Video of Nightbird on SNL & Video of Nightbitd on Solid Gold

Sorry, I started to post a video of Nightbird on SNL a few days, but didn't want to step on anyone's toes so to speak, because their is an Nightbird appreciation thread already, so I deleted it , but instead I now decided to post it this way to make it different, and also so we all can see the two videos back to back, or as Stevie would say " back to front". I know the Solid Gold one is already on you tube but I figured I'd add the SNL one too. :D

THAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANK YOU ! I've been searching for this for weeks ! You're great ! Thanks. one more time.

Sanne2 03-04-2010 03:50 PM

I think the Solid Gold version is better.

Has anyone got the SNL version of Stand Back? It's my favourite perfomance and I can't find it on YouTube anymore! :(

I agree, I think I like the slight vocal change, arrangement a bit better, but they both rock, and I like the fact that the SNL version is live players.

No problem.

I feel like in the SNL version I'm looking up her nose throughout the second verse. Is it just me or do her nostrils look big?
Seriously though the Solid Gold version is way better. It's just a classic. There's more fluctuation in her voice, the arrangement is better (as someone mentioned) and generally she seems happier and in better spirits. Maybe it's the lighter color dress and lighter make-up.

Solid Gold obviously was more of a “hit singles” type of show. Even though Stevie did not lip synch, the background music is a studio version, giving it more of a feel of what the show was at the time. Stevie is gorgeous on SG. SNL - I remember in my younger days watching it thinking, Stevie didn’t look that great on SNL. I remember thinking, ah well, it’s that type of show, everything is live and raw and her performance has that feel to it. Looking back on it now - Stevie doesn’t look bad at all, it’s just - again, that very raw live feeling to it. I find the SNL version actually more passionate in the delivery over Solid Gold. Both are great though.

I really love both versions! I just wonder why she decided to not perform it during the tour?

Taurus19 03-14-2010 05:25 PM

Does anyone have the audio for Nightbird, SNL?

If anyone has this to share, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks.

I wonder why too. It's a rare situation where she would perform a song live on TV, but not in concert.

i've always thought that it was because she thought "Nightbird" was such a special song, that she wanted to share it with the whole world, not just those who could make it to her shows....wishful thinking, perhaps...:p

and yes, i would also love some audio of Nightbird!!!!!

Following that thought -- if she wanted to share the song with the world, wouldn't performing it on her concert tour be a good place to start??

I definitely prefer the SNL version.

greendaze5 03-17-2010 10:04 AM

Stevie's appearence on SNL was on 12/10/83. I assume Solid Gold was around the same time.

I'm not sure, but wasn't the WH tour over by then? If so, she couldn't have done 'Nightbird' on stage even if she wanted to.

That said, doing the song on tv was only to promote it as the 3rd single from WH. She never seemed to have ever considered it as part of the tour setlist.

Being that the song is about the death of Robin, it was probably just too difficult emotionally to sing it night after night. She had enough trouble with Gypsy.

Stevie was gearing up for a tour in early 1984, with Julian Lennon opening. Announcements were even being made on L.A. radio of a big festival-style concert at the Anaheim Stadium with Stevie Nicks & David Bowie. Had that tour gone on as planned, "Nightbird" might have been part of the set.

These dates make sense - Nightbird was released in November of 83, so she was just promoting the newest single.

I'm bringing this thread back because I went searching for the SNL clip and couldn't find it on YouTube and I really wanted to send the link to someone and when I finally found it, it was right here on The Ledge. So I felt this clip needed a little more love.

I'm a very busy person, very social and always around people. But every once in a while I used to get hit with an incredible loneliness. That changed when I found someone special who is very important to me and he's taken that loneliness away. But a good friend of mine just posted on facebook that he's feeling that same loneliness that I always did. And it's a really odd feeling because you have tons of people around you, who you know love and care about you, but you just can't shake that feeling. And when Stevie sings "sometimes I am surrounded by too much love" you know exactly what that feels like. And being that this friend is really young I didn't want to just send the song, because when you're young you never just sit and listen to a song, you need a video to go with it. And this particular recording really emphasizes that line more than the Solid Gold clip, I think. So I sent him the direct link. I hope it makes him smile. Thank you to whoever still has that up on their photobucket page. It really means a lot to me to be able to share that with him right now.

LOL ..so true! And I would note that a Saturday Night Live audience is hardly "the whole world!"

I prefer that performance over the Solid Gold performance, mainly because it was done with a live band, and the ending was more lyrically consistent with the original version.

darklinensuit 09-29-2012 03:08 PM

I much prefer the Solid Gold version. Better acoustics (especially the keyboard), plus Stevie's vocal sounds effortless. Also, the lighting and Stevie's facial expression look better to me - her eyes look pretty out of it in the SNL performance.

I remember Flip introducing her as a "rockin' and rollin' beauty queen" before "Stand Back", so I'm sure he liked her just fine, but it has always bothered me that this is the only SNL episode I've ever seen where the host forgot to thank/acknowledge the musical guest at the end of the show when they're on stage together with the cast. Of course the snub was unintentional, but I wanted to see the crowd applaud her again.

I wish there was a better copy then that muffled sound version that is flaoting on Youtube for ages. They should release on DVD or show reruns on tv somewhere instead of these reality crap shows.

madeline 10-03-2012 11:44 PM

You know Saturday Night Live put out a box set of just musical guests. I can't remember when it came out, but I remember reading who was on it. It was a 5 disc set. I remember thinking how dissapointing Stevie was not on it. But anyway alot of people were asking why they were putting the box sets out and then they just stopped. It was because the music was costing them too much money. So they would either have to put the sets out without the music or just not put them out at all. So I guess that is why they quit.

Macfanforever 10-04-2012 12:49 AM

I just hope a cable channel would rerun that SNL show .I caught it a couple times on NBC and the "E: channel a while back..

The Solid Gold Shows I have not seen reruning anywhere for ages.

Yes was not happy that she was not in the SNL collection.

UndoingTheLaces 10-05-2012 12:43 PM

I have the whole episode of SNL this is from but it's not much better quality than this.

Stand Back and Nightbird, from SNL, 1983. Great quality.

Blueletter18 01-07-2013 11:07 PM

Wow. Nightbird has always been one of my favorite SN solo songs, but I had never seen the SNL performance. Thanks! I prefer the vocal on the solid gold version- just came off a little more polished, and the slight deviations from the recorded version were spot on. The arrangement with Lori starting each line and Stevie coming in after her is so creative, I have never heard anyone else do something like that.

FierySequences 01-07-2013 11:37 PM

Wow ty for posting KarmaC!

This I believe catches the true excitement and essence of 83/84 when SB and Stevie was all the rage.

I'm embarressed to be a fan all these years and never really knew the true interpretation of the lyrics. One night, recently it hit me like a ton of bricks. I think I was listening to a live performance, possibly the SG version.

It all made sense when I put together the lines "One man did not fall (in love with me)....Well, you could be standing in a line"

Do you know what happened that the tour did not go on as planned?

I always wondered what was going on there at the end of the SNL performance when she backs away from Lori.. if you look closely she reaches behind her kind of groping for Waddy and then grabs on to him. Then he leans in and says something to her and she kinda nods her head to what he's saying while still smiling for the cameras/audience. It was like she wanted to step away from Lori without being too rude about it... If anyone can make out what Waddy might be saying I'd love to figure it out. There *was* something rather girl-love-ish about her and Lori snuggled so closely around that microphone....;)

He was more than likely talking about one of the audience members and she agreed with what he was saying. I don't think it had anything to do with Lori. Stevie seemed very comfortable sharing the mic with Lori. If anything, Lori looked nervous on camera.

An ex-coworker of mine worked with sales people at Amazon. She told me that they monitor customer requests on their web site (those "Alert Me" buttons) for certain DVDs, such as various seasons of TV programs. If there is a enough interest in a title, they work with producers to get it released. I noticed that there's an entry for Season 9 of SNL (when Stevie appeared). Maybe if enough of us signed up to be notified the DVD could finally be released. Of course, they'd have to release Seasons 6, 7 & 8 first.

Here's the link to Season 9 in case we wanted to start some kind of grass roots campaign.

Thanks for the info Daniel and also welcome back.

I happen to spot some SNL shows at BJ's Wholesale last weekend .They have the first couple of seasons there..I was thinking of Stevie's SNL performance as I was looking at the DVDs.

I have to keep season 9 in my notes.

I love both of these performances.I wish she put Nightbird back on her set list in place of those freaking cover songs.
