Favorite Cover Song
Its pretty amazing, but not too hard to believe that it was so easy to fill this poll up. I tried to stick with just the covers that have been released on either CD or DVD. Thats why I made an other. That would include your At Lasts and Red River Valleys etc.
One of the best performances I feel Stevie has given in recent memory cover or not is Face the Promise. And this might be the fifth time Im saying this, but really it was more like Stevie was playing a new rocking song of hers as opposed to a cover since it was such an obscure Bob Segar song. For any big Segar fans out there its another cover, but to me its no different then if she had played Docklands, Its Only Love, Cry Wolf or Sometimes its a Bitch in concert. If not for Face the Promise I would've picked I Need To Know, or Woodstock, which I didn't include but I really wish she would do that one again. I think I might be in the minority, but Stevie's insistance to include at least one cover (sometimes way more) in all her sets doesnt bother me. People complain that she doesnt try new things in her set, but when she pulls something liek Face the Promise out of no where we hear "Oh you have so many of your own songs you could be playing" Rock and Roll was also really exciting initially although I wish she would retire it now. My first choice for Stevie's new tour would be for her to playt never before or rarely played songs of her own, but if not I'd support her decision to include a new cover. BUT if I see ****ing Crash is wasting a spot in the set I might protest going to Verona! |
Didn't like it live, but Crash sounded really hot on Soundstage. It's not my favorite though.

Although I truly love most of them, it was really a toss up between 'I Need To Know' and 'Circle Dance' to me...I went with INTK for sentimental reasons - she's been doing it so long in concert, it's practically no longer a TP song...BUT I absolutely love CD too...
|
OH! and what CD or DVD is 'Face The Promise' on? I didn't think that was officially released on anything??? Am I behind the times on something?
|
I absolutely love Circle Dance. I hadn't heard it until the Soundstage aired- and it was my favorite song!
|
I voted for Circle Dance but I need to make this very clear - I'm not voting for the Sound Stage version w/ Vanessa Carlson. It was 100x better when she did it solo on the Gold Dust tour. She changed it a lot for Sound Stage and it lost so much IMO. Anyway Circle Dance solo is nothing short of perfection. She made that song her's while still honoring Bonnie as I mentioned before. Just an all out fabulous cover full of emotion and beautiful music. And the lyrics ring so true to me.

The list should have included ' Needles and Pins,' a great live duet with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It was released as a single - I have it! I would have voted for that one. That should have also been on her box set (along with many others). And...when did she sing Woodstock?

Or Kid Country,as I see him. |
I picked "I need to know" it was my fave since the HBO special.
The others listed ,like recent tour could be not on this next tours set list ,probably wont put up a fuss about if they were not played. |
Free Fallin'. Would be great to hear her do it live as well!
|
The underrated "I still Miss Someone" is my vote. My second fav track from that album.
|
Free Falling is the best. Wish she'd do it live.

My fave Stevie cover HAS to be At Last 0 that's why I voted 'Other'. I was blown away when I heard it. I hadn;t heard her sing like that in years!! I do love I Need to Know though, especially the version performed at Gatorville with Tom. I do not understand why Stevie brought Vanessa Carlton in on Circle Dance. Vanessa adds nothing to the song and it's much, much better when Stevie does it solo. Also, the lyric, for me anyway, seems much more suited to a mature woman, and Vanessa's voice seems too girly for it. I'm shocked that anyone has picked I Still Miss Someone! For me, that's the worst cover she's recorded and just does not work. Also, what was Face The Promise relased on? I've only heard very low quality live versions so I'd love to have one a bit more cleaned up... |
Each to their own of course, I really love singing along to Free Fallin', so I'm going give it the thumbs UP too!!! I chose Crash as my fav cover song ..

I decided to vote for 'I Still Miss Someone' (though 'Cry Wolf' from the same cd I'd like even more). All the votes for 'INTN' kind of worry me, should it get back to her! "I was right, it stays!" Personally, I think she's performed 'I Need To Know" enough.
I knew for years there were a lot of 'Cry Wolf' haters, I always loved it and found out in the past year that there were a good number of Ledgies (well, maybe ten!) who posted they liked 'Cry Wolf' a lot, too. Yet, I'd also enjoy a live 'I Still Miss Someone! I have to say a solo version of 'Woodstock' appeals to me a LOT, not with Kid (of 44?) Rock! PS- Googled him, he's 39, not 44. |
Maybe the following should be another thread, or already is-- but songs Stevie should cover. My first vote would go to 'Somebody To Love' by Jefferson Airplane. I know it is Grace's song, but it's such a good song and no name act that I can think of has ever covered it. The thing about remakes is I think they should be songs that haven't been done to death, like so many acts have covered 'Rock and Roll'.
I once heard a dance version of 'Somebody To Love', but I don't think it went far and can't recall the singer. But, I'd like to see Stevie pay homage to the Fritz San Francisco roots that she and Lindsey share by doing a song from that era that they were a part of. Stevie on 'Piece of My Heart' could also be great if she saaang out on it, but it's been done by a lot of singers, so 'Somebody To Love' could be a great cover song for this (short!?!) August tour. Ya know she's gonna do a cover! INTN must go! Don't encourage her not to change! Vote for 'Just Like A Woman' if you have to! :) |
Oh, I want to add that I did like 'I Need To Know' for many years, my favorite was the extended version she did when Les Dudek was in her band on a tour circa 1990. Les did a longer guitar solo on it. I know a lot of people didn't think that was a great band, but I did. She also had along Heart's guitar player, and Michael E (can't spell it) as her musical conductor, Cat Grey on keyboards who I thought was very memorable, a good sax player and a good 'Talk to Me' that tour, it was a larger band than usual for her, I believe. There's the excellent filmed by Peter Bogdonovich version of 'I Need To Know' on Tom's dvd set where Stevie sings lead vocal, it's on Stevie's Soundstage dvd, and she's done it on many or most of her solo tours. Enough.
I also like 'Crash' very much on Soundstage, but I think it's time for her to stop performing it. She went all out for it on the recording, I found the production of it to be very 'Tusk-esque'. (meaning great!) 'Crash' went to radio as a single, and the song, though the recorded version was an excellent production, just didn't do anything, so I think it's time to move on from it. There are many other cover songs that could be as good or better. "Circle Dance' was ok but not really worthy of her, sorry for the Circle Dance lovers out there, but I find it rather a snooze. I did like it best with Henley on the 'Two Voices' tour, it was just so great hearing her do so much new material - to her/for her. (Circle Dance, So You Wanna Be A Rock and Roll Star, Hotel California, New York Minute, Last Worthless Evening, and a proper Leather and Lace, all with Don, plus we had a couple of others in her solo set that, at the time, hadn't been performed tons. Loved that concert!!) 'Free Falling' starts off slow, but I love when she changes key mid way through it, or a tad past mid-way and sings in her upper register on about the sixth repetition of 'Free Falling' (Free Falling! 'Ohhh I want to glide out over Mulholland.... I'm gonna free fall out into nothing, I'm gonna leave, I'm gotta (?) leave this worrr-llld for a whiii-le") -- those higher, rougher, belted, longer-held notes are what most appeal to me in her voice, so her 'Free Falling' gives me chills when she gets into that heavy Stevieness that it needed more of from the start. Though too long, 'Somebody Stand By Me' (technically, another 'cover' song) I like because her voice, in much of it, is magnificent. She sang the hell out of it; but I feel sure that it needed one chorus omitted earlier-on in the song, for that final chorus not to be 'again?'-- I think it's one of her strongest recorded vocals ever, actually. She's singing on it. |
Stevie Nicks- The Terrell Owens of Fleetwood Mac
Apparently me rather dying then making you stop is the meaning love >>>Hawkeye's initial message in this thread ended. In case Hawkeye doesn't wish to reply to me, I am going to Google the f*ck out of both Terrell Owens and that quote I bolded, because it perhaps may help me more than anything in sixteen years regarding a too-soon death. I am more than intrigued by it, and not even thinking of what the Stevie Nicks connection to the quote is yet. "Apparently me rather dying then making you stop is the meaning love"...Oh, what the f*ck does this mean and why I am reading it today, so close to the day of 16 years ago? |

Thanks so much for the answer, Hawkeye.
His Wikipedia page was really interesting! I do have to admit, yes, I was ignorant, I had no idea who he was. Thanks for clearing all that up. Turns out I only had to look at the Street Angel booklet, which was also from about this time, sixteen years ago. And 'Kick It' was one of my favorite cuts on the entire cd, even. Thank you, again. |
I also voted 'other' too....awhile ago. I can handle some of the covers but I really also don't like 'Free Fallen' ....its one of those songs that does nothing for me really. I also don't like her vocal on it either. Don't like 'Somebody Stand By Me 'by Sheryl Crow...ugh....I think one of her best songs is her duet with Tom Petty on 'Insider' thats probably my favorite of all. I wish that could've been on her box set but its Tom's song....so I guess I see why its not on hers but to me its better than Stop Draggin even though Tom did write both of them......I like 'Cry Wolfe' as well....one of my favorites off of Mirror.....anyway, its all good. Theres nothing wrong with liking what you like or love......its awesome!!!
As a side note....I'm going to DTE/PK to see Steve Miller & Peter Frampton tomorrow night....should be COOL. I like both but not ever seen them live....$20.00 Pavillion tickets can't all be that bad huh!!!.........anway, just some thoughts!!!!! Have a great July 4th everyone!!!:D:thumbsup: |
