Big winter storm

Well all is well here in the chilly upper midwest. Snow has finally arrived, and in a VERY big way. Here in MInneapolis as I type it's blowing very hard outside and still coming down. We're expecting 12 inches give or take a couple by the time it ends here tomorrow afternoon. I'm a Minnesota boy so this time of the year I'm like freaking out if there's no snow on the ground! I only live 2.5 miles from work so it's no big deal for me getting to and from and I'm just going to hibernate over the next couple days. How is the storm affecting all my gellow ledgies wherever you are?

EnchantedKiwi 12-09-2009 04:21 AM

Hmmm well I can't comment on the winter storm! But in NZ its HOT, plus i was just in Sydney and that was even hotter! The Humidity kills me in NZ sometimes :distress:

samthrax 12-09-2009 06:59 AM

I'm in Wisconsin and while there is a decent amount if snow out there it's not the blizzard everyone predicted. In fact, in the city, near the lake, it's rain.

I'm just extrememly bitter this morning because I was counting on a snow day. Or at least a delay. Heh.

GODDESS6 12-09-2009 07:08 AM

we got a foot, everythings closed~ we have drifts nearly as high as our cars~ we are now having 40+ mile an hour winds to blow it all around~

never been so happy to wrk from home~ & no one can get out to come to my daycare, so i guess it's a snow day for me too:nod:~

vivfox 12-09-2009 08:27 AM

Here in Massachusetts I woke up at 5:00AM and looked out the window. No new snow. Then I got up at 7:20AM and it is snowing and there is 3 inches on the ground.
It's almost 8:30AM now and it's still snowing. In the words of Stevie Nicks: I was not ready for the winter.

Then again, I never am.

AgeOldDesire 12-09-2009 09:27 AM

Three days ago it was 25 degrees here and we had the earliest snowfall on record for the area. Yesterday it was 80 degrees and humid. Tonight it's going to be 35 degrees. I just keep a coat, a sweater, and shorts at the ready because I never know what the weather will be like from minute to minute.

estranged4life 12-09-2009 10:20 AM

No snow or anything...

that could make driving dangerous, but outside it is currently a nice 14° Fahrenheit

fleetwoodtrick 12-09-2009 10:49 AM

SNOW DAYYYYYYYYYYY! I'm like seriously packed into my house! But I have enough toast and hot chocolate to make the world go round so I"m good. :)

You're in Massachusetts? How did I not know that?

We switched over from snow to freezing rain in Boston about an hour ago. Favorite

gldstwmn 12-09-2009 12:20 PM

It's 3 degrees here. It hasn't snowed in the last couple of days but there is snow on the ground because it hasn't been warm enough for it to melt.

hippilil86 12-09-2009 02:07 PM

I'm in Minneapolis, too, and it's not so bad. I love winter, and snow. It's wonderful that we finally got some winter weather! It is December 9th, after all.

We got hit hard in Madison--I think it will be close to 18 inches by the time it's done. Here's a couple of pics

sara1998 12-09-2009 04:33 PM

Monday we only got about an inch, but there was ice underneath and no salt trucks in sight. It was hell getting to work. We had real heavy snow this afternoon, but have only accumulated about an inch. The winds are 50 MPH, and tonights lows are going to be in the low teens. I'm not sure how much more we're supposed to get.

Heh... an inch of snow and Sara's on the phone with a friend talking about going sledding at the park. Good luck to her. haha! Guess I'll let her go and figure it out on her own.

equeen102289 12-09-2009 10:48 PM

There isn't any snow here yet. Just winds around 50 to 60 mph. I literally almost got blown over while walking to my car today.

Long hair + wind = frigging tangled mess

Wow. another Minneapolis Ledgie! We should get together sometime. There arent that many of us here in north country HA!

Gypsycat999 12-10-2009 01:22 PM

No snow here. And there's most likely nothing to come anytime soon. We usually have like 4 days of snow here each year :distress:. I'd so love a white Christmast... Oh well. I guess I'm gonna move to the Arctic. Wait, no, the Antarctic! There are penguins :blob2:

JWS 12-17-2009 08:26 PM

A big rain storm hit Los Angeles last Saturday. It rained all day...over two inches. Back to normal and 75 today.

LukeA 12-17-2009 08:38 PM

I hate hate hate winter storms, especially when I have to travel. Last year was a f'ing nightmare. One year ago today, I was snowed-in in LAS VEGAS... 3.5 inches of snow at the airport.

Oh good grief, where was this? I hope this isn't what we're supposed to get this weekend. It'll bury our little state!

tilthefirefades 12-18-2009 05:44 PM

I live in KY, and there has been cars flipping around here, and the roads are horrible. Other than that, I'm looking forward to just staying in for a few days, and having a good reason to call out of work :D

daniellaaarisen 12-18-2009 11:29 PM

Yesterday, the daytime high was 40 degrees.... today, it was 75 when I got out of school. I'm missing the 4o; winter is supposed to be about big jackets and freezing all the time.

Yes, I'm from California and spoiled with this moderate weather-- but I wish I could have white Christmases. :(

Edgeof27 12-19-2009 03:07 PM

CNN; "Snowstorm Slams East Coast"

Don't wish for the cold. It is 26F here right now and it's forecast to go down to 19 next week!

Yeah, Long Island's getting hit right now.
I just went Christmas shopping at the mall with my Dad
and we were driving down the highway in it -
everyone was driving nice and slow, thank God,
so it wasn't that bad at all. Happy that all the
Long Island drivers decided to be cautious and sane.
SO far the snow flakes seem kind of small - it's not really
the "large fluffy stuff" - - But there's not too much wind (yet?...)
so it's not that bad. I think maybe D.C. is supposed to get slammed
pretty hard, though.

There's a lot of cancelled and delayed flights, of course. On one of the most heavy travel weekends of the year. I feel bad for all the "kids" coming home from school and so on - - I have a sneaky feeling that there's a LOT of suitcases that are going to be getting some "extra work" as pillows in airports tonight.... :distress:
I imagine others are gonna be jam-packed onto busses and so on and taking 12-hour bus trips instead of 3 hour flights - a lot of stuff like that is going to be going on, I bet.

Edgeof27 12-19-2009 06:51 PM

Slow down......

Looks like the snow has caught a lot of people unaware......

slow down..........

I don't know what CNN is talking about. I'm in Western Massachusetts and so far no snow has fallen from the sky.

chelluversu 12-19-2009 08:08 PM

Now THAT is a Christmas miracle.

One of the more jarring culture shock moments experienced when relocating from Long Island to Phoenix was the concept of cars pulling to the side of the road to give way to speeding/blaring ambulances/firetrucks/police cars in pursuit. We do no such thing in Suffolk County!

Amlyn 12-19-2009 08:20 PM

I'm in NJ just across the river from NYC. They have been hyping this up to be a huge storm since Thursday night. Right now we have maybe an inch.

vivfox 12-19-2009 10:35 PM

It's been 2 and a half hours since my last post. Still no snow. Some girl on the radio just called in to the station to report she is driving in a blizzard and her location is about an hour south of mine, so I guess it could be here soon.

Here's an update on my end - in the past 2 hours the snow has picked up. We probably have 4 inches now. They are saying 1-2 inches an hour overnight for a total somewhere between 10-12 inches.

So, sit tight...it really will get there if you are north and east of NYC.

vivfox 12-20-2009 12:14 AM

Still waiting and still nothing.

vivfox 12-20-2009 09:23 AM

I went to bed shortly after my last post. I woke up this morning to discover the huge expected blizzard dumped an inch of snow on us. Turned out to be a whole lotta nothing.

You lucked out! I just dug my car out of a foot of snow.

ragrsrocalot 12-20-2009 10:12 AM

We got slammed here on Long Island. I'm not sure how much, but the snow drifts are at least about 3 feet high in front of the patio and in front of the driveway.

vivfox 12-28-2009 10:17 AM

In just the short time I've been on The Ledge this morning we've gone from a quiet pleasant morning to a full snowstorm. I love when it snows. It is so beautiful, like a winter wonderland. When it snows, let it snow. We might as well have 3 feet. Let's make it fun for the kids! Plus it puts more people to work plowing and in the Spring it delivers more water to the earth.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

I'm so jealous. We've got nothing here in Pittsburgh. I've never been in Boston for one of the snowstorms :( They always seem to happen in December and January when I'm home, and by the time I get back in February, it's just the *fun* ice.
