Whole Lotta Crazy
For all Stevie likes to make fun of Bob Dylan (or Bob Seger) for being crazy, she’s not exactly prime material for the cover of Sanity Fair. Of course, we love her anyway, or maybe we love her because of it.
I thought we could discuss moments where we realized there’s a whole lot of crazy contained in that little tiny lady. One for me was a quote from In Style in 2001 for the Trouble in Shangri-la listening party: Quote:
What are some moments/quotes that have screamed our girl's not playing with a full deck? |
That's probably not that bad. I tend to fall on the side of neurotic and obsessive too. Especially when I get up in the wee hours of the night to tidy my wardrobe :p
I always thought her collecting of dolls was a bit creepy. Almost reminds me of Baby Jane. :s |
I think the doll collecting is creepy. Something about their lifeless staring eyes... freaks me out.
I can totally picture her changing all the lights though, I'd do that. It sounds fun >_> |

Still, I think spending hours in the middle of the night when you should be sleeping just to roam your house and fiddle with the lights isn't exactly the definition of sane. But who wants to be sane, anyway? Lighting is everything, dammit! :] |

stage clothes are a good one.
how bout the 79 jim ladd interviews. now that was a whole lot of crazy for you |
I remember hearing her mention once about how she always need a fireplace going on in her house, and if it's like 90 degrees out, she just turns up the A/C higher. Even her mom said she was wasting tons of energy doing that.
|
I can see her taking along a few packed wardrobe chests full of stage clothes while on tour but I highly doubt it's everything she owns. In pictures and certain televised interviews you can see her clothes on racks wrapping around entire rooms. And why bother taking so much on tour if she's only gonna wear the same 4 outfits each night? That's whats puzzling.

I still doubt she hauls around everything she owns. I would think her little stint with the IRS was enough that she just goes ahead and pays now without much fuss because we haven't heard of any troubles since. And if I remember correctly in the early 90's I think it was almost 300,000 she was trying to write off.

Oh, my dolls are all over the place. My china cabinet has dolls on the glass display in the top and dvds in the cupboards below. Meanwhile, the china is packed away in a box somewhere. Dolls on the mantle, on the nightstands, in the closet and four "reborn" baby dolls in my bedroom, so lifelike that when the exterminator saw them he was scared that he'd exposed infants to toxic chemicals.
So, in summary, I find nothing creepy about collecting dolls. No, sir. I don't carry mine around though. Quote:

The dolls aren't crazy? How 'bout that time she locked herself in her room for days with hundreds of her dolls and wouldn't talk to anyone?
Sounds crazy enough to me. |
Another incident that instantly pops into my mind is the crazy Street Angel Hair. She didn't use a krimping or curling iron to attain all the volume, either... she spent hours every single night braiding it. And the end product of all that unnecessary labor is still rather questionable...

It's funny that the dolls have been mentioned so much because it was a doll that really made me question her sanity...even though it was only for a brief second. I saw this documentary once about this lady who makes these dolls that look and feel like real babies...I mean, scary real...for the purpose of people to treat them like real babies. A lot of her business comes from women and couples who can't have children or people who have lost them. We're talking naming them, setting up a nursery, driving them around in a carseat, being totally emotionally attached...the whole baby deal. Anyway, I saw a pic of Stevie carrying a baby through an airport once and immediately I thought "oh christ...wtf is she doing taking that baby on an airplane??" Now, I don't believe for a second that Stevie actually takes those dolls anywhere near that seriously but for that one brief, initial moment I couldn't help but be worried about her state of mind.

In interviews promoting TOSOTM she claimed she would write in her journals on the floor of her walk in closet in the middle of the night with a flashlight for light so no one would know she was awake when she was supposed to be sleeping.
What I find strange about this is that it was her house. She paid all the bills and she needed to sneak around? |

For me it has to be the story she later recanted- when she said she kept her old breast implants in her freezer! How I loved that! But then, she said they weren't there anymore . Maybe she thawed them out and found a good use for them!
|
I have to admit, if these things are considered crazy, then, I am a raving LUNATIC! My entire family calls me the ecentric one, so, I guess I can relate to her quirkiness!
That being said, doll eyes in the dark of a bedroom, kind of flip me out, at times! |

I think Stevie likes comforting things. Like being in that closet. Her house was probably never just hers. People there. Assistants, friends. "Why aren't you asleep?". She does live in a fishbowl for her life. Wants to be alone, and yet doesn't want to be alone and probably doesn't want to tell them to go away and mind their own business. What's a rock diva to do? |
I won't use the fireplace here, because I think the residue after the fire burns out is unhealthy for my cat and for myself. I've been told that's ridiculous, but I believe it. Maybe Stevie had an electric fireplace? Yorkies are cat-sized, I can't believe that breathing in flames and soot could be good for their little bodies, and Stevie has seemed to have had a number of Yorkies.
Of course, pets don't live forever. My cat is 8 and she knows that I need her to live to be 20, at least, and she will, God willing. This cat is the joy of my life. Fireplace. That was in this thread. Last post? Sorry if my comment is in the wrong thread. Fireplace smoke in the house is not good for little animals, anyone agree? I think that was my reason.... |

The whole Street Angel krimp-via-braiding thing might not be Stevie's fault, though. Maybe she was so cash strapped after her run in with the IRS that she couldn't even send Karen down the the K-Mart for a krimping iron? :p Or perhaps her recent tumble into the fireplace (that was always on, even during heat waves) rendered her with a case of Krimping Amnesia? Perhaps much like the bewbcicles Stevie once kept frozen in her Frigidaire, Stevie's krimping iron suddenly ceased to exist? Maybe when Lindsey wasn't hitting Stevie with guitars onstage back in the day, he'd hit her with a krimping iron backstage? And now she has an unavoidable krimping phobia? The theories are endless... :D |

I was thinking about a few more Stevie eccentricities that entertain me oh so much. I think Rolling Stone pointed it out back in 1981, but the fact that she seems to remember Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast without the happy ending always struck me as a little funny. Just from hearing her talk about it, I thought it was a full-blown tragedy. Her love of pseudonymous. Most people, if they bother to even think about it, stick to a single pseudonym, but not Stevie. Oh no, there's Katherine DeLongpre (my personal favorite), Lily Chanel, Sara Anderson... what else have we got? Might we consider her abuse of the word “well” to be a strange verbal tic? :p And this bundle of twitching and babbling crazy is probably more drug related than anything else, but it’s still hilarious. “The Wild Heart is Bella Donna gone wild. Just really wild, you know? Completely wild. Did I mention it was wild?” |

In Phoenix, and this is where that Stevie quote came from, there is a law in effect titled "no burn days." I think it's something like you are allowed to burn a fire every other day. Or once a week. Can't really remember because I no longer live there. Anyhoo, your neighbors are supposed to report you if you are breaking this law and then you will be fined. I wonder how many tickets Stevie had to pay or if her neighbor's just overlooked her eccentricities. |

I really have no idea, but she said she kept them there as a reminder of what she had inflicted upon herself with no real need to have done so. Others have speculated she'd had her implants redone at some point in the late 80s, so maybe she got the sets confused? I dun't know, sir. |

The one time I thought she was really unhinged (rather than just cute & funny) was her marriage.
We went to the City of Hope show in October 1982, & at the turnstiles we got little blue brochures that were dedicated to Robin. These pamphlets gave her dates & gave some information about the City of Hope. That night was when we first learned that this important friend of Stevie's -- of the whole band -- was dead. (She was the lady to most of us who had her photo in the Bella Donna songbook with the dedication.) So I think a couple of months go by, & the Pop Eye section (a daily collection of short-item rock news written by Patrick Goldstein) in the L.A. Times reports that Stevie Nicks has married Kim Anderson, & he & she now belong to some strange cult or church yada yada yada. It was so weird to read that. I mean, to begin with, nobody ever thought of Stevie Nicks ever getting married, but even more so, marrying the widow of this friend of hers. It was VERY strange. I'm not sure whether people encountering that incident years later got the freakishness of it, but it was freakish & everybody talked about it. We even thought Fleetwood Mac would break up because the news would ruin her career. But then the Wild Heart album came out & the Wild Heart tour started, & that was all forgotten. It was a cool time to follow Stevie Nicks's career, definitely. |

It must have been so much more exciting to be a fan when she was actually in the media. Now we just have to wait months at a time for news to come about... |
