Lets Play – You Pick the Songs
 

Ok, here’s how it works. From these following albums: Bella Donna, The Wild Heart, Rock A Little, The Other Side of the Mirror, Street Angel, and Trouble In Shangri-la, take you the songs you least like or hate, and replace it/them with another to make the ‘perfect’ album for you.

You can replace songs with unreleased demos of B-sides (ideally from that era, for example, replacing ‘Kind of Woman’ with ‘The Dealer’, or ‘Love Is; with ‘Chanel Chanel’, etc.), alternate versions, or soundtrack songs from around the same time

Or you think the song selection is perfect on a particular album, leave it as is.

Just copy, paste, and type in your own picks. Have fun!


1. Bella Donna

Dump: ‘How Still My Love’ (don’t hate it, but if I had to pick my least favourite)

Replace with: ‘Sleeping Angel’ (beautiful song, should’ve been on the album) or ‘Gold and Braid’


2. The Wild Heart

Dump: ‘Gate and Garden’ (yawn)

Replace with: ‘Garbo’ or ‘Violet and Blue’ or ‘All the Beautiful Worlds’ (can’t pick, like them all).


3. Rock A Little

Dump: ‘The Nightmare’ and ‘Some Become Strangers’

Replace with: ‘Battle of the Dragon’, ‘Lady From the Mountain’ or ‘She Loves Him Still’


3. The Other Side of the Mirror

Dump: ‘Cry Wolf’ (hate this one)

Replace with: ‘Real Tears’. Drawing a blank on other songs from this time that I would pick.


3. Street Angel

Dump: ‘Docklands’ and ‘Just Like a Woman;

Replace with: ‘Free Fallin’ (I like this version over TP’s) and then ‘Playing In God’s Garden’ or ‘Inspiration’, or ‘I call You Missing’ (not sure if this was meant for SA or OSOTM)


4. Trouble In Shangri-la

Dump: ‘Planets of the Universe’, ‘Love Changes’, ‘It’s Only Love’ (Sheryl’s own electric version is better), ‘That Made Me Stronger’

Replace with: ‘Planets of the Universe’ (extended version with the added stanza on the CD single, ‘Space Needle’, ‘You’re Not The One’ (since Sheryl Crow buried it on a b-side), ‘If You Ever Did Believe’, Twisted, or ‘Touched By An Angel’

Bella Donna- Dump 'The Highwayman' replace with 'Sleeping Angel'

The Wild Heart- Add 'Blue and Violet', keep the rest

Rock a Little- I agree with dropping 'The Nightmare' , add'' Battle of the Dragon'

The Other Side of the Mirror- Drop 'I Still Miss Someone' and don't replace it

Trouble In Shagri-La- Leave it how it is

SYW: Dump Silver Girl and replace with Not Make Believe

God totally forgot about that song. Thanks for unintentionally bringing it back up! It is an AMAZING TUNE!!!! We should talk about it more often! :nod:

I wouldn't drop anything, but I'd add:

- Gold and Braid

The Wild Heart
Drop:

- I Will Run to You

Replace with:
- Garbo
- Violet & Blue

Rock a Little, I would leave as-is.
Not really sure what I'd do with The Other Side of the Mirror.

Street Angel
Drop:
- Unconditional Love (dreck)
- Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind (more dreck)
- Kick It (yawn)
- Jane (just awful)

Add:
- Thousand Days

This would make the album only 10 tracks long, but I dunno what else she recorded for this album that might be preferable to these 4 disasters. God's Garden and Inspiration are both god-awful.

Trouble in Shangri-La
This album is almost perfect.
Drop:
- That Made Me Stronger
- Too Far from Texas (Stevie's vocals are atrocious)

Add:
- Thrown Down

Some of the other outtakes from this one are interesting, but I can see why they didn't make the album.

Not sure where "If You Ever Did Believe", "Somebody Stand By Me" & "Free Fallin'" fall in the chronology, but each need to be on an album.

Drop - The Highwayman (I´m not a fan of Bella Donna style and this is top of that, terrible song...)
Add - Blue Lamp

The Wild Heart:
I wouldn´t change it. Don´t know about anything better from that time than are songs on that album.

Rock A Little:
There are very good demos and some of them I´d change with some songs on that album.
Drop - I Sing For These Things, Imperial Hotel, Some Become Strangers
Add - Love Is Like A River, Running Through The Garden, Mirror Mirror

The Other Side Of The Mirror:
Amazing album, but it could be better, I love those slow songs.
Drop - I Still Miss Someone, Fire Burning

Street Angel:
Great album too, but there are some great unreleased songs.
Drop - Unconditional Love, Just Like A Woman
Add - Thousand Days, God´s Garden

Trouble In Shangri-la
The next great album, but as always, there are also some songs I don´t like so much like the others.
Drop - Too Far From Texas, Love Changes, That Made Me Stronger
Add - Have No Heart, My Heart, Annabell Lee

I'm pretty sure you could do a whole other album with the Rock a Little outtakes, and just leave RAL itself alone. I'd love for Stevie to re-record those songs and put them out, in fact.

I'm thinking I would re-order the songs on The Wild Heart just a smidge. I never liked that Stand Back came right after Nightbird - the intros are too similar, IMO.

Also, I know there were a ****load of songs recorded for Bella Donna, but how many actually reached the more-or-less finished stage?

Sanctuary sounds like a finished song; so does Julia (altho I think some editing would help it; maybe that was why they left it off the album). Was there a more-or-less done studio version of Gold and Braid? I'd probably tack as many of those as I could onto the end of BD, but otherwise I wouldn't change anything about it.

Add Blue Lamp - the record would benefit from one more up tempo song.
I would like to add Sleeping Angel, but then this record would have too many slow tempo songs....so I'll weave it into Wild Heart.

Add Sleeping Angel instead of Gate and Garden

Add Battle Of The Dragon or Ideally release another RAL pt.2 with Running Through The Garden, At The Fair, She Loves Him Still, Reconsider Me, OMBTRRS, Thousand Days, Chanel Chanel... , etc.

Other Side Of The Mirror
Add Real Tears and dump "I Still Miss Someone"
Add the much better remixed single version of Whole Lotta Trouble, and dump the dull album version.

STreet Angel This one is difficult, but here's what I would do with what she recorded during these sessions.
Add Thousand Days, If You Were My Love & I Call You Missing & (which she recorded according to pre-release press announcements from Atlantic in 93') and Dump Just Like A Woman, Jane & Unconditional Love. Also I never liked the title of this record, I would kick off Side 1 with Thousand Days and also re-title the album "A Thousand Days" and kick off Side 2 with Blue Denim.

Add back the alt. version of Bombay Sapphires and dump the Macy Gray version.
I would like to add My Heart...But that would make the record too long. But otherwise these additions and subtractions would make this record perfect for me.:shrug: But it's still pretty great as is.

I seem to always be defending the songs everyone seems to hate, but here I am about to trash a song everyone loves. Why in the hell would anyone drop any song off of Bella Donna and replace it with Sleeping Angel?! Why?!?!?!?!?!?! :shrug: I like the song lyrically, but the song itself is not a favorite of mine at all.

It's not the best of the best but it's sure a helluva lot better than The Highwayman! Isn't anything? :sorry:

It means "Has Anyone Every Written Anything For You In Frightened Hallways of Gossamer Wings"
