What Got You Into "The Mac" First
So, which was it that got you into "The Mac" fandom?
For me, it was Say You Will, Fleetwood Mac! |
I became enamored with the band's albums & shows first, & then I got into this & that solo performer.
|
Rather strangely, I was into Stevie before I got into the Mac. I call it strange, however, because I'm now heavily ingrained into the Lindsey camp outside of the Mac themselves. I guess Lindsey just did more to grasp my attention.
|
It was hearing Gold Dust Woman and The Chain back to back on the radio in the car on February '93 that hooked me! That evening my Mom gave "loaned" me Rumours and Bella Donna, but it took me some time to get into Bella Donna. At the time, Bella Donna sounded very dated to me. I thought Rumours was perfection from first listen, though. So yeah... Fleetwood Mac hooked me, then the solo members trickled down from there. It was probably '00 or '01 until I started buying Lindsey's solo albums, and that totally changed my musical landscape. His albums encouraged me to listen to experimental and Indie artists, and for that I'm so grateful .
|
The song Rhiannon, followed by the rest of Stevie's Rumours songs, and then realising "Oh! This is the band that does that Don't Stop song, and that Lies one. OH EM GEE. THEY DID EVERYWHERE? MUST CONSUME!"
I was aware of Christine's songs before I knew what the Mac was, but it was, and still is, Stevie's voice and persona that attracted me so heavily to the group. I love Christine and Lindsey's songs too, but, Stevie will always be #1 for me. |
My older cousin moved in with us, when I was in 8th grade. She had Tumours. And I was never the same. Seriously. I became so obsessed with Tumours, and FM. I spent hours upon hours, lying on my bed, playing trumpet lines along with it.
It's the REASON I learned to play guitar, and then keyboards. It's quite literally the reason I'm a musician, and the reason I AM, who I am. I've often told her, that her moving in, with her music, changed my path in life. |
Hearing Christine sing Everywhere is what got me. I hated Lindsey and didn't care for Stevie either because I could never understand what she was saying. Then I bought Say You Will and Trouble in Shangri-La, and it's been Stevie ever since.

It was the blonde chick with mudflaps in her hair singing with Tom Petty in that video.

Hearing Dreams on the radio in 77, i remember thinking who is that chick?? her voice is so cool, i didnt catch the name of the band when Dreams had finished playing, so i sat & waited till the station played it again, the following day i purchased my first record which was Rumours. I rushed home listened to it back to front, i sat looking at the photos & lyrics, trying to put faces to names, at first thinking Stevie was the guy & Lindsey was the cute chick with the coolest hair ever!! I was totally obsessed with GDW & Dreams..
|
I was already a fan of Lindsey (in 1984), then Stevie (1985). It wasn't until Tango In the Night (when I was almost 13) that I knew they were both in the same band! So, I really enjoyed 'Big Love'. I got the Tango cassette and absolutely loved the album! Then I got other FM cassettes and other LB/SN/CM solo albums and realized I had already heard and liked plenty of the songs. I just hadn't known who was singing them. I've been a fan ever since!!
|
my aunt debi had a copy of buckingham nicks~ i adored it, played the snot out of it~ then soon after the white album came out~ so i'd say stevie & lindsey brought me to love the mac so very much~
|
I probably heard Mac songs before I was aware of what I was hearing, but around 07 or 08, when I was trying to drift away from rap (I still don't believe I used to enjoy it and the other day, I found a Lil' Wayne song I forgot to delete off my MP3 player all those years ago). I heard Go Your Own Way, loved it, and I've been a fan and a rocker since
|
I voted for FM but it was a Lindsey song (or two) that got me into the Mac...It was 97' and someone let me borrow The Dance CD. I listened to Bleed to Love Her repeatedly. I thought - who is this man singing about? Bleed to love her? How does he understand all these things about women? Men actually think like that and write songs about it! I want someone to want to bleed to love me!!! Another day soon after that I was in a grocery store and I heard "been down two times...mmmm mmmm never going back again" and I didn't know who was singing it or what it was and it took me a couple days to figure it out. The next thing that sparked my interest was hearing "lay me down in the tall grass and let me do my stuff." I thought, What did he just say? Let me do my stuff?
That's when I started to be interested in the band personally. The ship took off. Shipper shipper shipper. I messed around with Stevie for a few years but it wasn't until 2002 that we fell in love. That's a whole nother story. Maybe she will tell you about it sometime. ;) That's my story and I'm sticking to it. |
I knew who the Mac was cause my Uncle had Tusk and Rumours LP'S and I had listened to them. However they never clicked with me. I thought this stuff is OK but I'm not wild for it. Then When I was 12...I caught the Dance on VH1. When I'm so Afraid hit......I was hooked. From there I just started digging up as much as I could.. I absorbed The Rumours era. Then went deeper to the Bob Welsh era. Who, by the way I'm beginning to love more every second. Then I went to Greeny's Era. That's the only era that sparks nothing in me. I know the Green god, black magic Woman, Oh Well........yea not my thing. So yea I worked backwards. That's my story.

My favorite era. Mystery To Me, is THE greatest FM album. Having Bob rejoin the band, would make perfekt sense(after losing Christine), but apparently the band doesn't think so.... Can you imagine having Bob on 2nd guitar, even if he only did 4-5 songs during the show? The different flavor that that would give us? Oh yeah, but they're still milking Tumours. |
I know I just hit a wrong letter.....too lazy to correct it:wavey:
Funny Mystery To Me....is ok. There's 3 tracks on that I skip. I enjoy the follow up more. My fav album from that era is Bare Trees:thumbsup: I would LOVE Bob back as well. At this point it would get me interested again. As frankly I'm tired of the way the Mac is now. Either that or call it quits....seriously. |
Seeing The Dance on VH1 at my cousin's house summer of '97.

I always mix up Bare Trees and Future Games...only because they both fit on one disc, and I've had them like that for 10 years. I love Woman of 1000 Years. |
I have only heard Mystery to Me not that long ago and I loved it. Bob Welch rules, and Chrissy Mac has plenty of awesomeness from that era too. Now, I need to go and yell at my friend to send me those MP3s of Emerald Eyes and Just Crazy Love, my 2 fave songs from the album I can actually remember the names to (it was on a burned CD that just has track 1, track 2, etc. when put into a computer to rip and just came in a sleeve from another friend)
Now, I got 2 questions: 1.Should I listen to Bare Trees of Heroes are Hard to Find next? 2.Has anyone ver heard this story before: when Lindsey left the band in 1987, Bob almost replaced him, but something fell through in the end EDIT: And I just realized now I just broke 2k posts. Either that's awesome or downright pathetic  |
Well my answer to your question...Go for Bare Trees. I just love the whole mood of that album. Plus it has The Ghost. Hero's is brilliant too. you can't go wrong with either one really.
As for that story,,,,never heard it. If it's true that would have been so awesome. Mick |

Those were my exact thoughts too when I first heard that story. Same goes when I first heard about Dave Mason being a member when he spoke on the radio. I thought it would've been awesome, but after he said Time was the worst album he ever made (and mind you, he's been around since the 60's), I decided i wasn't exactly gonna rush into listening to it EDIT: I'm pretty sure I heard it on 102.3 WBAB (you live on LI and like rock, you're gonna know that station), but i still can't get over how, from being in the US for so many years, he lost his accent and now sounds like he's from Brooklyn  |
Yea.....Time.....I still have not recovered. But I Digress:laugh:

This topic...again?
Ok..this time only the short version. You want the long version, check the old threads. 1) Age 10, fan of Eric Clapton's in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, bass player is John McVie. 2) Clapton leaves Bluesbreakers to co-found Cream, replaced by some guy named Peter Green 3) Hear "The Supernatural" & "The Stumble", become fan of Peter Green 4) Peter Green leaves Bluesbreakers to form own band...names it Fleetwood Mac. 5) Hear "Black Magic Woman", become fan of Fleetwood Mac...find out that John McVie also in band. 6) Couple of years later hear "Oh Well"..."fan" status upgraded to "fanatic". 7) the rest is history. |

The short version...
The song that made me order Fleetwood Mac Live was Sarah. For some reason I didn't receive that album. Fast forward to the Wild Heart era. Just happened to be RCA's Record Club selection of the month, and after seeing Stevie on Friday Night Videos and ABC's late night video show (name?) I had to have it. The rest is history. A split vote between the Mac and Stevie. ( I voted Mac) |

But mostly The Dance as a whole. I grew up with that album, my first favorite Mac songs were Everywhere, The Chain & Rhiannon. In Elementary School we had to bring a favorite cassette or CD of ours in, kinda like a Show & Tell, and I brought The Dance while everyone else brought Spice Girls, or anything along those lines. (I think maybe the Backstreet Boys & Hanson) ...& no one really identified with me. I can't remember what my teachers thought, but they were probably amazed that I was into such awesome quality music :D |

so not mac but also not lindsey solo. lindsey in mac (guess that's other). |
It is hard for me to say exactly which one got me into FM. My mom was a huge Mac and Stevie fan, so I pretty much loved them my entire life. In fact, the first music video I remember seeing was "Stop Draggin My Heart Around". However, the point that turned me from loving their music, to becoming obsessed with it was The Dance. My mom recorded it and watched it every day for about a month in late 1997 and I loved it so much I made her buy me the cassette, which I listened to non-stop. I was in third grade and I remember telling this girl that my favorite singer was Stevie Nicks and she didn't believe me that Stevie was a woman, so I took my cassette case to school to show her a pic of Stevie. I then lost the cassette and asked my grandmother to buy me another one, and she bought it for me on CD. I even wrote Stevie a letter that year in which I got a very generic reply that was on a blue post card that said, "Has anyone ever written anything for me? Well you have. blah blah blah". Even tho it was so generic and Stevie probably never even touched it, it made my day that I got one back! And then my sister spilt coke all over it a few months later. I still have it somewhere in Austin, and now I think I will dig it out when I get home. Okay, end of ramble.

Edge of Seventeen got me into Fleetwood Mac.
I knew some of their work before hand, both Stevie and Fleetwood - but it was after watching School of Rock as a little 13 year old that got me caught. Then were driving somewhere and Mum put on Rumours. End of story. |

My mum  She gave me a CD copy of TITN and I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread and proceeded to take her copy of Bare Trees.
