Stevie Nicks ~ Dreams & Chains: The Anthology
I have also spent my time the last few weeks trying to come up with a 6-CD that covers Stevie's complete career. All major artists that have been part of groups, like Sting, Tina Turner, Diana Ross and others, have compilations that combine their solo and group work. Get over it. A Stevie song is a Stevie song, no matter her back-up musicians. This compilation is designed to highlight the entire recording career (so far!) of the one and only Stevie Nicks!
I need to check all of these out on my iTunes to see if they fit on CDs for sure, but I'm at work and wanted to post it anyway. I mixed Stevie's entire career, and only used outtakes and demos that are of perfect sound quality, mostly from The Masters. I will probably edit the running order later if I have to subtract/add songs (I'm sure "Cathouse Blues" can fit on somewhere!), but I think these are some pretty awesome running orders! I hate singles separated from rarities, so everything is sequenced together. Here we go! Disc 1 1. If You Ever Did Believe - Practical Magic soundtrack 2. Wow! You've really put a lot of work into making this! A very extensive collection indeed and I absolutely love it!
Are we all getting copies for Christmas? lol |
And I adore the title of this collection!
|
Great job Mike. I'd love a copy too!! I love it that you have 'Call On Me For Magic'. I've always wanted that song after I'd heard it. Thanks for all your hard work!!
|
Thanks! I've been saving that title for years! LOL! I almost put on the piano demo of "I Sing For The Things" from The Masters, but I just love Stevie's Rock A Little voice, so I used the album version.
I put 3 songs on there twice in different forms ("Rhiannon", "Stand Back" and "Sisters Of The Moon") since they are 3 of her most influential amongst fans. When I go back and edit, the album version of "Dreams" may make it on there as well. Both the "24 Karat" and "Lady From The Mountains" versions I posted in the "Demos/Live Songs/Requests" thread in April. Again, I've always wanted to start off a CD with that particular "24 Karat", where Stevie is talking and being wonderfully cynical about fame and fortune. The 1981 live version of "Gold And Braid" from Enchanted is on here, not one of the many studio versions ~ why? It's the best version: vocals, rocking band, Waddy's guitar solo (nowhere on any of the studio outtakes)... This is the version most of us fell in love with on the HBO concert in 1982, entranced by this incredible song we'd never heard before! This version is perfection, especially with Chris Lord-Alge's remixing. Same with the album version of "Fireflies" over the chopped-up single versions: it's the best one with the most Stevie! I did use the single versions of "Say You Will" and "Sorcerer" because both went so well in the play lists. I picked "Love's A Hard Game To Play" over "Sometimes It's A Bitch" because it flows better, although I personally prefer "Bitch". Plus, Stevie performed it live twice, so she must've liked it better as well. And the CL-A single remix is too amazing! It would have been nice to use the outtake version of "Violet And Blue" for a difference, but the sound quality is not there. Same for "The Maker Of Birds", even though I MUCH prefer it over "Forest Of The Black Roses" (I think I'm in the minority, though). If a truly flawless sound copy of "She Still Loves Him" ever surfaces, nothing will keep it off the collection! This anthology is meant to have CD-perfect sound (I've made dozens others with less-than-perfect sound, too). I really did rein myself in with the outtakes and demos. Of course, I could have put a different version of "Julia" on every CD and been happy, but that's not the purpose of the collection. A few songs I'm still wishing I had room for: "That's Alright" (very different outtake from Mirage), "The Highwayman", "Imperial Hotel", "Cathouse Blues", "Castaway", "I Pretend" and a few others. We'll see! |

I enjoy playing with Stevie compilations, and I love reading other fans' own lists as well! There are very few comprehensive compilations that I've seen, so I tried really hard to make up fun running orders.
I will admit to being torn about not adding in either "Circle Dance" or "Rock And Roll" (both from The Soundstage concert). Stevie really seemed to love both songs in concert from 2005-2008, so it was something I considered. But I decided to use "How Still My Love" from Soundstage instead, to utilize that era, plus "Stand Back" from 2005. Mostly, I wanted as many Stevie-written songs as possible. But "Circle Dance" certainly was a significant song for Stevie in 2005... >sigh< Still torn! |

Well, I've been fiddling with the playlists today (at work!), mainly to include my favourite outtake of "How Still My Love" (this involves some in-disc-movement). So, the Soundstage "How Still My Love" is out, and I think "Circle Dance" would fit in wonderfully between "Gypsy" and "Running Through The Garden".
Disc 2 1. Listen To The Rain - Street Angel 2. Rock A Little - Extended version from UK "I Can't Wait" 12-inch single (from Rock A Little) 3. Long Distance Winner - Buckingham Nicks (1998 remaster from Enchanted) 4. Real Tears - B-side to UK "Long Way To Go" CD-single (outtake from The Other Side Of The Mirror) 5. Planets Of The Universe - Extended album version from CD-single (from Trouble In Shangri-la) 6. Storms - Unreleased alternate extended mix from Tusk 7. Talk To Me - Rock A Little (1991 TimeSpace remaster) 8. How Still My Love - Unreleased outtake from Bella Donna 9. Rhiannon - 1975 live version from Nod Trossel studios 10. All The Beautiful Worlds - Unreleased outtake from The Wild Heart 11. No Questions Asked - Fleetwood Mac: Greatest Hits 1988 (2002 remaster from The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac) 12. Inspiration - B-side of "Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind" (outtake from Street Angel) 13. Gypsy - Extended album version from The Chain (from Mirage) 14. Circle Dance - 2007 live version from The Soundstage Sessions 15. Running Through The Garden - Say You Will 16. Julia - Unreleased outtake from Bella Donna 17. Seven Wonders - Tango In The Night 18. Love Is - Unreleased demo (from Trouble In Shangri-la sessions) Of course, this leaves "Kind Of Woman" temporarily homeless, but I'll find a place for her. This "How Still My Love" I also posted in April in the "Demos/Live/Requests" thread, my absolute favourite, WILD outtake!!! But now 2007 is represented with "Circle Dance", which I wanted to do. OR... I may put the outtake of "How Still My Love" after "Gypsy" instead of the live version and leave "Kind Of Woman" where it is and find a different Stevie-written 2007 live version to represent that era on another disc. |

Listen to this performance from LA that year...this would fit nicely in your compilation. :D July 26, 2005 Gibson Amphitheatre - Hollywood, CA http://www.mediafire.com/?yblzpiog184tm70 |
Thanks for the link and info! I will download when I get home! :)

Ooh, I was just listening to the following on Disc 3, flowing so awesomely together:
"Juliet" "One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star" "Not Make Believe" "Crystal" I'm still tweaking the playlists! I'm thinking the demo of "Annabel Lee" should fit on somewhere, prepping for the new album!!!! |

as far as sequence and flowing, doesn't really matter much to me. i can pull up all my Stevie on itunes and just let it go radomly. it all sounds good together to me. And...you must have a really good copy of '24 Karat' cause both demos i have are just awful! |

Marty, "Call On Me For Magic" was recorded in 2000, not really from the Trouble In Shangri-la session, but kinda. It was written by the guy who wrote "Every Day" and Stevie recorded it for him, with a potential home for the song being on a soundtrack. I'm sure it's in the "Demos/Live/Requests" thread for downloading.
Mike, I posted that "24 Karat" in the "Demos/Live/Requests" thread back in April. A couple, actually. I have 7 completely different versions all of excellent quality, all from the Masters. |
Actually Mike, I think your confusing John Shanks and David Kahne. "Call On Me For Magic" is an outtake recorded during the TISL sessions, composed and produced by David Kahne, who also produced and arranged "Love Changes" with Stevie. Rumor has it that it was never intended for inclusion on TISL, but recorded for a possible animated movie or soundtrack that David had been kicking around at the time, and he wanted Stevie to sing it. Unfortunately the song never materialized until fans found it buried on David's website @ Feb. 2009 when it 1st surfaced to most Stevie fans.
It's really a beautiful vocal and different direction for Stevie - the only song that even comes close to the style and production in Stevie's repertoire is "Beauty & The Beast", but less dark. This song kinda of reminds me of a Mary Poppins or Disney tune>>> Check it out at this youtube link; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_04lkcCpPA I haven't been able to live without this song ever since I heard it. Stevie knocks the vocal out of the park. It's superb! And It should be included in any Anthology of Stevie, just to show her range of versatility, along with the Stormy Weather live version of "At Last". |
Thank you, Christopher. I knew as I typed it I was getting the details mixed up. What you wrote is exactly what I heard about the song. Sorry for the SapphireSister moment (just kidding, Lindsay!) ;)

Call On Me For Magic has never really done anything for me. possibly because Stevie didnt write it (but i like other songs she has recorded but didnt write) or maybe its just so far from her usual style?
What is it that fans see it this? Help me fall in love with it...its probably the only Stevie song i will hit the skip button on. I mean ...if i can find joy in Stevie covering "I Still Miss Someone" or even "Jane"(which i know both get a lot of hate) maybe im missing something? |
^^
No worry, We have each others back. Btw Mike, I love this Anthology you put together as well. My 1st though when I saw it the other day was "WOW"! I was a little overwhelmed by it all, but it really almost has everything you'd ever want in a complete representation of Stevie's work. I know we all have our favorites, but you seem to crystallize the ones us diehards love the most. But It's gotta contain She Loves Him Still & That's Alright in there somwhere;) |

This is an amazing collection. |

All the versions of "24 Karat" on the Masters are just amazing. My favourite, the one I put on the anthology, is where Stevie is speaking at the beginning, her voice all dripping with cynicism:
"Ladies and gentlemen, From the studio on the water... Palm trees in Santa Monica... Condominiums for a mere $800,000... Any one of you could afford them..." |

Christopher, be happy that "That's Alright" did squeeze on there this morning as I actually worked on the lengths and all that this morning. It's a lot of work! Darn that Stevie and her amazing music! "I would suffer for the love..." Me forgetting "That's Alright" was an oversight and it was always meant to be on there. I was thinking about an outtake, but I went with the 1982 album version simply because of Stevie's beautiful voice!
"She Still Loves Him" ~ Of course, the song is the most heartbreaking, REAL song Stevie's ever written AND sang. I love JeffD's enhancing of the version I found several months ago. I just listened to it again this morning, and I think it can work. I just didn't want to go to far over the edge with sound quality, or else I'd be putting on the Rock A Little version of "Thousand Days" instead of the Street Angel one. I've made plenty of comps with lesser quality, and my goal for this one was the best sound quality. Thank Rhiannon for the Masters! I think my fave, "Greta" will be falling off >sigh< :( I mean, I just love it, but "Kick It" was actually written in the Street Angel era, so it's more representative of that time. Plus, I think "Kick It" is remembered well and loved by many fans, too. I dunno. I'll be playing with it all weekend and have a final track listing that will fit on 6 CDs if anyone would like to make their own. |

So, I'll re-upload. Expect it by Saturday. Sorry for the slow connection. |

im curious...what versions of Outside the Rain and Dreams did u use from the Street Angel tour? I love the sound quality of the Welcome to My World (house of blues) show, but i've always hated how they are faded in and out on that cd. If you used other verions, can u post them?
|
Stevie's live duet of "Needles and Pins" with Tom Petty and Heartbreakers is a stand-out performance that is often overlooked. It was released as a single, and should have been on the Enchanted box set.

"Storms" - Both this and "Beautiful Child" are not the mixes from The Chain, but longer unreleased mixes from the Masters. Both have lots of EXTRA overdubs by Stevie!!!! I will try to post things this weekend. "24 Karat" would not upload to mediafire last night ~ 3 tries!!! Arghh!!!! :) |

maybe someone else has the '24 Karat' masters to post??? |
Mike, i found a '24 Karat' posted by KarmaContestant in the Master Reels thread ...here:
http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showth...Masters&page=4 but i didnt hear the "Ladies and gentlemen, From the studio on the water... intro on this one. Also there was one posted by you, from April...but the link didnt work. This must be the post you were referring to. |
Mike, when you finalize the track listing for these, would you consider posting them in their entirety on mediafire or something?
They look amazing! |
