Impossible Stevie Trivia

Here's some impossible (well not really impossible, but at least tough) Stevie trivia, I'll post the question and then later on today I'll check back and post the answer.

Here goes:
The 1982 video for "Gypsy" uses stock footage at one point, another video from right around the same time uses the exact same footage (although a slightly longer bit of it). What is the other video and what is the footage being shown?

StreetAngel95 05-31-2010 02:35 PM

well you got me beat! But i'm helluva lot excited to hear the answer!

LukeA 05-31-2010 03:11 PM

Going off the top of my head, but the first thing that came immediately to mind was Queen & David Bowie/Under Pressure.

EDIT- and I'm right. Both have the same stock footage of the woman dispensing bowls of soup.

ButterCookie 05-31-2010 03:33 PM

Didn't know the answer. Tried anyway. Died laughing at this... again.

Videos were cool then. I loved Stevie's floor (that she loved) and that room with some lace and paper flowers.

The early days of music video parallel quite nicely with the early days of films themselves- to the degree that its almost spooky. Its fascinating.

Some more Gypsy trivia.. the video for Gypsy cost so much money/was so labor intensive that some of the sets/materials for it were re-used in other music videos filmed around the same time.. the most obvious being Motels/Only The Lonely, which was filmed entirely on the club set.

Yep, that's it. I remember back when I first saw the Under Pressure video years ago I was like "wait, I that's the same footage in Gypsy!!" VH1 Classic has been doing the A-Z 80's videos all weekend, I happened to flip over to it this afternoon and saw the Under Pressure video again.

This might be a a fun thread to try to keep alive, skuncles- I'll try one that should be easier for Californians, or people who lived in the LA area in the 1980s.
So here's my trivia question:
Right around or soon after the time of the release of 'The Wild Heart' in 1983, Stevie invested in a business in Southern California. Can anyone identify:
a) what kind of a business was it?
b) what was the name of the business?
and c) Which Southern California 'town' or suburb was the business located in?
*
I think it was nationally reported, but it was well-known for sure in the Hollywood area that Stevie had 'gone in' on the business venture.

Hint: Within the text preceding: a)
- there is a very big clue to part of the answer.

I'm guessing a hair salon in Westlake Village called the Wild Mane or something like that...

gypsy4life 05-31-2010 10:29 PM

Was it a "whataburger"?

Nikolaj 05-31-2010 10:37 PM

JamieK almost has it.
It was:
a) a hair salon

b) remove 'the' and change one word

c) not the right town :)

Hey, if it was a Whataburger, it actually would have gotten a return on her investment!

No Whataburgers on the West Coast :( :( :(

Hahaha move to Texas, we have TONS of them. And they are good only when you get good service, which is pretty much never. I can't tell you how many times I've spent 45 minutes waiting in line for a chocolate shake, only for their shake machine to be "broken".

Just on (or off as it may now be) the subject of the "Gypsy" video, I picked up a copy of the "Video Killed The Radio Star" dvd the other day and it features the full-length clip of said song. I think this documentary series about video directors was discussed on The Ledge recently, with regard to the Russell Mulcahy episode that featured an interview with Mick Fleetwood about the "Gypsy" video shoot. Well the dvd version features an extended (10 minute) interview with Mick (basically gushing about Stevie and the song) plus 11 of the videos Russell directed, including of course, our girl. Whilst the "Gypsy" video doesn't appear to have been remastered, it looks and sounds pretty good to me - certainly the best quality copy I have come across.
For anyone who's interested in the dvd, here's a link to a description of it (not sure if it's been released outside of Australia as yet):

Wasn't the Gypsy video recorded using actual "film" like they use when making full length feature films as apposed to just video? Thought I read or heard Stevie or one of the Mac members saying at one time they filmed the video with a higher quality film. Might be the reason for the higher cost of the video like Luke said and the reason it holds up today.

Based on how it appears, I would say that yes all of the Mac as well as Stevie's solo videos were done on film. It's really hard to explain the difference, but when you something on film vs. something on video you can tell the difference right away.

Got another "impossible" trivia question:

In the 1980's there was a short lived sitcom about two sisters. In their bedroom they had Stevie's "Wild Heart" album hanging on the wall. What was the show?

mikebise 06-07-2010 06:39 AM

That was in April 1984, featuring those twins Jean & Liz Sagal, Katie's younger sisters. Double Trouble. I very clearly remember The Wild Heart on the wall. And I think it was a poster of the front cover, not just the album itself.

New: We all know about Stevie's duet with Ringo Starr, "Lay Down Your Arms", on the Harry Nilsson tribute album in 1995. Well, later that same year, Stevie was to record another duet with another male rock star for a Carole King tribute album. It ended up not getting recorded, but who was the male rock star Stevie was scheduled to duet with?

SuiteShangriLa 06-07-2010 09:25 AM

Double Trouble opening...you can kinda tell its The Wild Heart album above the Thriller album cover

rockhopper 06-07-2010 07:22 PM

IT question 2

The Salon was called "The Wild Heart"; Stevie co-owned with Beverlee Vance and it wa sin Beverly Hills.

Nikolaj 06-07-2010 09:17 PM

Good job, there, rockhopper, you even got the co-owner, Beverlee Vance, extra good job!
The Wild Heart hair salon was in Woodland Hills, I believe, not Beverly Hills, but close enough! I went once and remember it was a hassle to get to, Beverly Hills would've been easy for me from West Hollywood but this was like 3 buses and the salon was expensive, so never went back.
