Best Edge of Seventeen wail??

So I love Stevie's wail during Edge and I've decided we need a thread with out favorites. Mine has to be this one in Street Angel at 6:14. Simply amazing..

For me, nothing comes close to the EO17 mini-exorcisms during the RAL tour. One of the best of that tour is from the Bonner Springs show. The wail is truly otherworldly. It's so spooky I have Father Karras on speed dial.

Bonner Springs, Kansas
July 21, 1986 @ The Sandstone Amphitheatre
Frampton was the opening act.

I suppose had Stevie been riding through that area instead of Maryland, she just might have written Bonner Springs.

Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post the track later when I have access to it.

Agreed. The Red Rocks Wail is fabulous, but this is right up there as well.

Another fave is from the Sydney show. She incorporates some of The Nightmare into it:

"This is not the world...this is just the edge of it... (insert wailing incoherence here)..."

I know right? I always thought she sounded like she was possessed by Ms. Swan on that one.

Oh wow... ! Are my eyes decieving me or is her mic not on its stand?

It's no deception. I don't know why Stevie thought this was a good idea; but she removed the mic during EO17 for the SA tour. I guess maybe it allowed to her squat and wail easier that way.

BellaDonna93 12-15-2009 12:23 PM

There are many but I soooo LOVE the Red Rocks wail!!!! XD

Here is the EO17 from Bonner Springs. (The end fades out so it's not a complete ending.) However, a word of caution: If you frighten easily, don't listen to the wail with the lights off.

Oh my... ! Good job I had the lights on or I'd be terrified right now!

These are great!! I'd like to have the whole song from Madison Square Garden. Stevie does look awkward holding a mic..lol

thanks for posting. what's more shocking than the wail is the forgotten lyrics after it. "up the stairs...down the hall...but i did not hear an answer..." um, girls? can you give me an answer? hello? help me out here! i'm not hearing the answer.

that's actually the most severe cases of her fumbling thr0ugh lyrics i've heard yet from this tour. is she like this the rest of the show? sounds like she's a bit more spaced out in this show. not in an "up" kinda way.

Here you go.

Peter Frampton was there, he was the opening act, and he is also playing quitar with Waddy on this.

I love a good lyric fumble, myself. Or starting verse 1 with verse 2, and other complications. It keeps the show more interesting.

Exactly. And if worse came to worse (and it did a lot on this tour) and she couldn't remember any words, a good wail usually made a great substitute.

ragrsrocalot 12-16-2009 06:10 PM

^^ Exactly, it worked every time. It seemed like people ate that sh!t up. I know I did.

She would toss some "wells", "whoahs", "she/he said" and "babys" into that salad too, if she were lacking for a real lyric.

I would rather hear a whole concert of that raggy stuff, than to hear her sing 'Circle Dance' once in her 21st century voice.

Because that, my friends, was rock and roll.

cristochango 12-16-2009 07:32 PM

I'm gonna go with the wail from the 1981 Bella Donna HBO show

HELL YES!!!!!!!!
i love when she messes up
like on Docklands...yes i know not popular
but even she knows she messed up and it sounds like she's laughing about it

i love the comment about the wail, well and baby La Nicks salad...one day she's gonna sing a whole song titled Well Baby...and that's the lyrics interspersed with wails :D

You know Rhiannon from the Garden Show had some pretty wild wailing at the end too. I don't think I ever heard a crowd clap that loud in unison since then either.

Absofrigginlutely.

Oh how I wish I could travel back to that era and use today's tech to record those shows. It would be alot easier (and better quality) with a digi-cam instead of toting around a camcorder the size and weight of a Craftsman toolbox.

Yeah the Garden Rhiannon is definitely a wailapalooza. She was really shredding her vocal chords on that one.

thinking the same thing. am wondering how people that got in with a video camera back then were able to do that. i struggled just getting my little film camera in (with flash bulb strips too). if i had a recordable walkman in 1986 i would've smuggled that in to both Alpine Valley and Chicago shows.

i could've sworn back then that someone video taped either of those above shows as i recall looking over at the audience and seeing someone with a camera (duh). but I've never seen anything surface. have the audios but no video.

At least I can relive the RAL days through all you folks who were there. I was certaintly old enough to see her shows back then but I wasn't (gasp!) a fan yet. It's very cool to hear people talk about it who were actually there!!

Does anyone happen to have the audio from the Jones Beach concert from 6-8-86?

I LOVE a good Stevie wail!!!! I've tried to do them myself when singing her songs, but...it probably sounds really stupid. It also irritates my throat. lol

If my cassette deck worked I could hook my VCR up to it and dub the audio from the video. Old school. I know. Too old.

I got a nice double cassette deck off ebay last year for $5. I think the shipping was $8, so a total of $13 to get to listen to all my old cassettes.

I got it solely to get to my old FM/SN cassettes transferred to digital. You should look into doing something similar.

Wasn't Jones Beach 1986 the show that was used for the Westwood One Superstar Concert Series? Or am I confusing this with something else?
