What do you think is Stevie's worst lyric?
Hi guys,
I'm guessing that the "chimpanzee" line will listed by a lot of you and yes, it is God-awful, but the other line that I think is up there as one of her worst has to be: "she depends on her music like a husband" from Ghosts. I actually like The Other Side Of The Mirror if I'm in the right mood, apart from the last track, and really like Ghosts too - but just not that line...ugggghhh! What other lines make you all cringe? |

Street Angel and OSOTM are full of bad lyrics, but the one I hate the most is:
"It hurts my self esteem, it hurts my everything" - Not Make Believe "You can't have him, I do have him" also makes me cringe. |
"It hurts my self-esteem, it hurts my everything...I am reeling...oh, it hurts my feelings" is pretty bad.
Her bellowing "Operation Desert Shield! Operation Desert Storm!" on Desert Angel always made me cringe. "Would you write this for me, he says no, you write your songs yourself" is atrocious. "Depends on her music like a husband" always bothered me, but it's far from her worst lyric. Same w/ the chimpanzee line. I think "Gate & Garden" is about her vagina. Oh, and "my walls are flaming." lol I'm sure there are others that I can't think of right now. |

"My walls are flaming"
"Well they might as well have caged her own baby" and yes, all the chimp lines make me cringe. "Well it's better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all" |
"Immersed in a hardcore world"
"She's got a million bucks and she looks like it..." Silver Girl is a minefield of cringes! That said, I really love the chorus |

But then, nobody really does  |
'Silver Girl' and 'That Made Me Stronger' both have lyrics that I thought were so beneath her, 'girly girl' in SG and a lot of 'TMMS'. She liked the songs, though, so that's good. Sometimes, I think Stevie just has to do what Stevie thinks she has to do, whether or not the decisions make for artistically good choices.
I also hated 'Goodbye Baby' as an encore on the SYW tour, it seemed so manipulative and inappropriate, considering, as the final song of the concerts. I think it is pretty lousy on the cd also, but I know some people love the song, so no offense meant. There's so much SN has written, recorded and performed that I do like a lot, so I focus more on that to not question my lifetime of fandom. I agree with the thread-starter, Dodfather, that the forgetful chimpanzee will get some votes. Uh, forgotten. |
"It makes no difference at all cause I wear boots all summer long" (it's more funy than bad IMO)
"For the moment that I'm Bruce Lee, eyes all kill poor ol' lonely on the edge of 17" (I probably misheard that one badly) "My walls are flaming" "Lightning strikes maybe once, maybe twice" (as much as I love Gypsy, that's hilariously bad) |
Oh you guys. I actually have no problem with most of those lyrics. The two I do have a problem with are:
"They may tell you that you hold the world in you hands, but they always GIVE it back." Shouldn't it be take it back? "Seen anything today never seen anything like you" LOL WUT? I always felt this line should have been "Seen many things today, but I've never seen anything like you." |

"And she stares at the stairs...ooh well there are many things to stare at these days"

"The sky is not crying, the sky is blue. "
Most awful thing she has ever written. |

[QUOTE=APerfectLie;916712]Oh you guys. I actually have no problem with most of those lyrics. The two I do have a problem with are:
"They may tell you that you hold the world in you hands, but they always GIVE it back." Shouldn't it be take it back? OK, I'm impressed. Never have heard that very intelligent observation before, good one. Now, intrepretations: 'They may tell you that you hold the world in your hands, but they always give it back' ok... I get it. They told Stevie she had the world in her hands, but then 'they' took the world out of Stevie's hands, and gave the world back to the world, because the world belongs to itself, not to or in Stevie's hands." OR it's not about Stevie, 'you' hold the world in your hands, but 'they' take the world out of your hands where it shouldn't be, and 'give it back'--- to the world, where the world should be, not in your hands! And sure, someone else has the ability to remove the world where it shouldn't be and give it back- to the world! A public service, of sorts. APerfectLie's is the perfect logical explanation, the lyric is sort of strange! But to those of us who lived during 'RAL'- giving the world back to the world makes almost as much sense as 'this is not the world, not the world, not the world, not the real world' lovely and trippy hooky "Nightmare" remix that was more interesting than the version on the RAL album cd. The remix is so cool, both the 7"inch edit and the extended version on the 'ICW' maxi single. I just love that grainy black and white cover photo of Stevie on the ICW maxi, she looks so stunningly, gorgeously decadent! So 'Rock A Little' Now take the world out of your hands and give it back to the world! |

i think it's a great play on words! |
"You can ride high atop your pony
I know you won't fall... 'Cause the whole thing's phoney" I hate how the album starts with that |
I had originally chosen the lyrics from Docklands but was reminded that she didn't write them. Thank God! Still, my mind spins when I hear her singing about going down to a laudromat!

She didn't write Docklands, people!

"The closest you've ever come to me was to help me up the stairs You stood in the middle of the stairway You nearly dragged me up the stairs" She had an odd fascination with stairs in the late 80s. |
'Welcome to the choir, sir' (Welcome To the Room, Sara)
'Ooh, you're consistent. Hey, and that's good' (Love Is Like a River)....edit: I meant Listen To the Rain! I think I'm losing my memory at 36 years old!!! |
I agree with some already mentioned, like "stairs at the stairs." But holy hell, "Listen to the Rain" is one awful mess:
Well you're a victim Phantom of the opera And you've been everywhere... And you live in dark shadows You do what you want to... There's no Beauty and the Beast here No...no...no... There's no Beauty and the Beast here!! Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeechhhhhhhh! "It's like a river, it's never ending" -- Illume "I was born in the desert, so I know how it feels there" -- Desert Angel "Rhinestone collections all the time...I wonder what Greta would say" -- Greta "Such words to her over the phone" -- Thousand Days "Well I talked to my famous friend last night; My third day up...well, his second nighter." -- Two Kinds of Love :distress:  |

You can ride high atop your pony--Stevie can be on top of the world, a big time rock and roll star flying on private planes, riding in expensive cars I know you won't fall--very confident in who she is, an accomplished, famous star still rising 'Cause the whole thing's phony"--the entertainment business is sorta fake-players only love you when they're playing-sheltered from the real world |
Quote:
The sky is not crying, the sky is blue. "--nobody is crying, everything is great, blue skies baby |

That line, the bolded one, is actually the line that made me write my own songs basicly...so no, that's a good line ^^ I think, if you are a singer/writer, write your own songs! |

Woah - this thread has run and run! Great stuff guys. I had mercifully forgotten about That Made Me Stronger (the worst track on Trouble In Shangri-La) and Silver Girl (ditto for Say You Will)...BAD lyrics!
|
LOVE this thread, especially markolas' post on Page 1! Hilarious.
Here are a couple that haven't been mentioned yet: "I should have turned away and ran" ("Smile at You") It should be "run"!! Hearing that is like having a stone in my shoe. "Some carry a stiletto in their garter/Along with everything else/That they carry" ("Alice") This makes me laugh. It's really funny. "So she stood there in the hallway frozen/In the dark/And her heart broke down/She cried/She fell to the floor/One tear..." etc. etc. ("Love Is") This language is purpler than purple. I also second the lines mentioned from "Jane," "Silver Girl," "Not Make Believe" and others. "Not Make Believe" is tragic because I love the music/arrangement for that song, but the words are a string of botched cliches ("They both rush by/Like a thief in the night" - should be thieVES! Another grammar fail!) |
