If you had to pick just ONE from 'BTM'?

1990's 'Behind The Mask' is a pretty good album. :)

If you had to pick your fave, which song is it?

Mine is 'Back of My Mind'

ButterCookie 07-20-2010 06:43 AM

Behind the Mask or Save Me.

BTM has that wonderful spookiness about it without being ominous and Save Me just makes me want to jump and dance (wether it should or not)

macfan 57 07-20-2010 06:45 AM

Definitely, the title track...Behind The Mask.

One of Christine's best songs ever.

tilthefirefades 07-20-2010 07:14 AM

Save Me!

holidayroad 07-20-2010 07:57 AM

I'll also say 'Behind the Mask'. The album has many great songs, though!!!

Street_Dreamer 07-20-2010 08:23 AM

When It Comes To Love.

Save Me, Affairs of the Heart, In The Back Of My Mind & Skies the Limit are my favorites.

TrueFaith77 07-20-2010 11:55 AM

I know it's either Save Me or Behind the Mask . . . but I just have to go with "Hard Feelings" :o

I agree. That's my favorite. Rocks, has a hard, sinister edge. Very refreshing.

Save Me is my second favorite from the album.

Freedom! It ROCKS! :]

Save Me and Behind The Mask are definitely close runners up, though.

I've always found the mixture of the quality of songs on BTM to be quite intriguing. Everything seems to be really great, or gawd-awful turds. There's like no middle ground at all. For instance, I feel Stevie contributes one of the strongest songs of the album, (Freedom), while also bringing to the table what are arguably the album's worst songs. The same goes for the production on this album. While universally heavy-handed... that actually works in Christine's favor on Behind The Mask, while I think In The Back Of My Mind sounds utterly cheesy and over the top Halloween-y.

Heartboy 07-20-2010 05:04 PM

Nobody mentioned 'Love is Dangerous' That's a good one. It kinda has a country feel to it.

Yes, there are alot great songs. I love at the end of 'Save Me' when you can hear Stevie singing "Save Me....SAVE Me" LOL

'Do You Know' is a beautiful song.

I love the feeling of 'In the back of my mind' ...the harmonies are great & Stevie's voice is haunting in this song.:D

Me too. Freedom is great song;).

When The Sun Goes Down

The only time that Rick and Billy really put their personal stamp on FM. There should have been more of that happening.

Rick in particular and Billy to a lesser degree always seemed constrained.

Your comments are always a welcome addition! You are spot on with your assessment about the album. 'Affairs of the Heart' could have been a better song if it had a better lyric, but 'The Second Time' is an undeniable turd and a half.

Among 'Freedom', 'Behind the Mask', and 'Hard Feelings' -- it's Sophie's choice for me.

I definitely agree with all of that. I especially love the duets in Love Is Dangerous and Do You Know. They were throwbacks to an older, much simpler era in Fleetwood Mac.

I also agree with your summations of Stevie's backing vocals on various songs. She's terrific... actually, much better as a backing vocalist than she is a lead vocalist on this album.

I completely agree. Behind The Mask is easily in my top 5 Christine songs.

Save Me and Freedom are goodies as well.

UCYOURGYPC 07-22-2010 02:44 PM

I'd want to pick one from ea. writer (somewhat);

When The Sun Goes Down (pick up a tambourine, and blast this one, you'll have guarenteed fun)

Freedom (Stevie)
Behind The Mast (Christine)

This song might sound better if you're sailing.

Got No Home. ;)

Okay, so it wasn't actually on the album -- it was a demo that was inexcusably passed over for the album. Actually it was one of several BTM demo offerings by Rick that were rejected -- instead, they chose his weaker (IMO) Stand On The Rock.

I don't think that was of Rick's choosing. He offered good stuff, FM didn't want it.
From his King Of Hearts Press Kit:
"I wrote one group of songs for BEHIND THE MASK that were in a bluesy rock direction," Rick notes, "but that turned out not to be the direction of the album. Almost the same day I got the thumbs down from Fleetwood Mac for this kind of song ......."

Lindsey called the album 'generic', and maybe he had a point. But if they'd given Rick & Billy more free rein, it could have been much more distinctive, like When the Sun Goes Down.

So with that gripe off my chest, I'll also pick the title track. I loved dark and dangerous Chris. I wish she would have done more dark and dangerous over the years.

 Good one Viv. (Must be one of John's rare songs.)

"In the Back of My Mind" without question.

sjpdg 08-08-2010 01:54 AM

Toss up for me between "In The Back Of My Mind", "Freedom" and "Hard Feelings" but I think I'm gonna go with "Hard Feelings".

HollywoodSteve 08-09-2010 02:16 AM

"Skies The Limit". So upbeat, optimistic and uplifting.

chiliD 08-09-2010 11:48 AM

In The Back Of My Mind

And, vote #2 for Rick's "Got No Home"

Besides all the rhetoric about "not the direction of the album", blah, blah, blah. If you sequence "Got No Home" & "Intuition" into the album's running order (take out "Stand On The Rock" & "The Second Time"), they actually DO FIT the rest of the album's tunes...so Rick obviously was playing "politician" and toeing the "company line"....even though it was utter BS.

chazlightyear 08-09-2010 04:34 PM

'Do you know' is my favourite

Err actually having listened to it this morning for the first time in a long while i'm a bit torn between Do you know and Hard feelings:confused:

Madelow 08-19-2010 03:32 PM

Hello Chaz & all: I noticed something in reading your posts. While nobody seems to give the BTM cd much credit in FMs history, there are a variety of songs listed as individual favorites. An indication that a range of different styles offers something for everyone? I hesitated (for quite a while), before purchasing BTM. I wasn't quite sure if Rick & Billy were a good fit. Would Lindsey's guitar work & production skills (the absence of), result in subpar FM? When I finally picked it up a couple years later, i almost kicked myself! I love it, and would recommend it to any new listener of the Mac. Even today, I'm not sure I could pick a single favorite. I'm thinking we should start looking at BTM in a much brighter, more favorable, light! Thoughts, anyone?

AncientQueen 08-19-2010 07:23 PM

Don't kill me, but I like BTM much more than TITN. I rushed to the record store to buy TITN the morning it was available, was really exited - and hated it. The saccarin sweet borefest the godawful Mystified represents to the fullest still manages to be a sonic vision of hell for me - I'm pretty sure they have that track on repeat down there, probably shuffling with You and I....

I had many reservations about BTM with Lindsey gone and Mick talking stupid chauvinistic stuff like: "Christine helped producing the album and it was suprising to see that she is not just a pretty face!" (DOH!) and reluctantly bought it, just because I was a fan - and liked it from first listening.

Not so much ego, more band-feeling, imho earthier production and far better songs. I know that technically the production is far worse than Tango's, but I'm not a stereophile. Overall the atmosphere of the album is great. Christine wrote great songs and Rick's and Billy's contributions weren't too shabby either. Stevie wasn't herself at that time, in retrospect it is great that she did show up at all. I liked her stuff, compared to TITN she was making an effort.

My favrite songs are:
Do you know, Save me, Behind the mask, Freedom

I could have done without "Skies the Limit", as the first song on the album, it seems to be created as the bridge between TITN and BTM, repeating what made TITN nearly unbearable to listen to for me. I wanted a new beginning. BTM fully delivered that to me from the second song on and I have a soft spot for that album and that incarnation of FM in my heart.
