Perhaps this has been talked about already if not, here it is:

Yeah, Dave posted that on his website for his upcoming album several months back. Everyone seems to like the quality of Stevie's voice on that clip, but are not particularly enamored by the rather cliche lyrics.

ejof17 01-28-2011 08:35 PM

Yeah, I thought "yawn".

"Stevie Baby" intrigues me though.

Cliche lyrics? I love this song so far. The lyrics are deep and excellent. Her voice is excellent and they sound great together. This song seems to make sense, maybe that is cliche.

Josh2003 01-28-2011 09:40 PM

I feel like this could *maybe* be one that will grow on me. I'm not loving it right now...but I think it has potential...especially hearing it start to pick up a little bit with the drums.

I mean. The lyrics are true. I think both songs are kinda lovely. sigh. I think the whole album will be lovely.

Well, OK, a nice enough little clip from a country-tinged duet. This, plus Secret Love and the Everybody Loves You (demo?) snippet still leave me thinking "yes, that sounds pleasant, and?" I sure hope the album has more engaging stuff in it, stuff that makes me go "wow", rather than "uh huh."

I was pretty freaked out by only hearing the clips of Everybody Loves You, Cheaper Than Free, and Secret Love. Not to mention the fact she's written a song about the Twilight series . But then I heard the entirety of Secret Love, and my fears have been quelled. Plus, we know Mike Campbell is involved in this project, so that means we'll have at least a token few rocking songs. I think this record will be good... Dave clearly "gets" Stevie, he's been tweeting that he listens to her back catalogue, and her singing voice on the finished version of Secret Love is better than she's sounded in decades. I think Dave has probably brought out a side of Stevie we haven't seen since the 1980s. Yes, I've been a skeptic since the beginning of this project, but now I have a different feeling about the whole thing. In her interviews, she just has the best, most balanced views of her album. And her singing voice just says it all, too. She GIVES A DAMN once again! :D I just think it's all going to be okay. Who knew? ME with warm and fuzzy feelings! :p

In the words of Anelle from Steele Magnolias..."I have suspected this all along, Weezer!"

mitzo 01-29-2011 06:32 AM

I am not a fan of Mike Campbell's rockin' work with her in the past (can someone name some lovable work they've done?), but I am hoping Dave Stewart makes some nice castles in the air around Stevie's voice and music. In the end, it will all be about song choice and atmospheric arrangements, for me.

I can only think of Freedom and Greta as awesome Stevie / Mike Campbell songs. The rest aren't all that spectacular really.

mikebise 01-29-2011 01:28 PM

Greta
Imperial Hotel
You Like Me
Freedom
Fire Burning
The Mixdown
Whole Lotta Trouble
The Dance
Desert Angel

I love them all! :)

The song structure and the lyrics remind me of a nice ole Dolly Parton-ish ditty. I think it could be really good. The lyrical sentiment, judging just the clip seems to parallel "I Sing For The Things".

Josh2003 01-29-2011 03:48 PM

The more I listen to it, the more I'm reminded of "Insider"...

...although I still am not a fan of the lyrics.

Uh huh... nothing there that stirs the soul.

jannieC 01-29-2011 08:37 PM

I like the lyrics but I wish that their voices were harmonizing, rather than singing together in the same key (that's how it sounds to me, anyway  )

TrueFaith77 01-29-2011 08:41 PM

I love Greta.

Dodfather 01-30-2011 05:35 AM

Thanks for this. I couldn't get this to work when it was originally posted on Dave's site so I'm glad to have finally heard it.

God, those lyrics are AWFUL though. Her voice sounds great and it's lovely to hear her do a simple ballad and close harmony again but those lyrics really, really suck. I was predicting them by the end of the snippet ("feel" rhyming with real"). I hope there's a re-write before it goes on either album. Has it been decided/announced just whose album it's going on?

Apparently it's going on both their albums. Stevie liked the song so much, she wanted to include it on hers as well.

Oh dear. Could this be the That Made Me Stronger of the new album?! By that I mean nice music but bad lyrics.

I don't understand why people are saying "Bad Lyrics." These are great lyrics. They make sense and are heartfealt. Bad lyrics is chimpanzee lyrics in Jane or going out first or second person constantly, or pieced together snippets from various songs.

mikebise 01-30-2011 08:07 AM

Dave said Stevie liked it so much that they recorded another version for her album.

TWO versions, two albums.

I love "Cheaper Than Free"!!!! :blob2:

I will love it if there's another version. As I said, I think the sentiment is lovely and the arrangement is very nice so it has definite potential. It coukd be a work in progress that we heard anyway...

It seems like the snippet is the finished song on Dave's album.Sonically it does not seem to fit well with the production of "Secret Love" so another version for "In Your Dreams " would make sense.

You can hear one more verse of Dave's version at the 51:15 minute mark (toward the end) of Dave's episode of Music Business Radio here on our Progressive Rock station, Lightning 100 in Nashville.

http://l.wbx.me/l/?instId=fb368642-0...e-stewart.html

I have to say...I don't like these lyrics at all. :(
Even though it's still not the complete song, I don't see how anything can save it. The lyrics are just too...trite and cliche! Boo.

Oh gross... I never wanted to hear Stevie sing the words "fast car" :distress:. Though Stevie's voice does sound great. Almost Insider-esque.

Well, I just heard more the song from that radio show and I really, really like the song. She needs a song like that on her album—a good, heartfealt love song.

I wish Stevie would record her own version of "You Like Me." She wrote it, and the Williams Brothers recorded and released it, along with their version of "Some Become Strangers." It's quite a rockin' song.

"Your eyes I see through...You like me, don't you?"

I know! This totally bums me out, as I can't see how Stevie's version will make it any better, unless she rewrites these God awful lyrics. Why oh WHY did she have to put this song on her album as well?

It means that a potentially great Stevie song might have been kicked off the record in favor of Dave Stewart's "I wrote this song in 5 minutes" ditty.

I love ya, Dave! And I love your album, just not that song...or "Stevie Baby". :(

That Made Me Stronger Part II. Eh... well, maybe not that bad.

Yes, the lyrics are corny, but for some reason I get the feeling that this song was written with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I'm guessing it was supposed to be in the vein of those corny old AM radio country songs, which helps to explain the little slide guitar interlude. I just hope Stevie's version doesn't become too serious.

Viv likes this song very much. I like Stevie's vocal accompanying Dave's. I look forward to hearing the complete version. Thank you for posting this interview.

Meowi 02-02-2011 12:15 AM

Me likey.
I also can't wait to hear the whole version.

Also, it's gonna be interesting to compare the versions.

God I love his story about Don't Come Around Here No More and how he keeps insinuating that they had sex.

"And I was singing it to Jimmy and he was like, 'thats a hit if I ever heard one!' and then he said to Stevie 'Now come on, let's get the verse together!" and I didn't realize that him and her were having a little bit of friction and she was like, reciting Shakespeare and all sorts of crazy stuff instead of singing the verse and Jimmy was getting angrier and angrier and angrier and they have a little bit of argument around the piano and he is going, 'Don't argue infront of my friend David, you don't know him!' and she's going, 'What do you mean I don't know him?' blah blah blah hahaha I won't tell the rest of it. ;)"

I just imagine that last sentence going, "What do you mean I don't know him?! I ****ed him didn't I?!?!?!"

Also... this thing they did together for HBO?!?!?!?! "Me and Stevie met again... 2 or 3 years ago for this little thing we were doing for HBO. And we got on great and I was playing Landslide with her on acoustic and we did a few things... Rhiannon (although it sounds as if he says Rhianna) nobodies ever seen this, but it was filmed!"

Also, "well let's play your version" sounds like there are two different versions of the song. I love her vocal on it, but the lyrics are very cheesy. The one that REALLY kills me is "Whats faster than a FAST car?" Sister Honey is faster than a fast car. Shes like a jet plane, remember?! I think I could appreciate it if it was only on Dave's album.

Yeah, I know. I wonder though about her background singers. He said something about them. Did they all rock Dave's world? I'm sure he had sex with Stevie. I just wonder how coked up she was at the time.

APerfectLie 02-02-2011 01:12 AM

As for the HBO thing... apparently Dave Stewart was the host of a show on HBO called "Off The Record" where he would sit down and interview artists. HBO only aired the pilot episode where he interviewed U2. I guess they decided to cancel the show and the episode with Stevie never aired. Who knows what other artists he interviewed!

Jondalar 02-02-2011 06:54 AM

I listened to this snippet over and over again. Now I know why David Wilde keeps mentioning Tom Petty. This is song is the Insider part 2.

Stevie Baby, I'm ok with - because it's just Dave and he's using her song titles. But, this... it sounds cheap...and free.

Ok, now that you mention it - it does sound like the old cheesy country songs that I love and grew up listening to. But, I never deemed Dave & Stevie to be another Porter & Dolly or Conway & Loretta and God knows they sure aren't George & Tammy. The thing about those novelty songs - they were usually upbeat and you got that it was a joke. This is not. And, it's not funny either. Eh. Reminds me of Lindsey's story of when they were trying to get back on track after BN tanked and the label guys wanted them to do stuff like Jim Stafford's "Spiders and Snakes" (Loretta & Conway) and join the steak house circuit...

Oh well, I'm sure I'll be singing along to this when it comes out regardless.
*clears throat*, snaps fingers..."more exciting than high fashion, high passion!"... It's gonna take some more getting used to.

But, ballyhoo for Dave for scoring Reese's guitar town condo for free though. Nice.

Artemis 02-02-2011 09:24 AM

I think she's finally wrote a song that might be lyrically worse than Silver Girl.

Although, despite the God-Awful lyrics, I find myself really liking it... I can't explain why either.
