Mirage Tour Stories

Just like the one for Tusk...if you want to see the Mac on the Mirage tour - tell us about it! Anything you can remember, really. How did you like the Mac at this stage? First time seeing the mac? Better or worse than before? Anything special or stand-out?

If you were lucky enough to see the Mac on the last tour that they REALLY rocked out on - please share your story.

About six years ago, I bought something online from a guy who worked as crew on the 1982 tour. Enough time has passed that I figure it's OK to post some of the things he told me, so here goes.

There was seldom a dull moment with that bunch of characters. Imagine a group made up of two divorced couples and a total of 6 people (including Curry Grant) who basically didn't like each other but depended on one another for fame and fortune. John, who seldom drew a sober breath, was my good friend in all that. He and I would have a drink together most every show day at my workbox (aka Club 127), just before sound check. I would not ever provide the vodka and tonic, a tacit agreement that kept me out of the line of fire, but each day he would show up with a drink from the dressing room and I would mix one of the same for myself and join him. I never took to Christine and really never got too close. She seemed to be pretty much the embodiment of all that I abhor about the English. Cold fish.

The band hired a group of karate experts for their security. Five mindless thugs. John could never resist ****ing with the security goons. He would occasionally let them lead him up the stairs to the stage, but instead of walking out to his position for the start of the show, he would take a sharp right at the top of the stairs and walk along the edge of the stage with the guitar slung around his neck and his arms outstretched like a tightrope walker. The thugs would be ****ting themselves trying to get into position to catch him if he fell off the stage.

Stevie, the lovable clumsy cow that she is, would fall off the stage almost every time she would reach down to touch someone in the crowd. Lindsey spent most of his time with his head up his ass. Never did like him - way too self absorbed to suit me. Mick is almost too cool and too weird to describe. Him I liked.

I have to end this note. Remind me sometime to tell you about John walking into the door frame, and about Stevie's limo.

I wonder if that's because she couldn't see very well rather than being clumsy. Anyone who can dance in 5 inch platforms doesn't strike me as clumsy.

CADreaming 08-04-2009 08:27 PM

Hard to imagine Stevie being called a "cow" in 1982...

Agreed. The rest of the descriptions kinda fall into line with what has already been said but 1982 Stevie ain't no cow!

Kind of funny terminology for him to have used, although remember he was using it in circa 2000.

However, there WAS that reference (in a Creem magazine cover story on the Mac in 1982) to Stevie's singing at the 10.21.82 Forum show as being likened to a "bellowing steer with its leg caught in a grate."

The only Mirage story I have is that I BEGGED my parents to let me go see them at the Los Angeles Forum. It would have been my first concert. I was dying to hear "Empire State" live. Of course I know now that they didn't perform that song. But, I was only 13 and they said NO!!!!! They had previously said NO to the US Festival earlier in the year when the Mac played. I had to wait one more year before I got to go to my first concert in 1983.

Was at the EL Lay Forum shows that were taped for the Showtime concert special..the thing I remember most is when the super trouper spotlights were turned on the audience at the climax of SOTM..it was not my first FM show. That would be the Tusk tour which can never be topped IMHO.

I'm sure I've told this story before but here goes: One of my closest friends and I camped out for choice tickets for this show. We were the 2nd people in line for the Worcester Centrum (the Mac was the 2nd band to play ever at the new venue). I don't know if anyone has done it but camping out w a bunch of rabid Mac fans overnight was the best experience. We got 2nd row center seats for our efforts. The night of the show was awesome. We were like Right There. Towards the end when Stevie was doing her stage walk, the guys in front of us, who we had met that night camping out, were cool enough to allow us (there were three guys and three of us) to get up on their backs so we could be up close to the stage. I was closest to where Stevie was. And she reached over to shake my hand. Total eye contact, everything going on but I got scared at the last minute and pulled my hand away. She gave me a look like, What the Hell. The people around me turned to me and asked what was wrong with me. My friends, the guys, everyone was like, "what did you just do?" I felt a moron but I got nervous. Anyhow, we laugh about it to this day.

I would LOVE to do that more than I can even really verbalize. Although the internet has given us countless opportunities, it has also stolen the value of experience. It's quite upsetting for the younger generations who will never really know a world without shortcuts.

I was worried about that! Looked like mirage at first (mick didn't change from 79 to 82, did he?) But I was looking at Stevie's hair after I posted it and thinking it suuure looked Tuskish. Same with Lindsey. Oh well, it is still a cool picture.

I am sorry that you miss out on this. There was something special about camping out for tickets from the planning (what time to we go?) to bonding with others, seeing the ticket staff open the doors/ lift the shade on the ticket window (such excitement!) and turning over $$ for physical tickets. I'd go home at stare at those tickets all day--such a buzz.

Of course it was painful if an obligation kept us from a camp-out (and therefore tix), but at least we didn't have to worry about tix showing on ebay before the sale.

Oh I agree! And it's indeed hard to tell in some pics.

I was at that show...not in the nose-bleed seats, but not as close as you. It was my first Fleetwood Mac concert and it was fanstastic! I recall being at a McDonalds the next day (the last time I ever ate there), and overheard other patrons telling their friends what a great show it was. I really liked the set list. Aside from them including four "new" songs - Hold Me, Love in Store, Gypsy, and Eyes of the World, I wish they would have also performed Straight Back, That's Alright, Only Over You and Can't Go Back.

I attended Stevie's Enchanted tour in Portland, Oregon, and was in the second row. I got to shake her hand, but she was sort of looking over me. There were many hands reaching for her, so I wasn't offended. You had a very odd reaction...were you afraid she was going to eat your hand?

I know she gave me a similar look one time when I saw her at the Greek Theatre in 2007. The 2nd night I was in the front row and they had a wooden divider directly in front of the first row. There was no room for people to pass back and forth, so no one could stand in front of me (which I really appreciated). So, because the front row space was so narrow, I wasn't right at the edge of the stage because I navigated there. I was there only because my seat was actually positioned there.

Consequently, when she came by during the Edge walk, all I had to do was raise my hand, but I really didn't want to touch her, so I just sat there with both hands down, clutched around my purse and when she came by she just kind of looked at me inquiringly as if to say, "Anything wrong?" I grinned at that.

I'm not sure if anyone talked about this yet or not but i did some research on the 1982 tour
and i found something very intresting. Stevie's friend robin died on october 13th 1982 and
fleetwood mac was on the road in Baton Rouge, LA that same night. Throwndown.net has
the audio of that show. I have not downloaded it or heard any of it yet but what i was
wondering was how could stevie ''drugged or straight'' walk onto that stage and pull off
any type of performance knowing that her friend was about to pass. I just think of stevie's
state of mind for the shows before and after robin's death. Has anyone heard those boots
and how does stevie sound?

This sounds kind of morbid, but does anyone know what time of day Robin died? I'm just wondering if Stevie knew at the time of the concert or not. Nonetheless, I'm furiously downloading from throwndown.net right now.

It's A+ quality (so throwndown.net says!).

I've been lucky enough to be in the first 5 rows at every FM or Stevie concert I've been to-- front row last time :) And I must say that after those experiences, I would give an arm and a leg to have tickets of that caliber for every show of theirs that I see. It is a phenomenal experience-- and I'm more than happy to see my wallet severely suffer from it, despite common sense... its impossible to get distracted from the music and the stage, and you really don't have a choice but to be wholeheartedly into it. I can only imagine how much more intense it must have been to be there at the band's peak.

I'll put the Mediafire links up when it's down downloading, but I'm just wondering if Stevie actually heard the bad news before the show on October 13th. There's an October 15th show up on Throwndown.net and I'm wondering if that one's "better" (aka more "cracked up" or whatever you want to call it).

This thread has been an interesting read....the stories...the topic....and any thread that has photos from

Sanne2

is bound to be fun!

:wavey: She always posts photos I have never seen....and they are always delightful! :wavey:

Somebody help me remember....there was a story posted about a European Tour...and the Bellboy came to deliver room service to Stevie's room...and she was "with the guitar player"....but was it ever ascertained who the guitar player was...(?)

I only remember that the Bellboy said Stevie tipped and when he delivered to Mick's room, Mick was entertaining, friendly and funny but didn't tip. I thought Danax6 posted it and it appeared in a Dutch magazine. I can't remember what tour it was or the specifics. (Old age & drugs do that to you...can't remember ****.) Still it was a cool story.

Livia 08-06-2009 12:38 PM

First time I saw Fleetwood Mac w/ the Rumours lineup: October 31, 1982, Austin, TX. Stevie came onstage wearing a witch's hat.

Second time I saw them w/ the Rumours lineup: October 31, 1997, San Antonio, TX. No witch's hat that time, but I was in the 3rd row.

Yes, I remember the thread. It was after Lindsey left the band, but there was still speculation as to whether it could have been him or not because posters wondered if the room service guy would have recognized Rick or Billy as the FM guitar player.

I think Anderson died around the 5th, & the band postponed about a week's worth of shows (the reason given at the box office in Inglewood was "walking pneumonia") but then started playing shows on the 12th or 13th, including Baton Rouge, Denver, Memphis, Irvine, & so on. Irvine on the 18th was the City of Hope benefit specifically planned as a tribute to her (but scheduled before she died).

Several of those shows are on tape, so you can hear them. Stevie isn't any different from earlier in the tour, really. Not to my ears. I mean, if someone had told me her best friend had died the day before the US Festival (way back in early September), I'd have believed it. It would have been plausible, given Stevie's gin-soaked singing. There was a lot of what seems to have been emotional pain in that singing, the entire tour, & the beautiful vocal tic Stevie had developed of dropping a yelp by a third or a perfect fourth was carried forward into the Wild Heart tour the next year.

The final remnants of that interval-descending yelp were heard sporadically on the 1986 tour, but that was the last of it.

Here's Landslide from Irvine, 1982. Stevie thanks the City of Hope for giving them "a little more time", and sings "I'm still afraid of changin' because I've built my life around her." :distress:
