Stevie Summer Tour: Will She Perform NEW Material?
Thought this would make for fun speculation. Stevie is recording a new album. At least 6-7 tracks have been written and the music recorded (if not vocals). Stevie is going on tour this August, potentially waaaay before any new material is actually released (couldn't hurt to drop a single, Stevie!). So, will she use this upcoming tour to test out, and get fans familiar with, new material that is intended for the new album??? Or is she too afraid of alienating fair-weather fans and will stick to her usual greatest-hits setlist???
I'm curious to find out people's predictions. |
I could totally see her doing it. I'm sure she's just as excited about it as we are and plus, she's done this before with new songs hasn't she?
|
This is a good question, I really think she will change up her setlist & perhaps will add some new materiel this time around, esp after touring with F/Mac 09 she seemed almost tired to death of singing the same old songs night after night, which is totally understandable. She is near the 3/4 mark of her career as it stands now, so she's got nothing to lose & with this new CD & Movie in the making just goes to show Stevie is defiantly not done with yet:blob1:

Well, she sang (albeit just a verse) the New Orleans song last year. I could definitely see her singing ONE new song this summer... it'd be a great way to drum up interest in her new album. Probably why she's doing this brief summer tour: to let her fans know she's got a new album on the way.

I was leaning towards yes but I went with no. It wouldn't surprise me if she'd throw in just one song but I doubt we'll get anymore than that. We all know Stevie's views of playing "the new songs" and her perception of the audience's reaction to them. Her overall impression is that nobody wants to hear the new stuff (although she did play a lot of new songs on the TISL tour). I think her reasoning would be that nobody's even heard these songs yet so of course they're not going to know them or want to hear them. This, of course, is far from the truth but I believe it's what Stevie will probably be thinking. Then again, she may just love these new songs so much and be so proud of them that she'll be compelled to play a few and not give a **** what anyone thinks. We shall see...
|
She did new stuff on the Bella Donna (White-Winged Dove) tour also that most people hadn't heard before. Keeping in mind the fact that that was 25+ years ago and she's very different now I sincerely believe there's a good chance she'll give us a taste.

Stevie's way too much of a nervous nelly to try out new material before a record gets put out.
And frankly, too many of the casual fans sit on their hands while she sings songs they don't know. And I *know* she sees it and hears the polite applause from "fans" when that happens. |

I think she very well could try out a new song. Some of the current players are joining her on the tour, plus she is playing small venues, most are in casinos.
I do believe she premiered Stand Back at the US Festival, which wasn't quite out yet. |
I'm in the middle on this one,But I hope she surprize us.

Call it wishful thinking...I voted "Yes"!

 I think she'll do one or two, just to shake things up a little. A preview to test the waters. And I guess she'd probably choose not to do what she considers the best songs from the upcoming album either. She'll save those for the next tour. She'll just do one or two songs to get buzz going, since she knows Dave has already gotten curiousity whetted. Or she might do one new song and one rarely (or never) performed one from her back catalog. Michele |
I voted "No" in the hopes she'll prove me wrong.
But I also think she's set in her ways. |
Stevie likes to rehearse for 3 months for her tours. And then she always plays the same things. With the tour starting in less than a month and there have been no tour rehearsal's, do you honestly think her songset will change at all?

I dont think she'll perform any songs, maybe a mention though-

I voted YES and I mean specifically for her first West Coast dates, to see if it sparks interest in her getting any more bookings by not doing her standard show. I think if even non-capacity crowds leave enthused, especially by 2 new showstoppers- 3 would be better-, it may help her get some more dates. Some 'circuit' (if that term still even exists, for a chain of sheds with common investors in various states)- the Westbury Music Fair in NY and the old Oakdale in CT, were 2, years ago that come to mind) --meaning, a small group of investors may take a chance and book a dozen shows of a revitalized Stevie in smaller venues they deal with. It doesn't look like a major promoter is involved, as of yet.
If crowds keep being smallish, as they were getting to be on her last solo tour, ticket prices are still too high, by the time she gets to Atlantic City NJ and the MGM Grand in CT, I think she could cut the new songs, why bother, she only got 5 dates out of the whole thing, and any new songs could be gone. Something's changed now in Stevieland, when she can't get more than 5 dates booked, after all the time passed since the first dates were announced. But this is a cautious summer, booking-wise. Another singer I like had 17 dates, most very successful, but the star also dropped the high asking price considerably, negotiated on the gate, and so most ticket prices were $50 less for top seats in many cities than had been on previous tours. This singer went all out with an entirely new, and expensive show with a huge band, and studied voice for months retraining the pipes, before hiring the band, and by opening night, was singing better than in a dozen years. Then, the singer stopped after 17 dates, had well more than a dozen glowing reviews and great word of mouth, and now is slowly booking dates for August and September, only 4 so far. But that's still 21 dates total, to SN's five. And their first dates were announced at about the same time. My guess is the major difference is that SN hasn't come down on her price. |

It occurs to me that Stevie likely may be in magnificent voice on these upcoming dates, having sung and resung the songs for her new album, and singing regularly as she has been for several months in the studio. Her voice is likely to very strong, the more you use it, the better it is, I believe. And you know she's been wanting to have the upcoming album showcase her in great voice, so I think she should be ready to really impress everyone in a huge way. She's all broken in!

Wow. Saturday morning and the "yes"s are winning! i'm amazed. Some compelling arguments. The only thing that actually does make me think she MIGHT be doing material IS the few tour dates. As if it were a testing-the-waters tour. But on the other hand, I really don't know anything about that stuff.

I went with no, its out of her comfort zone. On the other hand, this isnt a full on tour (not yet) just a few shows here and there. I'm hoping for 1 new song, but I learned long ago not to get my hopes up...

I'd like to think Stevie would perform one or two new songs, but I think it's extremely unlikely. Remember she did a few live shows in the latter part of 2000 and at one concert in September of that year, she commented that the "new" album (Trouble In Shangri-La) was finished. However, even though all the songs had been written and recorded, she still didn't attempt any of them on stage.
The latest album isn't finished - depending on who you listen to, either half of it is done or else it's close to completion - so it seems probable that not even a tracklisting has been decided as yet. There is also the other question of whether Stevie has laid down her vocals or not - I'm wondering if that photo of her listening to the rough mixes was on the last night or perhaps earlier during the recording sessions? I'm also curious about David Wild's (Rolling Stone writer) comments about the songs being "deeply personal" and featuring "lots of ghosts (and) vampires" if the vocals haven't been laid down as yet. It's possible he's listened to the demos as well or perhaps read some lyric sheets, but he was commenting on the "work in progresss" so that would suggest that Stevie has perhaps recorded at least some of the vocals. Is anyone able to clarify the situation? |

Stevie has said that you can't do new songs because the people won't know them and will just sit there. She then usually tells the story of the shows the Mac did in 1976 where they did some of the songs from "Rumours" and how people just didn't know the songs so they didn't go over very well.
Stevie really has no sense of time. At that point there were still a lot of people going to see them that were fans of "Hypnotized" and "Oh Well" etc. So they didn't want to hear these songs by these new people they didn't know. At the same time Stevie did "Gold & Braid" on the Bella Donna tour and that song was never released and it seemingly went over very well. History tells us that she won't do anything new because Stevie is still very much living in the '70's. However I have a feeling she might really shake things up at these shows. |
The poll is a TIE right now!! :blob2:

Shoot me for saying it if you like but whatever.
On their tour of the UK which finished last week, Blondie had a split set. They did many of the hits, a few album tracks that weren't singles, some solo tracks off Debbie's Necessary Evil album and about 6 brand new tracks off their forthcoming album and the new ones went down phenomenally well. I know that the 'hardcore' fans at the concert I went to were making up the front row along with myself, because they're friends of mine and we queued together. However, when the band played the new material the rest of the crowd behind us went wild. They completely and utterly loved it. I really think it'd do Stevie's new album a ton of extra good if she did play a few of the new songs as long as she introduced them, telling the audience about the album. That way they'll get excited and share her, and the big time fan's, excitement. She can do it and pull it off and we all know that :) |
After reading and thinking the last couple of days,I had to breakdown and vote, and I voted No.Like said she probably feel upset with the audiences reaction after playing new tunes,But I hope I'm wrong and she will sneak them on to the setlist.I rather hear the new tunes then the cover tunes .Also I hope she will shed some light on these projects that are floating around on Twitter and other sources.
I'm bringing my friends to the Connecticut show like I've been doing for the last few tours. They loved the last Stevie/FM concerts .I think they would have no problem if Stevie trys out her new tunes.I will print out the setlist if it comes on here or Nicksfix to give to my friends before the show. |
