Favourite 25 Albums
A while ago there was a thread about your ten favourite albums. Of course, ten was too restrictive! So a top 25 may ease the case... also, I've been purchasing quite a few albums lately, and they're all awesome (well, almost all of them... Say You Will doesn't cut it for me I'm afraid), so I felt compelled to update my favourites. So here's my list (note the occasional equal values):
1. Days Of Future Passed - Moody Blues I hope everyone owns this by now. If not, I'll buy it and force it upon you! ;) 1. Avalon - Roxy Music Quite possibly the best new wave album ever created! 3. Tusk - Fleetwood Mac We all know why. 4. Tango In The Night - Fleetwood Mac I'm an 80s man... inasmuch as I love 80s music best, although I was born in '89. 5. Go Insane - Lindsey Buckingham Remember, I'm an 80s man at heart! :D 6. Soul Cages - Sting While his other albums were great, Sting really shined through on this one! Sadly, he wrote this masterpiece as a result of his father's death - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sting_%28musician%29#1990s. 7. Boys And Girls - Bryan Ferry Another excellent new wave album, developed by a creative master! (And, yes, I love Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music's earlier stuff too!) 8. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd I expect I'll actually prefer Wish You Were Here to this, because "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is my favourite song (along with "Wild West Hero" by ELO). 9. I, Robot - The Alan Parsons Project This one I bought rather recently. If you like Dark Side Of The Moon, this is doubtlessly for you! But not because it sounds like a copy of it! :distress: It's just that, like the above album, it stretches the ideas about what music and albums should sound and be like... the same goes for the next album. 10. Tales Of Mystery And Imagination - The Alan Parsons Project Technically, I haven't really listened to this album - I've listened to all of the songs from it on YouTube. But I'm getting it as a birthday present, so... :blob2: Also, "(The System Of) Doctor Tarr And Professor Fether" is a candidate for my favourite song of all time! 11. The Turn Of A Friendly Card - The Alan Parsons Project Yeah, I'm a fan of them! How did you know? 12. Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits I own all of their other studio albums, but this is the best! Although my favourite song of theirs (and nearly all time favourite song) is "Sultans Of Swing" from Dire Straits (eponymous). 13. Out Of The Cradle - Lindsey Buckingham Always with the new musical directions... that's why you're my favourite artist, Lindsey! 14. American Pie - Don McLean I actually adore "American Pie" the least on the album. While it's a fabulous song, he pretty much perfected his easy listening songs to my taste. That said, "Everybody Loves Me Baby", a rockier song, is my favourite of his, so... 14. Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman "Fast Car", just like the rest of the album, is simply beautiful. What else is there to say? 16. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac I wonder how Ledgies would say this is their favourite FM album? Or, indeed, album? 17. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac The album that started it all... the Rumours era, that is! 18. Mirage - Fleetwood Mac "...and you will fly like some little wing, straight back to the sun... the dream was never over, the dream has just begun... the dream has just begun..." 19. A New World Record - ELO I expect I'll actually prefer Out Of The Blue to this, because "Wild West Hero" is my favourite song (along with "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd). 20. The Soft Parade - The Doors Yes, their album that is usually disliked by fans! Personally, I love the extra brass and string instruments... they added a finish to their music their other albums lacked, imo. 21. Mystery To Me - Fleetwood Mac I pretty much love every track on this album! (Or at least that's how I remember it...) 22. Heroes Are Hard To Find - Fleetwood Mac Before there was Lindsey Buckingham, there was Bob Welch! (Or was it secretly Mick and John steering the creativity of the band?) 23. The Wild Heart - Stevie Nicks I personally found Timespace a bit hard to get into, and I thought that I perhaps didn't like Stevie's solo songs that much... then I bought this... and I now realise that Timespace was simply poorly compiled, imo. Anyway, I love this album! And Stevie too! 24. No Angel - Dido One of the few recent artists (well, 1999's close enough!) I listen to. Others include Norah Jones, Michael Buble, Jet, and John Mayer (well, all their earlier work anyway). 25. Life For Rent - Dido Another beautiful album from her indeed! :) And that wraps up this particular list! Of course the order is pretty subjective - if I were to have the patience to compile it again, especially after listening to all the albums again, it could come out looking rather different... in any case, while it took much longer to compile than the top ten, the end result is more satisfying and complete! :) Anyway, good luck with your list! :wavey: |
Oh lord....I'll be back in a while......LOL:lol:

I started with a list of 45, and had to narrow it down. This was hard!
**Edit - Also, I should say, because it's important, that while these are my 25 favorite albums, ever, they are not necessarily representative of the 25 albums I'd want to listen to forever, to the exclusion of all else. I've heard each of these so many times that I know every word and note by heart. I haven't figured out yet whether 'favorite' and 'most familar' are really synonymous in this particular situation. Ok, rambling... Bloodletting - Concrete Blonde Boomerang - The Creatures Black Celebration - Depeche Mode Confessions On A Dance Floor - Madonna The Day I Turned To Glass - Honeycut Diva - Annie Lennox Extraordinary Machine - Fiona Apple Far - Regina Spektor Fox Confessor Brings The Flood - Neko Case Fumbling Towards Ecstasy - Sarah McLacklan I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got - Sinead O'Connor Juju - Siouxsie & The Banshees Kasabian - Kasabian Melissa Etheridge - Melissa Etheridge Our Time In Eden - 10,000 Maniacs Parachutes - Coldplay Portishead - Portishead Rock A Little - Stevie Nicks Scarlet's Walk - Tori Amos Shades - Nina Storey So Tonight That I Might See - Mazzy Star Sounds Like This - Eric Hutchinson Undiscovered - James Morrison Out Of The Woods - Tracey Thorn You - Jessie Baylin |

I've just remembered another two fantastic albums, so I have to make adjustments (sorry Dido! :sorry:):
24. Graceland - Paul Simon I remember repeatedly telling my mum and stepdad to listen to this masterpiece on the plane back from New Zealand (I listened to it on the way there - it was about the only album I could see that interested me, except for an ABBA compilation, out of desperation!). Unfortunately, they never did... 25. Tea For The Tillerman - Cat Stevens While I still have yet to figure out what the album's title track is about, this is a superb album from a favourite artist of mine! :D |
In my early teens when I was really getting into music there were albums that I listened to quite often. I guess you could say they are favorites since these were the artists that I listened to the most. By the mid 1990s through the present, it is very rare that I find a full CD by artists that I love. As Ive mentioned before in other related topics, these days Im more into buying singles and making my own play list. There are only 2 CDs that come to mind in the past few years that I can honestly say I listen to in their entirety and that I enjoy, they are Miguel Migs Those Things (2007) and Shakira She Wolf (2009), oh and of course all of Kylie Minogue's releases in the 2000's :D
The list below is the albums / CDs I grew up listening to the most. 1981 Olivia Newton-John / Physical 1983 Stevie Nicks / The Wild Heart 1984 Tina Turner / Private Dancer 1984 Sheila E. / The Glamorous Life 1984 Madonna / Like A Virgin 1985 Lone Justice / Lone Justice 1985 Heart / Heart 1985 Pat Benatar / Seven The Hard Way 1985 Stevie Nicks / Rock A Little 1986 Bangles / Different Light 1986 Lone Justice / Shelter 1987 Belinda Carlisle / Heaven On Earth 1987 Fleetwood Mac / Tango In The Night 1987 Heart / Bad Animals 1989 Madonna / Like A Prayer 1989 Stevie Nicks / The Other Side Of The Mirror 1989 Bangles / Everything 1989 Bonnie Raitt / Nick Of Time 1990 Mariah Carey / Mariah Carey 1991 Paula Abdul / Spellbound 1991 Belinda Carlisle / Live Your Life Be Free 1992 Madonna / Erotica 1992 Sade / Love Deluxe 1993 RuPaul / Supermodel Of The World 1993 Salt N Pepa / Very Necessary |
This isn't in any particular order because I'm not into ranking my music so extensively. And I find it difficult to say why alot of the time, because it's such a personal and emotional thing for me. I tend to over involve myself to the point of crying with the artist, getting angry with them and all over the rainbow and back again.

Ah, I remember this thread! I've listened to so many new albums since... a fair few of my original entries would be shifted off a list of 25 now, and a few have been rediscovered (so to speak) and bumped up the list.
Just for the sake of it, I'll briefly write a top ten here (any more and I'll be hopelessly unable to demarcate): 1. Days Of Future Passed - The Moody Blues 2. In Search Of The Lost Chord - The Moody Blues 2. On The Threshold Of A Dream - The Moody Blues 2. To Our Children's Children's Children - The Moody Blues 5. Revolver - The Beatles 5. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles 5. Magical Mystery Tour - The Beatles* 8. Eldorado - Electric Light Orchestra 9. Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits 10. THAT'S JUST NOISE!" Turns out I really like noise, Ma! Yay! Broken is not the best NIN album, technically-speaking - that is probably The Downward Spiral - but the nostalgic rush I get when I listen to it can't be beat. I could keep going with this. It is maybe sad. ;) |
