Affairs Of The Heart...speaking of "Country" Any more than 2 versions?
Hey you guys...
As you know I'm a Country Strummin' and Pickin' digger. Seriously, we have been talking about country with the "Rumors" rumors...and I've seen how it disgusts some...and others like me think its cool. I'm into the older Country...just like the old school Classic Rock. I'm from Boston and Beverly Hills so, even I can't figure out how that genre of music slipped through! Haha. Anyway, my mom had all the vinyls that I would play on the Living Room stereo...most don't remember those huge pieces like a coffin furniturey thing that you lifted the top and tada...a turntable and radio...there wasn't an equalizer...it was pretty much set to high bass. Wow. My generation had the ghetto blasters playing Classic Rock, Pop and Punk/New Wave. So Zepplin to Edge of 17, Cyndi Lauper Berlin and...The Dead Kennwedys. Horrible. Anyway, from the 2nd I heard this I dug the poetry but, hated the music...like much of the Mask record. Chris had nice songs, but again it all sounded like The Cure or The Cult...heavy duty thrashing guitars, which I love but, not from the Mac...all the way even before L & S joined they had a certain vibe sound that was almost Folk and Blues. Mask altered their whole sound, their thing that set them apart from others...and made them unique. Don't get me wrong...I wound up liking some but, it took a while...sans songs like Stand on The Rock and Second Time Around which made me want to jump out of the window or even listen to Cher, Bobby Brown or Toni Basil (my former neighbor and nut job). ...you're so fine you're so fine you blow my mind HEY MICKEY... Weird Al even sounded better...ug. Now back to Affairs Of... I wonder if this was a continuation of Welcome To The Room, Sara...or did she write it on the Rock A Little Tour...honey or pink and gray rooms in which she would live and die. My favorite line...break our hearts, tear it apart, but no one understands the affairs of the heart... Anyone that went thru a sad, nasty break up can relate to the lyrics of this song. I also was wondering if anyone heard the countryish sound on this and some other songs on the record? Now, Loretta Lynn did an album a couple of years ago that was produced by (I forget his name) the White Stripes guy...most, very cool and true to her unique sound but many sounded like Dolly on dope doing Thrash Rock. Huh? Stevie is known to write in a countryish style as she, like me was first exposed to music via Country and Western. Do any of you Ledgies like this song? Do you like her country songs...demos or released like, Designs Of Love, That's Alright, Cathouse Blues or Garbo demo and The Feeling Remains...How about, Crying In The Night? Country with the edge of heavy electric guitars and bass. I would like to know if there are any other versions of this...like a very plain demo with a strummer and a picker...or any others with this kind of sound? What are your takes? Jim |
its one of my favorite Stevie songs, and I wish she would have performed it on the Behind the Mask Tour.

I love to sing in the car and so I took some of the karaoke tracks and adapted them for my key, and even though I'm not a huge country fan I always feel like I'm doing a country song when I sing "No Questions Asked", which I always felt was an early indication of what the Mask sessions were to sound like.

I was at the first show of the Behind the Mask tour - it was March 1990 in Brisbane Australia - a Friday night and they played 'Affairs of the Heart' - I emailed Nicksfix once to update the tour set list and I got a response to say they were checking with 'their people' to confirm it was played but there was no update to the concert set list, but they definitely played it. It may have been the only time, I don't know. I went on the Friday night, and I don't know what they played across the rest of the country.

Last show at the LA Forum
Hi. I would love her to pull that obscure, almost dismissed song. I went to the last gig in Los Angeles...paid huge for a last minute 3rd party ticket. I'm almost afraid to say this. Not knowing of the unfolding drama at that time, in hindsight, I almost felt uncomfortable. Tension was thick. No Chris or Stevie usual chatter with the audience. Looking back, when Stevie came out holding Lindsey's hand...that was the first time she was smiling and she now, looking back seemed like, releived from tension for a sec. The bit she did share with the sold out crowd was in support of John's charity. The best part of the show....the opening track leading into The Back Of My Mind...from behind a big mosaic looking sheer back drop. Spooky, yet hauntingly catching.
Doe anyone have this live show? |

She came out near the end of the show for an acoustic Landslide with Lindsay in hand...she was beaming and the croud went completely crazy. I also think he did a Rocking GYOW. This had to be 1990 because I also saw Heart and it was their end of Stadium type venue sold out's.

Stevie and Lindsey are not country, but Bekka and Billy are. A country tribute to the Mac's biggest hit album would be pleasant, but unnecessary bordering on boring, since we all know the songs already.
But a new album of a version of the band consisting of, say, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Rick Vito, Bekka Bramlett and Billy Burnett, would be just great for doing country rock with a bluesy edge. I'd love that. Yet, the record label probably would not like that because they signed them because of Stevie and Christine. |

Hey, sorry if that whole screeching and condecending post I just made sounded that way...haha. I'm not like that. Maybe its rubbing off on me a little reading but not posting much on these fan boards for years. Haha. Jim |

Has no one mentioned or remember that Stevie's grandfather was a frustrated would-be country artist? She has mentioned that many times in interviews. He was probably her first musical influence. Given her age, the gold dust fairy stuff is getting old; she's on the edge of parodying herself. If she took on a country bent, she could reinvent her in the manner of a graceful old dame. This would nullify the painfully sharp comparisons of who she was in her twenties to who she is now in her sixties.
Many of her songs have obvious country influences: After the Glitter Fades Leather and Lace The Highway Man Garbo I Sing for the Things I Miss Someone Destiny Rose Garden Too Far from Texas It's Late That's Alright Affairs of the Heart - did she really perform this live? I can't believe that! Is there any documentation of it? Her duet with Chris Issac - Red River Valley - is great. I'm not a fan of modern country/rock. But classic country is very suitable to Stevie. She should/could do a great country album. I bet it would be a big hit. If Elvis Costello can earn respect in that genere, so could Stevie! |

I love Affairs of the Heart which reminds me of No Questions Asked in it's style. Paper Doll is another great song from that period.
Twisted (soundtrack version) is quite country too. |
Whats killing me.the label is not pushing to current cd to country airplay.
