mention God and "heavenly images" but there are all kinds of God's to sing about, all kinds of heavens, all kinds of angels, etc. The Christian God isn't the only one that exists. Lots of people use the term "God" as a general term for their "spiritual belief", whatever it may be.

Also, I do not see how all of her good deeds and charitable donations, the anti-drug rants, etc....make her a Christian? One does not have to be a Christian to do all of these things. Also, most Christians promote Christianity, however minor. Stevie has never once mentioned her religious beliefs, which is usually very difficult for a Christian to do (for example, in liner notes in albums, thank you speeches for awards...."I first would like to thank GOD..." - I've never known Stevie to say this).

Stevie is also WAY too interested in other things to be considered a "Christian" (Vampires, Magick, Stars & Moons, Witches, etc).

I don't mean to sound judgmental of the Christian religion, but again... charity is not synonymous with Christianity alone, nor is the term "God".

Stevie is spiritual, believes in a higher power, but I do not believe she follows ANY organized religion.

Smiles :)
Erica

WildHearted 02-13-2011 11:05 AM

Well, you certainly can be interested in stars/moons/mythology and be a Christian. However, while Stevie was likely raised with some form of Christianity (and she may very well hold onto those beliefs today, who knows), I don't think she practices it in an organized way at all anymore. She believes in God per her own admission, but like stated above, it seems that she just kind of does her own thing as far as her beliefs/spirituality go - which is perfectly fine.

SapphireSister 02-13-2011 11:57 AM

She's a witch, get a life.

tilthefirefades 02-13-2011 12:34 PM

I think you can be a kind person and not be a Christian

Jondalar 02-13-2011 12:42 PM

She's obviously a witch and a satanist. She makes regular ritual sacrifices to satan with her coven. Blah...

If a creative person would of created the Justice League 3000 years ago, we would all be worshipping Wonder Woman and Superman. Frankly, when I think of Christian or some other religions, I think of hypocrites.

Your thread makes ZERO sense Ghost Tracker, sorry. I don't see the correlation between half that Stevie and Stevie being a christian. And your interpetation of of the line in EO17 is just flat out wrong. Its about the moment her uncle died and she was alone in the hallway, she said this many times.

Josh2003 02-13-2011 02:33 PM

Holding a book? What does that have to do with anything? And I don't think I've EVER seen a picture of Stevie holding a book...

1sttimelongtime 02-13-2011 05:09 PM

If she were a Christian, wouldnt it be more obvious? Most christians I know are forever stuffing their religion down people's throats.

I fail to see how anything on that list can point to her being a christian.

I have to say I think it's sad that these kind of generalizations are made and I'm sorry if the only experiences you've had with Christians left you with that impression.

Not all Christians believe in "stuffing" their religion down other's throats, so if Stevie was a Christian it may not be so obvious.

I know plenty of Christians who are AMAZING people and would never thing of loading me with their beliefs. Christians can be awesome you know. This is coming from an Atheist.

I think she probably had Christian beliefs at one time, and probably still believes in "a God"... but I don't think she's a practicing Christian, no.

It's from an old demo of Stevie's called "Stay Amber," which is apparently
about her Dad's love for her. "Always stay Amber, remember to be kind
etc." Always be true to yourself, in other words. Towards the end of
the song she promises to "remember," which she rhymed beautifully
with "Amber." It's a beautiful song and worth doing a search for i.m.o.

I think it's fair to say that no interpretation of a Stevie Nicks song is ever wrong, and Stevie has said a lot of things over the years. ;)

WildHearted 02-13-2011 06:12 PM

While I think it's true that most things in Stevie's songs are very open to interpretation... the 'no one left standing in the hall' line is one of the few that I don't really think is. It's pretty straightforward in its self, not to mention that she has specifically said what it was referencing and that was... her going down the hallway trying to find a family member after her uncle passed.

I've always felt there's a great deal of symbolism in it as well, though.

At the Young Life Christian meeting at some random person's living room, yes. But Stevie pointedly said it was something she went to just to get out of the house and socialize.

StandbackStevie 02-13-2011 08:31 PM

Stevie was raised Christian believe she is raised Episcopalian and went to catholic schools but I do believe she is still believes in God on more of a Spiritual level and probably open to other believes too. I have read she was raised Epicopalian and went to Catholic Schools when she was younger.

The only overtly religious reference I’m aware of that Stevie ever made was her letter to the troops (around 1991) which was printed in a military newsletter called ‘Stars and Stripes’ (or something like that).

She wrote something about clutching the cross around her neck (Stevie was really into cross jewelry at this time) and sending its ‘energy’ to the soldiers overseas. She also included the "For God so loved the world... etc., etc.” passage in the letter.

The letter was reprinted in some old fanzine I believe, and mentioned in one of the Ed Wincentsen bios.

from an interview from 1998 quote from Stevie about her religion

"I am religious," Nicks explains. I wasn't raised in any religion, because we were always moving when I was a kid and didn't get involved in any church. But I believe there've been angels with me constantly through these last 20 years, or I wouldn't be alive. I pray a lot. In the last few years I've asked for things from God, and he's given them to me. And there were things I thought were going to kill me, and he fixed them. I felt that because I was fat I wasn't talented anymore; I was destroying this gift God gave me and asked for help. Now I'm happy, even outside my music, and enjoying my life.

Those are the extremists for you. As a Christian myself and growing up in a Christian household, there are plenty of people who that would bother, and there are also plenty of people who that would not bother. It just depends on the denomination or even the particular church or person.

Hawkeye 02-14-2011 05:11 PM

now that I think about it, if we count demos, there's more Angels in Stevie lyrics then the bible

~GoldDustWoman~ 02-14-2011 05:19 PM

I'm a Wiccan, and I hate to say it but i'm one of the ones that thinks she might be a Wiccan, or probably just really really spiritual cause of the crystal thing i saw an interview where she said something about she gets energy from crystal so she likes to keep them when she is given them or something. Plus I saw an interview where she said i'm not a witch, but i'm not a black magic witch...mmmmh...idk i'm one of the few I guess. I get the impression she's hiding it imo.

Anyway....getting into the symbolism...of holding books...Sister of the Moon anyone?

I agree with you Wildhearted also why not like stars and moons we all do i would think I am a gay catholic christian i do believe in God and do pray depends on how far you take your beliefs and you can love Jesus and still love stars moons and fantasy if your a good person with a great heart and kind and try to do the right thing and treat everyone with kindness and respect its all good to me God created the earth universe and all the things we see even the stars and moons God has created so why not enjoy life and enjoy the stars and moons and everything we have on this wonderful amazing earth we have all around us so enjoy the stars and moons. I am more spiritual person I do believe in God and Jesus Christ and love the stars, moons and cystals too so it what ever connects to you in a higher power I do believe in Psychic Knowledge and I have some psychic abilities and trust it whether you call the holy spirit or spirit guide. I am very open minded to religious beliefs. I do believe Stevie is Spiritual and believes in God as she states in above interview.

That's right - I remember this now. She quoted John 3:16. I thought that was actually a pretty strong statement from her. Interesting.
