Never Listened..

I have to honestly say I have never heard any of Lindsey's solo work before. Could never find his albums in the stores, and never bothered to look for them on youtube or anything. Just never thought it was my cup of tea. I enjoy him more than anything with Fleetwood Mac, and I guess I'm kind of curious now about his solo work.

What are some of his best songs? Where should I start listening?! :)

Silver Springs 10-27-2010 02:16 PM

Personally I would start with his "Go Insane" album, as it's my favourite. :p

Go Insane is a great album, personally I think it's a bit "weird" though. Like it's my favourite but some of the stuff on there and the production is pretty weird and not so accessible as Out of the Cradle, which I think in general is considered his best, more like his FM material than the others I say. I haven't heard the more recent stuff well enough to judge but didn't like Law and Order at all, it's a pretty wacky album and I don't really like his wacky FM tunes so that could be why

Haha. Well I'm definitely one who embraces the "wierdness" in Lindsey's music. His new stuff tends to err on the side of caution I think, expecially his Under The Skin album. Don't get me wrong, they're still great. But his experimental approach has always endeared itself to me.

bluefox4000 10-27-2010 02:32 PM

My Two Favs are Out of the Cradle. and Gift of screws. Could never get into his first 2 albums, Law and Order and Go Insane. They just give me a headache. And Under the Skin was a grower. My fav song for the moment....cause it changes.......Is Treason:nod:

OH, Go Insane. I heard that song on The Dance, did I not? Okay so I lied, I've heard that one by him. I want the Go Insane album now, I really like the song so if the rest of the album is like that song it would rock:]

Be warned. The version Of Go Insane on the album is different then the one on the Dance. You may still like it though;)

Really? I guess that goes for Big Love too ..can't really stand it on TITN, but on the Dance it's alright

bluefox4000 10-27-2010 03:44 PM

Yea The version on the Go Insane album is full band and upbeat. I don't like it at all.......but you should judge for yourself.

I listened to Go Insane from the album on Youtube ...it was decent, but much prefer the Dance:nod:

Lindsfan 10-27-2010 06:21 PM

I think GOS and OOTC are his best albums. I can listen to either, beginning to end, anytime. I also think they're pretty accessible for new listeners...you know, not too weird, and yet they're still very Lindsey. I think he has a lot to say in both!

As for Go Insane, I LOVE the album, but wouldn't start with it. Both versions of the song are amzing, and I really like them equally. In fact, I wish they weren't the same song so he could play both in the same concert!! :D

TrueFaith77 10-27-2010 06:33 PM

You should hear them ALL in order. And the movie soundtrack stuff as well.

TerraRhiannon 10-27-2010 06:51 PM

They never have his CD's at the stores:( Not even the music stores.. ahh. They think I'm crazyyy cause all I do is order FM and stevie stuff from them! :p

Actually the music stores are the ones crazy for not already having Fleetwood Mac and other stuff on hand!

I only ever come across the "generic" albums, like the latest Greatest Hits, Peter Green's Green Shadows and other Greatest Hits albums of Fleetwood Mac at chain stores. At my local Record Store (very tiny) I've found the occasional one (Got a speciel edition Behind The Mask in a gift box for £4 which was great) but most of the time I have to order from Amazon or HMV online.

TerraRhiannon 10-27-2010 07:41 PM

Yeah HMV and CD Plus ..the only things I have EVER seen there is Crystal Visions, The Dance, The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac & Greatest Hits 1988. I'm like "?? that's it? *sigh*"

You found The Dance and Crystal Visions? Wow...You're spoiled lol. Ah well. The internet is the cause of and solution to all problems in that respect, so there's always an alternative lol. Or could do what I did and borrow albums from the local library and put them on your iPod. My Library hasn't quite come to terms with technology so they don't have protection against it. I do intent to buy the albums eventually (GoS and TiS-L especially), but at the moment I lack funds. I'm counting on the Bank of Mum and Dad at the moment lol.

Spoiled? The Dance & CV are two of the easiest to find!

TrueFaith77 10-27-2010 07:49 PM

The way to get them is amazon. they're not expensive.

Haha. Not in my neck of the woods. The usual rule of thumb in my town is "If it's not in the charts it's not rated". It's a wonder you can even find Elvis and The Beatles at my local HMV.

Yeah! Amazon is a Buddha send for music fans. I wouldn't have half of my collection if it wasn't for that lovely website.

Oh okay, I thought you were mocking me for some reason, lol. The Dance is in every store, even at the Shoppers Drug Mart down the road. And I looked at Amazon and you are so right.. everything is pretty cheap there. TISL is $8, and when I ordered it through HMV it came to $25

MissLadyLoki 10-27-2010 07:56 PM

Honestly, I know Stevie's solo work (and enjoy it more) than Lindsey's. For a starter, I say go with Out of the Cradle. Very good album and not too strange.

Speaking of Stevie's solo work, what's your favorite album? Mine's Wild Heart

I will have to listen Out of the Cradle.. i have a lot of catching up to do with Linds' work.

Stevie's solo work ..hmm.. would have to go with Wild Heart as well !! & after that TISL is very close!!!:)

Aww! You thought that? I'm sorry *hugs* My dry British wit does tend to be mistaken as viciousness where it isn't. Even when The Dance was newly released, I never found it any of our music shops. It's really odd. Maybe they just weren't expecting huge sales figures for my area *ponder*

Wow! That is cheap compared to HMV. They do tend to be pricey though. I noticed they seemed to put their prices up a little more after that git from one of the major record companies said that music should be sold for £1. What a complete twonk. That was just basically saying that music is worth nothing. Are you kidding? If anything should be sold for that little, it's the TV Licenses the British have to buy. They show nothing but dreck anyway so there's no point even owning a TV in all honesty, not when the good shows are streamed online anyway.

It's okay! I was like :distress: ...sometimes I'm sensitive..but now I understand what you meant!

And yeah, it's really sad when people think music isn't worth buying. makes me super mad!! You're from Britain? I would think that they would have a lot of their music there. ..guess not, eh.

For a long time, I knew only his Mac work, and just recently did I get to know his solo, and even then I know like 2 albums.

I'm sorry I made you pull that face. I'm very sensitive too and sometimes I can read people's comments to me and get really upset about them even if they didn't mean for it too.

It does make me sad too! And yeah, I am. West Yorkshire in England, actually. I think maybe because I'm from a more rural area, thus more cut off from "culture", may have something to do with it. Though we do have some pretty great Record Fairs often which I always blow far too much money at lol. There's more of a music scene in the bigger cities, like Manchester and London really. Camden (in London) is like a Mecca for music lovers and hippies (caters for me twofold lol).

To me, the best starter album for Lindsey is Out Of The Cradle. It's just a gorgeous work. Some of the songs have spoken or instrumental intro tracks beforehand... it's just a master work, in my opinion. You really can't go wrong with this album... it's so lyrically honest; lots of deep soul searching. On top of that, it's just dripping with beauty.

Lindsey's first two albums are definitely on the wacky side. Go Insane is about as far out in left field as you can go in pop music, but it's tremendous fun. It never fails to lift my mood. Law And Order is somewhat more conventional, but there is a decent mixture of quirky songs to go along with the middle of the road tracks as well.

Gift Of Screws in my opinion is another great starter album for a new Lindsey listener. It's kind of a grab bag of the best-of Lindsey's different styles he's tinkered with throughout his career. There are acoustic songs, experimental songs, pop songs, rock songs, quirky songs, traditional songs. Yet there's a commonality to all the tracks. It's like the perfect album, in my book. It's a microcosm of everything Lindsey Buckingham's ever been.

I found Under The Skin to be ceaselessly boring :sorry:. All those sighing/loud whispering vocals grate my nerves, and almost none of the songs have any form of bass to them. It's definitely a concept project... it's just not to my tastes. Down On Rodeo is one of the best songs ever penned by Lindsey, I just think it's unfortunate it got lost in this very ho-hum collection.

That is actually really wierd lol. Especially considering that most of the Yorkshire people I know seem to have something against travel beyond "the big hill". Good for them. They got out while they could :p Seriously. I can't wait to leave. I still don't know where I'll go once I'm finished with University, but I know it'll be better than my hometown. Maybe I'll just bum around with the Californian Hippies :p

I just listened to Countdown and Wrong by Linds.. they're pretty darn good~! What you said about his first 2 albums is funny because my Mother told me he was on LSD when he wrote them and she tells me it's just one of his acid trips. I dunno what to make of that,

You're from Canada...what part? I'm in Downstate New York, but I think I know someone on here from northern Manitoba that told me what real cold was like.

OK, back on topic, I have heard bts of Law and Order and, in many ways, it's unintetionally hilarious. Some of the voices he puts on his songs are just funny-sounding to me for some odd reason. And as for Go Insane, the parts I heard are a bit odd, but I'll maintain the fact that his hair then was a crime against hair everywhere.

And speaking of Wrong, did you hear my favorite line, the one that gets bleeped on TV?

Law And Order was a wonderful concept album. Although I do admit that he must have been on twelve different types of hallucinogenics at least to come up with Bwana. It was like a stoner's Lion Sleeps Tonight hehe. But I love it :p

Yes, that line! I thought it was funny how they had to bleep it every time they said it on his Behind the Music.

NYC is a 2 hour train ride for me on the LIRR, so that makes life easier. Maybe you could come down here again sometime.

I agree with you about that being a good starter album and, of course GOS too. To heck with telling people to go in chronological order. Let's get these folks hooked first and then we can give them Bwana.

You've never listened to LB solo! Do you have any used music stores around? If not, try Amazon.com. I would start at the beginning with Law and Order. It's different! As complete albums, I'd say Out of the Cradle, Go Insane, and Under the Skin are the best.

I always thought that was weird. In 1992, when the video was played on MTV/VH-1, they never bleeped Mr. Rockcock. Why do that so many years later??
