Our other favourite bands
Hi everyone,
So.. this is the first thread I've started on this section of The Ledge. Since this is the chit chat part I thought it would be cool for us to know a bit more about each other if anyone is cool with that. So other than Fleetwood Mac and everyone associated with them, who are our other favourite bands? I totally agree with John Cusack in High Fidelity when he says that you can tell a lot about a person by their music taste and that it's very important for starting conversations etc (in a non-judgmental way of course) so here goes my list of other favourites... Oh, and that film of High Fidelity sucks - the book is amazing though! Counting Crows Emmylou Harris Sheryl Crow Carpenters (Karen was the best female pop singer ever in my opinion) Bonnie Raitt Ryan Adams Matchbox 20 Beverley Knight Neil Young Kylie Minogue (all the way back from hear early late 80s stuff. You guys in the US missed SO much!) Alison Krauss and Union Station Pearl Jam Steve Earle Bruce Springsteen Jackson Browne Sara Evans The Beatles Dixie Chicks Belinda Carlisle Roxette Sugarland Linda Ronstadt (who has the same birthday as me - cool!) Phew - I didn't mean to put so many! As you can see, bit of a country fan here, which can sometimes suck living in the UK! Anyone else like many of the ones on that list? Looking at it I'm struck, as ever, by the fact of how un-British it is! I suppose I should add The Jam to help even it out! Thoughts? I may do a thread about favourite films and actors if this one goes well... |
ANOTHER RYAN ADAMS FAN!!!!! Yes!
I'm a HUGE believer in Cardinology :) After Fleetwood Mac and Stevie, he's my favorite musician. Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Ryan Adams (& the Cardinals), Arcade Fire, Beirut, Metric, Explosions in the Sky, Bon Iver, Led Zeppelin, Jose Gonzalez, Radiohead, Animal Collective, Panda Bear, TV on the Radio, Wilco, Horse Feathers, Wolf Parade, Bob Dylan, Rocky Votolato, Architecture in Helsinki, Damien Rice, Chad Van Gaalen, Isis, Iron & Wine, Eagles, Allman Brothers, Andrew Bird, Of Montreal, Isis, Girl Talk, White Stripes, Streetlight Manifesto, Guided By Voices, James Taylor, Heart, Modest Mouse, Neil Young, The National, The Who, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Smiths, Okkervil River, Pink Floyd, Pixies, Television, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Andy McKee, M.I.A., Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Doors, David Bowie, Devendra Banhart, Santogold, Regina Spektor, Rocco deLuca and the Burden, David Ford, Seabear, Interpol, the Shins, Grateful Dead, Snow Patrol, U2, Sufjan Stevens, Ugly Casanova, Dario Marianelli, Vampire Weekend, Velvet Underground, the Weepies, Whiskeytown, Without Gravity... to list a few. Lets definitely do films and actors! I'm a music and movie fiend-- more so music, but I'm always up to talk about great films. |

Ryan Adams is fantastic - although Cardiology hasn't grown on me yet, it will though! Heartbreaker, Gold, Easy Tiger to name a few are all great. Good call on Jose Gonzalez. Have you heard his cover verion of Kylie Minogue's Hand On Your Heart? It's really cool! Although you have to know the original to get just how different it is... Good call on James Taylor, although I prefer Jackson Browne, and of course the awesome Heart!! I can't believe I forgot to put them on my list - I love Heart!! Oh, and Journey! |
Quote:
I have heard that cover-- phenomenal, like everything he does. I am a really really big fan of Jose's original work but he also has never failed me with a cover. His version of "Teardrop" is beautiful, too. I've seen Heart like 4 times-- SUCH a great show again and again! |

Hmm...well my musical taste is pretty limited I'm known for being very blinkered when it comes to music... Other than FM and FM related stuff (all 16 members) I also like the following:
Oh and a couple of new additions over recent years:
|
Abba
The Eagles The Carpenters ELO Queen |

For me, honestly I dont have a terribly varied interest. I have basically 2 bands that I LOVE besides Fleetwood Mac. they are:
1. The Stereophonics 2. The Sundays I first heard the Stereophonics when I was on holiday in Europe in 2002 getting on the ferry to crosss from Calais to Dover when their song Have A Nice Day came on the sound system on the boat. It was one of those moments where a lighning bolt hits you and you have to find out who this artistwas IMMIDEATELY! I fleew home the next day and bought the album that song was on that night, and the rest is history. TO me, Kelly Jones, the Stereophonics lead singer is one of the most incredible songwriters in modern music! As for The Sundays, I have ben a fan of theirs since their inception in 1990. Their lead singer is a lady named Harriet Wheeler, and to me she has the most angelic voice of any woman I've ever heard. Unfortunately they havent made an album since 1997.:( Incidentally, that large picture in my sig is when I met the Stereophonics back in 2005 when they came to Minneapolis. on the far left is Richard Jones the bass player. Kelly Jones the lead singer and guitar is on the other side of me with the hat on and Javier Weyler the drummer is on the far right. |
Love these...(to name a few):
The Beatles U2 Gin Blossoms Queen Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Goo Goo Dolls Rolling Stones The Police Journey (with Steve Perry) The Band Coldplay New Order The Cure The Pretenders Tears For Fears |

I got into Carpenters about 15 years ago afte5r seeing that awful tv moie The Karen Carpenter story. Im 27 now so was only 12 but just loved the songs. Since then I've been a huge fan. Do you have Karen's solo stuff? The album is ok but patchy and the unreleased songs, well, there's onlureally one good one...

I think in terms of albums I'd have to go for A Song For You and Horizon as possibly the best 2. I do have a very soft spot for Made In America and Lovelines though. Passage and A Kind of Hush, not so much (with the exceptions of I Just Fall In Love Again and I Need To Be In Love, which was apparently Karen's favourite of all their songs). I think my least favourite songs are probably Man Smart, Woman Smarter and Beechwood 4-5789 (as much as I like Made In America). The only thing I don't have is Richard's Time album from the mid 1980s, which is IMPOSSIBLE to get apart from stupidly priced vinyl copies on ebay. The cd version has completely disappeared. It's frustrating. The one thing I need to get to complete my collection. Do you have it, is it any good? I've never thought I was missing out on much because I have Something In Your Eyes. |
Too many to list...
But I will say as of late I have been enjoying Fish era Marillion. |

My other top favorite band is Hanson. It goes with the territory for people to think they're just those kids who sang "MmmBop", but they were so much more than that song even then and have only continued to grow as musicians and songwriters over the past twelve years. I essentially grew up with them having been a fan since the early days, I adore their music and style and their live shows are among the most fun I've ever had at concerts (and they never fail to bust out a kickass classic rock cover or two). Great guys and great tunes.
I'm also really into Kings of Leon. I'm one of the fairly new fans in that I wasn't aware of them until Only by the Night came out, but I love their entire catalogue. Their sound is amazing and they are another band that gives me faith that people of my own generation can still put out some quality music. Also high on the list are REM, the Bee Gees, the Beach Boys (especially Dennis), Matt Nathanson and Sister Hazel. |
The Beatles, The Who, Heart, Three Dog Night, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Ambrosia, Andy Williams, Simon & Garfunkel, Sly & The Family Stone, Jackson 5, The Carpentars, The Hollies, Alice Cooper, Frank Sinatra, Helen Reddy Roberta Flack, The Bee Gees, Sheryl Crow, The O'Jays, The Spinners, 5th Dimension, Seals & Crofts, Gordon Lightfoot, The Violent Femmes, Romeo Void and a billion others I can't think of right now.
Hip Hop: #1 favorite= Ludacris Mos Def, Styles P, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Bubba Sparxx, Eminem, The Pack, The Game and a million more rappers I know none of you give a crunk about. |

To that I'll add: Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Concrete Blonde (my love for Johnette Napolitano is really quite ridiculous), Bat for Lashes, Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Velvet Underground and Lou Reed. |
Bonnie Raitt
The Pretenders Heart Sam Phillips Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Rosanne Cash Alison Krauss and Union Station ELO Emmylou Harris Dolly Parton Sarah McLachlan Dixie Chicks Bob Seger Tonic Don Williams Alice Cooper Angie Aparo The Cox Family CSNY John Hiatt Joey + Rory Sheryl Crow Grayson Capps and the Stumpknockers |

GREEN DAY - I love them about half as much as I love Stevie, which clocks in at right about 'unhealthy obsession.' Sadly, even though I begged everyone I know who can drive, I found no one available to take me to their concert. I cried.
Paramore - I absolutely love both of their studio CDs, 'All We Know is Falling' and 'Riot!' and I'm superrr excited about 'Brand New Eyes'. I also didn't go to this concert. Even though my best friend and I had tickets. Our parents wouldn't let us go alone. :/ So we sold them. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - I got to see them last summer, and we had 5th row seats! It was an awesome concert! Cheap Trick - They were 'My Obsession' (hehe, that's one of their songs!) before I discovered who sang Silver Springs. :) I saw them two years ago, and stood on my chair the entire time to see Robin Zander over the 6 foot man in front of me. :) Katy Perry - Some of her songs are strange, but I think she's pretty cool, and whacked out. :] I read her interview in Seventeen and she sounds more down to earth than the other current poppies. I have a Katy Perry t-shirt. :D Nirvana - I'm not like a huge fan or anything, but I have their two studio CDs. And I like most of the songs, if I ignore the lyrics. Secondhand Serenade - He's just cool, and I like several of their songs. The Fray - I've listen to 'You Found Me' more than most people would care to. Rihanna - She's also just cool, and her name reminds me of Rhiannon, which is also my name :) |
Guided by Voices/Robert Pollard (my actual favorite); The Byrds (and all shootoffs); Wilco; Cheap Trick; Big Star; the Breeders; Material Issue; and the Replacements have been getting up there. And, I've developed a major soft spot for old punk bands (Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, the Stooges, the Rings) as well as bands like Velvet Underground, Wire, and Pere Ubu. I find myself appreciating the ACTUAL eccentric artists (screw you Lindsey).
In addition to that, of course, I love all of the other (main) projects of the other guys in my triubte band. Especially The Tasties and our vocalist Jesse Remnant. Their songs just give me gooseflesh. The other guys' stuff is killer, too (if not available on CD). I'm one of the luckiest people in the world to work with such talent on such a casual basis. I mean, there's nothing quite as cool to having a big practice, and then singing along with somebody in the band's CD on the way home! I tend to hate "mainstream" music. There's so much more worthwhile out there, that it becomes very limiting. That includes classic rock, BTW. Sure, there are songs that still get me there (Funk #49, Start Me Up), but so much of it is REALLY tired by this point. |

Good thread idea!!!
Some of my faves outside the realm of Mac: Colbie Caillat (she counts lol) Vampire Weekend (almost forgot them lol)-saw live Maroon 5- seen live twice Jason Mraz I'm just getting into some ABBA, who are IMO a weak Mac Franz Ferdinand the Beatles, of course Chester French (similar to VW) the Killers L'Homme Run (very few songs, but very good) Lily Allen Taylor Swift Honestly, I find myself liking a few songs by one artist moreso than liking a majority of one artists songs. Which is another reason why I hold FM so dear- I only dislike maybe 12 songs during Rumours era, which is where my fandom lies. I mean I saw AC/DC Tuesday, don't get me wrong, they're really talented, but if not for the obv hits I wasn't as into it as the people I went with (but to be fair, I mostly went for a guy...) anyway I also like Alanis Morrisette, Dire Straits, and the Cars- but not everything in their catalogue. Two more honorable mentions are Tom Petty, and Supertramp |
