What do you think is the quintessential "Stevie" Performance?

Hi guys,

I have a friend who is just starting to become a Stevie fan and I posted a video to her facebook page which I think sums up her image/style/reputation, whateveryawannacall it... It is... (drumroll please)... Rosebud Rhiannon.

Ok, I know it's maybe a predictable, cliched choice but even thught it's with Fleetwood Mac everything about her image is in here. The song, the voice, the costume, the twirling, the atmosphere, the crazy last 2 minutes! I think it really is THE Stevie performance. What it doesn't do is reduce all of these elements to expected cliche, which we get in later years, but it shows why they all became such trademarks in the first place.

So, let the arguments begin.. what is your ultimate Stevie performance??

- Stand Back SNL '83
- God Dust Woman from The Dance.
- Nightbird Solid Gold '83

Aussie W/Heart 01-30-2011 07:07 AM

All of the above, i would like to add Stevie's first Solo performance HBO W/ W Dove concert, in particular Edge of 17.. Also Gold Dust Women Live in Japan..

seanthompson 01-30-2011 08:35 AM

From The Dance: Gold Dust Woman, Landslide, and Silver Springs. She was so in her element for these performances. As Magic as Magic gets.

I#ll hit her with Silver Springs from The Dance later. It's an incredible performance, and very important, but for an introductory one that has everything that makes up her "image" I'll go with Rosebud. I think the Silver Springs one works better when you know the back story.

This is one of my quintessential Stevie performances.

mitzo 01-30-2011 10:38 AM

Beauty and the Beast from Red Rocks 1986 or in Melbourne 200? with the orchestra.

nevedix20 01-30-2011 10:41 AM

Gold Dust Women The Dance forsure. the fire in her eyes was unmissable. she had the audience in the palm f her hands.

besides performances in the nineties Sisters of The Moon 1982 wins. coked out or not!!!

Midnight special of Rhiannon for me, it shows Stevie at her absolute best. Her image is perfect here, her voice is incredible, the band don't miss a beat... etc.

Also, a vote for Gold Dust Woman live in 1981

Sooo much lovely vibrato.

MissLadyLoki 01-30-2011 11:35 AM

I got 3 (somewhat obvious) ones you all probably know

1.Rhiannon (Rosebud)

2.Sisters of the Moon (Mirage show)

3.Gold Dust Woman (Japan show)

Quintessential: the most typical example or representation.

I hardly think Stevie dancing with a backup dancer as the most typical example or representation of her stage performances

You may like this performance, but it doesn't make it quintessential.

I agree with both Rosebud Rhiannon and Mirage tour Sisters of The Moon as being quintessential classic Stevie Nicks performances, and Gold Dust Woman & Silver Springs from The Dance being quintessential modern Stevie Nicks performances.

David 01-30-2011 12:40 PM

All good choices, but my quintessential Stevie is the outdoor festival years from the late '70s.

I love the 1983 SNL performance of Stand Back. Wish it was still on YouTube!!

fairydust75 01-30-2011 01:21 PM

I love "Gold and Braid" from her Live HBO concert in 1981.

I think it's more about the way she presents the song during this performance. Her vocal is outstanding and she carries a very intense tone throughout the song. In fact, it kinda seems like she's angry, vulnerable, and loving all at the same time during her delivery. I also find Stevie to be stunningly beautiful in red and extremely graceful during the dance with Brad.

"Rhiannon" (Rosebud, Midnight Special)

This version of "Dreams", watch?v=YEi7GPkxfsE . As far as I am concerned, there are the two live versions of "Rhiannon", there's this version of "Dreams", and then there's a huge black hole, followed by...

"Gold Dust Woman" (1981 version w/ Bob Welch and Mick Fleetwood)

Tusk era "Angel", watch?v=nN8MvFQKtz8

"Edge of Seventeen" (1981 version, the Lemme go get my white tablecloth one)

I think her Stand Back performance on Solid Gold was one of the best we ever had of that song on commercial videotape.

Agreed. The SNL version is great too, but I find the Solid Gold version to be superior.

The Rosebud Rhiannon. Period.

That one was very cool, but my favorite "Stand Back" video was the one from the Compton Terrace Sept. 25, 1983, Heart Association benefit.

This is one of my favorites. I think it shows many different sides of our girl. Obviously she's coked up but that's part of her history (as a person in recovery it means something to me). She's beautiful all the same. I love what she is wearing. She uses the shawl to become the white winged dove. I always loved the ballerina style with the leotards..and her body is beautiful (shout out to BubbaFleetwood right here). She sings, she dances, she gives it her all. I also love how she connects with the audience. She appears vulnerable at the end, crying maybe. I just love it. Maybe someone else loves it too!

pattyfan 02-01-2011 12:02 AM

Can we also nominate audio selections? If so, I'd nominate the Sin City Las Vegas 1977 performance of Rhiannon. I've heard many many live performances of that song, and this one by far is my favorite. She absolutely shreds the vocals at the end.

'Gold Dust Woman' from Japan, Rumours tour, is in my top three as well. She's utterly wasted (and I'd love to know what on, cos it looks like downers to me, rather than anything speedy, like coke) and she's got this slow, regal thing going on.

My other favourites are Rosebud 'Rhiannon' and 'Angel' from the Tusk doc. In fact, between those three, I think you get the whole Stevie thing: witchy, rock goddess and showgirl!

But this GDW, for me that's the absolute essence of 'rock on, ancient queen'.

There is two points that we need to define her.
Does Stevie's uniqueness show more with the Mac, or with her solo work?

mitzo 02-01-2011 10:01 AM

Both her live and studio work with FM is superior, IMO.

The above show is THE Stevie performance for me, as a whole.

I love all of the videos posted so far! This one isn't the "quintessential" Stevie performance with shawls billowing everywhere and spells spoken in tongue flying out her mouth, but I think this shows Stevie's natural beauty, both physically and vocally and what a true artist she is.

This one is epic - doesn't she have us all right in the palm of her hand, trying to catch every nuance of the phrasing, intonation, and waiting for the drama to reach a climax? Wow.

Regarding the vocal I think it might be the best live performance of the song I've ever heard.
