Tahoe Reviews

[This is largely made up of quotes from the Star interview, but it's a bit different.]

Stevie Nicks has grown up. After years in the spotlight with Fleetwood Mac and her own robust solo career, the blonde, throaty chanteuse has finally buried some demons and a couple of hatchets.

Nicks’ focus is fully vested in her amazing songwriting. She has been working with ex-Eurythmics guitarist-producer Dave Stewart on an album that is “mostly finished.”
“There is an Italian love song I wrote when I was in Italy last summer,” the singer told the Ventura County Star in late July. “There are two tracks that Michael Campbell (from Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers) wrote that I wrote songs on top of, and they are just magical. There are love songs, hard rock ‘n’ roll songs, really contemplative songs and very Bob ‘Dylan-y’ songs and there are lots of good poems.

“We have a song I wrote when I was 17 that is the words to an Edgar Allan Poe poem called “Annabel Lee.” It’s just lived in my head since I was 17. I didn’t record it about until 10 years ago. We found the demo and I’m not sure why I didn’t put it in (the 2001 album,) “Trouble in Shangri-la,” but I guess things got misplaced,” Nicks surmised.

From her early days bouncing around with her family to homes in Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Nicks had written a vast bit of material while still in her teens. Then she met guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and started what would become the focal relationship of her life; well, maybe, so far. When Buckingham was offered a steady gig with Fleetwood Mac, he famously insisted on bringing Stevie along, saying they were a “package deal.”

Fleetwood Mac — post Lindsey and Stevie — became something for the history books. While the London-formed band with guitarist Peter Green had put out 14 lukewarm albums prior, the addition of the couple led to mega-recordings that included “Rumours,” the 1977 album that has sold more than 40 million copies to date. While still cranking out hits with Mac, plus a heavy tour schedule, Stevie Nicks showed her chops in 1981 with her first solo project. “Bella Donna” went to No. 1 and she has done well with five more solo efforts.

While most recognized for her husky contralto, diaphanous shawls, honeyed locks and platform heels, Nicks’ songwriting skills aren’t to be glossed over. For Fleetwood Mac, she has written still-popular hits like “Rhiannon,” “Landslide,” “Dreams” and “Gold Dust Woman.”

Her solo projects have included “Stand Back,” “Leather and Lace” and her famous duet with pal Tom Petty, “Stop Dragging My Heart Around.” Altogether Nicks, with and without Fleetwood Mac, has been nominated for seven Grammys, while “Rumours” took the award for Album of the Year when it came out.

Mixed in with all this fame was the requisite overindulgence of the day. The blend of superstardom, wealth and, let’s just say, several interpersonal problems among the band, led to Nicks’ addictions to alcohol and drugs. In the 1980s and ’90s, there was a flurry of emotional stress, as Nicks and Buckingham notoriously split up after six years together, and the band went often from disbanded to reunited. Clean since 1994, Nicks told an Australian publication, “The Age,” about the change:

“My life is calmer now because I’m not on drugs, but it’s also wonderful and exciting because I’m not on drugs. A lot of the time during those last four or five years before I went into rehab, I really didn’t think I was going to make it out alive. So I’m thrilled every day that I did,” Nicks said.

Of course, in the day, it was hard not to come across music and drug abuse. Early on, after watching both Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix perform live, Nicks walked away with inspiration for her own blossoming career.

In her recent V.C. Star interview, Nicks recalled, “Another show that really knocked me out was Jimi Hendrix at San Jose State. He was awesome. He was extremely humble and extremely nice to the audience. (Janis) had a little bit of that arrogant thing, but that was OK because she was so great. You can be arrogant if you can back it up.

“Jimi just blew my mind. I came away from those two shows going, ‘Well, I have to remember to always be humble because I preferred his humbleness.’ I thought that’s going to be me on stage. I will be very humble on stage always. Sometimes I will talk too much and sometimes I will be too gabby, but I will go that route and I will try not to be arrogant. It’s easy to be arrogant because all of a sudden you were rich and a year and a half ago you were a waitress.”

Ridiculously hot still at age 62, Stevie Nicks has listened well to her early advice. Her public persona — despite the oft Buckingham bickering, has always been personable with her fans. She and Fleetwood Mac (Christine McVie has retired) continue to tour and put out albums, and in recent years Nicks and Buckingham have become comfortable again onstage.

“Now we are good. We are actually friends,” she once told VH1. “He has two children, a little girl and a little boy. Needless to say, going from a selfish rock ‘n’ roll god to having two babies, it’s very much changed his life. He can’t be selfish anymore. And he is thrilled with these little kids; they are precious. He is a much softer, sweeter man and I love that, because I knew that softer man a long time ago. So I’m seeing my old friend back again.”

Ah, there’s the Stevie Nicks we connect with — the poetess-enchantress who waded through turmoil, but has matured because of just that. Now, she’s on a quick five-show run of live performances, which includes a stop at the Harvey’s Outdoor Concert series Friday, Aug. 6.

According to the Santa Barbara Independent, Nicks plans to do many of her hits “and then you throw a couple of new things in that you don’t want to tell anybody about because it’s fun. We’re going to try to do three songs that we don’t usually do, two of which are not my songs, and one that I haven’t done in a long time.”

“I just did 83 shows for Fleetwood Mac. Our last show was on the 21st of December, so it’s like I just got off the road. For me, this is a breeze. I am really excited about it. We only have three days of rehearsal and we haven’t played in almost two years, but my band is so great that we kind of don’t have to. This is not a tour, but just a few shows. I don’t know what they are going to call it — the “This Is Not a Tour” Tour?”

Stevie Nicks sings classics at Lake Tahoe and keeps her fans happy, August 7, 2010

STATELINE — Singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks entertained a packed house of all ages at Harvey’s Outdoor Arena for nearly two hours Friday night.

Following a 30-minute performance from Mia Dyson, Nicks opened with “Fall from Grace” and “Outside the Rain.”

A performer for more than four decades, the 62-year-old Nicks sang solo hits and those from Fleetwood Mac, a band with which she once sang. She still has a strong voice and her waist-length blond hair makes her seem some 20 years younger.

The show was part of the Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series.

Seven musicians accompanied her along with two back-up singers.

Nicks used props, such as a tambourine with streamers attached, Mardi Gras-style beads and flowing scarves.

The ever-changing stage backdrop included the appearance of lightning strikes, outer space, flying birds and various patterns.

Other songs included “Rhiannon,” “Dreams,” “Stand Back,” “Gold Dust Woman” and “Edge of Seventeen.” The drummers and guitarist also performed several solo pieces.

During “Landslide,” some fans reacted to Nicks during the line “Time makes you bolder, children get older, I’m getting older too.” They shouted stuff such as, “So am I.”

One of her encore songs was Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll.”

It didn’t take long for some people in the crowd to light up their marijuana and for the odor to drift around to everyone else. However, this wasn’t a surprise because this smell erupts at most concerts. Thank goodness this one was outdoors.

Why in the world do I see so many reviews or articles that call Stevie a former member of Fleetwood Mac? How hard is it to use Wikipedia?

That's how far off the radar both Stevie and Fleetwood Mac are. Outside of the Stevie's fans, the masses have no idea what she's up to or if she's even still around.

You're setting the bar high. I'm just glad whenever I don't read an interviewer report that Stevie is now on good terms with ex-husband LindsAy Buckingham.

Did a 12 year old write this review? It reads almost as bad as that P.O.S. book "Read Between My Lines".

Hahaha. So true. Since when are tambourines a "prop"?
I have a feeling the writer is old. Very old. Reno is a weird place.

I'm having a hard time finding Santa Barbara reviews.... have any been circulating? Outside of that one posted on the Santa Barbara bowl thread, of course.

I haven't seen any; and it's not like any of them would be better than your review.

Face it, Dani. You've written the definitive review of the Santa Barbara Bowl show!

I kinda feel that Stevie's voice has become much better than on the Australian Leg of Unleashed.

I don't know if I'm alone in noticing this LOL...& not to sound the wrong way.....but....

At Stevie's shows, there seem to be large quantities of "Mac Fans"..... large quantities of "I only know radio hit" fans....and large numbers of "I just think Stevie Nicks is cool & I go crazy when I hear Edge of 17, Rhiannon & Dreams, cause that's all I know...LOL

I seem to run into less of Stevie's solo career fans...where are you guys? :) I'm in Los Angeles & I know I'm not alone ;)

Example.....at the Santa Barbara show, there were two friends who were talking once the show was over. As my friends & I stood in the pit, waiting for the crowd to disburse, this is what I heard...

"She didn't play that many Fleetwood Mac songs!"

"Yes she did...she played thunder only happens when it's raining"

OMG! I couldn't believe I heard that LOL....this from someone with a pit seat!!!

You took the words right out of my mouth! Apparently, if you can look around and observe what "props" are used, what backdrops are displayed, and report on what songs were performed, anyone can be a journalist!

Clearly this Carla woman has no clue who Stevie is, and I'm sure got most of her info (song titles) from people sitting beside her...oh, and from Wikipedia!

Last night I attended my first Stevie Nicks concert. I saw her once before--in 1981, at a Tom Petty concert, she came onstage and did the two songs, one from her album and one from his, that they'd done together. It wasn't enough.

So last night, almost three decades later, I finally saw her in concert. Sadly, I was less than completely impressed.

Oh, there was plenty of classic Stevie all right. Some of the things you'd expect at one of her concerts--the voice, the shawl, the spinning--those were there, and much appreciated. It was mostly her playlist that sucked.

It was a bad omen when I didn't even know the first sang she sang. I knew the second song, Outside The Rain, but it was a very minor song of hers; in fact, I doubt it was ever even on the radio. Dreams was the first big song of hers that she sang.

We got Dreams. We got Rhiannon. We got Edge of Seventeen. We got Stand Back. And we got Landslide. But really, no Sara? No Seven Wonders? No Gypsy? No Rooms On Fire? No Silver Springs? She could do some song by Bob Seger that nobody's ever heard of, and do a Led Zeppelin song, but couldn't do one of those? Really? Compare the list of songs she did to the list of songs she didn't do--is the latter the lesser list? And to add to all that, it seemed a short concert--didn't have my watch so I couldn't tell for sure, but the warm-up act started well after 8, and we were in front of another casino asking for the time at quarter to 11.

Before the show started I was telling the friend I went with that I'd bet she'll have the two backup singers she's had on all her albums, Lori and Sharon. And I hoped against hope that she wouldn't have that nasty, grungy individual, Waddy Wachtel, as her guitarist.

As soon as everyone was on stage, I recognized Wachtel immediately. I don't like him, never have, never will. He may even be a good guitarist, but I don't like him as a person. I was disappointed that he was there.

I couldn't see one of the backup singers, but I could tell the other had dark hair. I asked my friend if the one I couldn't see had lighter hair, and he confirmed she did. Sharon and Lori. Nailed it.

Stevie's over 60 years old, but she still put on a good show. She didn't hit every high note in the songs--didn't even try--but it was still her voice that I heard. It sounded good. She sounded good. I felt good.

I'm not disappointed I went. I'm just disappointed that it could have been so much better.

The show was at the Harvey's outdoor amphitheater, very near to the lake itself. It was about 80 degrees during the day in Tahoe yesterday, which is about as close to perfect weather that you can get there. And even though by the end of the concert there was a slight chill in the air, it wasn't cold at all. For a summer concert series, it's a prime venue.

See, Stevie isn't completely off her nutter when she says that many of the people at her concerts want to hear the hits (though some seem to get confused and want to hear the Mac hits).

Yeah, but if she sank to just singing the hits for the sake of satisfying casual fans, I would seriously be outrageously disappointed in her. I don't think I'd go see her live again, and that's saying something huge for me.

DestinyRules 08-08-2010 11:55 AM

Based on what I've seen of several artists in concert (not just Stevie/Mac, but across the spectrum of artists I like, which means artists I've gone to see live), any show is a balancing act. Of course, you have to do the megahits that even the most casual fan knows. Sometimes, those folks are buying up a bunch of tickets. But you also have to consider that some of the people in the stands will be your diehards who know every song you've ever done, including that obscure album track you've only performed one time on The Tonight Show back in 1978.

A prime example of this is when you're touring to support your latest record. Some artists will flood their set with a bunch of songs from the new record. They'll really push the new material and expect their fans to not only have bought the new record, but to have listened to it several times. Or sometimes, they'll tour with the new material and expect the fans to try to catch up by buying the new record when it hits stores or buying the songs they play off iTunes.

Others will sprinkle in a few of the new songs while concentrating mostly on their radio hits, or the radio hits and the album cuts that are widely recognizable by the fan base.

It's impossible to please everyone. Some fans are going to be delighted that Stevie pulled out "Love Is" and did the demo version instead of the album version. Others are going to walk away upset because they didn't hear "Sara", not knowing that Stevie rarely performs that with her solo band. Some fans are going to be juiced that they heard "Fall From Grace." Others are going to be pissed she did a song from her last record that wasn't even a single. It's the life of going to a concert.

The thing I'd say to that person (and I'm not going to use the word "fan") who was disappointed he/she didn't hear the Mac hits is that Stevie is trying to cater her setlist to a wide range of fans: Those who have followed her every move since 1975 and those who only know her biggest Fleetwood Mac tunes. She's not going to get it perfectly for everyone, but "it's all right baby, [she's] doing the best that [she] can."

An Evening with Stevie Nicks at Harvey's Lake Tahoe
August 7, 8:40 PMReno Lake Tahoe Travel Examiner Sharon Gay

Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series First-Time Show For Stevie Nicks

Legendary Stevie Nicks opened with “Fall from Grace” and “Outside the Rain” then continued to delight her audience for two hours under the stars at Harvey's Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena in Stateline on Friday night with hit songs including “Rhiannon,” “Dreams,” “Stand Back,” “Gold Dust Woman”, “Edge of Seventeen”, and Led Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll."

Stevie, popular American singer-songwriter, best known for her work with Fleetwood Mac and an extensive solo career, which collectively have produced over forty Top 50 hits and has sold nearly 120 million albums, hit the stage for the first time ever at Harveys Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series at Harvey's Outdoor Arena in Stateline, Nevada on Friday, Aug. 6. Harveys Lake Tahoe Summer Concert Series has presented outdoor concerts to sell out audiences in South Lake Tahoe on weekends all summer with headliners such as Tim McGraw, Elton John and Rescal Flats.

The voice and songwriting talent of Stevie Nicks, both as a solo artist and as a member of Fleetwood Mac, is truly the stuff of legend. Indisputably, one of the most successful female artists in rock history, she is noteworthy for an extraordinary career that includes multiple Grammy awards, numerous Gold and Platinum awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

After joining Fleetwood Mac in 1975, Stevie and her band released an eponymous collection of recordings that went straight to No. 1. The follow-up album, Rumours (1977), became a record-setting hit. It spent more than 31 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200; and earned the group a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978. Nicks' song "Dreams," inspired by the group's dissolving relationships, was the band's first No. 1 single.

In between releasing albums with Fleetwood Mac, Stevie recorded her first solo album in 1981, Bella Donna, which went on to sell over 5 million copies. Stevie continued on at a prodigious rate, recording 1982's Mirage with Fleetwood Mac and her second solo effort, The Wild Heart, in 1983. Throughout the next decade, she continued to tour and turn out independent records as well as albums with Fleetwood Mac, including the solo effort, The Other Side of the Mirror (1989), Behind the Mask with Fleetwood Mac (1990), and a solo compilation, Timespace (1991).

In 1997, Fleetwood Mac reunited and released The Dance. The related tour earned them $36 million. Stevie also put out a boxed set dubbed Enchanted, and added two songs to the soundtrack for Practical Magic (1998). That same year, Fleetwood Mac was given one of the greatest honors in the world of rock: induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her last solo album of original material, Trouble in Shangri-La, earned her a Grammy nomination and she just performed over 80 dates in 2009 with Fleetwood Mac. Last year she also released an amazing live DVD & CD compilation entitled, Live In Chicago.
