Singers/bands in bad moods @ concerts ????
Hi everyone, i was just wondering if anyone would like to relate any stories of concerts they've been to (say in the last 5 years), where its been blatantly obvious there's been friction in the band - (maybe an argument or something just before they came on stage) and its totally noticeable or there's just not a good vibe. My own personal experience was at the Eagles concert in Belfast last year. Something had obviously happened backstage b'cos when they came out every other member seemed to put on a brave face but Joe Walsh was in a terrible mood. For the first half of the concert he didn't interact wit the audience like the way the others did, he messed up his lines in "guilty of the crime", and missed his guitar cue. However after the interval he was fine, he picked up and got into it a bit moreso. It didn't spoil the night for me and have to say the band exceeded my expectations but i was just wondering if anyone else ever had a similar experience. - (Makes me think of how the audience would have reacted in the Fleetwood Mac shows (i think in New Zealand), years ago before my time, when they all weren't gettin on and Lindsey mimicked Stevies twirling and then walked over and kicked her !!???) ....

I gotta come out and say it: I seriously wished that thing of Lindsey imitating Stevie on stage had been caught on camera.
That aside, I can't think of anything, but at my Unleashed show last June, I was having a big problem with a lady in front of me, who got drunk before the show, decided to take out her Sidekick, and "take pictures" by waving her phone around directly in my field of vision. I was ready to snap it over my knee, but other than that, I never saw any of that. |

There was a Kings of Leon show fairly recently, one of the major festivals in the UK I think it was, where Caleb got pretty p.o. at the crowd not being as into it as he felt they should have been. There was professional video of it, I think, and someone took the liberty of editing it into this video, which I personally find hysterical.
The thing about this is while I don't like the idea of band members dressing down huge crowds of people, especially when it's such a generalized statement, when it comes to people only showing up to Kings of Leon shows to hear "Sex on Fire", I kinda agree. Oops. |
I wish I could have been a fly on the wall backstage in Madison on the SYW tour in '04, after Ray Lindsey delivered guitar after guitar to Lindsey on stage that didn't meet his satisfaction. The tension was pretty thick.
Lets hope Lindsey didn't slam the guitar over Ray's poor head, even though we know that Lindsey often resorts to violence when things don't go his way. |

Mick: What are ya?
Christine: I'm a talented, beautiful lady! She's also rat-arsed. |

Now, I saw another bit where Mick is taking pictures, comes across a drawing some random girl is making, and then runs away like he was majorly disturbed. What was it on that pad? |

Cyndi Lauper stands out for me. Some years ago (maybe six?) she played here in CT, Joan Jett was her opening act. The crowd was nearly hostile towards Joan (really, more towards her band) but Joan remained a pro, did her set, and said as she left the stage, almost sadly, 'I hope you all really enjoy Cyndi'-- Cyndi came out and was in incredible voice, but seemed irritated by sound issues (though the sound was great, maybe she couldn't hear herself as she was used to on stage) and she's a fun and funny performer- but she got real irritated with several rowdy fans (Joan would have liked it, I think!) and threw a big temper tantrum when she claimed someone threw (blew?) a spitball up on stage at her, and from Row 2, that's not what it looked like to me, at all. "That's it! I've had it! I'm in no mood for this' yelling really out of control-- this was about 20 minutes after she'd balled out someone in the audience for not letting her finish her long, spoken intro to 'True Colours'- about a friend of hers who'd died of AIDS. Seeing Cyndi go off on the audience was really unsettling, because she'd been singing so strongly and really had been well-received, but things got mixed up. She thought someone was telling HER to shut up during her 'True Colors' intro when it was a girl telling a rowdy guy to 'shut up'- "Yeah, ok, so my friend died, haha, really funny" and then sang the song with a big chip on her shoulder. It was near the show's end when she threw down the mic and went ballistic and refused to finish singing 'Time After Time' (her final song) I thought she was really unprofessional, about the alleged spitball. Chalk it up to a bad night, I still like her.
She returned, shaken, for a 2 minute encore of 'Hey Now' but never introduced her excellent band and a lot of the audience felt like she'd turned on them, when it was really only one guy being pesky and she balled out 5000 people! Bad nights happen. |
Ha! so funny you say that... because, of course, at a concert (also) six years ago (also) in New England, this happened. Maybe she was on edge a smidge?

I saw Jethro Tull in Worcester, MA sometime in the early eighties. It was big arena show. I'm still have no idea what happened, but just about an hour into the show, it just abrubtly ended. Lights come up. No announcements were made, no goodbyes. The band just disappeared from the stage. Everyone in the audience were stunned and confused. 'What? It's over?? It can't be!" I always wonder what kind of drama percipitated it. It was a huge slap in the face to fans.

Lindsey Buckingham, 1993 Phoenix, Arizona
So angry at the audience for talking throughout his show he gave them the finger(those jerks up in the balcony). |
Just a few weeks ago, Jethro Tull, Jones Beach.
Procal Harum was the opening act, and most people (including myself) only know 2 songs from them, namely Conquistador and A Whiter Shade of Pale. Some people on whatever-they-call-the-floor there (it was once open water, but it got boarded up) and myself (I was in the last tier of seating, way up in the nosebleeds) were yelling at them to do those 2 songs, but they seemed to purposely wait till the end of their set to even do those 2 songs. |
Most acts (especially ones with only one or two hits) backload their set like that.

There's a reason why Lindsey doesn't play "Go Your Own Way" to start off his solo show (he made humorous reference to this during his '93 shows) |

I could picture her doing that. I recall when I saw Tull I shouted at them to do Bungle in the Jungle, but they never did it. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I was in the nosebleeds of a stadium-seating ampitheater. |

Next time, bring a megaphone and vuvuzula. You'll get your song. |

In my youth, I liked his 'Let Love Rule' cd quite well, so rebought it not long ago (it got left behind in LA) and got the deluxe 20th Anniversary edition, and it left me cold. Don't know if it was the mastering or what, but the title song just sounds so drawn out and dull, when back in the 80s, it sounded great to me. And the bonus cd that came with it, 'Let Love Rule Live' doesn't sound so hot, either. The bonus tracks on Disc One- ehhh... But back in '89, I thought he was good, though I also felt, quite derivative, but didn't let that stop me from thinking he could be an enduring rock star. Maybe he accomplished that, but it seems more like he just stopped his career. Now I just don't hear much to like in a lot of his music, and think perhaps that he just had the right image at the right time to 'make it' in the industry. Could be he lacked focus make a statement of his own, beyond his influences, who seem to me to be part Lennon, part Jagger, part Hendrix (with maybe a little Al Green and Tina Turner thrown in, too). Great, now I'm feeling guilty and will have to replay that entire 2cd set in case I'm wrong. |
Back in '74 I saw the Eric Burdon Band open for Blue Oyster Cult. It wasn't The Animals, but Eric played some dramatically rearranged (heavy rock) versions of a couple of Animals tunes to open his set..."Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" & "It's My Life" (oh, by the way, Alvin Taylor, Bob Welch's drummer on French Kiss was Eric's drummer). The crowd seemed to really dig it (the first four or five rows gave him standing O's both numbers), but for some weird reason, he just curtly said, "Ok, if you don't like my singing, maybe you like his, instead" and then introduced blues legend Jimmy Witherspoon who came out from the wings and as he was walking toward center stage, Eric just literally THREW the microphone at Jimmy from about 10 feet away. Witherspoon sang blues standards the rest of the set (about 45 minutes). Eric didn't even come out to acknowledge the audience when the rest of his band & Witherspoon took their bows.
Half hour later, Blue Oyster Cult hit the stage...they were great....at the time, they were the LOUDEST band I'd ever heard in concert. (later to be overshadowed by Quiet Riot, then even later by Cheap Trick)...this was a couple of years BEFORE "Don't Fear The Reaper". |

One of my most favorite ladies in the world, one Tori Amos, has been to known to have a fit at audience members from time to time, but it's invariably due to crappy audience behavior, not her or her crew messing up or anything. They range from just a casual "f*ck you" or "f*ck off" spoken in a conversational tone in response to some dumb fan screaming out song requests while she's trying to talk to her flat out booting you out of the show for being disrespectful.
The most recent I remember hearing about is when she kicked two girls in the front row out of a San Diego show for moving around too much, talking loudly & taking photos of each other while Miss T was trying to play. Here's video of it, she stops the song and yells at about 2:28. That's not my favorite, though. These are: 1999, on the 5 1/2 Weeks tour in Vegas, where she shoots the bird at a couple of jackhats in the front row who were being really disrespectful while she was playing "The Waitress," and orders them to "eat my [body part censored for any young'uns reading this]" all without missing a beat, because she's awesome like that. Oh, and it was recorded for posterity because it was a PPV special! Outburst starts at about 6:30. She believes in peace, bitch. She also yelled the same thing at a drunk guy in the audience at a Massachusetts show, because he was carrying on while she was trying to play "Winter," which she had just dedicated to a girl that had recently passed away. And my other two favorites, which I have no video for, only bootleg mp3s somewhere: - some drunk woman is being annoying during "The Waitress" in Buffalo (again! Why is everyone annoying during this epic song?), and Tori's like, "Hey, you. Lady! HEY! HEY, LADY! LADY IN THE WHITE SHIRT! DO YOU F*CKING MIND? CAN YOU JUST SIT DOWN FOR FIVE SECONDS? JUST FOR FIVE. F*CKING. SECONDS?" - some complete wastes of skin are yelling "show us your tits!" at her while she's trying to talk. She just stops what she's saying and remarks, "All right, boys, I'll do that just as soon as you drop your pants and show us your c*cks," and then goes back to what she was doing. I love her. |
I saw Elton John in Dublin in May 2006 and, although I really enjoyed the concert, he wasn't really in top form. He said he wouldn't tour anymore and just seemed generally a little lacklustre. I learned later that Lestat had just closed, and fans speculated that he was upset about that. The audience really didn't help, though -- they were like zombies the entire way through. I think it was this concert that left me with my abiding hatred of fully seated rock n roll shows -- it sucked the life right out of this one for me.

I am one of a very few people who actually liked Lestat. I saw it twice! |
I saw Jethro Tull a couple weeks ago in Atlantic City. The show was fun, but they started over an HOUR late and only played a little over an hour. The only two "Hits" they played were Aqualung and Locomotive Breath (which were the last two songs of the night. A lot of people were not happy with the show as we walked out including some long time fans.
