Dave Stewart in a Stevie Mood today

Dave Stewart has been tweeting about Stevie often lately. Today he tweeted this little nugget that links their pasts...

"Go ahead, lily Hit it That is how songs are written Stories are told, rumours are started Lily was here http://snipurl.com/1rpuhe"

And also this...

"It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of ANNABEL LEE"

I know a lot of you are not so thrilled with the whole Annabel Lee thing but I have to say I'm thrilled. I've loved this demo since I first heard it and can't wait to hear it. Obviously Dave is quite excited about it as well.

Well maybe he is in an Edgar Allen Poe mood today.

I still hate the "Annabel Lee" demo as much as ever, but I am hopeful that perhaps it was due to the horrible keyboard-y arrangement. I am intrigued by the harpsichord solo mentioned in one of her recent interviews.

IDK, It seems the love for Annabel Lee is @ 50/50 around here, and that's based on the simple, no frills TISL demo. I personally LOVE the song and always saw huge potential with it. I simply cannot get enough of the refrain at the end of the demo where she keeps repeating "ooh I lie down by the side...of my wife, my bride...I lie down..by the side.." I hope they kept this ending in the song. It's exquisite.:xoxo:

Perhaps Dave's subtle way of letting the Twitter world know that an album title has been chosen? :-)

Doubtful, probably...but "Annabel Lee" as an album title...thoughts?

Nah, very doubtful. Stevie Nicks-Annabel Lee. That's just confusing. Could be they were just filming in a kingdom by the sea~

I think the melody is classic, like an old-timey ballad or waltz. If it were produced like a Gillian Welch tune, or like the Nick Cave song "Where the Wild Roses Grow" (dark) I would be really pleased.
That is just my taste, though. I think the sepia-toned core of the song is washed out by air-brushed guitar and keyboards.

Maybe "Annabell Lee" will be the first single?

I think I had only seen the negative posts about it. I'm so happy to see someone else shares my affection for this. Of course, I love that version of Castaway from the Uncirculated Rumors boot that sounds like it's from a cassette that's been left in a washing machine and then dragged behind a car for a few miles. So what do I know. LOL! But yeah, that ending of Annabel Lee is beautiful. And I love the little chord progression the guitar plays. I hope that's still in there. I can totally hear them doing it up with strings and harpsichord and all that, but I hope that little chord progression is still there. And the way she sings "My life, my life and my bride... I lie down", that's my favorite part. Oooh, gives me chills.

louielouie2000 01-04-2011 04:26 PM

I don't know about everyone else, but what thrills me is Dave keeps referencing Rock A Little in his tweets! :D

so my assignment tonight is to find my Annabel Lee demo and listen to it. It's never done much for me but perhaps I need to give the ol girl another chance.

baboles 01-04-2011 04:44 PM

I'm currently listening to "Annabel Lee" and it's an alright tune. I'm not very familiar with this demo. When was it recorded?

Really? It almost sounded like the good old klonopin days. Yikes! It's not too bad though.

But I'm happy about the RAL reference, 'Lily' is my favorite Stevie heroine.

Hells Yeah! Let's hope we get a little Lily in this new CD...

There's a rock remix out there, I think it was done by a fan, where the drums and base are more pronounced. I think the drums were recorded by the fan and added to the mix. Gives the demo a nice kick.

jannieC 01-04-2011 08:28 PM

I'm sure I'm the only Ledgie who has never heard the demo. But then, there are a lot of demos I haven't heard.

I can't remember if I have or not. Is that better or worse?

never heard it but did listen to the other demo. It's actually not as bad as I remembered it. Got some potential. Will be interesting to hear what Dave does with it.

About the same. Or maybe a little better because you MAY have heard it.

Or how about "Summer Days" or "Somebody Wants to Love You"?

I wonder whether Stevie means a genuine harpsichord or a digitally simulated harpsichord or a clavinet or something else?

It is Stevie Nicks... for all we know it could really be a xylophone.

Phil 01-05-2011 04:30 AM

Wasn't there harpsichord on "Two Kinds Of Love"? Not that it's a rock song as such, I was just trying to remember which Stevie songs featured it - any others?

The harpsichord is actually one of my favorite instruments... I'd be beyond thrilled if Stevie were to utilize one on her new album. And it doesn't have to be cheesy/Partridge Family harpsichord, either. When implemented properly, the harpsichord can be very moody/mystical/atmospheric. Though I'm not even a fan of hers, Tori Amos is a great example of someone who uses harpsichord in pop/rock in a very neat way.

I can't believe I've never picked out that was a harpsichord! I guess I'd always assumed it was a synthesizer. But you're right, that's sure enough a harpsichord... buried under soupy, cloudy production. :D

Oh, Christopher, that's exactly how I feel about that ending! I love Stevie's voice, the way she sings it, the feelings it brings about in me... I Can't get enough either! (Thank you, Stevie & B.B.!)

This is how I feel about the Dobro - maybe Stevie could use one of those? I'd LOVE that! I've always thought that The Highywayman done live with Dobro accompaniment would be beautiful.

I just LOVE the fact that Stevie's singing a love song about another woman! :p
