'Moonlight -- A Vampire's Dream' written in Brisbane, 2009

-- 02/10/11 --

Rock 'n Roll's reigning queen Stevie Nicks will be releasing her highly anticipated new CD "In Your Dreams" on May 3rd, it was announced today by Reprise Records. This will be Nicks' first CD of new material since the release of her Grammy nominated "Trouble in Shangri-La" ten years ago. "In Your Dreams" was written and recorded at Nicks' Los Angeles home and is co-produced by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard. Nicks and Stewart co-wrote seven of the album's thirteen songs.

"I had written a song in Brisbane, Australia when I was on tour with Fleetwood Mac in 2009 called 'Moonlight -- A Vampire's Dream' which was inspired by the 'New Moon' film. When I finished writing that song, which came together really quickly, I knew the time was right to start recording. We had a core group of five people who were at the heart of the creation of 'In Your Dreams.' Dave and myself, my longtime friend and musical director, Waddy Wachtel, and my girls, Sharon Celani and Lori Nicks. It was a perfect blend," commented Nicks.

"This was one of the most extraordinary experiences I've had making a record. It is the first album that I have had this kind of collaboration since the making of Rumours. Dave created a situation where I could be totally creative and focused on writing songs and making music. I cannot remember ever having this much fun making a record. Writing the songs and recording them in my home studio was the key element in how this music turned out. It made the whole process seem very similar to how we used to work back in the day," she concluded.

The first single "Secret Love" written by Nicks is currently on iTunes. "It was 1976 and Fleetwood Mac was opening for Peter Frampton at the time. It was written about a forbidden relationship -- not Peter and I," laughed Nicks. "I always knew that one day I was going to record the song."

Nicks is currently gearing up to join forces with fellow rocker Rod Stewart for the 16 city Heart & Soul Tour, one of the most anticipated music events of the year... The first show is scheduled on March 20th in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

Stevie Nicks is a multi Grammy Award winner and Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Her extraordinary career as a solo artist, songwriter, live performer and member of Fleetwood Mac is legendary. Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" was one of the biggest selling albums of all time. She has penned such Mac classics as "Landslide," "Dreams," "Gold Dust Woman" and "Rhiannon." As a solo artist, beginning with the five time platinum debut "Bella Donna," her solo hits include unforgettable singles such as "Edge of Seventeen," "Leather and Lace" and "Stand Back."

It might be a good idea to wait until you've heard the new music before you express how you feel about it.

Keep in mind that she said she was "inspired" by the Twilight movie. The lyrics could very well have nothing to do with those horrible stories.

Jondalar 02-10-2011 11:46 AM

I'm hoping this song is the atmospheric song I been waiting for. It's got spooky atmosphere written all over it.

APerfectLie 02-10-2011 11:48 AM

Perhaps I am in the minority, but this really excites me! I have had an obsession with vampires since way before the lamestream obsession hit. I hate that out of all the amazing vampire stories, Twilight was the one to inspire her, but I don't think this hampers the potential. I think this song could very well be very dark and cryptic. Perhaps a vampiric counterpart to Rhiannon, Stevie stepping back into the darkness she came out of in Bella Donna. Inspiration aside, I think the song and content could be amazing!

Diddo, I love Stevie because of the atmosphere. This song could be worthy of an Anne Rice novel, and she is by far my favorite author—a dark, sensual materpiece.

That's the Stevie I love too mystic and atmospheric. AND at its core, new moon is about being in love with 2 people at the same time
That is something I'm SURE Stevie Nicks can write about

BombaySapphire3 02-10-2011 12:14 PM

This one could really go either way.The more loosely it is based on the "Twilight" movie the better though IMO.I'm certainly willing to withhold judgement until I hear the song. After all one of my favorite Stevie songs ever is one about a lamp given to her by her mom.

Jondalar 02-10-2011 12:28 PM

Concrete Blonde based a whole album on Anne Rice's novel Lestat and it was by far the best thing they ever did. The album was called Bloodletting.

It's going to be nice to get some Gothic Stevie. The Wild Heart sounded sorta gothic to me.

There is also Annabel Lee which is totally awash in Gothic imagery.

WildHearted 02-10-2011 12:40 PM

This could be really good. I'm willing to bet she just drew some ideas from the movie, and isn't going to be writing a Ballad to Edward or anything of the sort :)

Sure, it's one thing to be "inspired" by a banal novel/movie series. But it's another thing to actually use the title of the movie in the song! Surely it's not the first time she's done this, e.g., "Beaty and the Beast," but at least she used a classic movie before. I mean, what if she was "inspired" by a Harry Potter movie and she wrote a song called "Hogwarts: A Wizard's Dream." The only good I can see in this is that she wrote this song very recently, so it will be a true reflection of where she is at currently as a songwriter. It may also be the first time she's written a song about something other than herself, that is, unless she takes on the voice of a vampire in this song.

Trying to be positive here!

Jondalar 02-10-2011 01:23 PM

You know the more I think about it, the more this album could be a total suprise. It could be an atmospheric, gothic gem, a worthy progression from the Wild Heart.

Stevie's song is called "Moonlight". The Twilight film which inspired her is called "New Moon". Yes the word "moon" is in both titles, but she didn't actually USE the title of the movie, as you suggest.

I went to one of these shows back in the 70's, it was at one of the satdium's Dodger/Anaheim?, but this is when I start digging the Mac!!!

SapphireSister 02-10-2011 02:04 PM

I hope I like it better than Secret Love .

I'm choosing to look at this song like it'll be the next Illume. Remember how Illume has (9/11) next to it? But unless you knew the back story from Stevie herself, you'd never guess it was a song about the terrorist attacks. I think Stevie's classier than just making blatant references... she always has been. For instance, according to her, Edge Of 17 is about John Lennon's murder. God knows, none of us would have ever been able to pick that one out had she not explained it to us. With the exception of That Made Me Stronger, Stevie's not very literal. I'm hoping it'll be the same way for this Twilight inspired song!!

Josh2003 02-10-2011 02:49 PM

Before we overreact, let's think back to all the things that have "inspired" Stevie to write songs:

-The OJ Simpson trial ("TISL")
-Monica Lewinsky ("Everybody Finds Out")
-A candle ("Illume")
-A cheesy airport novel ("Rhiannon")
-A highway sign ("Silver Springs")
-A lamp ("Blue Lamp")
-A crappy B-movie ("Wide Sargasso Sea")

And I think most of those songs turned out OK... :-)

EXACTLY! This "Moonlight" song might very well be one of the best things she's ever done. We'll just have to wait and see! I'm kind of excited, myself...and no, I'm NOT a "Twilight" fan at all.

BTW - I think "Wide Sargasso Sea" was a pretty good movie...made out of a GREAT story. I'm actually a bit more curious to see what THIS song sounds like more than the others.

TrueFaith77 02-10-2011 03:19 PM

At least it's guaranteed to be better than the movie. But it's still aiming low. Kate Bush was inspired by movie adaptations such as The Innocents and Wuthering Heights. Stevie was once inspired by Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast (and, apparently, digs Gone with the Wind--STAND BACK!) but I can't even imagine how New Moon--not the book! not the first Twilight movie (which is a better movie than any Stevie album has been album)!!--but New Moon the movie could inspire her or anyone beyond Taylor Lautner's emergence as a screen dream(though I preferred him in the first movie too). I WISH she had done a song for Red Riding Hood (which is bout to rock my world).

This really puts it into perspective, you're right! Stevie has a way of drawing from things in the most subtle or even unnoticeable ways, so until we actually hear the song I don't think there's any reason to worry.

All songwriters are like that. They need a small jumping off point to take flight.

True, true, all of the above. But what strikes me about the new song is that the subject matter is so close to the inspiration. It's one thing if she wrote a song about the relationships among the main characters in the movie in a generic kind of way. But this is literally about vampires, which would be like her writing a song called "Silver Springs: Dreams of a Highway Sign."

How do we know it's about vampires? She has said it was "inspired by" the movies. And if you reference the "A Vampire's Dream" in the title, I'll point you to "Doing the Best that I Can (Escape from Berlin)".

It could be...I've never seen it. I was just going off of the Wikipedia entry on it. Doesn't look like it had much staying power, or did very well commercially.

The connection to Berlin is a bit of a head scratcher, but at least she had the honesty to put it in parentheses, i.e., "in words unspoken..."

Since it is highly unlikely that the phrase "A Vampire's Dream" could be a recurrent refrain in the song (at least I hope not), I am guessing that this will be one of those Stevie songs where the song title does not get mentioned (or barely mentioned) in the lyrics, e.g., "Dreams," "Gate and Garden," "Sable on Blond," "The Nightmare," "Battle of the Dragon," "Edge of Seventeen," etc. Let's just hope the imagery is gothic but stops short of baring fangs and sucking blood.

Well a good hint came from David Wilde when he said that her album is full of vampires and ghosts

Yes, I have been attracted to vampires. It started in my childhood. I'm not sure I needed a song about them, but as everyone has pointed out, it's not like TISL is about the OJ Simpson trial. So, there might not be any cause for concern.

And for the gothic part, to me the main tension in a good vampire story is the same as it is in Jane Eyre. We can never be together and the longing for something that can never be might not be just dangerous, but deadly. The song can easily capture that theme without any stakes through the heart.

Anne Rice got me hooked on Vampires. No one writes likes her and Concrete Blondes Bloodletting is a great album based on her vampires.
