Your favorite stevie ''hidden gem'' album track

Ive only picked 3 songs that some fans might have forgotten about.

Straight back

When i see you again

The second time

Artemis 07-18-2010 04:05 PM

I think When I See You Again is one of Stevie's songs I WANT to forget about. Painful to listen to.

Anyhoo, Straight Back is a wonderful song. Really wish she would perform it live.

Dodfather 07-18-2010 04:34 PM

Out of those 3 - Straight Back, but I'd go for That's Alright...

SapphireSister 07-18-2010 07:25 PM

So funny, I don't fancy any of these songs so I didn't vote. ^^Add That's Alright and you have a clear winner.

TrueFaith77 07-18-2010 07:34 PM

I love the sound of Straight Back but I love the emotion of When I See You Again (plus Lindsey). OMG HOW DO I CHOOSE.

ETA: Just re-listened to them. I stand by the above, but When I See You Again made me cry (again), so. . . what am I to do?

tilthefirefades 07-18-2010 11:29 PM

Picked Straight Back because the other two are forgettable, and Straight Back rules. But, like others said, That's Alright is even better. It has possibly become my favorite on Mirage, beautiful lyrics.

louielouie2000 07-18-2010 11:39 PM

Straight Back will always be one of my all time favs, though I rarely seem to listen to Mirage. I'll always have a special place for this one... I first heard it in a plane flying over the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead... it was almost a spiritual experience!

i believe it.

as for that's alright... what makes it for me is the harmonizing background. wow. though i honestly dont' know if it would have been my pick.

APerfectLie 07-19-2010 12:37 AM

Straight Back for sure.

Musicman408 07-19-2010 07:23 AM

The vocal on WISYA is just..... not my favorite.

holidayroad 07-19-2010 07:33 AM

I love 'Straight Back'!! It's always been a favorite of mine. WISYA is okay, but Lindsey's vocal at the end saves it!! 'The Second Time' is one of Stevie's weakest songs, IMO.

Christopher 07-19-2010 11:12 AM

Voted 4 Straight Back. When Mirage was 1st released-this was the Stevie song I loved the most, But it has fallen to 3rd place of her Mirage songs all these years later.

I agree with most, "That Alright" is the true hidden gem. Great song (which contains a Stevie songwriting rarity-a Key change at the bridge before the chorus), Great Lyrics & Top Notch Vocal & Harmony.

wheart 07-19-2010 12:01 PM

this was tough because I do love all three of these songs! I voted for Straight Back because of it's sheer brilliance...when I first bought Mirage I played that song over and over and over. However, I do think The Second Time is one of Stevie's best songs! I know I'm in the majority here. LOL. The only reason I didn't vote for it is because the vocal is so lousy. I wish she had recorded that song pre or post klonopin. The song would have had much more power with an emotional vocal to match those wonderfully sad lyrics.

SapphireSister 07-19-2010 12:30 PM

WHATSUMATABABY BABY BABY BABY!!!!!!!!!!! :sorry:

nailatixela 07-19-2010 12:52 PM

Straight Back! It's my least favorite off Mirage from Stevie, but it's still an incredible song. "hours and hours of...waiting for YOOOOOOU" and can't forget "in the shadow of my shAAAADOW!" And I love Christine's harmonies on this track.

I don't hate WISYA or TST. I actually don't think it's possible for me to hate any stevie slow song. These 2 are on the bottom of that list (with BATB, landslide at the top)but if it's a simple, slow, sad song with her vocal...I can't hate it.

Let's see....two of Fleetwood Mac's all-time WORST songs put up against a throwaway song off of Mirage? I don't see a "gem" in the trio. And, not in any stretch of the imagination is any of the three one "in the rough".

Where's that barfing smiley?

Maybe she should incorporate it in the next mac tour setlist!

I hope she does. I think it would work beautifully as a show closer or as a Landslide replacement.

Straight Back

Heartboy 07-20-2010 07:01 PM

'Garbo' :)

starshine 07-20-2010 07:43 PM

Well to me of the 3 songs I picked Straight Back...its always been a favorite of mine. When I see you again....it repeats too much/boring/personally I like the outtake much better with her AND Lindsey at the end. Even though this is the version she preferred. I think outtake is better. On The Second Time...its ok but kinda boring song....it just doesn't stand out....its just kinda there......Some have mentioned 'Thats Alright'....the LP version itself is boring but those outtakes are wonderful really. Its funny how the outtakes or alternates always shine better than the original versions. Maybe its because they aren't released.....who knows but I tend to like them more then the released versions thats for sure......anyway, IMO ........its all good no matter what you like or love.....theres no wrong answer really.....

Hawkeye 07-20-2010 08:16 PM

not really a balanced poll at all. Straight Back crushes the other 2. I don't see how Straight Back got lumped in with WISYA and The Second Time.

TOTALLY agree!!!!! One of the greatest hidden gems EVER, right up there with "Ricky!!"

Her vocal delivery is not very appealing. And the lyrics -- trying to capture the landside vibe-- are awkward and strained. Even though its trying to be, it's just not an accessible song. It will never make my best of list, but it holds a place in Stevie's cannon of songs as being very unusual....BABY!

The only part of the song that is palatable is the ending portion, with Lindsey singing solo.

APerfectLie 07-21-2010 08:11 PM

I think Freedom should have been added to the list. It is my favorite song on Behind The Mask. Straight Back is one of my all time favorites tho. I must say I do love WISYA and The Second Time. They aren't my favorite songs of hers, but when I do randomly listen to them they still brighten my day. Call me strange.

Agreed. Freedom is an all-time fav... I love the anger and passion!

Agreed. Straight Back is another all-time fav! I love the spooky, mystical air about it... it's no Sisters Of The Moon or Gold Dust Woman, but it's not far off!

Agreed! I've always found beauty in WISYA and The Second Time because they're true works of art IMO. Both songs are kinda about hitting the bottom of all bottoms... and you can hear the pain, heartbreak, and total despair in her vocals and lyrics.

The lyrics to Freedom are certaintly angry and passionate but the vocal is lifeless and lacks anything remotely close to anger, passion or inspiration. I've always hated the way she sang that song, from the very first time I heard it. In my opinion, that poor vocal performance ruined what could have been a shining Nicks moment.

I chose 'Straight Back' but think 'Kick It' is really a "doubly-hidden gem" as it was on her least successful solo cd up til that time, and was the first of her solo albums not to have a vinyl format release, so it's just kind of wasted near the end of the cd, which maybe some people didn't get all the way through!
I always thought 'KI' had some of her most interesting lyrics, and a kind of wisdom about it that was under appreciated.
Have always really liked the sound, the recording, the vocal, just about everything about 'Kick It'

first choice would be That's Alright, but Kick It is a great second choice ! "well i can see you're waited for... all over you"
classicly oblique Stevie lyrics

Welcome to The Ledge, ye of one post! Stick around... They go quickly, you'll be up into the 2 and 3 digits before you know it!
I have to say the line you quoted:
"I can see you're waited for all over you" is one of my favorite lines SN has written. It's so everything-- observant, ironic, dry, bitter, hilarious, a severe put down, an appreciative observation, a sad realization that the affair is doomed- to me, it's a great piece of lyric writing.

I also think 'Kick It' is an overlooked gem. I, too, love that sarcastic jab she delivers in those lyrics (which are easily overlooked too!). She packs a lot of attitude in those lines, as if to say " You're a self-important egotisical ass."

thx for the welcome nikolaj. much appreciated. now help me decode the " i'm waited for in egypt, it's just something i must do" my guess is touring, but not a big market for mystic blond chanteuses in muslim countries

jrpjr 07-24-2010 09:25 AM

i think "i sing for things" is one of stevies best songs..its simple and pleasent to listen to..think it may have made a top 20 if released as a single in its day...agreed.."thats alright" also another gem

jrpjr 07-24-2010 09:34 AM

oooops...SORRY!! didnt see the top part of this thread where u CLEARLY asked out of the three songs..."straight back" loved it the first time i heard it and still do...matter of fact im going to throw it on right now....this is clearly classic stevie writing "...and you will find while in the wind something that you've lost.."
