The Best of the Rock A Little Tour 1986
No, I have none to post at the moment, but let's start a companion to the thread Alex started for the 1983 The Wild Heart Tour.
I'm most interested in "Rhiannon" from Dallas, Houston & Austin ~ since I was there! Front row centre in Austin! Post your favourite 1986 live versions! |
Could anyone post the show that's on Cloaks & Daggers? Illinois? I lost my CD of it.
Small request: individual links and not torrents? Pretty please? :) |
All the best shows were the early ones!
Texas, especially..
|
Oooh you tease. I thought you had made one already. I never got along to making one. I have a lot of RAL boots, and just don't have the time right now to listen to them all and note my favorite tracks, like I did for my Wild Heart shows.

My old cassette bootleg of the Houston show (opening night!) cut off right after "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?", but at the concert, Stevie stuck around, even as the lights were coming on, babbling away. She started talking about her love for Texas, and how she had once written a song, "Texas Girls Are the Best" and she started singing a bit of it, before she finally left the stage. I wish someone had that to post!!! :) |

Here is "Gypsy" from Opening Night in Houston, as posted by Lisa in the "Demos/Live Requests" thread. |

'Weeelll, and you see your gypsy'. She just rips into every part in a way you don't normally hear on Gypsy. |
Nathan, thanks for posting that!
Yes, Stevie also talked about that song in 1986 in Houston on the first night of the Rock A Little Tour. After "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?", the lights were coming on and Stevie just would not shut up! ;) I have all this documented because I brought along my journal and wrote down (in the darkness!) as many of Stevie's lyrics changes as I could catch. Most of the changes were in "Gypsy", "How Still My Love" and "Rhiannon". "Rhiannon" was especially different that night in Houston because Stevie sang some very different lyrics I've never heard before or since, not even on the Westwood One concert. "Once in a million years A lady like her Well, she gets up And she rises!" http://www.mediafire.com/file/jmzvvmo5jmj/16 And she would repeat that "She gets up!" line several times throughout the song. But I've never heard it on any other 1986 concerts. P.S. Thanks, Lindsay, for Cloaks & Daggers! |

Thank you!!!! How exciting!!!!!!
As George Takei would say: "Oh my!" |
The Austin labeled "Gypsy" is really the ending of "I Can't Wait" from the instrumental break. "Gypsy" was only done opening night in Houston (Viv says more and I'd LOVE to hear them!!!!).

BTW, on the Austin "I Can't Wait" ~
I was there on front row, right at Stevie's mic (we bought the tickets from a scalper right there before the show right in front of the Irwin Center!). On the second verse, you'll notice Stevie isn't singing. Well, she was just standing there, completely lost after the first chorus. Waddy had to come up to her and yell the lyrics in her ear to get her singing on the "Well, she dances around in a circle" bridge. Also, right next to Stevie's mic was a huge bottle of Jack Daniel's. She had a red plastic cup she sipped from, but then later on she was just swigging the bottle when the lights were dark. Just reporting, not hating or judging! I drank plenty of beer that night myself! :) |

Stevie was supposed to play in Austin in October 1987 the night after the Houston show on the Tango In The Night Tour, but she had "bronchitis which made her performance less than she wanted it to be". Which was crazy, 'cause the Houston show was awesome! So, the Austin show was made up some time around Thanksgiving 1987.
Stevie's last solo concert in Austin at the Irwin Center was in October 1989 on The Other Side of The Mirror Tour. I also had front row seats for this show (not for Houston or Dallas on this tour). During the "Edge of Seventeen" walk (which she did not do in Houston because of this bizarre barrier at the stage), Stevie took both of my hands as I was screaming: "We LOVE you, STEVIE!!!!!!!!" She smiled and said, "I love you, too!" I'm allergic to all metal, but, for some unmemorable reason, I was actually wearing a ring that night. When Stevie took my hands, a few strands of her purple extensions got caught in my ring and were yanked out! (NOT on purpose!! Stevie never noticed!) I treasured those purple strands for years, until they were lost in a move in 1998 in Dallas. :( I don't remember if Stevie went to the Irwin Center for the Behind The Mask Tour in 1990, 'cause I only went to the Houston show for that tour. (I went back to school at Texas A&M in 1990 to get my degree and was SO poor!!!! However, I could afford to spend $250 easily for the Westwood One radio concert on vinyl for the Houston 1989 concert for The Other Side of The Mirror ~ priorities!) ;) |

Like I said, Stevie had the discreet red plastic cup full of whiskey. The bottle of Jack was hidden behind a speaker. A male roadie came over every now and then to fill up Stevie's cup in the darkness. I could see because I was right at her microphone.
It was later in the Austin concert that Stevie started grabbing the bottle and swigging, disregarding her discreet red cup. |
I heard about some Wild Turkey during a Tusk show.
The Jack Daniels is cool though. Just straight whiskey? Yuck. |

Hartford Civic Center on May 2, 1986 in Hartford,CT New Haven Coliseum on July 29, 1986 in New Haven, CT I have a cassette of the new haven show somewhere I bought it a local record store sound is pretty good I bought it back then in 1986. I can't remember if she had alchol bottles out on front of stage i remember maybe plastic cups and she was awesome even though she was high as a kite on this tour this tour was probably her raspsiest vocally that was probably from the coke she was doing little each night to get thru the tour. I loved the shows |
I wanted to thank Lindsay again for posting Cloaks and Daggers. I bought that CD back in 1994 and lost it in 2006 before uploading it to my computer. I completely forgot how, on the fifth verse, Stevie is singing/yelling: "And when I call will you walk gently through my shadow?!!!"
Wow!!! That still gives me chills to this day, and I remember clearly my apartment in Houston that I was in in Spring 1994 when I heard it the first time. Thanks again, Lindsay. BTW, guys, I never said Stevie had a problem with alcohol. I just saw her drink some Jack Daniels from a bottle in April 1986 in Austin. Stevie herself says her problems were with Cocaine and Klonopin and has repeatedly said that she isn't an alcoholic. I didn't mean to start that tired old debate. Just sharing my experience. |
