Cable Choice for My New Turner?

I know what Lindsey uses in his rig, and have read many times about this. What no one has ever mentioned is what cable(s) he uses to get the awesome sound of that Turner to the amp.

Any guitar players know what he's using?

I have a new Turner on the way and I'm cable shopping. I've been looking at Evidence Audio and Zoalla, but haven't made a firm decision yet.

I'm currently using a coiled VOX cable on my LP and VOX AC50 and it works well, and much better than the $15 cable I was using.

mylittledemon 12-23-2009 11:47 PM

Michael,

I use Monster cables on my Turner (and my Les pauls)... but I'm not sure what Lindsey uses.

MichaelE 12-23-2009 11:54 PM

I looked at Monster, but I'm leaning heavily in the Evidence direction.

Thanks for your reply. I guess that's one of those things we may never know without an insider.

I'll get some photos of the Turner up when it gets here. Should be Wednesday or Thursday of next week. Joanne is out of town until Tuesday and she said she'd make sure it ships as soon as she got home. She went to see her kids and grandkids in CT.

I don't think you should be as concerned with the cables as much as the amp/pedals for the Buckingham tone

Exactly. Unless it was a bad/faulty cable I don't think it matters at all. Cables effect on the tone would be negligible to non-existent. At least that's what I've always found.

Most that I've talked to at the guitar forums I frequent mostly agree, especially for a short cable run. I do understand the physics behind the claims they make for the high-end cable, but I doubt my ears could hear the difference. Too much R&R volume over the last 30 years.

I have the VOX and the LP dialed in for GYOW, SS, and Dreams from The Dance. No pedals at all. Can't wait to dial in the Turner. This should blow away the LP. I'm also looking forward to experimenting with the other tunes.
Another I have dialed in is Countdown for the lead. I have that slightly chorused through a Boss CE-5. The only tune I use it for.

Can't afford a Mesa after springing for the guitar, but maybe next year. The VOX does sound really good though. The only effect I'm running it through is a Midiverb IV through the loop for the short slapback delay.

mylittledemon 12-24-2009 07:10 PM

Yeah I have yet to upgrade to a Tremoverb Mesa, but I find the Rectoverb and the 25 Express model will do ya' just fine

I just bought a couple of pairs of Monster Cables (Rock).

I am amazed by the difference, especially on my Strat.

I should have got these cables years ago.

MichaelE 12-26-2009 05:03 PM

Well, I couldn't help it. I couldn't justify using a $35 cable for the Model 1, and then a five dollar cable from the pedal to the amp and three dollar jumper between pedals.

Just call me an idiot that got taken in by the hype (and the physics). Well, you can't take it with you.

$105 for a 15' Zoalla main cable, $45 for a 5' from the last pedal to the amp, and a $27 9" jumper between pedals.

I'm not what you'd call an audiophile, but I've done my share of mixing and recording in the past and I know good cables are important.

Small price to pay for good signal after dropping five grand on a guitar. At least I'll know that the signal chain is good.

Peestie 12-26-2009 08:06 PM

Can you point me towards the Physics? As a guitarist and a physicist I'd find it interesting but I've always assumed a cable was a cable and the rest was just snake oil.

MichaelE 12-26-2009 08:34 PM

Yes, let me get the link...

Here, at the site I bought the cables from...

Here you go, third paragraph.

Merci. I thought it would be something like that. I'm still happy with my cheap cables for now. I'll wait until I have something worth playing though it before I get any.

Think of it in these terms... your "setup"... whether it be home theater or otherwise, is only as good as your weakest link. The cabling. ;)

I thought you sold your Turner(I saw the auction end on eBay)? Did your buyer fall through? Or you've got more than one?

Yeah I have two. ;)

MichaelE 12-27-2009 10:23 PM

As long as we're still talking about this, how was your set-up out of the case, and what strings are on this guitar? Do they use the Tomastik Enfield?

If you changed strings did you re-intonate?

mylittledemon 12-27-2009 10:39 PM

Yeah I think they were Thomastik 10's or 11s each time I got my Turner. I use Ernie Ball 10s and have for years... but recently I've also been using Elixir's.

MichaelE 12-27-2009 10:41 PM

I've been using the EB .010"s for years too. I hope mine was set up with .010's.

mylittledemon 12-27-2009 10:43 PM

I believe they set them up for 10s as that's typically standard. I have yet to have to readjust the bridge on any of mine thus far. I actually prefer D'Addario over the EBs too. Try the XL Nickel Wound by them.

Damn, where do you get your money?

I just can't see spending THAT MUCH money on a guitar.
That said, I do have:
4 Strats
3 Teles
2 Takamine acoustics
1 Gibson ES-125
1 Gretsch solid body electric
4 basses(PV 4 string, PV 5, Fender Jazz fretless, Kramer 4)
2 violins(Fender and a student one)
2 mandolins (Flatiron and Epiphone)
2 lap steels(National and I forget the other)
1 Emmons single neck pedal steel
1 cheap banjo

So I don't have a problem dropping $800 on a guitar, but I just CAN'T SEE dropping 4K on one, with my house payment, and all the other bills. I just can't justify it.

mylittledemon 12-27-2009 10:53 PM

HA! I guess it's because I avoid home ownership?

You're way up on me! I've got:

2 Model 1's
Epiphone Les Paul (studio)
Big baby Taylor Acoustic
Yamaha Nylon string
Cordoba nylon string
Peavey Tracer (80s guitar)
Godin LG

No plan on buying any instruments soon... but I would like to replace my Mesa Rectoverb.

I left amps out. I usually play thru a Fender Cybertwin(DON'T be a hater!!!!)
I have a 71 Marshall head, with 71 4x12 tweed cloth cab
A 90's JCM 900 head, with a PV 4x12(with Celestions)
A Fender Bandmaster head
a Musicman RD80? RD112?(I'm not at home right now) single 12 amp
Fender Cyber Deluxe amp(**** shifted in my truck, and sheared about 5 knobs off of it, and it's just been sitting for about two years now. I've been too lazy to get it fixed.
And old PV Bandit, that I've been trying to get $100 out of,on Craigslist, for about two years!
AND, I just bought a Fender 1965 reissue Twin, in Nashville, week before last(I do sound, and regularly rent out my two Marshalls, and always miss being able to rent a Twin out, so I now have one(MINT).

On the guitar list, the only thing I forgot(so far) - a 1933/34 National resonator. I paid $600 for it, about 10 years ago. They usually go for about 4K. HEY, I'll trade you, for your Turner!

I also play keys, and have a bunch of dated crap! I bought a Kimball baby grand, about a month ago. It was on Craigslist, and practically being given away($600, and it's MINT.....it was $5200 new, in 1982, and appreciated to about 8K, in 1995....I have no idea what it's worth now.....piano tuner is coming tomorrow at 2.....I'll ask him).

And Mesa's are SO FKN HEAVY. I had a friend, trying to sell me his....it sounded awesome, but when I carried it home, I'm like "no freakin' way am I carrying this TANK around every weekend!"

mylittledemon 12-27-2009 11:02 PM

HAHA... so basically you could sell a few amps and get a Turner. I don't like switching amps... I find a workhorse and stick with it. No problems out of this Rectoverb I have now (had it for 3 yrs). Before that was playing thru a Fender Twin. I had a Peavey... something... back in the day. Solid state.

MichaelE 12-27-2009 11:19 PM

Try lugging around an AC50 2x12. I'm getting to old for this.

Mine was $5K because I had to have the Piezo, the binding, etc. I figured if I was dropping this much on a guitar I was getting 'the works'.

The rest of the family includes an Ephiphone LP Custom, Epi ES-175, Seagull S6+, Ibanez 12 string, and a custom Dean Vendetta.

The LP pickups have been swapped with SD '59's in both positions, and the Epi pickups went into the Dean. The pots and switch have also been replaced in the LP.

I'm thinking of selling everything except the LP and buying one of Rick's RS-6
Renaissance guitars.

I've customized two of my Strats, which has practically stopped me from playing any other guitars, live. EMG active pickups, and Fishman piezo acoustic bridges. The variety of sounds(especially the acoustic sound), has limited me to playing only two guitars, now.

MichaelE 12-27-2009 11:46 PM

This is the Dean Vendetta I painted several months ago. It actually plays pretty well for a cheap guitar. And it sounds better (belive it or not) with the Epi pickups that sounded like crap in the LP.

That's the Bavarian flag pattern I used. Most of the parts came from GF.

Hi there,
I think this video was posted elsewhere on the Ledge once before, but you may have missed it.
Here is Stan Lamendola, Lindsey's current guitar tech, and he starts talking about cables at about 2:22.
I really agree that good cables are worth the $.

mylittledemon 12-29-2009 12:38 AM

HAHA... that totally sounded like a plug for Planet Waves... the guy asking the question! Ahh me. The sales pitch. *shakes head*

Ha ha - itt did! And you notice he never actually verified what cable they use. Rick doesn't know, and thinks they might have them custom made.
~E.

mylittledemon 12-29-2009 10:27 PM

Hee hee! yeah when the guy said "A premium cable like Planet Waves" i knew it was a total pitch.

The Turner is en-route overnighted from his Vegas store.

I had a very interesting 30 minute conversation with Ed. I just got off the phone with him. I had initially called an hour before to see if the guitar shipped but he had two other calls at the time and couldn't check.

He called me back to let me know it had shipped.

Then we talked about Rick Turner, Lindsey Buckingham, one other artist who buys Turner's wares, and several other interesting topics about Lindsey's guitar tech, what Rick Turner is up to, what Ed's up to, etc., etc.

You know, for all the bad press this guy gets on the internet in the various forums, I have never been treated with anything but respect and courtesy from this guy, and that was even before I had committed to buy anything from him or sent any money. I'm not LB or anyone else famous. In fact, I'm pretty much a nobody in the music business, but he never treated me that way.

I've heard stories about this man and his guitar store that would make you never want to go near his store, let alone even say 'Hi' to the guy in passing on the street. Both Joanne and Ed are OK with me.

I'm glad I haven't become another Ed basher.

mylittledemon 12-30-2009 12:39 AM

I never had a problem with him either, other than getting him to ship it at a certain time so I could be home. But not a problem in the magnitude that I had with Rick. Something has to be said for Ed Roman's "guitar shop" closing though. I think he's doing only online sales now..?

MichaelE 12-30-2009 06:28 AM

His store is still open, but by appointment only.
