DISCUSSION: Stevie's songs from Tango in the Night

Here's the last discussion thread on Tango in the Night.

Songs up for discussion...
1. Seven Wonders
2. Welcome to the Room...Sara
3. When I See You Again

I realize these songs get a bad rep, but I like them all pretty well, especially "Seven Wonders".

Lord give me strength...the beginning of the Klonopin years!

Seven Wonders - Easily the best of the three, but certainly not of the same quality as Lindsey's and Christine's songs.

Welcome to the Room...Sara - "Where the first cut is the deepest one of all. And, the second one. Well it's a worthless thing, so take it all the way back home." There is really no need for commentary.

When I see you Again - I like to pretend this never happened. That vocal!

Overall, this is such a sad time in Stevie's life and I really find these songs depressing. Such a loss of creativity. :(

Nikolaj 11-09-2010 07:34 PM

I'm very fond of 'Seven Wonders' though I think of her vocal on it as her loveable homage to Drano, which I can't explain concisely. I've sworn off mega long Ledge writing, it's just so '2000'.
I appreciate her other two songs enough, they 'vibe' me as beachy or ocean/ island songs; somehow, as do 'Everywhere' 'Big Love' and 'You And I'- even 'Caroline' and 'Tango' have an island-y feel to them. I spun the TITN cd today, and the musical setting throughout the cd does seem quite atmospheric, which I never 'got' before. I think I understand the cd more, now :)

aleuzzi 11-09-2010 07:37 PM

Poor Stevie. Her Tango songs just don't work for me on any level. Seven Wonders has a poppy vibrancy, and a very Fleetwood Mac-ish chorus, but clearly the she (or the band) had to turn to Sandy Stewart for help.

I still can't figure out why the band didn't try Smile At You or Planets at this point. Either one would have sounded very cool on that album.

chiliD 11-09-2010 07:54 PM

On the heels of Rock A Little and how I both loved (side 2) and hated (side 1) of that album, I was hoping for more of the "side 2" Stevie Nicks, but what we got was even worse than the "side 1" Nicks.

MissLadyLoki 11-09-2010 08:06 PM

Ugh. If Tusk was Nicksy at her best, then TITN was probably her at her worst.

1. Seven Wonders- I actually kinda like this song, but I was surprised when I found out Stevie didn't write this. At least everyone looked hot in the music vid :blob2:
2. Welcome to the Room...Sara- Gah! The vocals make me wanna climb up the walls on this one! Why did she have to pull a Rex Harrison (talk-sing your vocals on a song, like what Rex Harrison did in My Fair Lady) on this one, I dunno
3. When I See You Again- Uh, yeah, I'd take a drill to my ear than this one

TerraRhiannon 11-09-2010 08:35 PM

1. Seven Wonders - I agree all the way with Cassie, they all look banging in the video. It's my favorite FMac video :) Chris & Stevie were really pretty, and Lindsey, well lets not go there...sexyyy. Great song!

2. Welcome to the Room... Sara - Win. I actually really enjoy this song even if the lyrics are a tad bit off to me. I enjoy it....

3. When I See You Again - *Deletes from iPod a day after I bought Tango*:sorry: 'What's the matter baby?' Your song sucks.

Yeah, I think she missed the boat with When I See You Again. Wait for me Cassie, we'll have an ear drilling party together. The only song I hate worse than this song is You and I Part 2.

GypsySorcerer 11-09-2010 08:41 PM

Seven Wonders - The best of three very weak songs, but her vocal grates on my nerves.

WTTR....S - Just a rambling mess. "Of course it was a prooobleeem." On the rare occasion I listen to this song, that line makes me jump for the skip button.

WISYA - Possibly the worst song she's ever written. Even Lindsey at the end can't save it.

EnchantedKiwi 11-09-2010 08:42 PM

HAS EVERYONE GONE INSANE! When i see you again is amazing!! Its so sad and beautiful and lindsey's part at the end is so fitting and fantastic! So what that she's a little bit more nasal than usual in this song!

Seven Wonders: Meh, I would still love to hear her perform it live!

Welcome to the room: hmmm, its ok, bit of a strange one, still like it though :woohoo:

I think I might hate When I see You Again more than You and I Part 2. At least the lyrics kinda creepily hint at Lindsey's leaving the band, but WISYA does make me wanna kill myself! Gah!

EDIT: As for our ear-drilling party, it's a date! If we play OSOTM too, we can bring David along too

tilthefirefades 11-09-2010 09:18 PM

I actually like all of these songs. I've even come to enjoy When I See You Again. However, in comparison to Lindsey and Christine's mind blowing contributions, they completely suck.

It's my favorite Fleetwood Mac video too. The only thing better
was the beach scene in Big Love.

Welcome To The Room Sara was ok, but When I See You Again
kind of makes me nauseous.

louielouie2000 11-09-2010 09:39 PM

These are easily the weakest Stevie contributions to any album (solo or Mac).

Seven Wonders: This song is bubbly and fun. But it still bothers me it's not a song Stevie wrote. Even though this is her best addition to Tango, it's still a fairly weak track

Welcome To The Room, Sara: The subject matter of this song is quite intriguing... basically that Stevie's management team forcibly committed her to rehab. Sonically it's just not a strong song, though.

When I See You Again: Possibly the most painful to listen to song Stevie's ever penned. I do respect the underlying sentiment of it greatly, though. It's about total desperation and despair, and to me, Stevie's vocal utterly captures that. Lindsey's vocals on this song are what prevents me from skipping it altogether, though.

Easily Stevie's low point.

Seven Wonders - Stevie's vocal is like the dynamite in a bottle. Oh, and the song is great too. By this time I really didn't mind it not being written by her if the song was good. People seem to overlook and make no mention of the fact that Christine's best songs were heavily co-written since Hold Me in 82'.

Welcome To The Room...Sara - Huge disappointment, And Lindsey's Island happy arrangement set against Stevie's heavy & not so coded lyrics are just ODD. Everyone losses on this song.

WISYA - I actually like the chorus and the inflection of Stevie's voice on this song, It's the verses that lose and bore me.

Joan Of Arc and Juliet should have been used on Tango instead of the last 2 songs IMO.

bluefox4000 11-09-2010 11:30 PM

Tango.......Stevie.......oy:(

Seven Wonders-Easily the best. Catchy, I like it.

Welcome to the Room.......Sara- It'd rather have an ice pick in my ear.....just appalling.

When I See You Again- I love the melody and the Lindsey ending. But that Vocal......Sounds like a billion ashtray's. goddamn Stevie.

So yea.....not good:nod:

Mick

Street Angel really isn't as bad as the rap it's given in my humble opinion. Sure, it's got it's share of real stinkers, but every Stevie solo album does in my opinion. I happen to think there are some truly strong tracks on Street Angel, most notably Blue Denim and Love Is Like A River.

For those who haven't heard Street Angel, give it a listen and decide for yourselves. Go to www.grooveshark.com and you can stream all the songs on Street Angel for free. There are quite a few people on this board (I'm not making an example out of anyone in particular!) who have judged this album harshly without listening to it first. Just go give it a listen... all you'll be out is your time if you end up not liking it. :)

The only song I've heard is Blue Denim and I really like it. I will have to go to that link after school today and listen to all the songs, thanks Louie.

I think it's a strong track but an ordinary song (however, it's certainly Sandy Stewart's best work on "Tango"). Clear, crisp arrangement--emblematic of the whole album.

Nothing good about this one to me. If we fans knew nothing of the circumstances behind this lyric, there isn't one of us on God's green Earth who would know what the hell this dumb song was about. And what's with the music? There isn't any! It's like Stevie's idea of sprechstimme. There's a total disconnect between the lyrical idea here (vague as it is) & the musical approach--kind of like putting Elvis Costello "angry young man" lyrics on a Jimmy Buffet track. It's a puzzle just why & how this track passed muster among the engineering & production team on the album, never mind the other members of Fleetwood Mac.

I adore this song. It takes me back to the early days of my Buckingham Nicks grand narrative. I wonder how many people in Fleetwood Mac are playing or singing anything on this.

Only if they used the "Book Of Miracles" backing track, otherwise it would probably have ended up much like the mutant travesty that is on TOSOTM.

I completely agree, it is definitely worth the money I think. Greta and Kick It are also very good.

If only Miranda were here to back Street Angel up :distress:

With most of my personal opinion aside, TISL is as good, if not better than Bella Donna and Wild Heart.

APerfectLie 11-10-2010 06:04 PM

I'm in the minority again, but I like all of Stevie's songs on this album. No, they aren't her best, but they aren't terrible IMO.

Seven Wonders- Best song on the album. Yes, Little Lies and Everywhere are good, but they seem somewhat generic to me. IDK why, but they do. Tango In The Night and Caroline are also really amazing songs, but I still like Seven Wonders the best. I know Stevie didn't write it, but she claims the lyrics were actually "very different" than what Sandy wrote, so kudos to Stevie!

Welcome to the Room... Sara- I love the subject matter of this song. And I like the lyrical way she wrote it. Very literal, but at the same time very confusing. Plus it has one of my favorite lines ever, "When you hang up that phone, well you cease to exist."

When I See You Again- Probably my least favorite song of hers on the album. However, she sounds so heartbroken in it, I like it. The "wassaamattababy" gets really repetitive, but alas, I still give it a listen every once in a while.

Nikolaj 11-10-2010 06:37 PM

Have read much TOSOTM bashing lately, and it's fine for those who do to have that opinion. I still stand by mine, which is that TOSOTM has the largest collection of excellently written songs of any SN solo album. She outdid herself with the songwriting; there may be some issues with the production, though not on every track.
For those who have never heard 'The Other Side Of The Mirror' know that there's a handful of us who think it best represents SN as a songwriter and there's some incredible vocals on it, too. Pick it up used, even. I think it's got better songs on it than TISL did!

It is actually one of my favorite Stevie albums, if anything for Ooh My Love and Alice.

Yeah, the Other Side Of The Mirror bashing lately has been a bit surprising to me, too. In my eyes, it's the very Stevie-est of Stevie's solo albums. Yes, it's got some embarrassingly awful lyrics and cheesy adult contemporary production in spots, but I think you can say that about any of Stevie's solo albums. I personally enjoy Other Side Of The Mirror... I like the fact Stevie kinda picked a concept/theme and ran with it. I wish she'd done more concept albums, in fact.

Yes, I love the album too. The only two songs I don't care for are Two Kinds Of Love and Whole Lotta Trouble. I don't hate them but I usually skip over them. I absolutely LOVE Rooms On Fire, Ghosts & Ooh My Love. I even enjoy Fire Burning. I also really like Alice and Juliet.

What I don't understand is how come her voice is so awful on When I see you again, but her voice is wonderful on the Seven wondera and Welcome to the Room...Sara. Where the songs recorded at different times? Really listen to her voice on Seven Wonders - voice is so good!

jellyman10 11-11-2010 07:16 AM

I guess I probably like WISYA most out of the three, but it's difficult to say 'like', coz it's just so wrenching to listen to.:distress:

Also like Seven Wonders when I watch the video, but it's too much pop (and yet not quite pop enough) for me using just my ears.

WTTR...S is just a bit boring musically.
