Gotta love that Mr Welch!
This is why I love Bob...
Actually I was going to just post the above video, then I found the following one which I hadn't seen before: |
Thanks so much for sharing--hadn't seen either of these.
|
I really enjoy Bob a lot. His work with Fleetwood Mac is standout and his solo work is enjoyable. I wish he would put out more new material. I would love to see him live but haven't had the chance!
|
That video of "Green Manalishi" is from the Don Kirshner's Rock Concert TV show (I was in the audience during the taping of that episode...it was my first experience seeing Fleetwood Mac live) Doug Graves on B-3 & synths. Christine with shawl, long before ever meeting Stevie Nicks...so who influenced whom in regards to the "shawl stage regalia"???
AHA! That's where they got the cover photo for The Best Of Bob Welch CD. (The "Ghost Of Flight 401" promo video) JEEZ! DJ Jim Ladd looks like he's about 19 in that interview! |
Thank You Thank You Thank You

Oh, and these videos are great. I'd seen the "Green Manalishi" before but not the "Flight 401." Bob looks (and sounds) fabulous in that clip! |
Who is the other keyboard player on Hypnotized?
Jim Ladd was a hottie! |

Bob Welch has one of the best sites around! He's directly involved in everything that goes on the site. He reads this message board, too. |

Bob is a BAMF.

I never saw that second clip before. Interesting. That second song would have really been something with John, Chris and Mick backing him, I think.

As I had previously mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, that's Doug Graves on B-3/synths (leaving Christine to concentrate solely on the acoustic & electric piano parts)...he was replaced later in the '74 tour by Welch's old Head West pal Bobby Hunt. Doug was one of the assistant engineers on Heroes Are Hard To Find...he passed away sometime later (as Welch mentions in one of his Penguin Q&A's) |

As I said in another post, I just love that clip at about 0:24 where Bob's fingers run up the fretboard like a spider. |
Ok so these are pretty scary, but we used to think Countdown was pretty good in its day...
|
These are great!! Thanks for putting them up! I hadn't heard of the show Countdown before. Is it Australian?

Finally a couple of promo clips also hunted down on YouTube! So who is the woman he is kissing in Sentimental Lady? Anyone know?

I'm totally igonrant as far as Bob Welsh goes, me being a fan of the Rumours era. But this year, all I wanted to hear from FM is from the "Bermuda Triangle" CD. I just love those live cuts of Bermuda Triange and Hypnotized. FM was never better, wonderful stuff. Bob is just a great musician, bringing out the best in everyone in the band. I wish LB would have that quality.

There are only five albums from the Welch era, all readily available. Buy them and listen. You will be a happier person than you were before they were in your life. |

It is also worth chasing up a couple of Bob's solo albums, specifically Three Hearts and French Kiss. The rest of his solo career has, in general, been pretty hit and miss. If you don't mind the heavier stuff, the chase up the two Paris albums as well. |

You don't have time today to listen to all five of the Welch era albums, and you don't have time today to find copies of all of Bob's solo work, but you DO have time to listen to 'Future Games.' Do it. You won't regret it. The title song was one of the defining moments of Bob's career, plus you'll get some tasty material from Christine and Danny, too. |

Personally I'd start with Heroes and work backwards but perhaps I only think that way because that is what I did. |

I like the idea of starting with the first one and working your way up through time chronologically. It enables a new listener to hear the changes in the band in order (even if not in "real time"). I obviously like 'Future Games' better than you do, so I have no objection to its being a good starting point. And if this listener is going to learn to appreciate Danny Kirwan (an important side benefit of becoming interested in Bob's music), she will have to start with the albums that Danny is on. But if she wants to listen to them alphabetically, or based on which cover picture she likes the best, or any other random criteria, that's fine too. The important thing is that she take any one of those records and puts it on the turntable. Personally, I like 'Penguin' the least of the five, but when I skip the Dave Walker tracks it takes a giant leap into the top tier. |

Oh and regarding Dave Walker: Quote:

As for when the "Welch era" began, I always just consider those five records as a unified group, not because Bob was the "leader" for all five of them, but just for convenience. Of course there are major stylistic and musical changes within those five records, resulting from Danny's departure, the addition of Bob Weston, etc. Let's not forget that Christine is on those five albums. Her presence on those albums is what automatically makes them of interest to fans of the "Rumours line-up" and is probably the main motivator for most Fleetwood Mac fans to listen to those records. |

I would love to hear a Bob Welch FM line-up coming up with "Everywhere" in a breezy, lighthearted way. |
