Just picked up Lindsey's Under the Skin album

So I was browsing CD's at my local library and ran across Lindsey's Under the Skin album. In case you don't already know, I've never heard any of Lindsey's solo songs and his Mac songs are my least favorite.

What songs do you recommend I listen to? :)

I wouldn't have started with UTS. Take it back until after you've listened - beginning to end - to GOS and/or OOTC.

I love Cast Away Dreams ( dreams that are cast away - not the dreams of a castaway ). My favorite version though, is on Bass Hall, or the accoustic video version. DOR is fantastic too, but I like it so much better live also. In fact I like all of UTS better live. Great songs, but the production isn't my thing.

TrueFaith77 01-09-2011 03:56 PM

Listen to the whole album. as an album. from beginning to end. what is going on in this world?

Sahara 01-09-2011 04:09 PM

^^ Agreed.

TerraRhiannon 01-09-2011 04:13 PM

I was sent a Lindsey solo mix CD from someone , and it has to be one of the most awesome things my ears have ever heard, I really love it. I'm obsessed with it, actually, it's what I listen to in my car constantly. Need....more...Lindsey. I think I'll order Under The Skin on Amazon or something, sounds like a good album....I really love Castaway Dreams, awesome song,

bluefox4000 01-09-2011 04:54 PM

Yea Listen to the whole album.....more then once. Cause it takes FOREVER to sink in. I remember hating this album's guts. One day it clicked though. My third Favorite Lindsey Album.

Mick

MissLadyLoki 01-09-2011 05:16 PM

I never heard this album, but you should've started with Out of the Cradle. Of course, if you wanted a bit of a shock, you should've started with Go Insane

EDIT: Except I have heard some songs from it on that Bass Performance Hall thing when it was on MSG (it's not just an arena, it's a channel in the New York area that, when Knicks, Rangers, and Islanders aren't playing, they play movies and junk, including Bucky in concert). Now, since we have an entire channel devoted to the Yankees (it's called YES), why can't they play stuff like that when it's the off season?

yeah, don't know why i keep writing castaway, must have seen it on youtube or somewhere... maybe also b/c lindsey seems to like his titles to have two different meanings;)

first thing i listened to when i decided to look into LB's music was bass hall on rhapsody, and it sounded somewhat too dark for a start...so agree about the whole (front-to-back:D) UTS not being the best intro, but since MacShadowsBall already has it in his hands, why not start with more "friendly-sounding" songs.

i like UTS DOR better than the live soundstage version, to me it seems to lose some of its lushness live.

MacShadowsBall 01-09-2011 05:24 PM

Thanks for your replies... :woohoo:

I get off work at 5pm, assuming this snow storm that's gonna hit the South doesn't trap me in.

I checked with the library and this is the only CD of Lindsey's they have. I'm not interested in spending money on his other albums. I'll listen to the "Cast Away Dreams" first then the rest of the songs.

tilthefirefades 01-09-2011 05:27 PM

UTS is my least favorite Lindsey album. Of course, OoTC is unbelievably good, so if you don't care for UTS get it instead.

MissLadyLoki 01-09-2011 05:32 PM

Now that i got that junk about channels you probably never heard of, based on what i've heard live, I found some of the songs kinda boring, but it was generally good IMO, even though I was expecting more Big Love-style playing

Exactly what I was thinking with the more "friendly-sounding" songs and also the ones my fellow Ledgies like the best!

shackin'up 01-09-2011 05:52 PM

If you don't dig it. don't torture yourself. Lindsey is at his most approachable in Fleetwood Mac, If you don't like him there...well....

I figured you did. That was more for MacShadow's benefit :)

Obviously, I still need to learn to multi-quite

True enough. I just would hate for someone to listen UTS and then not try anything else. But yeah, since it's already in MacShadow's possession, it does makes sense to start with the friendly songs
On that note, I always liked Flying Down Juniper a lot. That and SGTCYM are the ones I like best - album version. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority, though, with Flying Down Jupiter  Still, it's got a neat riff IMO, and it's a favorite of mine.

MacShadowsBall 01-09-2011 06:38 PM

Listening to the album right now....

Thoughts so far? I'm curious as UTS was my first LB solo experience (technically the Bass dvd was but he played uts songs there) which opened the door for me. The songs are waaaay better live imo.

Sleepless-Child 01-09-2011 07:24 PM

I'm surprised noone mentioned "Shut us down", cause i'd start with this song.
Anyway, i like this album, but it took me some time to get it, and there are still some songs that i definitely don't like. GOS all the way, that's your best chance to appreciate Lindsey's solo work :).

MacShadowsBall 01-09-2011 08:11 PM

Well I listened to the album. Its okay. I started with Cast Away Dreams and put it on repeat to hear the other songs. The instrumentation is nice, but I don't care for the vocals and all that overdubbing/echo effects. I was kinda expecting a more uptempo rocking sound from Lindsey. Perhaps his other albums are more along those lines?...

Anyway, at least I can say I listened to a Lindsey solo album! :)

Exactly...and why I like them better live

And, yes, his other albums are a lot more along those lines. I wish you'd give OOTC a try. Go Insane is definitely uptempo - and classic Lindsey attitude.

I would agree. It's one thing to wonder what tracks to put on a mix tape, when you know them all and are trying to create an enticing combo for a friend. But when you already have the entire album and all the songs are new to you, you've got a clean slate from which to create your own preferences.

I think it's best to listen to it in the original sequence and then make decisions about where you would have put the different songs, which ones jump out at you, which one are sleepers, which ones are turn offs, etc.

UTS is 45 measly minutes long.

Listen to the whole thing.

Title track is one that definitely deserves a listen. In fact, the album should open with it. I am Waiting, Try For the Sun, Shut Us Down, Down on Rodeo and Someone's Gotta Change Your Mind are all MUST listens. My favorite on the album is the closer and rightfully so... Flying Down Juniper. Great stuff!

McTrouble 01-10-2011 07:08 AM

I've got all Fleetwood Mac CDs that feature Bucky (don't like FM without him) and I've got all his solo CDs.

Out of all the above, whether it be FM or solo, UTS is my least favourite - I was so glad he redeemed himself (in my opinion) so quickly with GOS. Absolutely adore OOTC, GI and L&O.

RickRobert 01-10-2011 07:13 AM

Down on Rodeo is the best solo Lindsey song ever! :blob2::blob2::blob2:

Quite harsh on Under The Skin, there! I don't believe that Lindsey has ever released a bad "album". Maybe he's tried different approaches and they havn't gelled as well as he thought, or the songs were so similar in vibe that they melded together to form a sickening mass, yet alone they stand up amongst the bed (See R.E.M.s Reveal). With UtS I believe he was trying to get back to the raw, naked sound of the guitar and "street performer" sound he has been known to advocate, yet in a time when we've grown used to his ethereal and overly produced sound it didn't quite live up to our expectations. Most artists get pidgeon holed into a sound, and when they try and break away from it it doesn't quite catch on as much. For example, Bob Dylan's Saved Album. We were used to his nasally, dive bar drunk persona. But then he comes out of seemingly nowhere (His shifts in religion are legendary, but necassarily covered in his earlier works) with this "look at me! I'm a Christian and I'm going to shove it down your throat" narration of his faith. I was actually warned off buying this album when I went to my local independent record store a while ago by an avid Dylan fan, who told me I had to be exceptionally brave to listen to it. I bought it anyway, and I can see where he was coming from. Instead of listening to a Dylan album, I felt as though I was listening to a stereotypical performance of an American Church scene (or should I say Choich?).

Not necassarily. It's a great song and way up there but not the number one best song. That spot's still taken by D.W.Suite :p

RickRobert 01-10-2011 07:24 AM

D.W. Suite? I love the first moment but the next two are horrific imo. I want to go... go... forEvah!

Hey wait, Murrow and Red Rover are technically solo Lindsey tunes!

Not harsh really - just said it was my least favourite, I still know it off by heart, back to front, inside out, blah blah blah....

However, I do have to say that I hate "It Was You" - that probably comes from the Bass Performance DVD as when he performs that track it makes me cringe and I think it is so "fingers down the back of your throat"!!! Love the rest of the gig though.

I usually like all Bucky's documentaries but, again, the docu on the Bass Performance DVD is so sickly - not very rock 'n roll at all!

It's not that I don't like sloppy stuff either, I LOVE "Did You Miss Me" and "Say Goodbye" and mush like that.

Anyhow, can't wait for the forthcoming CD!

i thought he could have done well without most of that doc on DVD too, and just have the concert recording. to me it looks like he had nobody to give him impartial opinion on that doc before releasing it.

TrueFaith77 01-10-2011 09:26 AM

Glad to see some Flying Down Juniper love here!

Lindsey's greatest solo song: HOLIDAY ROAD

Nico 01-10-2011 01:22 PM

To the original poster: I know you mentioned you wouldn't spend money on any LB solo albums, but it is my personal opinion that one must hear Out Of the Cradle for more than a few reasons. Firstly, it is a JOY to listen to. Secondly, it's brilliant. And thirdly, it's the best solo album by any FM member. Ok, these may be my opinions but quite honestly it's a gem. UTS is a great album in a lot of ways, but the double tracked vocals are tough to get used to. As a whole, OOTC just flows. It's sublime and he sounds incredible on each song. I recommend you at least give it a try. A ton of people are huge Gift of Screws stans but it will probably always be OOTC for me. :)

MacShadowsBall 01-10-2011 02:12 PM

I appreciate everyones opinion, but this album just didn't click with me. It was just something I happened to run across at my local library. By the way, they have the '88 FM Greatest Hits and Stevie's Street Angel album. Kinda odd albums to have...

Ofcourse not. Just don't buy any more of them. Lindsey's solomusic rarely "clicks" after a few listens. It's a waste of money if you don't want to get into his art. No prob, there's a world of music that'll fit you better.

Too bad, to each his/her own. It's a matter of personal taste. Take me for example, I think Fleetwood Mac is absolutely phenomenal and I can say the same for Lindsey Buckingham's solo work. But I wouldn't spend a cent to buy a Stevie Nicks solo album.

bluefox4000 01-10-2011 05:55 PM

OOTC is my happy album. It's better then anything the other members of the Mac could have dreamed of making.
