lesbians really know how to make something sound poetic.

Carrie- I don't know you except from knowing you by how you write, so I just want to say, with admiration, happy birthday to a woman with a LOT of balls, in the best way! (Your 'Merry Effing Christmas' on the check memo on an out of state speeding ticket deserves to be adopted by anyone making out an out-of-state check to the cops who deliberately stop cars with 'other state plates'-- Brilliant!)
I seriously cannot believe how many of us were all born in June and July. |

thanks for the compliment. that reminds me - fun fact! in some areas you can get arrested for putting change in expired parking meters. i discovered this because i posted on facebook that i went down the street putting quarters in expired meters while a hapless metermaid, citation book in hand, watched, and someone pointed me to this story: http://www.informationliberation.com/?id=28583 i mean really. this makes me want to buy a bunch of guns, a bunch of dogs, and a bunch of land in montana, and just hunker down.* *i'm sure i was just put on a government watchlist for this comment. your tax dollars (and parking meter/ticket money!) at work! |

That's all hilarious, and scary, that one can be arrested for being a good samaritan. TMI follows, but back circa 1992, when I was in LA, I lived close by to a Sunset Blvd. office I had a second job at, easy money, at an answering service 1 am to 9 am 3 nights a week to go along with my 'career'- I'd moved into a condo by Fountain Ave and Olive, for anyone who knows LA...I'd use my car for my day job, it required I do so, but would walk the 20 minutes down Santa Monica Blvd then up Pointsettia to Sunset, where the night job was. So it was maybe 12:40 am and I saw this parked white limo off Santa Monica Blvd, and a few guys talking to the guy inside, some getting in, some leaving, and a few cop cars around the corner. I knew what was going on. If you don't know LA, the male hustlers worked Santa Monica Blvd starting at Fairfax and working East, where I'd happen to walk to my night job 3 times a week, briskly. Usually. I decided I had to go inside the white limo. I took a look at the guy and said 'You're a cop. aren't you? And you're doing a sting on the gay hustlers' and he smirked, nodded, and said 'Get out of the car'-- For the rest of the 10 minutes I walked, I warned every guy I saw about the white limo. The following year I saw an episode of 'Cops' and one of the guys I warned being handcuffed, with the same cop in a white limo, not sure if it was the same night. In hindsight, I shouldn't have been so in the cops face. The 2 minutes I was in the limo, I told him something along the lines of 'I work for a record company during the day and I'm on my way to a 2nd job to pay for this condo I bought, and these guys are all facing degrading, bad men just so they have money to try to live in this snakepit of Los Angeles, they could well die of AIDS, and you're trying to bust them instead of the old men who try to pick them up? How is that to serve and protect?" THATS when I was told to get out of the limo. I know, or sensed, that I was being filmed and recorded the entire time and didn't care. I was in my late 20s but still looked like a teenager (once you hit 40, age catches up w ya) and I kinda wonder now how I got the 'moral outrage' that I felt- I'd never associated with hustlers, but ya know, a white limo is inviting, and I just felt this is wrong. I guess I'm lucky I didn't get in trouble, but I felt God with me, I felt safe, and just had to tell him the guys had crappy enough lives and faced danger all the time, and well, that was probably about all. He was done with me, I didn't take the bait and try to hustle him. I've always wondered 'if' I ever made, or make, a big success of myself, if that 'Cops' video would or will come back to haunt me. In a way, I'm proud of what I did. But, I guess it was stupid. |
^ i dunno, i get a vicarious thrill from anyone who gives LAPD a hard time. protect and serve is a joke; it's more like "f*ck you, citizen." when i reported my truck stolen, i called the cops and was told they would not come out and take a report, i had to go into the station. when i reiterated that my truck was stolen and i therefore had no transportation to the station, they said, yeah, that sucks, doesn't it? i got to the station and filled out the report, and the officer i was talking to wanted to know why i had waited to long to report it. "did you just think you were going to wait to deal with it later?" "um, no, my roommate noticed it gone early this morning, but i didn't get up until noon." etc.
oh, and when it was recovered? they told me it wasn't my truck. and then charged me $600 to get it out of impound. i recently ran into that cop at a weird little bakery in highland park. it was all i could do not to shove my empanada in his face. |
^
Wow. So, it's not only me and some of my former associates. The LAPD is scary. Granted, they have difficult and dangerous jobs. The West Hollywood division(s)-- yikes. I'm trying to recall if the Rodney King beating and reaction riots were in 1992. I'm pretty sure that it was 1992. I've rarely felt so unsafe in my life. In the middle of the night (3am) I heard glass breaking just buildings away from that Sunset graveyard shift I worked Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I'm almost certain it must have been 1992. I'll google it. I left LA in '93 and have never been back. Highland Park was a nice area (old Hollywood, yes? Famous because it's where Mae West once lived, many miles South down Vine Street, but would turn into those gorgeous old mansions once you drove way down Vine, or would turn into that dump of Hollywood and Vine and if you drove way UP it? I think I remember that geography correctly.) I'm sorry your truck got stolen. Not at all surprised the cops were rude, unhelpful. 'To serve and protect' to me is as sacred, spiritually and ethically, of a vow as 'First do no harm'. I didn't realize you were an LA girl. No wonder you're so wise and tough :) |

re: cops - I have yet to ever have a cop actually help me when I needed it. In fact, some have been spectacularly unhelpful in various situations. So we should all join hands and sing that one special N.W.A. song! |
