I especially like watching this because I am still convinced that the song is about her.

Yay Stevie!

You sure? "Hotel California" was released November 1976, so saying the songs were wrote earlier that year, it would make perfect timing for when Stevie and Don were going out. But, I'm not a huge Eagles fan, just a casual one so I wouldn't know.

Not "Hotel California", but one of the other songs on the album, "Life In The Fast Lane" is rumoured to have been inspired by Lindsey & Stevie.

Yeah, I've heard that too. I wasn't saying "Hotel California" specifically was about Stevie, but perhaps a couple of others off the record could be.

Black_Moon 08-14-2009 06:34 PM

Oh, and sorry, "Hotel California" was released December 1976. My bad.

dnightshade 08-14-2009 06:41 PM

I know it would be kinda cool and romanticize things, but none of the Eagles songs are about Stevie, Lindsey or Stevie & Lindsey. That's not to say there might not be a DH song floating around out there that may have been inspired by someone we all know and love.

While I respect your point of view, unless there is a direct quote from one of the Eagles saying 'none of our songs are about any members of Fleetwood Mac', I'll always think that there's a chance. Especially as Stevie slept with most of them.

Agreed, completely. I think the parallels are definitely worth considering.

That sounds so romantic. It's amazing how we forgive her faults because she's a major hottie.

Faults? I'd say that may have been a talent of Stevie's, haha.

Yet another thing I admire about Stevie-- her entire ordeal with men over the past 30 years has made me respect her more. She doesn't seem to define herself by the relationships in her life and consequently chooses to do what she wants despite of the social repercussions.

She rules her life like a skylark even when the sky is starless.

So much of my admiration for "Rhiannon" comes from that feminine independence fueled by knowing that you are the best kind of "different" a woman can be.

...I always end up getting super pyschological on random posts. My bad.

In terms of the album Hotel California, if it came out in 1976 and the songs were presumably written in 1975, I'm pretty sure Stevie hadn't met any of the members of the Eagles yet. She certainly wasn't dating Don at that point, she was still with Lindsey! Plus in 1975 did Fleetwood Mac/Stevie/Lindsey have the kind of reputation for excess that it gained after Rumours? The white album tour was pretty short. So I'm in the I don't think any of the songs on this album are about Stevie and/or Lindsey. Anything written after that could certainly be fair game.

I think the band certainly was drinking plenty in 1975 as the Brits in the band had already been for years. They probably did some blow too on their first tour but the big bucks didn't start rolling in until the following year "Over My Head" started climbing the charts at the end of 1975.Remember at the start of the 1975 tour they were touring in an old station wagon .

Yeah, but isn't the 'demo' for Leather & Lace from 1975....when Stevie stated her & Don recorded L & L....since it was for Waylon & Jess.....they were going together than....of course we all know how Stevie is with dates etc.....but .....I am an Eagles fan......mostly they base there songs as a whole.....not saying that there isn't some infulence etc.....I myself haven't read any articles stated something is or isn't specificly about Stevie etc. I guess we'll not ever know really......I think they try to make things about all people......so the song isn't pegged for meaning just one thing.....go to Songfacts.com......its a great website for info.....whether its all 'true' or not who knows but its an interesting read.......

The demo might be from 1975, but does that mean she recorded with Don then, or later? I'm thinking later, but of course I don't know for sure. For some reason I really don't think she had met Don by then. Where's an Eagles expert when you need one? I imagine it's probably in Don's biography when they met, but I haven't read it.

I don't think he has a biography yet/Don Henley? At least I don't know of one. Don Felder does which I've read......interesting to say the least but thats a whole another story......I think they were going out in '75 but like I stated I'm no expert on the Eagles....even if I am a fan........maybe one day we'll find out??

And then there is "Take it to the Limit" which does mention the Nicks/Henley romance several times. It is not very well written IMO and does mention the old stand by that "Sara " is about their aborted love child.

But Lindsey and Stevie didn't break up until '76 right? Anyone? Anyone? I thought Don had a bio or maybe it was just an interview in a magazine because Stevie got mad at him for spilling the beans about her abortion. I literally just finished watching the classic albums Rumours doc (it's stormy here in Chitown today) and my impression was the official breakup occurred in '76, and for some reason I thought Stevie met Don on the Rumours tour. The old story of John and Mick pretending to send something to Stevie from Don because they knew she had a crush on him, but she hadn't actually met him at that point. Then she got to meet him right after that, or something. I don't think that would have happened on the White Album tour because she was with Lindsey. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

I think I am recalling a BD interview of Stevie with Jim Ladd(Innerview 1981) & she talks about L & L and how the song was for Waylon & Jessie ....Waylon had asked her to write it and she stated that it was like 1975...she said whats on the Lp is very much like the 'demo' that her & Don had done in '75...and she states that she was seeing Don at the time & that he kinda helped her 'write' it ....loosey ....stated that he didn't 'write' it per say but if it sounded awful he'd tell her to start over again. Maybe someone can post it or its up on Utube? .....its hard to tell when Stevie broke up with people...it always seemed like a back & forth thing esp with Lindsey....isn't it 'rumoured' that her & Lindsey hooked up during Tusk again?? ....so I guess only they really know....The interview with Don was I think in GQ magazine like 1990 ....when he mentions about 'Sara' etc....I've also read the Take It To The Limit book....its ok as well......anyway.....thats my imput.....hope it helps........:thumbsup: Ps: I am going by memory on that Innerview above.....forgive me if I am wrong....thanks......

I wasn't portraying it as a fault. I was just making a statement. I'm never going to understand how the men of Fleetwood Mac can get away with being totally sexually promiscuous, but when anyone mentions Stevie sleeping around it's called a fault.

A good song is a good song. I could care less about senseless tabloid-like speculation about who or what inspired the songs. Spare me the forced indulgent drama.

But on another note: from what I've seen of the concert footage, Stevie was certainly inspired by having Don Henley by her side at those shows. I feel that his presence made her performances stronger, and her mood more lively. She looked and sounded great.

She was overtly enjoying the moment and clearly smitten with him. Don is kind of like her Lindsey sans the baggage. They share very similar careers -- both are members of hugely established bands, and both emerged as hugely established solo artists, maintaining a balance act with both camps.

I regret not making the effort to see a show on this aborted tour. How many shows did they do? Did Don leave the tour because Eagles swooped him up?

"Here's one thing that Don did that freaked my band out so much. We're all in Miami, Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles. They're recording at this gorgeous house they'd rented on the water. It's totally romantic. It's pink. It's like Mar-a-Lago.

Anyway, he sends a limousine driver over to our hotel with a box of presents for me, and they're delivered right into the breakfast room where everyone's eating. There's a stereo, a bunch of fabulous records. There's incredible flowers and fruits, beautiful.. The limousine driver is taking all this out onto the table and I'm going, Oh, please, please, this is not going to go down well. And they want to know who it's from. And Lindsey is not happy. So I started going out with him. And this is not popular. Sure, Lindsey and I are totally broken up, I have every right in the world to go out with people, but...I spend most of my time with the band, and it's not real conducive to having a relationship. So, I went out with Don for awhile. I went out with [Eagles songwriter] J.D. Souther for awhile. We had an incredible time. "

The actual master reel-to-reel tape (which I own) has recordings of "Leather And Lace" with Don, and it's dated August 31, 1976. There are a number of false starts, a full recording with Stevie alone, followed by a full recording with Stevie and Don.

(This tape also has the Planets Of The Universe and Goodbye Baby piano demos on it, and they are listed with those titles, not listed as "No Light" and "The Tower", so I've always wondered where those false titles came from.)

Mick's book says that the band convened in Sausalito very early in 1976 -- January or February -- & that Stevie was already single at that point.

1976 tour. The Rumours tour didn't start until end of Feb. 1977. It was the 1976 tour, besides, where Fleetwood & the Eagles shared a bunch of bills at all those outdoor shows.

dnightshade 08-18-2009 11:33 AM

Just because there seems to be so much useless debate: For the record ~ it doesn't matter when Stevie & Don hooked up. The song is not about her. Or Lindsey. Trust me! If you want to anlayze a song about a possible link, look at "Forgiveness." That's all I'm saying. And one more thing: don't believe everything you read or hear. I'm not calling anyone a liar but someone could sit down with a reporter/interviewer and tell them point blank right there this is about this or that and in actuality, it's not. Unless you know the artist, you don't know. And sometimes they'll say one thing and realize maybe they shouldn't have said something or someone will ask them to retract a statement and they will. It happens all the time. There, I've probably said too much myself. Again.

Thank you, mystery solved! It proves the point about Hotel California not being about Stevie, I think (songs on the album having been written in '75 or earlier). Of course it's a trivial matter, but hey it's been slow here at work.

But Stevie said Lindsey would still come around and sleep over at her place even after that, which caused them to have another gigantic fight.
