Classic Album Face Off

Years ago I did a band Face Off on The Ledge that took a year (a whole year!!) to complete and in the end Led Zeppelin won. Well, in the spirit of that, here's a random Classic Albums Face Off. Just vote for the one you like the best and post which album you voted for and why. It will be fun!

daniellaaarisen 09-07-2009 09:34 PM

Hmmm limited choices..... and definitely a difficult choice at that. But I went with Bobby. :)

jannieC 09-07-2009 09:56 PM

Absolutely The Beatles.

Reasons: this album was made during my favorite Beatle era- moving away from Beatlemania. The music continued to improve from here on out. Getting Better, Being for the Benefiit of Mr. Kite, and A Day in the Life are my favorites.

FMlex 09-07-2009 10:09 PM

I actually went with the Beach Boys on this one.
After all, Paul McCartney did say that Pet Sounds was a major influence for Sgt. Pep.

However, all three albums were very innovative and influential.

ILoveFM 09-07-2009 10:17 PM

I voted for Sgt.Peppers! It has to be one of my favorite Beatles albums of all time. If not my favorite, it's tied with Rubber Soul. I also just saw Sir Paul (3rd row!) in Atlanta and he preformed Sgt. Peppers and it was fantastic!

CreepingDeath 09-08-2009 12:36 AM

Ah, I remember the last time you did this. Good times.

I voted for Sgt. Pepper's (although, Revolver is probably my favorite Beatles album). I've never been a big Bob Dylan fan, and the Beach Boys have always just annoyed me.

LukeA 09-08-2009 01:43 AM

Sgt. Pepper is so wildly overrated, its ridiculous.

Pet Sounds is pretty overrated too, but since its the best of these three, it gets my vote.

bretonbanquet 09-08-2009 02:37 AM

I went with the Beatles, even though Sgt Pepper might be my least favourite album of theirs... idk why, it just seems to get the least airplay. Maybe I overdid it a few years ago :o The other two are still awesome though :)

rubytuesday 09-08-2009 03:48 AM

It's getting better all the time!

I don't get bob dylan. His voice is so annoying and his style is so hard to listen to its hardly catchy. I get that some like him but I don't get how he's so legendary when he's so hard to listen to.

mylittledemon 09-08-2009 04:29 AM

For me, it was Beatles VS. Beach Boys in that round. It was a tough pick, but I have to go with Beatles because it was just such a wacky album. ;)

iamnotafraid 09-08-2009 05:04 AM

BOB DYLAN for sure

Dodfather 09-08-2009 08:15 AM

Had to go with Sgt. Pepper here, even though I think Rubber Soul and Abbey Road are their best albums.

I wish I was on The Ledge when the year long face-off was happening..I love things like that!! Any chance of this running that long if we expand the choices? I'm up for adding a few to it to get us started...

I love you. The Beatles in general are overrated IMO, thank you Rolling Stone magazine.

Maybe, I was just testing the waters to see what the response was like to this one. I want to do a Laurel Canyon-inspired one next.

I went for Bob Dylan. It's not my favourite of his albums, but out of the three it's the one that means the most to me, plus how can you argue with that tracklist? Like A Rolling Stone, Tombstone Blues, Highway 61 Revisited, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues etc. It's a masterclass in songwriting.

My God - YES!! The whole Laurel Canyon scene may be my favourite musical era/genre ever. This one must be done.

Have you seen a dcumentary called 'Hotel California: LA From the Byrds to the Eagles? It's a BBC one and I'm sure it will be on youtube. It talks about how The Byrds arguably began the country/folk/rick thing and then how it was knd of killed by the Eagles stadium success 10 years later. There are great old and new interviews and performances by with, among others.... JD Souther, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby, Linda Ronstadt, Bernie Leadon, Jackson Browne, Neil Young, Waddy Wachtel....and on and on it goes...

Hell, yes! I must have seen that documentary about 10 times, I love it! One of my favourite parts is David Crosby dissing The Eagles. Have you read the book by Barney Hoskyns it's based on? If you haven't you must, it's absolutely fantastic and it introduced me to so many forgotten bands from that scene that I now love.

I've been meaning to get that book for ages. It's right at the top of my list!

In the meantime, one recommendation deserves another.... if you don;t know this book (which you probably do) you should get it asap..and it's a great price for the hardback edition! Here we go: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Twenty-Thous...2426466&sr=1-2

Lord, I remember that face off thing - I wasn't too happy with the end result, and doubt I'll be with this one, but I'll play along.

Anyway, I went with Pet Sounds. Easily. I can't stand the Beatles, and Bob Dylan is mostly bleh, with a few exceptions. Pet Sounds is a great album, tho.

I really don't like The Beatles. :sorry:

Definitely "Pet Sounds" on this vote. I love that album anyway, and I may dislike The Beatles but I hate Bob Dylan and his whining, nasally voice.

Musicman408 09-08-2009 03:57 PM

I don't know- I went with the Beach Boys. I just DO NOT like The Beatles.

carrie721 09-08-2009 04:01 PM

for me, it was a toss up between pet sounds and highway 61 revisited. i have never been a big beatles fan and i probably never will be, although i do have an appreciation for their vast contribution to modern music and for the many bands i love that they have influenced.

pet sounds is gorgeous and fun and brilliant, but at this point in my life i prefer the nasally ramblin' man aesthetic and gritty poetry of the baaahb.

carrie721 09-08-2009 04:52 PM

also sharon i would love it if you did a big album face-off like you did a couple years ago. i joined right at the tail end of that and didn't get to participate in the whole thing. do it for me, sharon! :D

DEFINITELY BOB DYLAN... for Me!!!

Donnie Wayne ~

jannieC 09-08-2009 07:44 PM

I am always so shocked when someone says they hate The Beatles.

GypsySorcerer 09-08-2009 07:54 PM

I went with Dylan, though if you'd have caught me on a different day, I would've voted for the Beach Boys.

Did Paul die before or after Sgt. Peppers?

I think it was 'before'. The whole 'hand over head' thing and the grave with the beatles on it. My friend was showing me all of that stuff and telling me his death theory haha.

Hahahahaha my best friend who thinks she saw the first real Paul would freak out if she read this. I'm serious. People at her job told her everyday that Paul was really dead, had a heart attack, overdosed, etc., and she would hypervenalate, no joke.

The majority can never distinguish between what's great and what's just well known. :p I'm kidding. I just don't like them or the idea they are the 'best band in the world'.

Stew_Matthews 09-09-2009 04:24 PM

Pet Sounds was my vote - thanks for posting, as the thread is an interesting subject.

I love the Dylan album - it is my favourite of his and had the Beatles choice been Revolver, I would probably have voted for it. But I settled for Brian Wilson's voice. He and brother Carl are simply my favourite singers and some of their best work is on Pet Sounds. Carl's God only knows is near perfection but Brian's Caroline no is just that bit more sublime. For me the two great tracks of the sixties.

The majority of Ledgies also voted Led Zeppelin (vomit) as the best band or whatever in that last face-off from a few years ago. There's no accounting for taste.
