"Smile At You" ~ 1999 Info
Hey, I knew I had seen "Smile At You" listed as newly recorded in 1999 before, and now I found it! There it is, right in the middle of other songs that were demoed for Trouble In Shangri-la, and possibly fully-recorded. From the U.S. Copyright Office:
[ 177 ] Fall from grace. PAu002438117 1999 [ 178 ] Annabel Lee. PAu002438116 1999 [ 179 ] Smile at you. PAu002438115 1999 [ 180 ] Planets of the universe. PAu002438114 1999 [ 181 ] Not make believe. PAu002419370 1999 [ 182 ] Thrown down. PAu002419366 1999 [ 183 ] Bombay sapphire. PAu002419365 1999 Details: Type of Work: Music Registration Number / Date: PAu002438115 / 1999-08-31 Title: Smile at you. Description: Sound cassette + lyrics sheet. Copyright Claimant: Welsh Witch Music Date of Creation: 1977 Authorship on Application: words & music: Stevie Nicks. Names: Nicks, Stevie Welsh Witch Music Stevie said she pulled off a few finished songs from TISL in order to give to FM for their new album. And we know that "Thrown Down" was fully-recorded for TISL, not just a demo. So, perhaps full TISL versions of "Smile At You" and "Not Make Believe" are IN THE VAULT. I wonder how much BETTER the TISL version would have been than LB's abortion version on Say You Will (although I like Stevie's vocals on it). Oh, and look: "Bombay Sapphire" doesn't have an "s" at the end. It is about the gin, Stevie! You liar... ;) |

OMFG!!!! "Blue Water" re-submitted in 1997!???!!!!!! Stevie's original submission is in 1978, and the copyright had not lapsed, and here is "Blue Water" in the middle of a bunch of new songs she wrote in the Late 1990s!

And people say Stevie was dismissive and unappreciative of his work. But maybe this was her true opinion she was keeping to herself. |
Submitted the same date as many of these recordings is one called "Two Of Us", written by Stevie & Rick Nowells. So, it's not "Two Kinds Of Love", which was co-written with Rupert Hine.

All great info. But, in the case of Blue Water, it could have been just time to renew the copyright?
PS - Lindsey is an excellent producer... :xoxo: |

Stevie did two new demos for "Planets Of The Universe" in the Late 1990s (as well as "Chanel, Chanel", written only in 1984), so I'm just wondering if she did a new 1996/1997 demo for "Blue Water" and maybe "The Charmed Ones (Song For The City Of Hope)" as well. It was only written 15 years earlier in 1982.

Christopher, I agree about the Klonopin-soaked vocals on "The Mixdown", although I do like how Stevie tries really hard at the break part, where she's belting:
"Well, it's hard enough just to stand out! And it's easy enough just to give it up!" Especially with Stevie overdubbing herself so much on there, one of her going "Give it all up!"!!! :) I think Stevie handled the rockers very well on Street Angel, and "Running Through The Garden" could've really shined there, too! My mind is still reeling, thinking about a 1996/1997 "Blue Water" in there along with "Sweet Girl", "Touched By An Angel" and "Trouble In Shangri-la"... "The Mixdown" (Words by Stevie Nicks; Music by Mike Campbell) Well, I'll beat you in the long run I'll beat you to the mountain I'll beat you at your own game And you'll never be the same I'll be there when I'm not there And I'll be gone when you think that I'm with you Two can play at this game But one can win So go on, throw the dice, then Go on, have a go Well, I remember when it was everything Runnin' 'round in circles "Oh, well, it sounds like she's in a circus" Said the grandmother "Something like that" said the father And I'll be gone when you think I'm there War is war and fair is fair "What's fair anymore?" she says Nothing's fair in love and war Mix down, live it up It's hard enough just to stand out It's easy enough just to give it all up Mix down, live it up Well, it's hard enough just to stand out And it's easy enough just to give it up Well, I'll beat you in the long run I'll beat you to the mountain Then I'll beat you at your own game And I know that you'll never be the same I'll be there when I'm not there I'll be gone when you think that I'm with you Two can play at this game But only one can win Well, go on, throw the dice, then Go on, have a go I remember when it was everything So I'll be gone when you think I'm there War is war, and fair is fair What's fair anymore? Nothing is fair in love and war Mix down, live it up! Well, it's hard enough just to stand out! And it's easy enough just to give it up! Oh, well, I'll beat you in the long run And then I'll beat you to the mountain Well, I'll beat you at your own game And you'll never be the same Oh, baby, I'll be there when I'm not there And I'll be gone when you think that I'm with you Two can play at this game, honey But only one can win Go on, throw the dice, then Go on, have a go... I remember when you never said "No..." |
I like that Stevie might have orignially intended to recapture a bit of the old Rock A Little days with Street Angel - Thousand Days, Love Is Like A River, Greta, I Call You Missing, Mirror Mirror as a B-Side - and now the possibility that Running Through The Garden was considered and *maybe* even recorded for inclusion.
That could have been an amazing album indeed, with the right producer and Stevie in the right frame of mind. |
"Street Angel" could have been the "Rock A Little"-esque weird track on the album, yeah! The sands of time and all that...

So Mike, In your quest to find possible vault songs that Stevie may have included for IYD, as well as uncover all sorts of interesting timelines. Have no newly submitted copyrights shown up in 2010, 2011? with Dave Stewart and other possible collaborators??
Also I haven't seen anyone here point out that "In Your Dreams" could be the 1st Stevie solo album to have Stevie write or co-write every single song on the whole record! That would be HUGE. |
None! The dates end in 2009 as far as being searchable online. Believe me, I've looked! LOL!! "The Ghosts Are Gone", "The Ghost Is Gone", "Italian Summer", all of them ~ nothing Stevie-related on the U.S. Copyright Office's site! :(
The alternate, never-realized timelines are something that fascinate me! I think it goes beyond Stevie saying, "Oh, it's February 1997, and I'm submitting a batch of demos of songs I've written in the last two years. Hmm, let me dig out some OLD 1977 & 1978 cassettes of 'Blue Water' and 'Goodbye Baby' and toss them in the bag, too, while I'm at it! No reason!" I'm joking, but it is something I find FUN to speculate about. No hard science or proof, just fun. |

I would question the date of original copyright (or actual date written) on several of Stevie's songs. For example, Without You (early '70's) submitted on the tape with Goodbye Baby.... I would assume Stevie's lawyers are all about making sure her songs do not become public domain. |
But those songs have separate "Date Of Creation" years, even if on the same tape. Each song has its own creation date, not lumped together. Date of submission may be the same (Feb. 1997), but it lists "Touched By An Angel" as date of creation in 1996 and "Trouble In Shangri-la" as 1995.

Hmm, all the 1997 songs look like songs she was planning on putting on TISL, but then got interrupted with Enchanted. Now that I know she still remembers City of Hope, I can still have hope she will record it some day! :blob2:
