Original Gift of Screws cover/tracklisting

Curious if the cover artwork that comes w many of the "original"/2001 Gift of Screws downloads is just fan made.. It seems so to me, mostly because of the font, but the picture is interesting, so just thought I'd ask here.

Also, there was never a definite sequencing of the GOS tracks brought to the WB execs, was there? I'm assuming it was a batch of the mostly/almost finished tracks LB thought were best from the sessions..Or did LB already have the album laid out, w set ideas about running order?

Thanks

Fans did it--or somebody selling the batch on eBay (with cleverly altered titles).

It was put into this order on a single CD:

1. Someone's Gotta
2. Miranda
3. Steal
4. Red Rover
5. She Smiled Sweetly
6. Come
7. Down on Rodeo
8. Gotta Get Away
9. Try for the Sun
10. Shuffle Riff
11. Murrow
12. Gift of Screws
13. Bleed
14. Twist of Fate
15. Go Insane
16. Say Goodbye
17. The Singer Not the Song

"All songs by Lindsey Buckingham except SHE SMILED SWEETLY & THE SINGER NOT THE SONG by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards"

It was a definite running order. It may have changed before finally being released, but it was a specific running order.

The Chain 03-18-2010 04:36 PM

Interesting.. curious to know everyones oppinion on just how final this running order was to Lindsey.. do you think he was really pushing for this many songs, this exact running order? If so, it's interesting to me that he would want to include 3 Stones covers. And what's with the inclusion of that live Go Insane? Kind of makes me think the track order may not really be the final cut, but just an overview of his favorites from the sessions for Warner Brothers as opposed to LB really truly having a set tracklist in his mind for the album.

Goodness. Without listening to the songs in that order, it's hard to really say what I think about it. Well, I'd rather have Miranda #1, but #2 is fine. SGTCYM is not my favorite, but other people like it, so I guess that would be enough to keep people listening.

Wow. Just listened & this sequencing, intended or not, was great. I really do think if GOS was released in 2001 it would have easily been Lindsey's best solo album to date

You can trust me. My word is good. Except in those cases where I'm lying.

Glen Ballard & Mark Needham wanted it there.

I only wanted three things from GOS. They were Miranda, Given Thing and Deep Dense. Lindsey still owes me 2. However, I will forgive him because even though I largely ignored the demo, the song Gift of Screws is actually amazing and it was wonderful in concert. Just beyond. How did I not see that song's potential for all those years? He squeezed the attar from the rose on that one.

 my favorite Lindsey demo. To me, it's the perfect Tusk-era Lindsey meets modern Lindsey track.

& I love the music and melody from Deep Dense but don't care much for the lyrics, ecspecially the chorus line "Kind of like a marriage.." It just turns me off, it's just a little cheesey, a little too simple, literal :sorry:

I have a couple different copies of the bootleg, and they show Wear You Down at #15 instead of Go Insane. Also, after Singer Not the Song, I have Given Thing, Deep Dense, and ( on one copy ) Blue Turns to Grey ( another Jagger/Richards? ). Were those all recorded for the original GOS as well, or just tacked on later??

Are the demos of "Given Thing" and "Deep Dense" out there, would love to hear them if they are?

Thanks so much Holidayroad just downloaded and about to listen :D

Edit:

First impressions

Given Thing: rather like it is very very rough demo though so hard to tell how it would have developed.
Deep Dense: sounds great, would be amazing to hear a final version :)

Thanks again for uploading them

Think of the track list I gave as a snapshot of the album--its submitted form at a specific point in time (in this case, August or September 2001).

The shape of the album went through many permutations over the course of what seemed like eternity--in reality, about eight years. The songs you mentioned may have been slotted for the album at some other point in time, but not in September 2001.

So, moving from that point in time, how do you think the terrorist attack changed the track listing?

Even if he wasn't going to put them on an album, it would have been nice if Lindsey had given us more finished versions of Deep Dense and Given Thing. I'm not sure he was quite done with the lyrics.

rofl!

Well, 9-11 had an effect on every facet of American life, and "Gift of Screws" is no exception!

Well for starters: it became Say You Will . . .

agreed

So when does the GOS Peacekeeper come into the picture, because it sounds very similar to to many of, but not included among the 2001 submission for which David provided a tracklist..anybody know?
