Trouble in Shangri-la ~ Expanded Version/iMix

As I often do, I made up a new track listing for Trouble in Shangri-la, incorporating several official extra songs, as well as some soundtrack songs which truly paved the Road to Shangri-la for Stevie. I like to do this to freshen up the songs from time to time. Yes, to the dismay of some, I've added even more Sheryl Crow to the collection.

I left off a few superfluous songs ("Lay Down Your Arms", "Let Me Count The Ways"), as well as songs that are clearly demos and not fully-produced tracks, with the exception of "Sweet Girl", which not only sounds pretty complete but also is an important song in Stevie's songwriting at the time.

I have done another iMix, The Road to Shangri-la which includes the demos of the era, including "Space Needle", "Annabel Lee", "Not Make Believe" and others, and will post it on here later. Also, a Stevie-Only version of Say You Will.

All tracks are the original album versions except when noted, like "Planets of The Universe", which uses the Extended Album Version which contains extra verses and choruses.

that's a platinum record right there, Mike! Love it!

mikebise 06-03-2010 03:42 PM

Thanks! I almost added in the rest of Stevie's Boston songs, but wanted it to feel like a complete album. The AOL 2003 version of "Landslide" can be substituted if one chooses to.

My next project is a huge iMix of Stevie's work from 1995-20o9. But, I guess with songs like Stevie's duet on "Strong Enough" and "Gold Dust Woman" (Live From Central Park 1999), I'd have to bill it:

"Now! With Even MORE Added Sheryl Crow!" ;)

Does anyone have an mp3 of the extended Planets of the Universe? I had it, but now I can't seem to find it anywhere...

Yes, you will be severely prosecuted by the undercover officers that monitor these boards disguising themselves as Stevie fans.

Artemis, Stevie wrote the melody and lyrics by herself (Sheryl the final music), and Stevie sings back-up on it throughout, plus the final lines are sung loudly by Stevie. So, I really love it, not just for Stevie's words, but her singing on it as well. The music's very Sheryl, so, if you hate her...

Aside from the back-ups when Sheryl is singing lead, the lyrics in parentheses are strictly Stevie solo:

"You're Not The One"
Late last night I told you
I cannot do this; I cannot hold you
I'm about to be gone
There is no choice, now
It cannot be done
'Cause you're not the one
(You're not the one)

I wish I could change the way I feel
I wish I could just get real
I wish I could love you the way you love me
But it cannot be done
'Cause you're not the one

(No, baby, I never lie)
You're not the one
(Undecided and mystified)
You're not the one
(Out of control, I cannot deny)
You're not the one
(No, baby, I never lie)

(Please accept my apology)

I never meant for you to see this
I never meant for you to fall in love
(You're not the one)
No, I never meant for you to fall in love
'Cause you're not the one
(You're not the one)

(No, baby, I never lie)
You're not the one
(Undecided and mystified)
You're not the one
(Out of control, there is no deny)
You're not the one
(Ooh, baby, I never lie)
You're not the one

(Tread softly, I never could)
Just not the one
(Keep listening, I thought I did)
You're not the one
("I love you" I never said)
You're just not the one
I cannot pretend
You're not the one
You're not the one
(Please accept my apology)
You're not the one
You're just not the one

Baby, last night I told you
(Tread softly, I never could)
I can't do this, I can't hold you
(Keep listening, I thought I did)
I wish I could change how I feel
("I love you" I never said)
But I can't pretend
(I cannot pretend)
No, no,
(You're not the one)

Baby, last night I told you
(I never lie)
I can't do this, I can't hold you
(Ooh, undecided and mystified)
I wish I could change how I feel
(Out of control, I cannot deny)
But I cannot deny
(Ooh, baby, I never lie)
(You're not the one)

(Tread softly, I never could)

APerfectLie 06-04-2010 12:38 AM

Isn't there some other song, I want to say it was China Doll, that was supposed to be on TISL? However, I swear that there is NO WAY that the demo of China Doll that has leaked is from the TISL era.

APerfectLie 06-04-2010 12:39 AM

Oh, and what about Have No Heart? Am I the only one who ****ing loves it?

mikebise 06-04-2010 06:45 AM

You're probably thinking of "Chanel, Chanel". Yes, "China Doll" is from way earlier in Stevie's career.

If you read my intro to the track listing, I'm doing a Road to Shangri-la listing, which includes the demos for Trouble in Shangri-la, like "Have No Heart", "Chanel, Chanel", "Space Needle" and more of Stevie's demos of the time period. But my initial post was only for fully-produced songs, including outtakes from the album, like "Touched By An Angel", "My Heart" and "Thrown Down". (With my one concession of the "Sweet Girl" demo which sounds fully-produced to me and thus made the compilation).

Demos and fully-produced outtakes are not the same things.

mikebise 06-04-2010 07:22 AM

Here's the track listing I sequenced for the demos Stevie recorded during the Trouble in Shangri-la era. Yes, I use "Sweet Girl" again because it suits my agenda. All of these songs are demos, except for the final two Bonus Tracks, which are unedited outtakes of their album versions.

The demos used in 1-16 are the most complete sounding versions, while 17-19 are not as full or complete sounding, so they are bonuses. None of these demo versions are from early in Stevie's career, all are from 1995-2000.

The Road To Shangri-la ~ Stevie Nicks

1. Trouble in Shangri-la ~ Demo #2 (Acoustic guitar demo,longer)
2. Fall From Grace
3. Annabel Lee
4. Not Make Believe
5. Twisted ~ Enchanted
6. Thrown Down ~ Demo #2 (More Stevie overdubs, fuller sound)
7. That Made Me Stronger
8. Have No Heart
9. Sweet Girl ~ Enchanted
10. Planets of The Universe ~ Demo #2 (Stronger instrumentation)
11. Space Needle
12. Love Changes
13. Chanel, Chanel
14. It's Late ~ Enchanted
15. Bombay Sapphires
16. Love Is
Bonus Tracks:
17. Trouble in Shangri-la ~ Demo #1
18. Thrown Down ~ Demo #1
19. Planets of The Universe ~ Demo #1
20. Candlebright ~ Unedited Album Version (5:24)
21. Sorcerer ~ Unedited Album Version (6:27) ***Even MORE Sheryl Crow!!!

mikebise 06-04-2010 08:39 AM

Random TISL memory:
My ex-hubby Eric & I were at a wonderful seafood restaurant at Preston & Forest in North Dallas in July 2001, a day or two before Stevie's Dallas concert. I saw Laura Dern a few tables away, and, with a few beers in me, walked over to her, said she was great in Jurassic Park, and then told her:
"Thank you, Laura, for helping Stevie fight to keep all of the lyrics in 'Fall From Grace'!"
She graciously smiled and said, "You're welcome! I love Stevie and I love that song!"

:)

From Reprise's Official TISL Stevie Site:
Stevie also never stops fighting for the lyrical integrity of her songs. She recalls being in the studio with co-producer John Shanks, who helmed a number of songs on Trouble In Shangri-la, and playfully tangling with him while cutting "Fall From Grace" - the set's linchpin arena-rock anthem.

"The original version of the song had all of these verses... too many, in John's opinion," Nicks recalls. "So, we set out to edit the song to fit a workable structure, and it was just breaking my heart to let some of the words slip away."

Nicks remembers one particular session when pals Laura Dern and Rosanna Arquette were hanging out in the studio, and they caught a glimpse of the original draft of the song. "And they were like, you can't cut all of these words," she remembers. "Poor John, they were yelling at him and giving him a hard time. It was all done in fun and good spirit, but it convinced me that I had to fight for my words. Before the night was done, we got every syllable in. And it's become one of my favorite songs on the album."

I had no idea about this! If I saw Laura Dern I would collapse  I love her just because of Jurassic Park being one of my favorite movies.

Ok, I don't know if anyone else has listened to Mike's playlist yet, but I've just finished and I am already in love with it.

The songs sound fresh and new, and the sequencing of the tracks works really well.

Which album are you gonna do next, Mike? I'd love an extended Wild Heart... :D

mikebise 06-04-2010 03:20 PM

Thanks, Max!

Yeah, this should just have been a thread for Stevie Mixes, not just TISL. So, I'll start one where everyone can post their favourite Stevie Mixes, making up new ones.

And The Wild Heart is on its way! (It's tough!) :)

I know, right? I've never been able to make a Wild Heart one that I'm completely satisfied with. Maybe it's just because I love it so much the way it is...?

LOVE LOVE LOVE "Have No Heart'

Such a shame she did not record this officially! It's has all the classic Stevie Nicks trappings....mysterious & wickedly vivid lyrics inspired by "Great Expectations" & some classic poem that I can't recall at the moment, great melody & fantastic singing by Stevie & the girls. It could have been her 21st century "Beauty & The Beast" for sure.

Yes, I was thinking of Chanel, Chanel. I still don't think Chanel, Chanel is from the TISL era, its sounds more RAL to me, but I guess it is possible that it is.

What a great thread!

My mix is called 'Almost Shangri-La' and includes outtakes, edits, and fully produced tracks. I didn't mess with the running order too much, as it is one of my favorite sequences.

Sorcerer (Sheryl Crow Edit)
Planets Of The Universe [Extended Album Version]
Every Day
Too Far From Texas
Thrown Down (TISL Outtake)
It's Only Love
Touched By An Angel
Love Changes (Demo)
My Heart (outtake)
I Miss You
Bombay Sapphires
Fall From Grace
Love Is

who cares... just post it. What are they going to do? Kick you out for being a Stevie Fan? I think Stevie is doing just fine. She won't miss the 1.99 that Planets of the Universe is on itunes. We have all shelled out major bucks to see the same 15 songs over and over. So who cares if we trade Released Music?
