Heck, I think even Tusk , the song, was somewhat frightening to people who were expecting more Top 10 pop smoothies. Tusk is addictive in its own way as generations of football fans can tell you today, but not so enchanting in 1979 when your sensibilities are Rumours minded and you were hoping for a big Christmas bonus.

Tusk just doesn't sound that "out there" to me. It really wasn't too different from other anthemic songs of the day from Queen and War. Here are the two that still frighten ME, 30 years later! :laugh:

I think the execs were frightened not only by the songs that were "out there" but by those that weren't catchy. Of course, Tusk is plenty catchy, but I don't know if it's a love at first glance -- or love at first listen -- kind of thing. Actually, thinking back, after Sara, Tusk might have been the only song I liked upon first listening to the album. I don't remember if I embraced Think About Me immediately or not, but of course, I love Think About Me and Angel today.

The songs of Lindsey's that are not punk are just so long and slow. I think they also would have scared the pants off of anyone eagerly hoping for something with a hook. Slap SMAP. Michele

When considering the talent involved along with the climate & circumstances, "Tusk" is quite possibly the ballsiest first single of any artist ever.

Well, one of the strangest things about Tusk its track sequencing. I'm not sure how the songs could have been rearranged to make a more "logical flow" from one track to the next--and I'm not sure such a flow would be desirable. But I do know nothing is stranger than hearing "Over and Over"--a pleasant, glossy, easy-listening tune--followed by "The Ledge", which is one of the most weirdly-arranged/performed songs in rock-n-roll. The juxtaposition of those two tracks at the album's outset seems to encapsulate the spirit of the entire project: two bands working in one, chafing against one another and each benefitting from the other's presence.

Very true. I'd also suggest/point out that "The Ledge" would sound even more jarring/out of place if it was sequenced into any other part of the album. Example- switch it out with "That's Enough For Me", and you'll find the flow is not exactly completely interchangeable.

Maybe it's because I didn't hear the complete Tusk album until 1988 or because I'm such a total fan of Lindsey, but I don't really think the album is that far out there. Yes, it is different than Rumours, but it's not completely away from a soft rock sound.

'Save Me a Place' was the only song I wish Lindsey had never done. I have no idea why he thought it was suitable for any album.

Oh Lord, that's nothing compared to Sara being followed by What Makes You Think You're The One :laugh:. I kinda think the transition from Over And Over to The Ledge is kinda fun. That transition is kinda like, "ok... this is going to be a fun ride." I still find Sara->What Makes You Think You're The One jarring and obnoxious... because Sara totally blisses you out, sends you off into dreamland, and then WHAM! you're slapped out of it :laugh:. But I guess that's part of what makes Tusk, Tusk.

I was of this train of thought until I watched the Tusk Documentary. The way Lindsey sang and performed the song in the studio versions was just so great! I kinda hate what it morphed into. The way Lindsey has been performing the song on his solo tours lately has made up for it though. :D

I'd say The Ledge too.

This thread title just made me laugh out loud. 'Frightened' is the word!

I think The Ledge is probably the weirdest one on there. Tusk itself is very odd, but we're all so used to it now that it doesn't stand out so much.

It took me a long time to appreciate Lindsey's songs on Tusk, it's only now that I'm really rediscovering them. Loving it :D

The words are great, but something in the music...too slow, out of tune...I don't know! It's the only song of Lindsey's that I dislike!

Sorry!:o I certainly have tried to make myself like the song as it appears on the album, tried to find something in it I missed before, but it never sounds much better. I agree that the version I heard on the Tusk documentary is Far better!

The live version is much better!! All I can say is that at least it is the only song of Lindsey's that I can say anything bad about!!

I vote for "The Ledge". Only due to the fact that it's the second song on the album.

After "Over and Over", which is a typical subdued and crisp Christine McVie tune, anyone listening to the album has to go "W..T...F... is this??". Perhaps Lindsey was going for shock value!

Hmmm. That's interesting, when I make a comparison and consider that Time Precious Time is the second song on GOS. While TPT is not shocking, it does take the album on an abrupt turn from the opening song. Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy segue.

I'd say The Ledge. If Lindsey was bitter on Rumours, he's falling apart by Tusk.

I like the sequencing of Tusk, it makes things interesting. Sure, it could be ordered logically but then the listener would slip straight into the music and find it an easy listening experience. Which, was the thing Lindsey probably tried the most to avoid.

The only song I think would be for me with lindsey from tusk that the executives might have went what?? on is.

The only qualm I have with Tusk (after all it is perfect) and it's minor, is that I wish Never Forget wasn't the last song. I don't want the album to end on such a calm, lovey note. I wish That's All For Everyone was the closing track.
