Answering Stevie's Questions

Stevie asks us, the listeners, a lot of questions in her songs. The Nicksfix used to have a place where Stevie answered our questions. But we've never answered hers! Maybe this is why she felt the need to answer questions with 1 - 5 words each. We weren't giving her anything in return.

So here's how the game works. I'll ask one of Stevie's questions from a song, and then you answer it with whatever kind of answer you want. A Stevieish answer would be nice, but whatever works. Then after you answer, ask your own question that Stevie has pondered in her amazing lyrics. If we start to run out of things feel free to use another macster in your question/response.

I'll start!

Who is the beauty? Who is the beast?

PenguinHead 01-21-2010 09:16 PM

Of course I am the beauty, and Mick is the beast.

Can the child in my heart rise above?

"I don't know. I mean, fabulous men have said I'm beautiful, even the beastly ones. But they can't deal with my life, you know? It just bums them out. And I've never really found the answer to that question... One of these days, I'm just going to write it all down in a book. The good parts...and the bad. It will make 'The Story of O' look like 'The Pokey Little Puppy'. Are you going to eat that?"

"You cannot look upon the beast... completely.. unless you look upon the beast with love, 'cause then it bums him out and then it kills him"

 Sorry, just reminded me.

Where are the children? Are they hopelessly enchanted?

"Well, um, like sometimes I'm the beauty and sometimes Lindsey is the beast or Mick is the beast or maybe Joe or Don... or it could just be like whoever I am thinking about at the time. I mean the beauty and the beast is in everybody. It's like so universal, ya know?"

"Well, it just does. You know? And if it didn't, there wouldn't be songs to write. I mean, an artist can't be too happy. Like when my best friend Robin died, it was very sad for me. In fact, I didn't even get to enjoy Bella Donna. I was making pretend I was happy when I was dancing to Gold and Braid. But I wasn't."

I call Don Henley or Tom Petty or my mother in Phoenix. They always know the right words to say to make me happy.

My question: I remember a man when he said to me. He said what do you do?

"And I said I am the nightbird. You know, the one that sings at night. I am the bird of Rhiannon; I sing to take away all the pain in the world. I feel it... from the audience. They give me their pain, and it's such a precious gift, more precious than any stuffed Snoopy or unicorn."

A- "Well, no one can be as close to me as I am to Tom. You know, I mean...his word is law. And when he walks into the room, they literally are on fire. And you can't think abut anything else. Not about Fleetwood Mac or my solo career, or my dog or my houses...or anything. I mean, he's played with Dylan. You don't get bigger than that. He made me an honorary Heartbreaker, it was extraordinary..."

'Well, there's only been one love of my life, Lindsey, I mean Joe.....Nowadays, I've been so busy searching for an answer up the stairs and down the hall to keep anyone with me for long'

'So, how can you say well I don't know what love is?'

I've dated everyone in Hollywood. From famous men right on down to a waiter. Not a single one of them can ever accept my schedule. It's hard to be the one always saying goodbye when the limo pulls up to take me away. Besides I'm so busy writing the film score for the Rhiannon movie that I don'tt have time for a relationship right now.

A- "Well, it was all just a terrible mistake. I mean, Kim and I were just besides ourselves with grief, you know? And I guess I thought, well, my best friend just died I might as well marry her husband 6 months later. So I did. And that's when I wrote Stand Back. The lesson I learned is a man with a woman's name and a woman with a man's name are probably not going to be compatible forever, you know?"

Q- So how can you say well I can't see you?

"People ask me what I mean by that line. It can be anything, you know. A metaphor for love, loss. I have had both those things in my life, and sometimes I think I could do without them. But my glasses, I can never do without, because I have so many stairs in my fabulous mansion and Karen isn't always around to carry me up them at night."

Won't you take me home?

A- "Well, I would. But I don't drive. I mean, I know how to drive, but I just don't. It's like I have been in a protected rock and roll golden bubble for decades, you know? And everything else is taken care of. One night, I'll never forget. My girlfriends and I were doing a mountain of cocaine in my fabulous living room, and we were watching 'Risky Business' and I decided to buy a Porche just like in the movie. I was so wasted, and called the dealership and said it had to be pink and would you believe they delivered it the next day? I mean, it was so indulgent. I never drove it. Because I don't drive. It was extraordinary."

I moved out of this BIG house so I don't have to worry about who is gonna mow the lawn or who is gonna clean the pool. Now I live in this fabulous rock-n-roll penthouse in Santa Monica overlooking the pacific ocean.

'Oh yes, I've been writing my life story for decades, but everytime I think it's ready for publishing, I change my mind about who I am most in love with and who the song 'Sara' was for.... All my fans want to see these pages, but after what happened, you know, with all of my music being bootlegged, I have my writings watched over by two security guards that live with me and who I've ordered to murder anyone who comes near'

A) You know sometimes I think about life without fame. Sure we'd be the poor musicians lurching in San Francisco, but Lindsey and I would have a happy life - maybe some kids too!

Q) What didn't matter anymore?

I have a feeling that would be pretty close to the truth if they had never been famous.

Q: What didn't matter anymore?

'When I was doing cocaine, nothing mattered anymore. I'm just so lucky to make it out alive from all of my drug years. Now what doesn't matter anymore is how much my fans hated Street Angel. I say it was a masterpiece, just like every other word I write.'

A: You're lucky this isn't 1978, or else I would have gone on forever! There was always someone in my house, whether it was the band, or Tom, or Lori and Sharona. We called it the house that never sleeps because nobody ever went to bed. It was like, party party party all the time, you know.

Q: Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
