lets talk about.... THOUSAND DAYS
The closest you've ever come to me
Was to help me up the stairs You stood in the middle of the stairway You nearly dragged me up the stairs I think right here she's talking about Lindsey, he helped her climb the "stairs" of success in the music business, he dragged her along with himself into Fleetwood Mac, and helped produce her music. "You've been asleep." "Well, I've been asleep for how long?" she says "Why do you question me?" He says, "You never cared about time before, my friend." Seems like a thousand days since you've been gone... Seems like a thousand days since you've been gone... You're not my friend, you're not my love And this is something that we really don't discuss I really dig these lines. I think this is about Lindsey again. They're not friends. they're not lovers. They're band mates. If there is no time, and there is no place. And, if there was, well, you'd never leave a trace And as all arch angels do to you And as all arch enemies will finally do to you, too Well, I found you Quiet now, songbird, just for one night Well, I know that you love to sing And, oh baby, well, I know that you love to write You live by the light of the moon and I live by light of desire Ooh, such words to her over the phone "Just how many people are there with you now" Lindsey Again. He lives by what the moon says, or what everyone else does. Stevie goes by how she feels. "Just how many people are there with you now" - "Shackin up, packin ups all you wanna do" Well, I can see the trouble The sun is here today and I requested a storm But I like some kind of TIME/LIFE edition, Tradition, competition... Being the only thing that I really have to remember The great singers and the great players Here I think she's saying she knows there was a competition between her and Lindsey after their breakup and Fleetwood Mac. She admires him as a singer and player, but not as a person. And if the sun warms up the rain, And the rain puts out the sun Why does the greatest love become the greatest pain? So, where are you? I think this song is mainly about Lindsey and his helping her throughout her musical career even though he didnt want to. What do you guys think? |
"'Thousand Days' was written about my non-relationship with Prince," says Nicks. . . . . "Days" recounts an abortive, all-night '80s recording session with him at his Minneapolis home during a Fleetwood Mac tour, climaxing with Nicks "smoking my pot - he didn't agree with my lifestyle - and going to sleep on Prince's floor in his kitchen. I like him, but we were just so different there was no possible meeting ground."

I've always liked this song. I know we all have people we're hung up on, who aren't our "friends or loves." This was definitely one of Stevie's earlier really frank, and pretty damn angry songs. I like it when Mama doesn't mince her words! :D |
And Prince has that line in his song, I Would Die For You: "I'm not your lover. I'm not your friend. I am something that you'll never comprehend."

It's obvious this song is about Della and the dealer and a dog named Jake...and a cat named Kalamazoo.

Ha Ha Ha Ha. Keeping it real. |
So the lyrics to Thousand Days have these last verses:
Well, he is on my mind..he's everywhere And if he followed me home, will the sound of both of our voices simply disappear? Well, I miss you now... He laughs He has an attitude so I have an attitude, too He knocks on the door next to the courtyard Well, he frightens me so, I let him in But I'm already, well, I'm already screaming How can the greatest love come from the greatest pain? However, I only have the version that is on Enchanted, which does not have these lyrics... I assume these are on the b-side releases in 1994. Does anyone have an mp3 of this version??? |

So, I like the Street Angel version of Thousand Days, but I don't love it.
I really do love the Rock A Little era outtake with the saxophone. I hope we get this on a box set, but I have a gut feeling that, even if we do get a deluxe Rock A Little, that version of Thousand Days will not be included. Or that epic cut of Running Through The Garden she did back then. |
I've always loved this song. I like the Enchanted Box Set version a lot...I probably have heard the SA version but it's been a while so I should revisit it. Or are they the same? I think the story goes Stevie was trying out producers for SA (before she hired Glyn Johns) and Thousand Days was recorded with Chris Lord-Alge producing and that's the version on Enchanted? Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It's definitely one of her more "introspective" songs shall we say...a lot going on...conversations, personal experiences...lots of stuff all thrown together into a big stew. I find the lyrics hard to follow at times but that's part of the charm I suppose.
