Currently on Repeat...

Lately, I've been listening to a version of Silver Springs from the Dance tour, where Stevie's voice gives out in the end, and Lindsey finishes it for her. Do you know where it was that this happened? All I have on my mp3 is "The Last Dance." I'm pretty sure that it wasn't the last concert on the tour, though. I'm not sure what happened there, either. Did Stevie lose her voice in the end from strain, or was she upset and crying about something? (I think I remember hearing about both options being the right one.)

Can anyone give me some insight?

Thanks!

:-) Lily

Camden, NJ I believe.
Argg.. nevermind. It wasn't Camden. This is going to drive me crazy because I know exactly what you're talking about!

But the ending of this one is also worth noting:

paleshadow 08-09-2009 07:42 PM

It was Nov. 29th Atlantic City, NJ. Second to last show. I was at this one. Couldn't really tell if Stevie got upset and couldn't finish, or if her voice went out.

jenniferuk 08-09-2009 07:45 PM

I have it listed as Atlantic City and as 'Stevie crying/Lindsey finishes' but to me it sounds more like her voice was tired out. My other copy is listed as 11-97 but no details.

I'm gonna hope she got upset, as terrible as that is... the emotional presence on the stage during that tour really made it for me.

Ah, thank you! I thought it was somewhere in NJ lol

I'm pretty sure Stevie got choked up and couldn't finish it... at least that's what I hear anyway.

It was such a long time ago, so it's hard for me to remember, but I really think her voice just gave out near the end to be honest.

Somehow "Inspiration" slipped by me without notice. It's actually been in my itunes library for some time now, yet it only played the other day for the first time. I've been listening to it on repeat, religiously.

I was loading the dishwasher last night while listening to it, and I almost started to cry. LOL. I'm a little overly dramatic at times, but this song is really sad to me. No?

daniellaaarisen 08-09-2009 11:23 PM

On repeat for me: "Rhiannon" from Mobile 1980. I'm seriously obsessed with all my live Rhiannons, but this version is a) outstanding quality and b) really, really haunting and emotional. "Dreams unwind... is that what you want?"

Ahhh she is so perfect. I could listen to a different live version of "Rhiannon" all day, every day and still be amazed.

brysondt 08-09-2009 11:35 PM

Dani, we are kindred "Rhiannon" spirits, haha. "Rhiannon" is usually on repeat for me, everyday. It was the first song that made me fall in love with the Mac/Stevie. Mobile version is amazing. I love how raw "Rhiannon" used to be back in the day, huh?

Seriously...my first born's name will be "Rhiannon" (as long as it's a girl). I just looked at my itunes library and I have 48 different live "Rhiannon's".

Hahahaha, I have 47 versions of Rhiannon in general. I need more!!!

My first girl (if I have kids, that is) will be Rhiannon, regardless of my husband's opinion. It just needs to happen. It isn't the first song that made me fall really hard for Stevie, but it is the one that helped me understand why I was so outrageously overwhelmed by this woman and the music she wrote. For me, Stevie IS Rhiannon in many ways, and the song helped me define the characteristics I most cherish in others (raw, unadulterated emotion, feminine strength, the temptress appeal, all the "mystical" stuff).... and ultimately, what I hope to bring forth in myself.

...that was ranty.

fleetwoodtrick 08-10-2009 12:29 AM

:) I always have my iTunes on shuffle because if I don't shuffle it, I'd never get to listen to ALL of the Stevie music that I have! But Rhiannon, Silver Springs, and Gold Dust Woman are my top three played songs. Rhiannon because of the name obviously, but also how wicked it is. Just to hear all of the power and emotion behind the song both then and now... it's absolutely amazing. ;) Silver Springs was really the song that got me into Fleetwood Mac, and it holds a very special meaning, and I think that everyone can relate to it in some way, shape, or form. Gold Dust Woman just drives me insane (in the best way possible) every time I hear it. And getting to see both FM and Stevie solo perform it was breath taking. When I actually do get a band together, it'll be in the setlist, whether the other members like it or not.

Haha, aparently this thread has turned into the 'what will you name your first born' thread. Well, I'm not going to give my kid the same name as me, but I really like the name Lily. And of course Julia too, but that name's already in the family.

Silver Springs got me into FM, too! In a big, big way, apparently :)

In terms of kids names... well, I really want to name a boy Lindsey but I think my parents will be pissed enough at me for naming my first girl Rhiannon, which is happening despite their complaints. If I put Lindsey into the equation, I will be disowned :)

I have middle names all planned out too hhahaha. Rhiannon Olivia, Julia Scarlett, Noelle Kathryn (I hate that spelling of Kathryn but its in a person's memory soo....), Jane Alexandria and Adrienne Elise. So I guess that's three out of five potential girls' names with a Stevie reference HAHAHAHA. My husband/parents are going to kill me.

Black_Moon 08-10-2009 06:16 AM

My children are Sara and Scarlett. Sara, because it's my favourite song ever, and was really the song that made me fall in love with Fleetwood Mac. Scarlett has always been my other favourite name, but is sort of an unintentional Stevie reference.

I'm loving "Crystal" at the moment, I think it's the harmonies. They're absolutely beautiful, with Stevie doing the high harmony and Christine coming in on the chorus.

I've heard this version too. It honestly does sound like her voice went out.

Could someone please post an MP3? I've never heard it before.

What if you have only boys?

michelej1 08-10-2009 01:10 PM

Stevie got upset and couldn't finish it. There's video of it. As the tour continued, the end of Silver Springs kept getting more and more dramatic, with her pulling her mic farther across the stage and Lindsey chasing her over there. By the time they got to that penultimate show, Stevie was crying at the end and those who reviewed the show say that they could see her saying to him, "I can't do it. I can't do it."

Thanks for that. I knew there was a reason why I loved this live version.
Thanks to everyone for helping me out with the dates, location, etc...

First off, I will cry.

I have a list of boys names, too, and one of them will potentially be Lindsey despite my parents' complaints. But none of the other names are really related to Stevie or Mac.

Yeah, she was clearly upset, but it's just hard to tell if she was emotional over the song, or because she knew her voice was failing. "I can't do it" to me seems like she knew her voice was toast. I think these guys were on emotional autopilot by that point. Everything was (and still is) so rehearsed that it's hard to imagine that she would break down at that point. Plus, although I haven't listened to the track in a while, from what I remember the vocals are pretty bad right out of the gate. It's just more romantic to think she got caught up in the emotions of the song.

I remember you noting that Lindsey was crying too after he sang it and how the boot was really awful, compared to being there and witnessing it.

I agree with that to a level.... although honestly, I really believe that some pretty complex emotions were running around between Stevie and Lindsey during this tour. I don't doubt that there was some "romantic rekindling" going on at the time, like many other Ledgies around here also see as a possibility. Either way, the stories I have heard about this tour make me believe that it was more emotive than that.

Listening to the boot now, her voice is obviously going throughout the song. My one problem with the "she left the stage because she couldn't sing it" thesis, though, is that we've all seen what Stevie does when she's having trouble on a tune: she keeps going. I'm sure there's at least one example from every tour (off the top of my head, Silver Springs in Nashville from this year, Insider in North Carolina with Tom Petty, etc), where Stevie's voice cracks, breaks down, or she flubs on entire verses. Never, though, has she given up because of it. To me, it makes more sense for a vocal problem for her to stay on the stage and catch Lindsey eye and convey to him to finish it out rather than to leave in a fluster and draw more attention to what's happening.

GypsyBlueEyes 08-10-2009 07:27 PM

I don't know you guys, I've listened to it many times and yes, her voice is going, but I don't think it was so bad that she couldn't have finished that last bit. I would give anything to be able to see video of it

Haha. Your memory is better than mine! I do think I remember Lindsey crying! Again, that was a long time ago! Yeah, definitely I think the bootleg was pretty bad compared to actually being there. I think that when you are there you get caught up in everything though. It's loud, and just the excitement of seeing your favorite band live. Then months later when you hear an actual recording that feeling isn't there, and you can just hear the actual vocals. Then again it could be just a bad recording. I have to say, the bootlegs of the more recent tours, and Stevie solo have been pretty good!

I guess there's not a video boot of it. I just looked and my list goes right from Albany to Landover. I thought I had New Jersey, but I didn't.

Well, she could have been upset because her voice was breaking. I mean, in Reno she got upset and couldn't finish the song because people in the audience were fighting. And she got the chance to leave the stage during an encore and collect herself, yet upon her return she was still rattled enough that she asked Lindsey to finish the song. So, it could be anything that got her started, but it still really penetrates on an SnL level.

Possible, but something tells me that Lindsey wouldn't be crying if Stevie's voice gave out OR if someone was fighting. We seem pretty sure that he definitely cried too, which means that this would have to be something that affected both him and Stevie...

I'm thinkin' SnL.

michelej1 08-10-2009 08:32 PM

Here are some reviews, posted at the time:

http://fleetwoodmac.net/penguin/dance97.htm

Gail and Charlie Cahill

Well, here it comes, the surprise...Stevie was really into "Silver Springs". She sang some of the lines a bit differently by drawing them out as she sang. The change sounded great and she was still in line with the tempo. Well, at the end when Lindsey joins Stevie to sing "you'll never get a way from the sound of the woman who loves you" and Stevie begins to rant "never get a way, never get a way" I could tell she was getting very emotional to a point where she didn't know how to continue her ranting. As the music turned softer at the end where she sings the last verse she had moved to over to Christine's stage mic grab it and turn her back slightly to the audience, she had the mic titled to her level. Lindsey sensing something was up walked over to her (he was facing the audience) and even from where we sat you saw her tell Lindsey at least three times that "I can't do it, I can't, no". So, Lindsey finished the song looking her dead in the eye, "you could be my silver springs, my blue/green colors flashing"! Absolutely fantastic! He sang it in a tiny voice almost matching the way Stevie sings it. At the end Stevie put her arm and hand out to him and he took hand and touched in face with it then kissed it. Very emotionally. I believe Stevie had some tears and when Lindsey came back over to his mic he place both hands over his face, then shook off the moment. I had chills! What a thrill!

Janet Strayer

Silver Springs--Stevie lost hr place or something--but Lindsey walked behind her and he turned around and he helped her finish the song--it was so like romantic. Bu then he kissed her hand and she seemed really choked up--awwww.

Marty and Lisa Adelson (site owners at the time)

Actually, we think Stevie blew her voice at the end of the song and Lindsey sort of had to help her finish it. She was standing with her back to the crowd and looked a bit upset when the song was over, and even Lindsey looked emotional. Then as they went to start Tusk, Lindsey mouthed to her, ‘Are you OK? You wanna sing?" and gestured towards the mike, but she didn’t sing on Tusk at all. Lindsey was so playful—at the last concert he was so intensely concentrating on what he was doing—now it seemed effortless as he goofed around with the rest of the band—especially on ‘Not That Funny’ where he pounded out some rhythms with Mick’s vest drums and danced around swami style.

daniellaaarisen 08-10-2009 09:00 PM

Meh, I really believe that Lindsey wouldn't have gotten emotional if it was just an issue with her voice. Maybe its just the shipper in me.... but I donno.

Amlyn 08-10-2009 09:01 PM

Awhile back I was reading some old posts on Buckinhamnicks.net and this topic was discussed over there. There was some speculation that the emotions were running rampant around that time because the beans were probably spilled about Kristen being pregnant.

Now, it's possible that has absolutely nothing to do with what happened that night, but still it seems like Lindsey having children was a defining moment in the SnL drama. And then there's this quote from the MTV Interview this past April which sort of validates that: "Asked when she knew the romance was really over, Nicks said, "The day his first child was born. I knew that was it ... that was the definitive thing."

It may be a stretch, but certainly a possible theory.
