Favourite song from OOTC?

I've started delving into Lindsey's solo work in the last few weeks, beginning with the purchase of Law and Order, Go Insane, and OOTC.

OOTC has certainly been the one to catch my ear so far, and in listening to it I've already started to identify a few definite favourites. I get the impression that this is one of the most loved Lindsey albums (and I can certainly see why), so I'd love to hear what other people's favourite songs from it are.

I've gone with a poll just to push the indecisive amongst us to make a choice for once, but if there are others like me, I know you'll need a qualifying post or two to mention all the close 2nds, 3rds and 4ths. So qualify away! Instrumentals/intros have been omitted, but feel free to tell me that you think that was a criminal decision if I've gone and excised one of your faves.

Obviously I was limited to 10 choices, so my apologies to Don't Look Down, Wrong and Surrender the Rain for grouping them together, but they should know they were not unfairly targeted -- they just weren't one of the first 9 to come up on shuffle in iTunes :p

jaycee 03-16-2010 07:33 AM

Well I'm personally appalled by your iPod in one sense, as I would've tentatively said "Don't Look Down", as that was the song that showed me Lindsey didn't lose his creative edge since leaving FM (although any first track for OOTC would've most likely done the exact same thing). However, in another sense, I'd vote for the three anyway, because picking a favourite is nigh-impossible (especially because, shamefully, I don't know them all back-to-front yet)!

holidayroad 03-16-2010 07:48 AM

My favorite has always been 'Wrong', even though I've heard some people say they didn't care much for it. Out of the Cradle is an album that I have steadily kept listening to over the years. It came out the summer I graduated from high school. I started college that fall and did a lot of my work listening to that album! OOTC deserves a lot more credit than it has received. We Lindsey fans know it's excellent, but the world at large has never heard it and they should!

Erin 03-16-2010 09:17 AM

Countdown! Followed closely by Soul Drifter. I seem to like his safer choices more than his experimental, I guess. Countdown is my happy place song.

bluefox4000 03-16-2010 10:09 AM

Ok that was so hard my head hurt. I'd have to go with Countdown. Oh it's such a strong album though. I also like Street of dreams. Surrender the rain, and Soul Drifter.(Which sounds oddly like Family Man) Oh this was hard.

Mick

TrueFaith77 03-16-2010 10:09 AM

Countdown is pure pleasure.

chiliD 03-16-2010 11:39 AM

I think Out Of The Cradle is one cohesive piece of work (like the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds or the Beatles' Sgt Pepper), so I've never really taken the individual tracks into consideration.

It's kind of an "all or nothing" proposition.

Completely agreed. I voted though, for This is the time. But now I feel guilty :(.
I love the whole album, really.

Gypsycat999 03-16-2010 01:16 PM

I voted for Street of Dreams. That's my favourite Lindsey song ever. But I also think OOTC should be listened to as a whole. It's such a package of joy.

michelej1 03-16-2010 01:22 PM

I love Wrong, Count Down and You Do or You Don't so equally that it's hard to pick a favorite. I guess I could just draw straws.

Michele

Dowie100 03-16-2010 01:41 PM

Street of Dreams because it is such a powerful emotional song

Nico 03-16-2010 05:56 PM

The entire album is a masterpiece. I can't even begin to select a favorite.

bucklind17 03-16-2010 06:08 PM

When I first got the album "Surrender the Rain" was the standout for me and was my favorite for a long time.

These days, it's "Turn It On", but not really for any specific reason aside from that last minute that I just love.

StreetAngel95 03-16-2010 06:29 PM

without a doubt, "Wrong"! I live just to hear Lindsey sing "Mr. Rockcock" LOL, but actually i can aslso listen to "Soul Drifter" for hours, only if it's the fast version...

starshine 03-16-2010 07:12 PM

Well I picked Street Of Dreams cause I think its also a very emotional song....he does it beautiful live...or he did on that tour....I also love Countdown too & Wrong.....I really do think its his best solo LP....though I am still missing a couple of the new releases of his....the live set....& something else....but OOTC will always be my favorite of his.....its hard to find any full LP were you don't mind putting it on & listening to the full cd....so its nice.....:D

I definitely agree with that. It was clearly envisioned as a whole, not a bunch of separate pieces thrown together to make a whole.

That being said, I love Doing What I Can. It just has such great energy... and passion.

You're not kidding. :distress: This is really hard! Such a great album, and I love all the songs for different reasons ...but I finally narrowed it down to "Doing What I Can" and "Street of Dreams". DWIC is the one that pops into my head the most ( and stays there ) - but I had to vote for SOD 'cause it's just so beautiful, and personal for Lindsey. It's just always been the one that stands out for me.

DoubtfulMiracle 03-17-2010 03:05 AM

Thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts!

I absolutely agree with those of you who have said that the album is best thought of as one cohesive work, and the idea of choosing a favourite song certainly wasn't intended to suggest otherwise. Taking tracks as separate beings certainly takes something away -- I just love the transition to Surrender the Rain from the spoken intro, for example, so taking Surrender the Rain by itself just doesn't seem fair.

In saying that, I'm going to stick to my promise of being decisive for once in my life, and I've gone with Street of Dreams. Absolutely beautiful in every way. I'm loving pretty much all of them actually, but the closest runners up are Don't Look Down, You Do or You Don't, Surrender the Rain and Turn It On.

I have to say that I really don't feel much love for Countdown, even though it's tied for the lead here. The beauty of music I guess

Little Nicki 03-17-2010 07:41 AM

All My Sorrows is disturbingly absent from this discussion. It's always been one of my favorites. It has that nice "rainy day" atmosphere about it somehow, and the thick Lindsey harmonies are gorgeous.

I voted for "Doing What I Can". The only song I really don't care for on the album is "Don't Look Down".

I like "Countdown", but I can't listen to it because of something about the the lead guitar; I think it's the pitch, I don't know. It's painfull; it literally hurts my ears.

tdfwiner 03-17-2010 06:48 PM

Surrender the Rain!! One of his most perfectly produced songs ever. The guitars, the lead and harmony vocals, the hand claps, instrumental arrangement.....there are so many layers to this song. An amazing piece of work. The production as a whole is slightly dated, but the album is perfect. Despite sounding like a product of it's time, OOTC is one of the most perfectly produced pop albums of all time. A Pet Sounds of the early 90's. Lindsey is a genius.

mylittledemon 03-17-2010 07:29 PM

the only song I "dislike" (if that can be said) is Say We'll Meet Again. The rest of the record is spot on.

David 03-18-2010 04:19 PM

In order of favorites:

1. Say We'll Meet Again
2. All My Sorrows
3. Soul Drifter
4. You Do or You Don't

sjpdg 03-19-2010 05:26 AM

My two absolute favourites from this CD are "Countdown" and "Soul Drifter". Just absolutely love them both!! That album came out at a time in my life where I really needed the message of both of those songs. It helped bring me out and keep me out of a dark place. I used to just blast this CD in my car stereo while I drove around. Probably really annoyed my neighbors!!!

I'd say "Don't Look Down", "You Do Or You Don't", "Turn It On" and "Doing What I Can" would come next in order of preference.

Overall, really love that CD.

GoS 03-25-2010 03:52 PM

All My Sorrow/Soul Drifter/Surrender the Rain have always stood out as weak tracks to me. Though certainly not bad.

I think this album is the least "put in and listen straight through" out of all of his albums (Maybe except Gift of Screws). But I guess that's just me...

Pretty much the same here. I have to admit it's a perfect album closer, tho. Maybe one of the reasons I dislike it is I'm never ready for the album to be over!

Really? This album is my happy place. Oh well to each his own.

I'm the reverse (or inverse, here?). I think GOS and OOTC are the most "listen straight through" albums. I don't skip tracks on any of the albums, but I might want to on the others.

I don't know why I didn't voted in this poll at its moment. Probably I was out of town where I don't connect often.

But my favorite is Soul Drifter, no doubt. Followed by Say we'll meet again, not so much for the melody but for the lyrics that are full of hope, or so I perceive.

I hereby dub thee THE RESURRECTOR!

I picked You Do or You Don’t. But I easily could have picked five or six others. I’ve always been a fan of All My Sorrows. Curious about its origins, which are not clearly credited on the album. Google says it was originally a Shadows song…

You Do Or You Don't is my perennial favorite from OOTC as well.

I thought Lindsey did All My Sorrows as a cover/interpretation of All My Sorrows by the Kingston Trio, who were his favorite band early on I believe. Seems like it's a traditional song, so the Kingston Trio version is in turn an interpretation of a folk song. Lindsey's version knocks them all out of the park.

Villavic 11-16-2024 11:37 AM

Seeing so far as there isn't a single song that makes it over 20%, that means that several songs, if not all, are fans' choice. OOTC is definitely a very good album.

Macfan4life 11-18-2024 12:32 PM

Its hard to pick. I voted for Wrong but his CD and tour of 2018 had me rediscover Doing What I can. But they are all good.

bombaysaffires 11-18-2024 04:33 PM

Soul Drifter for the win.

EVERY time I've been able to pick up a Rick Turner model one, the absolute FIRST thing I play is the intro to Countdown.

I'm not sure who you've been tasting, but clearly you need to switch.

I don't care HOW many times you finger Rick Turner...Soul Drifter is a better tune. Countdown has a nice little riff, but not the same thing.

Rick is dead, and even I'm not that pervy.

Countdown is as hooky as it gets.
